There is no verified “best settings” preset for Salt and Soil yet. The Steam listing still describes the game as coming soon, and neither the listing nor the developer’s public map discussions documents a complete graphics menu, recommended values, frame-rate targets, or tested performance results. The safest approach is to treat the published requirements as a starting baseline, change only controls that your current build actually exposes, and judge every change by two outcomes: steadier performance and clear roads, borders, settlements, labels, resources, and historical-event markers.
What you can set today—and what remains unknown
Salt and Soil: A Frontier Family Sim is a single-player strategy, simulation, and RPG game by DelosX. Its systems cover resources, labor, buildings, animals, trade, neighboring communities, changing borders, and threats across a family history from 1609 to 1900. That makes the map a working decision tool rather than a decorative background.
The current Steam page marks the game as coming soon, so a public release build is not yet established. A developer update says the first playtest wave ended and that additional access would return in separate waves after time for feedback and changes. Check the current Steam store page for the access status of your region and account.

Salt and Soil system requirements
Steam publishes minimum specifications for Windows and macOS. They are compatibility baselines, not benchmark results: the listing does not promise a frame rate, resolution, visual preset, or smooth play at minimum hardware.

If your computer is below one of these published minimums, the store page provides no evidence that the game will run acceptably. If it meets them, you have met the stated baseline only; actual performance will depend on the final build, display mode, map situation, and other factors that have not been published.
How to interpret the memory and graphics entries
- The Windows requirement is 4 GB of system memory and Intel UHD Graphics 620 or an AMD-equivalent processor and graphics capability as specified by the listing. It is not a claim that every integrated GPU with a similar name performs identically.
- The macOS requirement separates Apple Silicon integrated graphics from Intel hardware and asks for 8 GB of memory. An M1 or M2 entry is listed as “or better,” not as a measured performance tier.
- The 1 GB Windows and 2 GB macOS figures are available-storage requirements from the store listing, not estimates of future patches, saves, or operating-system overhead.
Availability, updates, and changing defaults
The first playtest wave has ended, and the developer described future access as separate waves with time between them for reviewing feedback and making changes. A test build can therefore differ from a later wave or the eventual release. A menu item, default value, or map treatment seen by one group should not be treated as universal.

When access returns, verify the installed build and read its own settings screen before following any guide. After a substantial update, repeat a short readability and performance check: open the same map area, use the same zoom and window size, and confirm that roads, borders, settlement markers, resources, labels, and event markers still behave as expected. This avoids carrying an old configuration forward after the game changes.
Why readability matters more than visual richness
The developer has described map readability as a design priority. In a developer-authored Reddit post, Roman explained three visual iterations: The first was readable but looked like a diagram. The second had the atmosphere I wanted, but roads and buildings vanished into the texture. The third is less lush, but actually works as a strategy map.
That trade-off is especially important in a frontier-management game. A textured, atmospheric surface is not useful if it hides the route to a settlement, a border change, or a resource node while you are deciding where to assign labor or build. A plainer map can be the better setting when it keeps the information needed for the next decision visible.

In a later developer discussion, Roman wrote: I decided to stick with the third version of the map after all, because the gameplay doesn’t require very complex interaction with the map—you need to keep an eye on borders, resources, settlements, and historical events, and it’s easier to do that using markers that are clearly visible on any type of terrain.
This explains the practical target for tuning: preserve the contrast and separation of strategic information, not maximum visual detail.

Use the following process only with controls that are visible in your current build. It avoids presenting unconfirmed options as if they were official recommendations.
- Record the starting state. Note the display mode, resolution, scaling value, and any other graphics controls the build actually shows. If a control is not listed, do not try to infer a hidden command or configuration file.
- Choose a repeatable map view. Use the same settlement, terrain type, zoom level, and activity each time you compare performance. A different camera position can contain a different amount of information and make a change look better or worse than it is.
- Change one exposed control. Apply one adjustment, restart only if the build requests it, and return to the same view. Changing several values together makes it impossible to know which change affected performance or legibility.
- If resolution or display scaling is offered, test a lower value as general troubleshooting. This is a conventional PC diagnostic step, not a Salt and Soil developer setting recommendation. Stop if text, roads, borders, or markers become difficult to distinguish.
- Check strategic information, not only motion. Confirm that road lines, settlement symbols, border outlines, labels, resource indicators, and historical-event markers remain separable from terrain. A visually smoother view is not an improvement if it hides one of those items.
- Use map modes or overlays only when the build provides them. If an overlay exists, enable the one relevant to the current task—for example, resources while planning production—and verify that it does not conceal another essential marker.
- Keep the change only when both criteria improve. Retain an adjustment when the same view is easier to read and performance is more consistent. Revert it when it improves one criterion while harming the other.
- Write down the result. Recording the control, old value, new value, map view, and observed effect gives you a recoverable configuration when a later playtest wave or patch changes defaults.
How to prioritize performance without losing the map
Start with the least disruptive change
When the build exposes resolution or display scaling, test that before making broad visual changes. Resolution affects the amount of work the graphics system must draw, but a lower value can make small labels and icons less distinct. Compare at the distance and window size you actually use, not only while zoomed in.
Keep information-bearing elements readable
Do not trade away the elements that drive decisions. Borders show jurisdiction and pressure from neighboring communities; resource indicators support production planning; settlement markers identify places that may otherwise blend into terrain; historical-event markers connect the map to the changing period. If any of these disappear into the ground texture, the setting is counterproductive even if movement looks smoother.
Do not assume texture or effect controls exist
The public material does not list texture-detail, lighting, shadow, particle, anti-aliasing, or effects switches. If a future build exposes one, test it individually and document its effect. Until then, instructions to “turn textures to low” or “disable effects” would be guesses rather than Salt and Soil guidance.
Readability checks for common play situations
A single screenshot is not enough to judge a strategy map. Use several situations that exercise the information the developer says must remain visible.

- Settlement planning: zoom to the level at which you normally place or inspect buildings. Make sure settlement symbols and building footprints do not merge with terrain texture.
- Border monitoring: inspect an area where neighboring communities or threats are present. Border lines should remain distinct from roads and natural color changes.
- Resource work: open the view you use to find materials and verify that resource indicators are not lost against the ground.
- Historical events: check that event markers remain identifiable when several map features overlap. This matters across the 1609–1900 family-history span because the map must communicate change over time.
- Travel and roads: follow a route at normal zoom. Roads should be traceable without relying on maximum zoom or memorizing their position.
A short pre-tuning checklist
Before changing anything, confirm four basics. First, identify whether you are using a Windows or macOS build and compare it with the corresponding Steam minimums. Second, note the monitor or laptop display resolution and the window size you normally use. Third, choose one quiet map view and one busier view so you can distinguish a general problem from a situation-specific slowdown. Fourth, capture the initial values shown in the game so you can restore them.
Keep the test conditions stable. Close or pause unrelated work only if it is part of your normal play routine, and avoid comparing a settlement view with an empty section of terrain. Do not treat a brief improvement after loading as proof of a lasting change; repeat the same camera movement and inspect the same markers more than once.
If performance is poor
First determine whether the problem is reproducible
Return to the same map position and repeat the same camera movement after each change. Note whether the slowdown occurs everywhere or only when many markers, settlements, or map elements are visible. The available information contains no frame-time or frame-rate measurements, so describe the symptom rather than assigning an unsupported number.
Separate performance from readability
A map can feel slow because camera movement stutters, or it can feel difficult because labels and markers are visually crowded. Treat those as separate observations. A resolution change may affect rendering workload while simultaneously reducing label clarity; record both outcomes.
Revert when a change creates a new problem
If roads vanish, borders become ambiguous, or labels require excessive zoom after an adjustment, return to the previous value. There is no published “safe” preset to fall back on, so keeping a note of the last readable configuration is useful during experimental builds.
If the map is hard to read but performance is acceptable
Do not automatically lower every visual option. The developer’s own iterations show that additional atmosphere can obscure roads and buildings. Look first for an exposed map mode, overlay, display scale, or resolution control that improves separation without hiding strategic markers. If none exists, report the specific failure—such as a border blending into terrain or a resource icon disappearing—through the playtest feedback channel available for your build.

Roman mentioned possibly retaining an earlier map style as an optional setting if enough players requested it. That statement describes a possibility, not confirmation that an alternate map-style option exists in the current build. Do not search for or advertise a “retro” switch unless the in-game menu actually includes one.

- Copying settings from another game: familiar labels such as shadows or anti-aliasing may not exist here, and their usual effect cannot be assumed.
- Changing several values at once: this removes the ability to identify which adjustment helped or hurt.
- Judging only by a screenshot: a still image cannot show camera stutter or whether markers remain visible while panning.
- Testing only at maximum zoom: information that looks clear close up may disappear at the normal strategic view.
- Confusing storage with memory: the 1 GB Windows and 2 GB macOS figures describe space, while RAM is listed separately as 4 GB and 8 GB.
- Assuming minimum means recommended: the Steam figures establish a floor, not a performance target.
Comparing settings when more options arrive
If later builds add selectable presets or map styles, compare them on the same four axes rather than judging screenshots alone:

What to report during a playtest
Useful feedback is specific and repeatable. Include your platform, operating-system version, whether the issue appears in a quiet or busy map area, the approximate zoom level, and the exact marker or label that becomes unclear. Describe whether the symptom is stutter, long loading, disappearing roads, overlapping icons, or unreadable text. If you changed a control, include its original and new values and say whether reverting solved the problem. This gives the developer a clearer lead than calling a preset “too slow” or “too busy.”
What not to claim about a “best” configuration
- Do not claim a particular frame rate at the listed minimum hardware; no such measurement is published.
- Do not present Windows or macOS minimums as recommended specifications or a guarantee of smooth play.
- Do not name a graphics preset, frame cap, render-scale value, accessibility feature, or map-style toggle unless the current build exposes it.
- Do not describe the developer’s possible alternate map style as an existing option.
- Do not infer performance statistics from the 4 GB Windows, 8 GB macOS, 1 GB storage, or 2 GB storage figures; those are store requirements.
Practical starting point
For a Windows installation, begin by checking that the computer meets Windows 10/11 64-bit, an Intel Core i3 or AMD-equivalent processor, 4 GB RAM, Intel UHD Graphics 620, broadband internet, and 1 GB available storage as listed by Steam. For macOS, check macOS 10.15 Catalina, an Intel Core i5 or Apple M1/M2 or better, 8 GB RAM, Apple Silicon integrated graphics, broadband internet, and 2 GB available storage.
Once you have an accessible build, leave the initial values unchanged long enough to establish a repeatable map view. Then test one exposed control at a time, beginning with resolution or display scaling only if necessary, and keep the setting that preserves strategic markers while making the view more consistent. Because the game is still in development, repeat this check after major updates rather than assuming an old configuration remains optimal.
