For smoother GTA 5 gameplay, first identify whether you are running GTAV Enhanced or Legacy and whether your limit is the GPU, CPU, VRAM or inconsistent frame time. Update the game and graphics driver, verify the installation, then lower population density and distance scaling for CPU-heavy city scenes, and shadows, reflections and advanced distance options for GPU load. Keep textures as high as your VRAM allows. Add FXAA or a supported DLSS/FSR mode only after the basic frame rate is stable; use frame generation only when the underlying frame rate is already steady.
Start with the edition and your actual bottleneck
GTA V has two separate PC contexts. GTAV Enhanced has newer rendering features and hardware requirements, while GTAV Legacy has a different feature set and performance profile. Rockstar’s current PC requirements page is the authority for the edition installed on your computer, so check it before copying a preset from another system. A setting that is practical in Legacy may be too expensive in Enhanced, particularly when ray-traced effects or frame-generation features are enabled.

Enhanced versus Legacy
Enhanced received FSR and DLSS frame-generation support in update 1.71, plus an option for high-resolution ray-traced reflections. Update 1.72 changed Enhanced to DLSS 2.9.1 and allowed frame generation to work with VSync. Availability depends on your current patch and GPU support; the option may not appear on an unsupported card. Read the patch notes for the version currently installed rather than assuming every PC has the same menu.
Find out what is limiting performance
Use an in-game benchmark or a repeatable route, such as driving through the same dense downtown block at the same time of day. Record resolution, refresh rate, GPU, CPU, system RAM and VRAM. A monitoring overlay can show GPU utilization, CPU thread load, VRAM use, temperatures and frame-time graphs. Average FPS alone can hide hitching, so note the 1% lows when your tool provides them.

- This game will no longer support Windows 7 or 8 operating systems starting January 30, 2024.
- GPU-limited: GPU utilization stays high, GPU frame time is longer than CPU frame time, and lowering resolution or expensive visual effects raises FPS.
- CPU-limited: Busy traffic and pedestrians cause slowdowns while the GPU has headroom. Population density, distance scaling and some shadow work are the first suspects.
- VRAM-limited: The game’s VRAM meter is near its limit, textures stream late, or stutter appears when turning the camera. Lower texture quality or resolution before changing unrelated settings.
- Frame-time instability: The FPS counter may look acceptable while the graph has spikes. Extended distance and shadow options, driver problems, background tasks and shader compilation can all contribute.
There is no authoritative percentage gain for lowering one GTA V setting. Measure your own repeatable scene before and after each meaningful change.
Fix the installation before changing sliders
Rockstar Games Support’s troubleshooting guidance, updated October 7, 2025, puts software maintenance ahead of aggressive quality reductions. Complete these steps in order:
- Launch while connected to the Internet. Rockstar says this lets the game receive the latest patch. Restart the launcher after an update and allow the game to finish applying it.
- Update the graphics driver. Install the current driver for your NVIDIA or AMD GPU, then reboot. If a newly released driver causes an error that did not exist before, Rockstar advises considering a rollback to a known-good version.
- Verify game files in the Rockstar Games Launcher. Use the launcher’s installed-game options to run file verification. Damaged or missing files can look like a graphics-setting problem.
- Repair DirectX and Visual C++ components when prompted. For DirectX or C++ errors, Rockstar directs users to reinstall the redistributables from the game’s own installation folder.
- Address ERR_GFX_STATE. Confirm current drivers first. If the error remains, try the driver rollback guidance and change the graphics API from Vulkan to DirectX 12, then test the same scene again.
Do not evaluate a new preset while a patch is downloading, files are being verified, or the driver is compiling shaders in the background. Those activities can create temporary stutter that is unrelated to image-quality settings.

A balanced 1080p starting profile
The following is a starting point, not a hardware test. Use the monitor’s native resolution when the frame rate is stable; switch to 900p or a supported upscaler only when GPU frame time is the limit. Keep the VRAM meter below its practical limit and validate the result in a busy city scene as well as a quiet rural area.
| Setting | Starting value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Texture quality | High or Very High within the VRAM budget | Preserves surface detail; lower it when the VRAM meter or streaming stutter indicates pressure. |
| Shader quality | High | Good lighting and material quality without the cost of maximum options. |
| Shadow quality | High | High-quality shadows are useful, but Very High can raise GPU frame time substantially. |
| Reflection quality | High | Maintains vehicle and building reflections; reduce it for a GPU-limited system. |
| Reflection MSAA | Off | A frequent high-cost option with a smaller visual benefit than its frame-time cost. |
| Water quality | High | Retains wave and surface detail; lower it if water scenes are the problem. |
| Particle quality | High | Keeps smoke, sparks and explosions detailed without using the most expensive setting. |
| Grass quality | Normal or High | Grass can be expensive in outdoor scenes; Normal is a useful stability fallback. |
| Anisotropic filtering | 8x–16x | Improves surfaces viewed at an angle at a relatively modest cost on modern GPUs. |
| Ambient occlusion | Normal or High | Adds contact shading; reduce it if interior or street scenes remain GPU-bound. |
| Tessellation | Normal or High | Keep geometry detail sensible, then lower it if a GPU-limited scene still misses the target. |
| Population density | About the middle of the slider | Controls traffic and pedestrians and can become CPU-heavy in cities. |
| Population variety | High | Preserves visual variety without creating as many extra entities as higher density. |
| Distance scaling | About the middle of the slider | Balances draw distance against CPU and GPU work. |
| Extended distance scaling | Disabled initially | An expensive advanced option; enable it only after frame time is stable. |
| Extended shadows | Disabled initially | Reduces long-range shadow work while troubleshooting hitching. |
| Anti-aliasing | FXAA, or a supported upscaler | Use before MSAA when GPU time is tight; compare clarity at your normal viewing distance. |
Rockstar described the PC version as having more than 25 configurable graphics settings and a population-density slider. That flexibility is useful, but changing many controls at once makes it impossible to identify the setting responsible for an improvement or a new hitch.
When crowded streets are the problem: a CPU-limited profile
Dense city scenes can cost more than quiet areas because the game must simulate and draw more vehicles, pedestrians and distant objects. NVIDIA’s GeForce guidance notes that “the performance impact of Reflection, Shadow and Post FX settings will be amplified when increasing Population Density.” Treat population and visual effects as interacting controls rather than independent sliders.

- STUNNING VISUALS — Enhanced levels of fidelity and performance with new graphics modes featuring up to 4K resolution, up to 60 frames per second, HDR options, ray tracing, improved texture quality, and more
- FASTER LOADING — Quicker access to the action as the world of Los Santos and Blaine County load in faster than ever before.
- ADAPTIVE TRIGGERS AND HAPTIC FEEDBACK — Feel every moment through the DualSense controller, from directional damage to weather effects, rough road surfaces to explosions, and more.
- TEMPEST 3D AUDIO — Hear the sounds of the world with pinpoint precision: the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of neighbouring gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more.
- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
Lower the simulation workload first
- Move Population Density from its current value toward the middle or lower-middle of the range.
- Lower Distance Scaling one step. This reduces how far traffic, pedestrians and objects are considered and drawn.
- Keep Population Variety higher if you care about seeing different character and vehicle models; variety is not the same workload as adding more entities.
- If the city still misses your frame-time target, reduce Shadow Quality and Post FX one step rather than immediately lowering textures.
- Leave Extended Distance Scaling and Extended Shadows off until a repeatable downtown run is smooth.
Test the same route after each change. If lowering density helps downtown but has little effect in the countryside, that is evidence of a CPU or simulation limit rather than a texture problem.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

At 1440p, 4K or high refresh rates, GPU rendering time usually dominates. Keep textures within VRAM, then reduce the effects that redraw large portions of the scene.
- Turn Reflection MSAA off before reducing texture quality.
- Use High rather than Very High shadows.
- Reduce Reflection Quality, Post FX or Ambient Occlusion one step if the frame-time graph remains high.
- Disable extended shadows and extended distance options while establishing a stable baseline.
- Use FXAA or a supported DLSS/FSR quality mode before conventional MSAA when GPU time is scarce.
- Compare upscaler quality modes at the same resolution and in the same scene; a sharper mode may cost more GPU time.
Lowering textures is not automatically the best GPU fix. Textures mainly affect memory capacity and streaming; effects such as reflections, shadows and anti-aliasing often consume more rendering time. Lower textures when VRAM pressure is visible, not merely because another setting is expensive.

Low-end desktops and laptops
Start at 1920×1080 if the system can sustain it; 1600×900 is a reasonable fallback when 1080p is unstable. Use Normal or High textures according to available VRAM, Normal shadows and grass, low-to-middle population density and distance scaling, FXAA, and no extended distance or shadow options.
Power and temperature checks
- Use the laptop maker’s performance or plugged-in power mode when gaming.
- Confirm the game is using the intended discrete GPU rather than an integrated adapter.
- Watch temperatures and clock speeds for throttling, but do not assume a cooling pad will fix a CPU bottleneck, a driver fault or an overloaded setting.
- Close background recording, browser tabs and overlays temporarily while establishing a baseline.
DLSS, FSR and frame generation in GTAV Enhanced
Enhanced owners with compatible hardware can compare DLSS or FSR at the same output resolution after stabilizing the base frame rate. Upscaling renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the output, so quality modes trade clarity for GPU time. Inspect thin geometry, foliage, signage and moving vehicles for ghosting or shimmering rather than judging only a still screenshot.
Frame generation creates additional displayed frames from rendered frames. It can make motion appear smoother, but it does not remove the CPU work required for traffic and pedestrians and it does not repair a highly variable base frame rate. Enable it only after a repeatable scene is already stable, then test with and without VSync at your monitor’s refresh rate. Update 1.72 specifically states that frame generation can work with VSync; the exact behavior still depends on the current patch and hardware.
Best Value
- Drive through the largest GTA environment ever -- The game has three cities players can explore, for a gaming area 5 times larger than Vice City
- Recruit new characters into a street gang and take over by leading drive-by shootings against rivals
- Steal all-new vehicles, including bicycles
- Improved fighting elements -- smoother hand-to-hand combat, plus the ability to hold a weapon in each hand
- New graphics elements as cars get dirty and even rust, the longer you drive them
If input feels delayed, reduce the quality mode or disable frame generation and target a steadier native frame rate. Legacy players should not expect these Enhanced-only options to appear.
How to test changes without fooling yourself
- Write down the edition, patch, resolution, refresh rate, GPU, CPU, RAM and VRAM.
- Choose one repeatable test: the built-in benchmark or a fixed route through a dense neighborhood followed by an outdoor route.
- Warm up the game for a few minutes so shaders and assets are no longer loading for the first time.
- Change one related group at a time: population and distance for CPU testing; shadows, reflections and anti-aliasing for GPU testing; textures and resolution for VRAM or memory testing.
- Record average FPS, 1% lows when available, GPU and CPU utilization, VRAM use and visible frame-time spikes.
- Keep the change only if it improves the target scene without introducing distracting image defects or worse stutter elsewhere.
A 60-frames-per-second target is presented as supported PC gameplay in Rockstar’s 2015 PC announcement, but it is not a guarantee for every current computer or edition. Choose a frame-time target your hardware can sustain in the busiest scene you actually play, not just in an empty road or the settings menu.
Stutter and error troubleshooting branches
The game stutters after an update
Launch while connected, allow the latest patch to apply, update the GPU driver, reboot, and verify files in the Rockstar Games Launcher. Retest before lowering every quality setting. A patch or damaged file can create hitching that a lower preset will not solve.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStutter appears when turning the camera
Check the VRAM meter and texture streaming. Lower textures one step, reduce resolution or use a supported quality-mode upscaler, then repeat the same camera movement. If the meter was not near its limit and GPU utilization is low, investigate CPU load, background processes and extended distance options instead.
Only busy traffic causes drops
Lower population density first, then distance scaling. Keep variety higher if desired, and reduce shadows or Post FX only if the crowded route still misses the frame-time target.
ERR_GFX_STATE or DirectX/C++ errors
Use current drivers, consider a rollback if the newest driver is implicated, and switch the graphics API from Vulkan to DirectX 12 for ERR_GFX_STATE. For DirectX or C++ installation errors, reinstall the redistributables from the game folder as Rockstar Support recommends. Verify files after repairs.
Quick Recap
A practical order for future tuning
- Confirm Enhanced or Legacy and check the current requirements and patch notes.
- Update, verify and repair the installation before performance tuning.
- Measure a repeatable scene and identify GPU, CPU, VRAM or frame-time limits.
- For CPU limits, lower population density and distance scaling.
- For GPU limits, lower reflection MSAA, shadows, reflections, Post FX and advanced extensions.
- For VRAM limits, lower textures or output resolution.
- Add FXAA, DLSS or FSR, then test frame generation only on Enhanced with compatible hardware and a stable base rate.
- Keep a written record of the settings that meet your frame-time target in the busiest scene.
