For bright daytime 360-degree recording, start with Insta360’s official X4 Air baseline: Video mode, 8K at 30 fps, AdaptiveTone enabled, Standard color, Medium video sharpness, and Auto for both shutter speed and ISO. That preset is intended for well-lit scenes, not every subject or lighting condition. Choose a different frame rate or workflow when motion, low light, backlighting, or a single-lens composition is the priority.

Recommended starting settings

The settings below are Insta360’s general-purpose recommendation for daytime or otherwise well-lit 360 footage. The recommendation comes from the manufacturer; the source does not state a publication date, and it is not an independent laboratory result.

Control Daylight starting value Why it is used
Mode Video Provides the normal 360 video workflow.
Resolution and frame rate 8K/30 fps Prioritizes fine detail and room to reframe a 360 image while retaining a conventional frame rate.
Tone processing AdaptiveTone on Insta360 lists it for its well-lit general-purpose setup.
Color Standard Uses the manufacturer’s ready-to-use daytime color setting.
Video sharpness Medium A balanced starting point rather than an aggressively sharpened image.
Shutter speed Auto Lets the camera adapt exposure as the scene changes.
ISO Auto Lets the camera raise or lower sensitivity as needed for exposure.

Use this as a baseline, then make one change at a time while watching a short test clip. Resolution, frame rate, aspect ratio, and shooting mode determine which choices the camera actually offers, so an option shown in one mode may not appear in another.

Choose the right capture mode before changing numbers

Sharpness and smoothness depend as much on the recording mode as on the numerical settings. A 360 clip records the whole scene for reframing later. Single-lens Video records a conventional view, while FreeFrame Video gives a flat-video workflow with an in-camera Horizon Lock control. Decide where you will set the final viewpoint before selecting resolution and frame rate.

360 Video

Use 360 Video when you want to choose the viewing direction after recording. The camera’s available frame rates and resolutions must be checked on the current mode screen; do not assume that a rate advertised for single-lens Video is available for every 360 format. FlowState stabilization for 360 footage is applied during editing rather than in-camera, according to Insta360’s mode compatibility information.

Single-lens Video

Single-lens Video is appropriate when the final composition is known during capture. X4 Air supports 4K 16:9 up to 60 fps in this mode. That 60-fps capability is a single-lens specification and should not be generalized to 360 recording or to other aspect ratios.

FreeFrame Video

FreeFrame Video is the X4 Air mode with an in-camera Horizon Lock control. It is useful when a level-looking horizon matters during capture and you want a flat-video style output. Confirm the available resolution and frame-rate combinations on the camera, because mode and aspect ratio constrain the choices.

Settings for common shooting situations

Situation Recommended approach Trade-off to check
Bright daylight, general 360 capture Use the official 8K/30 fps daytime baseline with AdaptiveTone, Standard color, Medium sharpness, Auto shutter, and Auto ISO. It is optimized for well-lit scenes; it is not a universal low-light or high-speed-motion preset.
Fast movement or slow motion Consider a higher supported frame rate when the selected mode and aspect ratio offer one. For single-lens 16:9 Video, 4K up to 60 fps is supported. Higher frame rate can improve motion rendition or provide slow-motion flexibility, but the available option may require a lower resolution or a different mode.
Low light Start from a supported mode, record short comparisons, and inspect noise, detail, and motion blur. Adjust shutter speed and ISO only after checking the camera’s available controls. There is no single universal X4 Air low-light setting established by the official guidance. Raising ISO brightens the image but can reduce image quality; a slower shutter can increase motion blur.
Strong backlight Consider Active HDR, as recommended in Insta360’s product guide for strong-light or backlit environments. Active HDR availability depends on the selected resolution and frame rate, so verify the choices shown on the camera.

How to tune frame rate for smooth motion

Frame rate controls how frequently the camera records motion. Thirty frames per second is the manufacturer’s daytime starting point because it balances detail and normal playback. A higher supported rate records more motion samples and can be preferable for rapid movement or a slow-motion edit, but it does not automatically make a 360 clip better. A mode that offers 60 fps in single-lens 4K 16:9 does not prove that 360 8K can run at 60 fps.

  1. Choose 360 Video, single-lens Video, or FreeFrame Video according to the final viewing workflow.
  2. Open the mode’s resolution and frame-rate choices on the camera and note which combinations are actually available.
  3. For ordinary daylight 360 capture, select 8K/30 fps when it is offered.
  4. For action or slow motion, select the highest useful supported frame rate, then confirm that the resulting resolution still meets your reframing needs.
  5. Record a short pan or moving-subject test. Check edges and fast movement at normal playback speed before committing to a long take.

Higher resolution preserves more detail for reframing, while higher frame rate prioritizes temporal smoothness. The best choice is therefore a delivery decision: preserve 8K detail for flexible 360 reframing, or trade some resolution for more motion samples when movement is the main subject.

Low-light setup without a misleading “best” preset

The official X4 Air recommendation establishes a bright-scene baseline, not a universal night setting. In dim conditions, exposure, noise, and motion blur pull in different directions. Auto shutter and Auto ISO are a sensible first test because they expose the scene automatically, but the result should be judged in the actual location rather than copied from a daylight guide.

A repeatable low-light test

  1. Keep the same mode, framing, and subject for each clip.
  2. Record a short clip with the camera’s automatic exposure controls.
  3. Compare a second clip after changing only one exposure control that the current mode permits.
  4. Inspect shadow areas for noise, fine textures for smearing, and moving subjects for blur.
  5. Use the version that preserves the detail and motion acceptable for the final platform; do not select a setting solely because the preview looks brighter.

Increasing ISO makes a dark image brighter, but higher sensitivity can affect image quality. A slower shutter can gather more light while making movement look blurred. Conversely, a faster shutter can reduce blur but may require more ISO or a brighter scene. Because the available controls vary by mode and firmware, use the values shown on the current camera screen rather than assuming every exposure option is available in 360 recording.

Backlit scenes and Active HDR

When a bright sky, window, or lamp sits behind the subject, normal exposure can leave either the background or the subject too dark. Insta360’s official X4 Air product guidance recommends considering Active HDR in strong-light or backlit environments. Treat it as a mode-dependent option: check which resolution and frame-rate combinations remain available after enabling it, and make a short test before a critical shot.

Active HDR is a response to contrast, not a replacement for clean lenses or a secure mount. If the clip still looks soft or unstable, troubleshoot those physical causes before changing image processing.

Stabilization, Horizon Lock, and smooth movement

FlowState is enabled by default for X4 Air Video and Loop Recording. Insta360 describes its purpose this way: “The stabilization feature effectively reduces shakiness during video recording, resulting in smoother and more stable images.” That statement is a manufacturer description, not an independent test result.

When stabilization is applied

  • For X4 Air 360 modes, the compatibility table indicates that stabilization is not performed in-camera. FlowState can be applied during editing in the Insta360 app or Insta360 Studio for the listed 360 video modes.
  • For flat or single-lens modes, in-camera and post-production support varies by mode. Check the mode’s current compatibility information rather than assuming every mode behaves the same way.
  • FreeFrame Video is the mode that provides an in-camera Horizon Lock control. Look for that control on the camera’s mode screen.

Keep the camera physically stable

Electronic stabilization cannot correct every physical problem. Insta360 advises checking that selfie sticks and helmet mounts are assembled securely; a loose accessory can introduce movement that appears as shake in playback. Tighten the connection before changing stabilization settings, and test the complete rig with the intended movement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prevent softness before recording

Many clips that look unsharp are being degraded before the camera applies any sharpness setting. Clean both lenses with a professional lens cloth or tissue. Insta360 warns that fingerprints, dust, and oil can create flare or blurring. Inspect the lenses under a light, especially after handling the camera or changing a mount.

  • Clean the lenses before an important take and whenever a flare or hazy patch appears.
  • Check that a protective accessory is not intruding into the lens view.
  • Secure the selfie stick, helmet mount, and camera connection so they cannot loosen during movement.
  • Review a short test at the intended playback size; a camera preview can hide softness that becomes obvious after export.
  • If stabilization appears incorrect, update the Insta360 app or Studio to a current version before diagnosing the footage as a camera failure.

Do not compensate for a dirty lens by increasing the Medium sharpness setting. Sharpening can accentuate edges, but it cannot restore detail lost to oil, dust, flare, focus problems, or motion blur.

Export settings that preserve the captured detail

Capture bitrate and export bitrate are different numbers. The X4 Air product specifications list H.264 and H.265 recording support and a maximum video bitrate of 180 Mbps. That is a camera-recording specification; it is not the same as the export value recommended by Insta360’s software guide.

Preferred Studio workflow

  1. Open the original footage in Insta360 Studio.
  2. Apply the required 360 reframing or stabilization, including FlowState for 360 footage when needed.
  3. Choose H.265 when the destination supports it.
  4. Set the export bitrate to 50 or higher, following Insta360’s Studio guidance.
  5. Play the exported file from start to finish and check for unexpected softness, stitching errors, or motion artifacts before uploading.

Exporting in the Insta360 app

When exporting in the mobile app, Insta360’s guide recommends 4K resolution and a bitrate of 50. The guide does not make that app value interchangeable with the camera’s 180 Mbps maximum capture bitrate. Use the app recommendation for an app export, and use Studio when you need the manufacturer’s preferred desktop workflow.

Storage and recording requirements

Specification Official value Practical implication
Maximum video bitrate 180 Mbps This is the camera’s listed maximum recording bitrate, not an export setting.
Maximum microSD capacity 1 TB Cards above this capacity are outside the stated specification.
Recommended card type UHS-I V30 Use a card that meets this class and confirm exact compatibility before recording.

High-resolution recording produces large files, especially at the listed maximum capture bitrate. Format and test the card in the camera according to the camera’s current instructions, and leave enough free space for the complete take plus a backup copy. The official specification establishes capacity and card class, but it does not state a recording-time figure for every resolution or frame rate.

Practical presets by intended result

Goal Mode and priority What to verify
Maximum 360 reframing flexibility in daylight 360 Video at the 8K/30 fps daytime baseline. FlowState will be applied in post-production; confirm the current 360 options on the mode screen.
Smoother action in a conventional frame Single-lens Video, using a supported higher frame rate such as 4K 16:9 up to 60 fps. Higher-rate choices vary with aspect ratio and mode; check the actual list before recording.
Level-looking flat footage during capture FreeFrame Video with its in-camera Horizon Lock control. Verify the selected resolution and frame rate remain available with Horizon Lock.
High-contrast daylight or backlight Use the normal mode that fits the shot and consider Active HDR. Check which resolution and frame-rate combinations Active HDR permits.
Dim scene Use short exposure tests rather than a fixed internet preset. Compare noise, retained detail, and motion blur after changing one control at a time.

Troubleshooting soft, shaky, or noisy footage

The image is soft in every clip

Clean the lenses first and inspect for fingerprints, dust, oil, flare, or an obstruction from a protective accessory. Confirm that the exported file was not reduced to a low-resolution preview. If softness remains, compare the original file in Studio with the final export to determine whether the loss occurred during recording or export.

The image is sharp when still but blurred during movement

Motion blur is usually an exposure or movement problem rather than a sharpness-slider problem. Test a supported higher frame rate for the selected mode, then compare shutter and ISO behavior in the actual light. A faster shutter can reduce blur but may require more light or ISO; a slower shutter can brighten the scene while making movement less crisp.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The footage shakes even though FlowState is enabled

For 360 recording, confirm that FlowState is being applied during editing. Then check the selfie stick, helmet mount, and camera connection for looseness. Update the Insta360 app or Studio if playback or stabilization behaves unexpectedly, and re-export a short section before processing the entire project.

The horizon tilts in a flat clip

Use FreeFrame Video when you need the X4 Air’s in-camera Horizon Lock control. In other modes, determine whether leveling is available in the current in-camera or post-production workflow; the compatibility varies by mode.

Night footage is bright but ugly

Do not judge exposure by brightness alone. Compare clips for noise in shadows, texture detail, and blur on moving subjects. Reduce unnecessary ISO where the mode permits, avoid a shutter speed that makes the subject smear, and choose the compromise that matches the final viewing size.

The exported file looks worse than the original

Check that you used the recommended export path: Studio with H.265 and bitrate 50 or higher, or the app’s 4K and bitrate-50 recommendation. Remember that 180 Mbps is the camera’s maximum capture bitrate, not a requirement to enter during export. Verify that the destination platform has not recompressed the upload before concluding that the camera footage is soft.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A simple decision rule

Use the 8K/30 fps daytime baseline when you are recording a well-lit 360 scene and want maximum reframing detail. Move to a higher supported frame rate when motion rendition or slow motion matters more, and choose single-lens or FreeFrame when you need a conventional composition or in-camera Horizon Lock. In low light, test rather than trust a universal preset; in backlight, consider Active HDR. Finally, protect the result with clean lenses, tight mounts, post-production FlowState for 360 footage, and the appropriate Studio or app export settings.
