For a smoother game stream, start with a stable 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection near the router, check latency using the streaming service’s own network test, and choose a resolution and frame rate your phone and connection can sustain. For GeForce NOW, NVIDIA lists 15 Mbps for 720p and 25 Mbps for 1080p; its Android setup guidance recommends latency under 40 ms and sets an 80 ms limit. Those figures are service targets, not guarantees of smooth gameplay.

Start with the settings that affect every kind of game stream

Streaming games to a phone can mean playing a game rendered in a cloud data center or streaming from a computer on your home network. The same basic Wi-Fi priorities apply to both, but their network paths differ: a cloud stream travels to the provider’s servers and back, while a home stream depends on the connection between your phone and the computer running the game. A general internet speed test cannot tell you exactly how either path will perform.

Use this order when setting up a session: choose the best available Wi-Fi band and location, check the connection to the actual streaming service if it provides a diagnostic, then select stream quality and controls. Changing resolution before checking for a weak or unstable signal can hide the symptom without fixing its cause.

There is no one preset that works best on every phone, router, service and home. A good starting point is the mode your device and service support, with a strong signal at your play location. Then test a real session. If it is stable, you can try a higher-quality mode; if it stutters, change one thing at a time so you can see whether the connection, stream quality or another constraint is responsible.

Prefer 5 GHz when its signal is strong where you play

NVIDIA recommends a router with 5 GHz Wi-Fi for GeForce NOW, and Steam Support recommends 5 GHz instead of a congested 2.4 GHz band for Steam Link. The practical condition is signal quality: a 5 GHz connection that is weak at your seat may be less useful than a stronger connection available there. Move closer to the router and, if the router lets you choose one, try a less congested channel.

Walls, floors, metal objects and nearby electronics can weaken wireless signal. Because 5 GHz performance is sensitive to distance and obstructions, check coverage at the actual place you hold the phone rather than relying on the router’s advertised range. A signal that works well beside the router may behave differently from one reaching a room across the home.

For troubleshooting, compare the connection where you play with a test closer to the router. If the stream improves near the router, coverage or interference at the usual location may be part of the problem. If it remains poor, check the service diagnostic and other network activity before deciding that a new router is needed. NVIDIA recommends 5 GHz, but its guidance also emphasizes moving closer and choosing a less congested channel; placement and existing equipment are sensible first checks.

Measure the route to the service, not just internet speed

Latency is the time it takes data to travel between your device and the game service. It affects how quickly an action on the phone is reflected in the game. For GeForce NOW, NVIDIA says to use the in-app network test: a generic speed-test ping does not measure the route to NVIDIA’s data centers. NVIDIA’s Android setup guidance recommends latency below 40 ms and gives a limit of 80 ms. Treat the recommendation and limit as GeForce NOW guidance, not universal thresholds for every service.

Bandwidth and latency answer different questions. Bandwidth is how much data the connection can carry; latency is how long a round trip takes. A high speed-test result does not establish that the route to a game server is low-latency or stable. Nor does a service’s listed bandwidth requirement ensure a consistent stream if Wi-Fi interference or competing traffic causes interruptions.

Cloud gaming and in-home streaming also make a generic ping less informative in different ways. With a cloud service, the important route is between the phone and that provider’s data center. With Steam Link, the phone communicates with the computer running the game over the home network. Use a service-provided diagnostic when one is available, and judge the result alongside what happens during play. Do not interpret a fast internet download result as proof that the gaming route or local wireless link is suitable.

Choose resolution and frame rate for your phone and connection

Higher resolution can make the image sharper, and a higher frame rate can make motion look smoother. Both require support from the streaming service and phone, and both depend on a connection that can sustain the selected stream. For GeForce NOW, NVIDIA’s current requirements page, accessed in 2026, lists the following mobile figures. These are service requirements or supported targets, not independent performance test results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Device and mode NVIDIA-listed bandwidth Additional requirements or limits
Android, HD up to 60 FPS 15 Mbps Android 7.0 or later, 1 GB available memory and OpenGL ES 2.0 support.
Android, FHD at 60 FPS 25 Mbps Device and connection must sustain the selected stream.
Android, QHD at 120 FPS 35 Mbps 1440p and 120 FPS require GeForce NOW Ultimate membership; 120 FPS also requires a phone or tablet with a 120 Hz display.
iPhone or iPad, HD up to 60 FPS 15 Mbps iOS or iPadOS 15.4 or later.
iPhone or iPad, FHD at 60 FPS 25 Mbps iOS or iPadOS 15.4 or later.

NVIDIA’s Android setup guidance lists 35 Mbps for 1440p and 120 FPS. The higher frame-rate mode is not a setting that can make a 60 Hz screen display 120 distinct frames per second: the phone or tablet needs a 120 Hz display, and GeForce NOW Ultimate is required for 1440p and 120 FPS on Android. A compatible screen alone does not ensure the network can deliver a stable stream.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

For iPhone and iPad, the listed GeForce NOW modes in the current requirements are HD up to 60 FPS at 15 Mbps and FHD at 60 FPS at 25 Mbps. Do not assume that Android’s QHD/120 FPS requirements or membership notes apply identically to Apple devices. Service requirements can change, so check NVIDIA’s current requirements for your device before relying on a particular mode.

These bandwidth figures help you compare modes, but they should not be treated as an exact speed-test score that guarantees success. A connection that reaches a listed figure in a brief test can still encounter interference, weak coverage or competing household use during a session. Conversely, if a service reports a problem with the route or the stream stutters, simply paying for a faster internet plan may not address the cause. First check the Wi-Fi path and the stream setting.

A practical quality-selection rule

  • Start at the resolution and frame rate your phone display supports.
  • Use the streaming service’s diagnostic and listed bandwidth requirements as a starting point, not a promise that the stream will remain smooth.
  • If the stream stutters or the connection cannot sustain its current quality, lower resolution or the bandwidth limit before trying a higher mode again.
  • Raise quality only when the stream remains stable at the lower setting and the phone, service tier and display support the next mode.

When comparing two possible modes, think of resolution, frame rate, network demand and device support together. A higher-resolution mode can be a poor trade if it makes the stream unstable; a high frame-rate mode is irrelevant if the display or service tier does not support it. Choose the highest mode that is both supported and consistently playable in the place you use the phone.

Set up GeForce NOW on Android

NVIDIA’s current Android requirements include Android 7.0 or later, 1 GB of available memory and OpenGL ES 2.0 support. Its listed bandwidth targets are 15 Mbps for HD up to 60 FPS, 25 Mbps for FHD at 60 FPS, and 35 Mbps for QHD at 120 FPS. The 120 FPS option depends on a 120 Hz phone or tablet display; QHD at 120 FPS also requires Ultimate membership.

  1. Check that the phone meets the service requirements. Confirm the Android version, available memory and OpenGL ES 2.0 support against NVIDIA’s current requirements page.
  2. Connect to a strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi signal if available. Test from the location where you intend to play, not only beside the router.
  3. Run GeForce NOW’s in-app network test. Use its result for the route to NVIDIA’s data center. NVIDIA recommends under 40 ms in its Android setup guidance and requires latency under 80 ms.
  4. Choose a supported stream mode. Begin with a mode your display and membership support, and make sure the connection can sustain its listed bandwidth target.
  5. Test an actual session. If gameplay stutters, follow the troubleshooting sequence below before increasing quality.

The network test is particularly useful before adjusting stream quality because it checks the service route rather than only the phone’s general internet performance. If the measurement is above NVIDIA’s recommended latency, do not expect a higher resolution to solve the delay. If the test is within the stated guidance but the game still stutters, investigate wireless stability and competing traffic as well as the selected stream mode.

Set up GeForce NOW on iPhone or iPad

NVIDIA lists iOS or iPadOS 15.4 or later, 15 Mbps for HD up to 60 FPS, and 25 Mbps for FHD at 60 FPS. Its iOS guidance calls for latency under 80 ms and recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi. The figures are service requirements, not a guarantee that every Wi-Fi environment will deliver a consistent stream.

NVIDIA says a gamepad is needed for gameplay on iPhone and iPad. It lists Xbox controllers, Sony DualSense and DualShock 4 controllers, and MFi Bluetooth controllers. Keyboard and mouse are not recommended for gameplay through Safari. If you want to play while holding the phone, NVIDIA recommends using a clip to attach a compatible gamepad to it. Check compatibility for your controller and device before relying on it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The controller requirement is separate from the network requirements: pairing a gamepad does not improve Wi-Fi performance, and meeting a bandwidth target does not ensure that your chosen input method will work for gameplay. Confirm both parts of the setup before a long session. If you are choosing an accessory, a compatible Bluetooth gamepad is an optional purchase for many setups but is required for GeForce NOW gameplay on iPhone or iPad under NVIDIA’s guidance. A phone clip is an optional way to mount the phone with a gamepad, not a required streaming component.

Configure Steam Link without guessing at a universal preset

Steam Support’s guidance recommends 5 GHz instead of a congested 2.4 GHz band and notes that distance and physical obstructions—including walls, floors and metal—as well as electronics can weaken wireless signal. Steam Link’s advanced streaming settings expose controls to limit resolution and bandwidth. The appropriate limit depends on the connection between the phone and the computer running the game; the available guidance does not establish one best numeric preset for every home.

  1. Connect the phone to the stronger available Wi-Fi signal. Prefer 5 GHz when it is not weakened by distance or obstacles at your play location.
  2. Open Steam Link’s advanced streaming settings. Use its resolution and bandwidth limits if the stream is unstable or the wireless connection cannot sustain the current quality.
  3. Change one limit at a time and test play. This makes it easier to tell whether a lower resolution or bandwidth limit addresses the problem.

For Steam Link, remember that the stream is coming from your own computer rather than a cloud data center. The key wireless section is the phone-to-computer path on the home network; a general internet test may not describe that local connection. If you adjust a resolution or bandwidth limit, test the stream after that one change before altering another setting. This helps avoid mistaking a change in picture quality for a fix to an underlying weak or congested signal.

Reduce stutter and lag in a useful order

Input lag, a delayed image and stuttering can have different causes. Work through the connection first, then adjust stream quality. Avoid assuming that a faster internet plan by itself will remove input lag: service latency, Wi-Fi interference, household traffic, device capability and stream settings all matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Run the service’s own network diagnostic, if available. For GeForce NOW, use its in-app network test rather than treating a generic speed-test ping as a measurement of the route to NVIDIA’s data centers.
  2. Improve the Wi-Fi signal. Try 5 GHz, move nearer to the router, and try a less congested channel if the router provides that option.
  3. Reduce competing traffic while diagnosing. Pause large downloads, video streams and uploads on other devices on the home network, then test the game stream again.
  4. Lower stream quality if the connection still struggles. Reduce resolution or the bandwidth limit. Steam Link exposes those controls in its advanced streaming settings.
  5. Test without a VPN. NVIDIA notes that a VPN can cause higher latency, stuttering or connection to the wrong data center. Compare a session with the VPN off if it is safe and appropriate to do so.
  6. Reassess coverage at your play location. If 5 GHz is weak there, first consider router placement and the equipment you already have. Distance and obstructions can limit 5 GHz performance; a new router is not the first troubleshooting step.

After each change, replay the same game or repeat the service diagnostic when possible. If moving closer improves the session, that points toward coverage or interference. If pausing downloads helps, competing traffic was a factor during the test. If lowering resolution helps, the current stream demand may be too high for the connection in those conditions. These checks do not prove a single cause in every case, but they are more informative than changing several settings or buying equipment at once.

A VPN is worth checking only when you use one and can safely test without it. NVIDIA warns that VPNs may increase latency, cause stutters or connect to the wrong data center. If disabling it changes the result, consider whether the VPN is necessary for that session and follow your own network or workplace rules; do not assume every VPN will have the same effect.

Use controls suited to the service and the way you play

Control support is separate from Wi-Fi quality, but it determines whether a stream is practical to play. For GeForce NOW on iPhone and iPad, NVIDIA says a gamepad is needed; it lists Xbox, Sony DualSense/DualShock 4 and MFi Bluetooth controllers. Keyboard and mouse are not recommended for gameplay through Safari. On Android, NVIDIA recommends a clip for attaching a gamepad to the phone. Treat the clip as an optional way to hold the controller and phone together, not as a connection or performance setting.

Before buying or pairing a controller, confirm compatibility with both the phone and the service you plan to use. A controller that connects to the phone may still not provide the controls you need in every game or streaming app. If you already have a listed controller type, test pairing and gameplay before purchasing another accessory. If you play handheld, a phone gamepad clip may make the setup easier to hold, but it does not change latency, bandwidth or stream quality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to decide whether to raise stream quality

Compare the full setup rather than optimizing a single number. A high-resolution mode is useful only if the phone can display it, the service and membership allow it, and the Wi-Fi connection remains stable. A low latency measurement is useful only if it is measured to the relevant service and the stream can carry its selected quality.

  • Wi-Fi band and signal: Is the phone on a strong connection where you play, preferably 5 GHz when available?
  • Service latency: Does the service’s own diagnostic report an acceptable route to its servers?
  • Available bandwidth: Can the connection sustain the service’s target for the selected resolution and frame rate?
  • Display and service tier: Does the phone support the refresh rate and resolution, and does the membership permit that mode?
  • Controls: Does the service support the controller or input method you intend to use?

If one of these requirements is missing, raising quality will not compensate for it. Keep the mode within the capability of the weakest part of the setup, then change settings only after testing the result.

For a concise comparison, weigh six things together: signal stability, measured latency to the service, available bandwidth, resolution, frame rate and controller compatibility. These are not interchangeable. A faster connection does not resolve an unsupported display mode; a compatible display does not fix interference; and the right controller does not change the route to a cloud server. Choose based on the limitation you can actually identify.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi for game streaming?

Prefer 5 GHz when it is available and provides a strong signal where you play. NVIDIA recommends 5 GHz for GeForce NOW, and Steam Support recommends it over a congested 2.4 GHz band for Steam Link. Distance and obstacles can weaken wireless coverage, so test the connection at your usual play location rather than assuming one band will work best everywhere.

How do I reduce lag when cloud gaming on my phone?

Start with the service’s own network diagnostic, then improve the Wi-Fi signal, reduce competing downloads, streams or uploads, and try a lower resolution or bandwidth limit if stuttering continues. For GeForce NOW, NVIDIA recommends under 40 ms latency in its Android setup guidance and sets an 80 ms limit. Its in-app test measures the route to NVIDIA’s data centers; a generic speed-test ping is not the same measurement.

Is 15 Mbps enough to stream games on a phone?

For GeForce NOW, NVIDIA lists 15 Mbps for HD up to 60 FPS on Android and iPhone or iPad. That is a service target, not a guarantee of a smooth session in every home. The phone, Wi-Fi stability, service route and other network activity still matter. For higher listed GeForce NOW modes, NVIDIA gives 25 Mbps for FHD at 60 FPS and 35 Mbps for Android QHD at 120 FPS.

Will a faster internet plan fix stuttering or input delay?

Not necessarily. Bandwidth, latency, Wi-Fi interference, household traffic, device capability and stream settings can all affect play. A faster plan alone does not guarantee a lower-latency route to a cloud service or a stronger Wi-Fi signal in the room where you play. Check the service diagnostic and local wireless conditions before changing plans.

Do I need a 120 Hz phone for 120 FPS cloud gaming?

For GeForce NOW’s Android 120 FPS mode, NVIDIA says the phone or tablet must have a 120 Hz display. It also lists 35 Mbps for QHD at 120 FPS and requires Ultimate membership for 1440p and 120 FPS on Android. Those Android details should not be assumed to apply identically to iPhone or iPad.

Should I buy a new router for phone game streaming?

Not as the first step. Try a strong 5 GHz connection, move closer to the router, check for a less congested channel if available, and reduce other network traffic while testing. If 5 GHz coverage is poor at your play location, assess router placement and existing equipment before considering a purchase. A router is a conditional solution when current equipment cannot provide suitable coverage, not a guaranteed cure for latency.
