Run AI-generated code as untrusted software. The safest practical baseline is a disposable, rootless container running under a dedicated non-root UID, Docker’s default seccomp profile, no privileged mode, no added Linux capabilities, narrowly scoped mounts, deny-by-default networking, strict CPU/memory/process limits, and automatic teardown. If the code is hostile, handles sensitive credentials, or needs broad kernel or device access, use a microVM instead of relying on a container boundary.
This guide gives a concrete configuration, explains why each control matters, and shows when containers stop being an adequate isolation layer.
What makes AI-generated code different?
Code produced by an agent or model should be treated like code downloaded from an unknown contributor. It can contain accidental destructive commands, dependency confusion, data exfiltration, cryptomining, persistence mechanisms, or deliberate prompt-injection payloads. Familiarity with the model, repository, or developer does not make the output trusted.

Container or microVM: choose the boundary first
Linux containers isolate processes with namespaces and cgroups, but they share the host kernel. The UK National Cyber Security Centre describes the container boundary as “considerably less simple and less robust” than the boundary between a virtual machine and its host. A microVM adds a virtualized kernel boundary and is the safer choice when a breakout would have serious consequences.
| Decision factor | Hardened container | MicroVM |
|---|---|---|
| Host isolation | Shares the host kernel; a kernel or runtime vulnerability can affect the host. | Provides a separate guest kernel behind a hypervisor boundary. |
| Startup and integration | Usually starts quickly and works naturally with ordinary developer tools, filesystems, and CI systems. | Typically has more startup and orchestration overhead and may require integration work. |
| Device and privilege compatibility | Convenient for normal builds, interpreters, compilers, and tests that do not need host devices. | Better when the workload would otherwise require privileged mode, unusual kernel features, or broad device access. |
| Network and credentials | Requires explicit network policy and careful handling of mounts or proxies. | Can place the guest, network, workspace, and credential proxy in separate policy layers. |
| Use it when | Code is untrusted but can run with ordinary user-space permissions and no sensitive host access. | Code is actively hostile, processes sensitive secrets, targets a high-value host, or needs broad privileges. |
Docker describes its AI Sandboxes as microVM environments with separate hypervisor, network, workspace, and credential-proxy layers. The general principle is more important than a particular product: use a stronger boundary when the consequence of a container escape is unacceptable.
The hardened container baseline
Apply these controls together. Any single setting can be undermined by a broad mount, a socket, a privileged flag, or unrestricted egress.
Use a dedicated non-root identity
Run the application as a UID that is not root inside the container, and make the image’s default user non-root where possible. A dedicated UID prevents many filesystem and post-exploitation actions even if the process is compromised.
Rootless Docker goes further by running both the daemon and containers without root privileges inside a user namespace. Docker says rootless mode mitigates potential vulnerabilities in the daemon and container runtime. Enable it for the account that launches the agent, then verify that the command is talking to the rootless daemon rather than a system-wide root-owned daemon.
- Create a container user with only the groups it needs.
- Do not add the user to host groups that grant device or daemon control.
- Ensure workspace files are owned by the sandbox UID, not by a privileged host account.
Keep the default seccomp profile
Docker’s default seccomp profile is a moderately protective syscall allowlist. Docker documents it as blocking around 44 system calls out of more than 300 and says changing it is not recommended without a specific requirement. Keep the default profile unless a measured workload failure identifies a syscall that is genuinely needed.
Do not “fix” an error by disabling seccomp globally. First identify the failing operation, determine whether it is safe, and create the smallest reviewed exception. A generated build that needs a new syscall is a reason to investigate the build, not a reason to grant every syscall.

Drop capabilities and prohibit privilege escalation
Start with every Linux capability removed. Add one back only when the workload demonstrably requires it and you understand its effect.
--cap-drop=ALL --security-opt=no-new-privileges
Avoid --privileged. Kubernetes documentation warns that privileged containers receive all capabilities and can bypass important restrictions. If a tool needs raw sockets, kernel modules, device access, or another unusually powerful feature, treat that requirement as a signal to move the workload to a microVM or a separate disposable host.
Make the filesystem narrow and disposable
Mount only a dedicated project directory. Prefer read-only access for source that does not need modification, and put build output in a temporary writable volume or writable layer that will be destroyed after the run.
- Never mount the host root directory, an entire home directory, or unrelated project trees.
- Never mount the host Docker socket. Access to that socket can let code control the Docker daemon and create containers with host-level access.
- Do not mount SSH private keys, cloud credential directories, password stores, browser profiles, or signing keys.
- Use a read-only root filesystem where the program supports it, with narrowly sized temporary filesystems for paths such as
/tmp. - Copy results out through an explicit artifact directory after validation rather than exposing the host filesystem.
A mount is an authority grant. Review every source path and every read-write flag as if you were approving a permission request.
Recommended Free Tools
Start with no network
Use network isolation as the default. For Docker, that normally means --network=none for code that does not need network access. This prevents package downloads, callbacks, scanning of internal services, and accidental transmission of source files.
When network access is required, allow only the destinations and protocols needed for the specific task. Package installation might need a registry and its authentication endpoint; an integration test might need one test service. Keep the agent away from production networks and management interfaces. Use a separate egress proxy or policy-controlled network rather than giving the container a general route.
Docker Sandboxes describe policy-controlled outbound traffic. Regardless of implementation, record the allowlist, expire it when the task ends, and inspect logs for unexpected destinations. Network isolation should be in place before you tune kernel capabilities; Kubernetes recommends that ordering because network exposure can turn a local compromise into a broader incident.

Constrain CPU, memory, processes, storage, and time
Resource limits contain runaway loops, fork bombs, oversized builds, and denial-of-service behavior. Set limits before execution:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- CPU: cap the number of cores or CPU quota available to the container.
- Memory: set a hard limit and decide whether swap is permitted; a build that exceeds the limit should fail rather than consume host memory.
- Processes: set a PID limit to contain fork bombs and process storms.
- Disk: use a size-limited temporary volume or filesystem quota for source copies, caches, and build artifacts.
- Wall-clock time: stop the job after a defined timeout and kill descendants, not just the foreground process.
There is no universal safe number. Measure a normal build, test, or inference run, add a documented margin, and revise the limit when the project changes. Record the limit with the job so a later failure can be distinguished from a resource-policy decision.
A practical Docker launch pattern
The following pattern shows the controls that should be present. Set IMAGE_REF to a reviewed image reference pinned by digest, and set WORKSPACE to a dedicated directory containing only the files needed for this run.
docker run --rm
--user 10000:10000
--read-only
--tmpfs /tmp:rw,nosuid,nodev,noexec,size=512m
--cap-drop=ALL
--security-opt=no-new-privileges
--network=none
--cpus=2
--memory=4g
--pids-limit=256
--mount type=bind,src="$WORKSPACE",dst=/workspace,readonly
--mount type=tmpfs,dst=/work-output,tmpfs-size=2g
"$IMAGE_REF"
/bin/sh -lc 'cd /workspace && ./run-tests.sh'
This is a starting profile, not a universal command. A compiler may need a writable build directory, a language runtime may require a writable cache, and a test suite may need a narrowly scoped service network. Add only the exception you can explain and test.
When source must be modified
Bind-mount the source read-only and copy it into a temporary writable directory inside the container, or mount a disposable writable volume at the exact path that needs changes. Do not make the host checkout writable merely to simplify an agent workflow. After the run, inspect the diff and copy approved files out through a controlled export step.
When dependencies must be downloaded
Build or warm a dependency cache in a separate, controlled phase. If the execution phase needs downloads, permit only the required registries through an egress policy, use short-lived credentials, and capture the resolved dependency lockfile. Never provide broad cloud credentials just because a package manager can accept them.
Pin and verify the software supply chain
An isolated runtime does not make a malicious image or dependency safe. Review generated Dockerfiles before building them. Prefer a base image pinned by digest or a reviewed immutable tag, and verify signatures or other integrity metadata where available. The NCSC calls for encryption and integrity checking when images are fetched.

- Inspect every
FROM, package repository, install script, and entrypoint. - Resolve dependencies with a lockfile and review changes rather than accepting unconstrained version ranges.
- Scan the image and dependency tree before execution, then rescan when the base image or lockfile changes.
- Build in a clean environment so a compromised host cache cannot silently supply artifacts.
- Keep provenance and build logs with the output so an incident can be reconstructed.
Generated code can also generate its own container configuration. Treat that configuration as code requiring review; do not let an agent add privileged flags, host mounts, daemon sockets, or permissive network settings without a human approval step.
Credentials and secrets
The safest secret is one the sandbox never receives. Remove credentials from the environment, filesystem, shell history, and mounted configuration whenever the task can run without them.

Prefer a credential proxy that performs an allowlisted action without exposing the raw secret to the process. Keep production credentials, signing keys, SSH keys, and cloud administrator tokens outside the container entirely.
- Use separate test accounts with minimal permissions.
- Set an expiration time and revoke the token during teardown.
- Redact secrets from logs and artifacts before exporting them.
- Assume generated code can read every environment variable and file visible to its UID.
Lifecycle: create, observe, destroy
- Prepare: copy only the required source into a dedicated workspace, select a digest-pinned image, and define resource and network policy.
- Launch: use rootless Docker when feasible, a non-root UID, the default seccomp profile, dropped capabilities, no-new-privileges, and no privileged mode.
- Observe: capture stdout, stderr, exit status, resource events, network policy decisions, and the list of artifacts produced.
- Stop on policy violation: terminate on timeout, unexpected network access, excessive resource use, or an attempt to access a forbidden path.
- Validate: inspect generated files, dependency changes, and test artifacts outside the sandbox before accepting them.
- Destroy: remove the container, temporary volumes, writable layers, caches containing untrusted output, and temporary credentials.
The --rm option removes the container record when it exits, but it is not a complete cleanup strategy. Explicitly remove named temporary volumes, revoke credentials, and delete exported artifacts that were not approved.
Common unsafe settings and safer replacements
| Unsafe choice | Why it fails | Safer replacement |
|---|---|---|
--privileged |
Grants broad capabilities and weakens device and kernel restrictions. | Drop all capabilities; redesign the workload or use a microVM if privilege is essential. |
Mounting /var/run/docker.sock |
Lets code issue commands to the host Docker daemon and potentially obtain host control. | Do not mount the socket. Build images in a separate service with an isolated, narrowly authorized interface. |
| Mounting the home directory | Exposes credentials, personal files, source trees, and configuration. | Mount one dedicated workspace, preferably read-only. |
| Running as UID 0 | Turns an in-container exploit into a more powerful foothold and increases damage from mistakes. | Use a dedicated non-root UID and rootless Docker. |
--network=host or unrestricted bridge networking |
Exposes host services or permits arbitrary outbound communication. | Use no network, then an allowlist or isolated proxy for a documented requirement. |
| Disabling seccomp to make a build pass | Removes a syscall restriction without proving the syscall is safe. | Keep the default profile and investigate the exact failing operation. |
| Permanent writable volumes | Allow persistence across runs and can retain malicious tools or secrets. | Use disposable, size-limited volumes and destroy them after export. |
Troubleshooting without weakening the boundary
The process cannot write files
Check whether the root filesystem is read-only, the target path is outside the writable temporary mount, or the UID lacks ownership. Add a small writable tmpfs or disposable volume at the required path. Do not make the host bind mount writable as a first response.
Package installation fails
Confirm that the container is intentionally offline. If downloads are required, add only the registry endpoints and ports needed, use a temporary token, and record the resulting lockfile. For repeatability, prefer a separately built dependency image or cache.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

A test needs a service
Place the service in a separate test network with no route to production or the host management plane. Allow only the container-to-service traffic required by the test, and keep the agent’s egress policy independent from the service’s policy.

A tool reports a missing syscall or capability
Identify the exact syscall or capability and determine whether the feature is essential. Check for a less-privileged mode or an alternative implementation. If the requirement is broad, move the job to a microVM rather than adding a large set of capabilities or disabling seccomp.
The container consumes too many resources
Inspect memory, CPU, PID, disk, and elapsed-time events. Increase one limit only after confirming normal workload requirements, and retain a timeout and process limit even for trusted projects.
When to require a microVM
Use a microVM when any of these conditions applies:
- The code is intentionally hostile, security-testing code, or sourced from an unknown party.
- The host contains valuable intellectual property, production credentials, customer data, or administrative access.
- The workload needs privileged mode, host devices, kernel modules, or broad namespace control.
- You cannot confidently enumerate the files, services, or network destinations it must access.
- A container escape would have consequences greater than the operational cost of a separate guest kernel.
A microVM is not a substitute for least privilege. Still use a non-root account, restricted network policy, short-lived credentials, resource limits, logging, and teardown inside the guest.
A repeatable policy for coding agents
For routine code generation, make the default job offline, non-root, rootless, capability-free, seccomp-confined, read-only at the root, and limited to one workspace. Require an explicit approval to add a mount, credential, network destination, capability, device, or longer runtime. Keep production repositories and secrets in a separate environment.
For higher-risk jobs, route execution to a microVM, use a disposable snapshot, and export only reviewed artifacts. The policy should be enforced by the runner rather than left to an agent’s generated command line.
Quick Recap
Final preflight checklist
- Is the source treated as untrusted, even if a familiar model generated it?
- Is the daemon rootless and the process running under a dedicated non-root UID?
- Is Docker’s default seccomp profile enabled?
- Are all capabilities dropped, with no privileged mode and no-new-privileges enabled?
- Are mounts limited to one reviewed workspace, with no Docker socket or credential directories?
- Is networking disabled or limited to an explicit, logged allowlist?
- Are CPU, memory, PIDs, disk, and wall-clock limits set?
- Is the image digest-pinned or otherwise reviewed and integrity-checked?
- Are credentials short-lived, least-privileged, and absent when unnecessary?
- Will the container, writable layers, temporary volumes, caches, and credentials be destroyed after the run?
- Would a microVM be more appropriate because of hostility, secrets, or required privileges?
