The best setup order is straightforward: finish the first-run basics, install every available system update, add a strong screen lock, audit app permissions and lock-screen notifications, then tune sleep, brightness, dark mode and battery information. Because Lenovo tablet models run different Android versions, the labels and menu paths below are approximate. If a path does not match, use the closest equivalent shown in Settings, and confirm your model and Android version under About tablet. Lenovo explicitly notes that available settings vary by device and software version.
This sequence gives you the largest security and reliability benefits first, while leaving comfort settings—such as brightness and sleep timeout—for after the tablet is current and protected.
Start with the first-run essentials
Before changing individual preferences, complete the basic setup that Lenovo lists for a new Android tablet: connect to Wi-Fi, verify the date and time, configure Google services, and create a screen lock. These choices affect updates, account synchronization, app installation and security. Keep the charger connected if the battery is low, and use a reliable Wi-Fi connection before downloading a large system update. Cellular options, if your model has them, do not change the need to verify that the tablet is online before checking for updates.

Identify the exact model and Android version
Open Settings > About tablet, or use the equivalent About device entry if your software uses different wording. Record the model number and Android version. This matters when you look for a user guide, buy a case or screen protector, or decide whether a feature such as a stylus or a biometric unlock is supported. Lenovo says both menu paths and available features can differ by model and Android version.
Use this priority order

Install every available system update
Updating is the most important change to make before settling into everyday use. Lenovo documents two common routes: Settings > System > System Update, or Settings > About tablet > System update. Your tablet may use slightly different capitalization or place the control elsewhere. Lenovo’s update instructions are at How to upgrade your Android phone or tablet, with additional model caveats in its tablet FAQ.
- Connect the tablet to Wi-Fi and, if practical, leave it connected to its charger.
- Open Settings and look for System, System update or About tablet.
- Tap Check for update (or the closest equivalent).
- Read the update details, then choose Download, Install or Restart and install when offered.
- Allow the tablet to restart as many times as the installer requires. Do not power it off or unplug it while installation is in progress; Lenovo specifically warns against interrupting the process.
- Return to the update screen after the restart and check again. A second check can reveal a later package that was not offered until the first update completed.
If no update appears
“Your device is up to date” means no package is currently offered to that tablet for its software channel; it does not mean every Lenovo model receives the same Android release. Confirm the model number and Android version, make sure the date and time are correct, and retry on a stable Wi-Fi network. If the update screen is missing, search Settings for update and use the result that points to system software. Do not install firmware intended for a different model.

Do not leave a new tablet unlocked. In most versions, the control is under Settings > Security, Security & privacy or Lock screen. Choose a PIN or password; Lenovo’s security guidance gives a six-digit password as an example, not as a universal requirement. PIN versus password

Lenovo says face recognition is available on most recent tablets but recommends checking the device user guide rather than assuming it exists. Whatever method you choose, remember the PIN or password: it will be required after some restarts and security events even when a biometric option is enabled.
Audit app permissions before installing more apps
Permissions determine what an app can access. Grant only what the app needs for the function you intend to use, and deny requests that do not have a clear purpose. Lenovo’s security guidance covers permission review alongside updates and screen locks: Lenovo’s device-security guide.
Review permissions from Settings
- Open Settings and search for App permissions, or open Apps and select an individual app.
- Choose Permissions to see categories the app has requested and the current state of each one.
- Keep access that directly supports the app’s stated job; choose Don’t allow for unrelated categories.
- For sensitive categories, select an option such as Ask every time or Allow only while using the app when your Android version provides it.
- Recheck permissions after an app update or when an app begins behaving differently.
There is no universally correct list of permissions to enable. A navigation app may need location while in use; a document scanner may need camera access when scanning. The useful rule is to connect each permission to a feature you actually use, not to approve every prompt during setup.
Control lock-screen notification content
Notifications can reveal message text, appointment details or account information while the tablet is locked. Open Settings > Notifications and look for Notifications on lock screen, On the lock screen or a similarly named control. Depending on the Android version, you can show all content, hide sensitive content, or show no notification details. If several people use the tablet, hiding sensitive content is a sensible compromise: the lock screen still indicates that something arrived, but the message body is not exposed to anyone looking at the display.
Tune the display for comfort and battery life
Display settings are preference-dependent, so “best” means a setting that remains comfortable without leaving the screen lit unnecessarily. Lenovo documents the sleep-timeout route as Settings > Display > Sleep. Brightness and dark mode may be in the same Display menu or available through Quick Settings. Choose a sleep timeout
- Open Settings > Display > Sleep, or search Settings for screen timeout or screen sleep.
- Choose a short interval if the tablet is often set down in public or if avoiding wasted battery is your priority.
- Choose a longer interval when reading recipes, sheet music or reference material and you do not want to touch the screen repeatedly.
- Test the choice during a normal task. If the display goes dark while you are still reading, increase the interval; if it stays lit after you walk away, reduce it.
A longer timeout is not automatically better. It keeps the display active when you forget to lock the tablet, while an extremely short timeout can interrupt reading. Pick the shortest interval that does not interfere with your usual tasks.

Adjust the brightness slider in Settings > Display or in Quick Settings. Start at a level that lets you read comfortably in the room where you use the tablet, then lower it in a dim environment and raise it outdoors. Brightness is affected by lighting, viewing angle and the panel on your particular model, so a percentage that works for one Lenovo tablet is not a reliable recommendation for another.

Decide whether to use dark mode
Look in Settings > Display or Quick Settings for Dark theme, Dark mode or Night mode. Dark mode can feel more comfortable in low light, while light mode may be easier to read for some documents and websites. Apps can apply their own theme, so changing the tablet-wide setting may not affect every app. Treat it as a comfort and preference choice rather than a guaranteed battery-saving setting.

Show the battery percentage
If the icon alone does not tell you when to charge, enable Battery percentage under Settings > Battery or the status-bar options. Lenovo lists this as an optional convenience; the exact switch location varies by Android version. A percentage is useful when deciding whether to take the tablet on a trip or start a long video call, but it does not change charging behavior.
Check for Battery Protection Mode only on supported models
Do not assume every Lenovo tablet has a charging cap. Lenovo’s documented Battery Protection Mode is specifically Smart Tab guidance: when enabled for that context, it stops charging at 60% while the tablet remains continuously connected to power. Open your tablet’s battery settings and look for a clearly named protection, conservation or charging-limit option. If it is absent, that is expected on models without the feature; do not install an unofficial utility or follow Smart Tab instructions on a different model. Use the normal charger and the charging guidance supplied for your tablet.

Confirm model-specific extras before buying accessories or changing advanced options
Once the core setup is complete, revisit Settings > About tablet and write down the exact model identifier and Android version. Two tablets sold under a similar family name can have different dimensions, ports, cameras, speakers, stylus support and menu layouts. Lenovo’s FAQ repeatedly cautions that paths and features depend on the model and software version: Lenovo Android Tablets: Frequently Asked Questions.
- Use the model identifier—not only the marketing family name—when opening Lenovo’s user guide.
- Check compatibility before buying a case or screen protector; physical fit cannot be inferred from the Android version.
- Confirm stylus support and any keyboard, dock or Smart Tab feature in the model documentation.
- After a major Android update, search Settings again because a control may move to a different category.
Troubleshoot the common first-day problems
The update menu is not where the instructions say
Search the Settings app for system update, software update or simply update. Check both System and About tablet. If the tablet still cannot find the control, verify the model number and consult its Lenovo support page rather than selecting firmware for a similar-looking device.
The update downloaded but will not install
Reconnect to stable Wi-Fi, charge the tablet and retry. Keep the tablet powered on and connected during installation. If the package repeatedly fails, note the exact error, Android version and model number before contacting Lenovo support; those details distinguish a storage, network or model-channel problem.
An app stopped working after a permission was denied
Open the app’s entry under Settings > Apps, choose Permissions, and allow only the category tied to the feature you are trying to use. If the app still works without that permission, leave it denied. An app should not receive broad access merely because it requests it during first launch.
The screen goes dark too quickly
Increase the value under Settings > Display > Sleep. If the display is dim rather than asleep, raise brightness or check whether a power-related setting is reducing it. Lenovo’s display troubleshooting page uses the same sleep-timeout path: Dim display issue – Android tablet.
Battery Protection Mode is missing
That feature is not universal. Lenovo’s 60% charging limit documentation is for Smart Tab guidance, so a different Lenovo tablet may not show it. Confirm the model before treating the absence as a fault.
