Short answer: On Xbox Series X|S, begin with the current in-game display options, then calibrate HDR on the console and television; the store listing advertises 4K Ultra HD, HDR10, and 60 fps+, but it does not document selectable quality or performance modes or independently measured frame rates. On PC, use the Steam minimum specification as a 30-FPS baseline at 1080p on Low with upscaling, then tune upscaling, frame-rate limiting, ray tracing, and shadows in that order while watching frame pacing in combat. The ray-tracing and shadow recommendations below come from an unofficial alpha-demo guide, not a confirmed retail-build benchmark.

What “best settings” can realistically mean right now

Valor Mortis is built around timing-sensitive combat, including parries and dashes. For that kind of game, a stable frame time is usually more useful than a short-lived peak-frame-rate number. The right target is therefore the highest output your system can hold during effects-heavy fights, not the largest number shown in an empty room.

Platform advice must be separated. The Xbox store page lists Xbox Series X|S and PC versions, Xbox Play Anywhere, 4K Ultra HD, HDR10, and 60 fps+. Those are advertised capabilities of the product listing. They are not a promise that every scene renders at 4K or maintains 60 frames per second, and the listing does not identify console-specific performance and quality presets.

For PC, Steam publishes a minimum target of 30 FPS at 1080p on Low with upscaling and requires an SSD. A third-party performance page covering the alpha demo recommends starting with quality upscaling and a frame-rate cap, while another unofficial guide identifies ray tracing and shadows as high-impact reductions. Both sources warn, directly or indirectly, that demo settings can change before release. Treat those recommendations as a starting method rather than launch-build test results.

Xbox Series X|S: a safe starting configuration

1. Confirm the display path before changing game options

Use a certified HDMI cable and connect the console directly to the television or monitor when possible. If an audio/video receiver or switch is in the chain, verify that it passes 4K, HDR10, and the refresh rate you intend to use. On Xbox, open Settings > General > TV & display options and review the detected resolution, refresh rate, and 4K TV details. These console labels can change with system updates, so use the wording shown on your current dashboard.

  • Set the console resolution to the panel’s native value when it is correctly detected.
  • Choose a refresh rate your display actually supports; selecting a higher value than the panel can accept will not improve Valor Mortis.
  • Run the Xbox HDR calibration tool if HDR appears washed out, too dark, or clipped.

The calibration step matters because HDR10 support in the store listing only means the game and platform can output HDR10. It does not guarantee that every television’s default tone mapping will look correct.

2. Inspect the current in-game video menu

Launch the game and open its video, display, or graphics menu. The exact labels and available switches should be checked in the installed build. Look specifically for a performance/quality selector, resolution scale, HDR toggle, brightness or paper-white control, motion blur, field of view, and frame-rate limit. Do not assume that a setting exists simply because another version or an early guide mentions it.

If a performance or quality choice is present, compare it in a demanding area rather than at the title screen. A performance-oriented option is normally preferable for parry timing, but the available documentation does not establish the names, resolution targets, or measured frame rates of Xbox modes. If no selector is present, leave the game at its default and evaluate consistency during combat instead of forcing a console-level setting.

3. Tune HDR for readable dark scenes

Use the television’s game picture mode, disable extra motion interpolation, and then run the console HDR calibration. In the game, adjust brightness or paper white only far enough that dark geometry remains distinguishable without turning shadows gray. Make one change at a time and revisit the same scene; changing the television’s tone mapping and the game’s brightness simultaneously makes it difficult to identify the cause of a problem.

4. Check frame pacing, not only the advertised number

The store advertises 60 fps+, but the available sources do not provide an independent Series X|S measurement or confirm that all scenes maintain a particular rate. Watch for uneven camera movement, repeated hitching when effects appear, or delayed-feeling parries. If the game exposes a frame-rate option, select the highest limit that remains consistent in the heaviest encounter you can find. If it does not, use the display’s information panel only as a rough diagnostic; it cannot prove the game’s internal render rate.

Xbox troubleshooting

  • HDR is missing: Recheck Settings > General > TV & display options > 4K TV details, the HDMI input’s enhanced mode, and the cable path. Power-cycle the display after changing its HDR setting.
  • The picture looks gray or over-bright: Re-run HDR calibration, then lower the game’s brightness or paper-white control. Do not stack multiple television picture enhancements.
  • Motion feels inconsistent: Test with television motion smoothing disabled, close suspended games, and compare the same encounter after a full game restart. There is no documented Xbox graphics-mode switch to recommend universally.
  • You cannot find a performance toggle: That is consistent with the current evidence. The store listing does not publish a complete Xbox settings menu; use only controls visible in your installed version.

PC requirements and what the minimum target means

Steam lists the following minimum configuration for Valor Mortis:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Component Published minimum What it implies
Operating system Windows 10 Keep Windows and graphics drivers current enough for DirectX 12 support.
Processor AMD Ryzen 5 3600 or Intel Core i5-10600K This is the listed floor, not a guarantee of a locked 60 FPS.
Memory 16 GB RAM Close unnecessary background applications when troubleshooting stutter.
Graphics AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT or NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti The listed target is 1080p, Low, with upscaling at 30 FPS.
API DirectX 12 Install the current supported driver and avoid forcing an older compatibility mode.
Storage 60 GB available and an SSD required Do not install to a mechanical hard drive if you want to meet the stated requirement.
Published performance target 30 FPS at 1080p on Low with upscaling This is a minimum target, not a 60-FPS promise.

Steam also lists full controller support. An Xbox-compatible controller is optional input hardware: it can suit players who prefer analog movement and trigger control, but it does not add graphics performance, increase frame rate, or replace the SSD requirement.

PC setup: a repeatable tuning procedure

Step 1: establish a measurable baseline

  1. Update Windows and install a current driver for your GPU.
  2. Restart the computer, close browsers and overlays you do not need, and launch the game from the SSD.
  3. Open Options > Video or the equivalent graphics menu. Menu names may differ by build.
  4. Choose your monitor’s native resolution and begin with the Low preset if your hardware is near the Steam minimum.
  5. Play the same demanding section for several minutes. Record whether the problem is a low average rate, sudden hitching, or inconsistent frame pacing.

A repeatable scene is more informative than changing five settings and judging a different area. If the game has no built-in counter, use your GPU driver’s performance overlay sparingly; overlays can themselves introduce conflicts, so disable them after testing.

Step 2: select an upscaling mode

The alpha-demo performance guide treats upscaling as a major performance lever and recommends starting with a quality-oriented mode. Select the highest-quality option that gives you headroom, then compare movement and fine geometry at native resolution versus upscaled output. Lower-quality modes can recover performance but may soften distant detail, produce shimmering, or make combat silhouettes harder to read.

These are demo-era priorities, not quantified retail-build trade-offs. If your GPU cannot sustain the minimum 30-FPS target, use a more aggressive upscaling mode before raising other visual settings. If you have substantial headroom, move back toward a quality mode and verify that frame pacing remains even.

Step 3: cap the frame rate for consistency

The same unofficial guide recommends a frame-rate cap for pacing. Set the cap to a value your system can hold through effects-heavy fights rather than the highest number it reaches in a quiet corridor. A stable cap can reduce oscillation between frames and make parry timing feel more predictable. Start with the game’s own limiter if available; use a driver-level limiter only when the in-game control is absent or unreliable.

  • BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.

Do not infer a guaranteed target from the Xbox store’s “60 fps+” label or from a high-end PC report. Your cap should follow your measured behavior, display refresh rate, and desired latency.

Step 4: reduce ray tracing when performance is poor

An unofficial settings guide identifies ray tracing as one of the first reductions to try. Turn it off or lower its quality, restart the benchmark scene, and check both frame pacing and image readability. Ray-traced reflections or shadows may improve specific surfaces while costing performance in scenes with water, fire, or many dynamic effects.

This recommendation comes from guidance for an alpha/demo build. The final menu may rename the option, change its cost, or remove it. Treat the setting as a priority to test, not a proven percentage improvement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 5: lower shadows next

The demo performance guide also calls shadows a high-impact setting. If ray tracing changes do not provide enough headroom, lower shadow quality or distance one step at a time. Check characters, ledges, and attack telegraphs after each change; very low shadows can make scene depth and enemy positioning harder to read even when the frame counter improves.

Step 6: adjust image-quality options last

Once upscaling, the cap, ray tracing, and shadows are stable, tune texture quality, effects, ambient occlusion, reflections, and post-processing individually if those controls exist. Texture quality is often limited by video memory rather than raw shader throughput, so lowering it may not cure a GPU-bound scene. Conversely, reducing effects or reflections can help during fire, water, and particle-heavy encounters. The available sources do not provide controlled measurements for each option, so use your own repeatable scene and retain the setting only if it solves the specific problem.

PC setting priorities at a glance

Setting First action Likely visual trade-off Evidence status
Upscaling Start with a quality mode; move lower only when necessary. Lower modes can soften detail or introduce shimmer. Recommended by an unofficial alpha-demo performance guide; retail impact not established.
Frame-rate cap Cap at a value your system sustains in demanding fights. A lower ceiling can feel smoother than an unstable peak. Demo-era pacing guidance, not a measured launch result.
Ray tracing Disable or reduce it early when frame pacing is poor. Less detailed reflections, lighting, or shadows where the effect is used. Priority identified by an unofficial guide; cost may change in the final build.
Shadows Lower one step after testing ray tracing. Reduced shadow distance or contact detail. High-impact setting reported by an unofficial guide for the demo.
Textures and effects Change only after the priorities above are stable. Lower surface detail or less elaborate particles. No controlled side-by-side measurements available.

Useful starting profiles by hardware position

Hardware near the Steam minimum

Use 1080p, Low, quality upscaling, and a 30-FPS cap as the first checkpoint because that is the published minimum target. Keep ray tracing disabled or at its lowest available level and reduce shadows if the cap is missed in combat. An SSD is mandatory under the stated requirements; moving the game to a hard drive is not a substitute for lowering settings.

Hardware comfortably above minimum

Keep the native output resolution of your monitor, begin with quality upscaling, and choose a cap that your GPU and CPU can sustain. Raise shadows or effects one option at a time. Test ray tracing separately rather than enabling it along with every other change, because you need to know whether its visual benefit is worth the pacing cost on your machine.

High-end hardware

A third-party guide reports approximately 80 FPS at 1440p on maximum settings with ray tracing on a top-end machine, with dips below 60 in scenes containing water, fire, and heavy effects. That figure is a report from an unspecified test setup, not a controlled benchmark or a verified retail result. Use it only as evidence that demanding scenes can behave differently from simple ones. Even with a fast GPU, set a cap based on the lowest combat performance you observe.

Diagnosing common PC problems

Low average frame rate

Lower ray tracing first, then shadows, and move to a more aggressive upscaling mode if necessary. Confirm that the game is using the intended GPU and that the power profile is not limiting it. If you are below the Steam minimum hardware, the published 30-FPS target may not be attainable without further compromises.

Stutter despite a high frame counter

Watch frame-time consistency rather than average FPS. Apply a conservative cap, close overlays and background capture tools, and keep the game on the required SSD. Shader compilation, driver changes, or asset streaming can cause pauses that a higher average number will hide. Re-test after a complete restart instead of judging only the first seconds after loading.

Blurry or shimmering image

Move up to a quality upscaling mode, verify that the output resolution matches the monitor, and inspect sharpening or temporal options if the game exposes them. Raising every graphics setting is not necessary; restore image quality in the upscaler first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Combat feels delayed

Use the most stable cap your system can maintain, disable television-style motion smoothing when playing on a display, and check whether a wireless peripheral or overlay is introducing input delay. A controller can change comfort and control preference, but it does not increase frame rate.

Crashes or missing graphics options

Verify the game files through Steam, update the graphics driver, and remove forced launch parameters or third-party injectors. The menu may differ between the alpha/demo and the release build, so do not copy an old configuration file blindly. If an option is absent, tune the controls that are actually exposed by your installed version.

Controller choice on PC

Steam lists full controller support, and an Xbox-compatible controller is a reasonable optional choice for players who prefer analog movement, triggers, or familiar button placement. It is an input decision, not a performance upgrade. Keyboard-and-mouse users should keep whichever layout gives them the most reliable movement and camera control; no source establishes a frame-rate advantage for either input method.

What is still unconfirmed

The available documentation does not establish the exact retail-build graphics menu, Xbox performance modes, console-specific resolutions, or independently measured launch performance. Steam showed a listed October 13, 2026 release date alongside a not-yet-available notice when checked on that date. Consequently, demo-derived recommendations should be revisited after launch documentation or reliable current testing confirms how the final build behaves.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Until that information is available, the defensible approach is conservative: on Xbox, verify the options and HDR behavior in your installed game and display; on PC, begin from the published 30-FPS minimum target, use upscaling and a cap for consistency, then test ray tracing and shadows as the first performance reductions.

Final recommendation

For Xbox Series X|S, there is no evidence-based universal “quality” or “performance” switch to name. Configure the display correctly, calibrate HDR, inspect the current in-game menu, and judge smoothness in demanding combat rather than relying on store capability labels. For PC, use 1080p Low with upscaling and an SSD as the minimum reference point, then raise quality only while your chosen frame-rate cap remains stable. Keep every demo-era recommendation provisional until the retail build and independent testing settle the actual costs of each setting.
