Start with Motion Blur Off. Set camera shake, head bob, camera bob, weapon sway, camera roll, and other secondary camera movement to Off or their lowest values. Use a comfortable field of view (FOV), lower look sensitivity, disable acceleration if it causes overshoot, turn vibration off, and enable a persistent centre dot or reticle when available. For sudden scares, lower effects volume and dynamic range, enable subtitles, and look for title-specific content warnings, visual-hide controls, scene skips, or a less intense difficulty.
These changes can reduce visual and audio triggers, but they cannot guarantee that a game will feel comfortable or remove every authored jump scare. There is no universal jump-scare slider, and controls differ by game, platform, and edition.
Why horror-game cameras can make you feel sick
Many games move the viewpoint even when your body is still. Simulated camera movement can conflict with the stationary vestibular system in your inner ear, a problem described in Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 117. The guideline specifically identifies field of view, camera bobbing, motion blur, weapon sway, automatic camera-angle changes, camera shake, and camera speed as controls that should be adjustable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIn practice, discomfort may come from one effect or from several effects stacking together: a narrow FOV creates a tunnel-like view, head bob adds a walking rhythm, weapon sway shifts the foreground independently of the world, and high sensitivity makes every correction abrupt. A scripted camera lurch can be uncomfortable even when ordinary movement feels fine.

These are comfort settings, not medical treatment. If symptoms continue after you stop playing, become severe, or include unusual neurological symptoms, stop and seek appropriate medical advice. No official source establishes a percentage of players helped by any particular setting.
Use this setup order before you play
Open the game’s Accessibility, Camera, Display, or Motion Sickness menu before changing a global graphics preset. Make one change at a time and test for several minutes; changing everything at once makes it impossible to identify the trigger.
- Disable every form of blur. Set Motion Blur to Off. If separate controls exist for radial blur, per-object blur, sprint blur, depth-of-field blur, or camera-lens effects, disable those as well.
- Remove secondary camera motion. Set Camera Shake, Head Bob or Camera Bob, Weapon Sway, Camera Roll, and forced camera motion to zero or the lowest value.
- Choose a comfortable FOV or camera distance. Increase FOV gradually if the default feels like looking through a tunnel. If a wide setting produces a fish-eye sensation, step it back. In third-person games, test a farther follow distance.
- Make turning predictable. Lower look sensitivity. Disable acceleration or smoothing when either causes the reticle to overshoot your target; a slower, consistent turn is usually easier to track.
- Stop controller movement. Turn vibration off, or at least disable impact and scripted-event vibration.
- Add a stable visual reference. Enable a persistent centre dot, reticle, or other fixed marker if the game offers one.
- Reduce sudden audio changes. Lower effects volume and choose a compressed or night-mode dynamic-range option when available.
- Test, pause, and adjust. Stop at the first sign of nausea, dizziness, headache, eye strain, or disorientation. Resume only after you feel normal, then change a single control.
Recommended camera and display settings
| Setting | Starting value | Why it helps | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Motion Blur | Off | Removes artificial streaking during movement and rapid turns. | Some games hide radial, sprint, or per-object blur in separate menus. |
| Camera Shake | Off or minimum | Prevents impacts, explosions, and scripted events from moving the whole view. | Check both gameplay and accessibility menus; a toggle may not cover every event. |
| Head Bob/Camera Bob | Off or minimum | Removes the repeated vertical rhythm produced while walking or running. | Some titles label the same effect as walking sway or movement bob. |
| Weapon Sway | Off or minimum | Keeps a foreground weapon from drifting independently of the scene. | Separate aiming sway may remain under weapon or controls settings. |
| Camera Roll | Off or minimum | Prevents the horizon from tilting during movement or attacks. | Scripted sequences can still rotate the camera if the game does not expose a control. |
| Forced camera movement | Off where offered | Reduces automatic pans, pulls, and angle changes. | Many games provide no complete override for authored cinematics. |
| FOV | Adjust in small increments | A slightly wider view can reduce tunnel vision and the need for constant camera turning. | Very wide values can look fisheye-like and may themselves cause discomfort. |
| Third-person follow distance | Farther than default, if comfortable | Shows more of the character and surroundings, reducing an overly close camera. | A distant camera can make aiming or navigating harder. |
| Look sensitivity | Lower than default | Slows rapid visual jumps and makes corrections easier to predict. | Too low can require large physical stick or mouse movements. |
| Acceleration and smoothing | Off when they cause overshoot | Removes delayed or speed-dependent turning. | Some players prefer mild smoothing; test rather than assuming zero is best. |
| Centre dot or reticle | On and persistent | Provides a fixed reference against which the moving scene can be judged. | Not every horror game allows an always-visible marker. |
Finding an FOV that does not trigger symptoms
There is no single best FOV number for every player or every display. Start from the game’s default and make a small change, then walk through a familiar area for several minutes. If the image feels constricted and you are constantly turning to see nearby objects, increase FOV one step. If straight lines at the edge of the screen bend visually, or the scene feels stretched, reduce it.
First-person games make FOV changes especially noticeable because the camera is your entire viewpoint. A modest increase can reduce tunnel vision, but an extreme increase magnifies peripheral motion. In third-person games, camera distance can matter more than FOV: move the follow camera back gradually, then verify that aiming and interaction prompts remain readable.
Some games use horizontal FOV while others use vertical FOV, and console and PC versions may expose different ranges. Treat a value as a starting point for that title and platform, not a universal prescription.

Reducing the intensity of jump scares
A jump scare combines authored timing, a sudden visual change, and often a sharp audio spike. Camera adjustments address only the visual-motion part. Use the following controls for the other components.
Control the sound spike
- Lower Effects volume first, because stingers, impacts, and creature attacks are commonly routed there.
- Reduce Music or Ambience if a rising mix keeps you in a state of constant anticipation.
- Lower Master volume if individual sliders are unavailable.
- Choose Night Mode, compressed dynamic range, or a similar option when the game provides one. This reduces the gap between quiet exploration and loud peaks.
- Turn controller vibration off, particularly for impact and scripted-event feedback.
Do not assume that lowering dialogue alone will reduce a scare; the sharpest transient is usually an effects or master-channel event.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Keep information visible without making the mix louder
Enable subtitles and speaker names. They make dialogue, warnings, and nearby events understandable at a lower volume. If subtitle size, background opacity, or colour controls exist, increase readability so you do not need to raise the audio to catch a line.
Look for content controls specific to the game
Search Accessibility, Content Warnings, Gameplay, and Extras menus for visual filters, hide-visual options, reduced-intensity modes, or scene skips. These are not standard features. For example, EA’s official Dead Space information describes a content-warning feature that can identify sensitive material and hide selected visuals with a blur while allowing the audio to continue. That is a concrete title feature, not a guarantee for other horror games.
When a control hides an image but leaves audio intact, combine it with lower effects volume or a compressed mix if the sound remains distressing.

Difficulty, lighting, and pauses can lower fear without changing the story
If the anticipation of dying is what makes every room feel overwhelming, select an easier or more forgiving mode. A lower difficulty can reduce repeated high-pressure encounters and give you time to learn the environment. It does not necessarily remove scripted scares, so pair it with the camera and audio changes above.

Xbox Wire’s official guidance for Resident Evil Requiem recommends playing in daylight or with room lights on, lowering volume, pausing when overwhelmed, and choosing Casual mode. A pause is a useful reset: stop the game at the first sign of escalating symptoms rather than trying to finish a sequence while disoriented.
Some titles allow unrestricted pausing; others pause only in menus or safe areas. Check this before starting a long section, and use manual saves where the game permits so you can stop without losing substantial progress.
What documented games offer
Resident Evil 4
Capcom provides a Motion Sickness accessibility preset for Resident Evil 4, along with additional camera suggestions. Start with that preset, then inspect individual camera, blur, and shake controls because a preset may not match your tolerance for every effect. Confirm the options on your platform and edition; menu labels can differ between releases.
The Last of Us Part II
The official accessibility page states that simulated 3D movement can cause motion sickness for some players. It documents controls for camera shake, motion blur, camera follow distance, and field of view. A practical sequence is to disable shake and blur, move the follow camera farther away, and adjust FOV in small steps while testing a familiar area.

Resident Evil Resistance
Capcom’s manual documents camera speed, FOV, a camera-shake toggle, vibration, audio levels, dynamic range, subtitles, and brightness. This combination lets you address both motion and scare intensity: slow camera speed, disable shake and vibration, choose a comfortable FOV, reduce effects or dynamic range, and enable subtitles. Brightness changes can make dark spaces easier to read, but raising it does not remove an authored scare.
Dead Space
EA documents content warnings that can inform you about sensitive material and hide selected visuals with a blur while the audio continues. Check the warning and visual-hide choices before beginning a chapter, then adjust audio separately if the continuing sound is still a trigger.
Resident Evil Requiem
The official Xbox Wire guide recommends daylight or room lighting, lower volume, pausing when overwhelmed, and Casual mode. These are intensity-management measures rather than camera fixes, so use the game’s own motion controls as well if movement is the source of nausea.
A practical decision table for any horror game
Before buying or starting a title, use its settings list or manual to check these capability areas. A missing control is meaningful information when you are sensitive to motion.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Capability | Questions to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Camera motion | Are blur, shake, bob, sway, roll, automatic angles, and acceleration independently adjustable? | One global toggle may leave a specific trigger active. |
| FOV and distance | Can first-person FOV be changed? Can a third-person follow camera move back? | These determine how much peripheral motion reaches your view. |
| Stable reference | Is there a persistent centre dot, reticle, or other fixed marker? | A fixed point can make moving scenes easier to interpret. |
| Audio and vibration | Are effects, ambience, music, master volume, dynamic range, subtitles, and vibration separate? | Separate controls let you soften a scare without losing dialogue. |
| Content controls | Are there warnings, visual-hide filters, reduced-intensity options, or scene skips? | These may address disturbing imagery that camera settings cannot. |
| Difficulty and pausing | Is there a forgiving mode, reliable pause, and flexible saving? | Lower pressure and easy breaks help when anticipation is the trigger. |
| Platform differences | Does the PC, console, or cloud version expose the same menu and range? | Options documented for one edition may not appear in another. |
Troubleshooting by symptom
Nausea starts while walking
Stop, rest, and then disable head bob, camera bob, weapon sway, and motion blur. Lower look sensitivity and test a modest FOV change. If the problem appears only during sprinting, look for a separate sprint-blur or sprint-camera setting.

The room feels fine but combat causes dizziness
Disable camera shake and roll, turn vibration off, and reduce sensitivity or acceleration. Explosions and melee impacts often use separate shake events, so test a fight rather than only an empty hallway.
You feel sick during cutscenes or automatic transitions
Look for forced camera-motion, cinematic-shake, or camera-follow options. If none exists, pause before the sequence, lower brightness and volume as needed, and use any scene-skip or visual-hide feature. A game may not allow the player to override every authored camera move.
Jump scares are tolerable visually but painful acoustically
Keep the visual settings that feel comfortable, then lower Effects and Master volume, reduce dynamic range, and enable subtitles. Turn vibration off; a controller pulse can reinforce the same startle response as the sound.
Wide FOV makes symptoms worse
Return toward the default in small steps. A wider view is not automatically better: peripheral movement and edge distortion can become the new trigger. In third person, try moving the follow camera back instead of widening FOV further.
You cannot identify the cause
Reset to a conservative profile—blur, shake, bob, sway, roll, vibration, and acceleration off; low sensitivity; subtitles on—then re-enable one option per session. Keep a short note of the setting and the symptom so a pattern becomes visible.
When to stop playing
Pause immediately when symptoms begin rather than attempting to acclimate through worsening discomfort. Sit in a stable, well-lit space, look away from the display, and resume only when you feel normal. If symptoms persist after stopping, recur unusually quickly, or are accompanied by severe headache, faintness, weakness, vision changes, or other concerning signs, seek medical advice instead of continuing to adjust game settings.
Bottom line
For the best starting profile, turn Motion Blur, camera shake, head bob, weapon sway, camera roll, forced camera motion, vibration, and problematic acceleration off; lower sensitivity; choose a moderate FOV or farther third-person camera; and enable a centre reference. Then soften effects volume and dynamic range, use subtitles, and check for the game’s own warnings or visual-hide controls. Test one change at a time, pause at the first symptom, and remember that no setting can universally remove jump scares.
