Start with Recommended in Fire Emblem Shadows’ Graphic Settings. If your phone struggles to keep play responsive or becomes uncomfortably warm, try Lower Quality and compare both settings during a normal session. Nintendo lists three options, but does not publish device-specific benchmarks or guarantee a particular frame rate, temperature, or battery-life change for any of them.
The practical goal is to find an option that feels comfortable on your own phone—not to chase a setting that is supposedly best for every device. Check that the app is up to date before judging whether a choice works: Nintendo documented a graphics-setting defect that could prevent the selected quality level from taking effect, and said it was fixed in version 1.1.1.
Where to change the graphics setting
- Open the game’s home screen.
- Tap the menu in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Settings > Graphic Settings.
- Select Recommended, Lower Quality, or Higher Quality.
Nintendo documents these three choices and this menu path. The name Recommended makes it the sensible starting point, but Nintendo does not state the technical target behind that label or identify a setting that is best for every phone.

Which graphics option should you use?

To compare options fairly, change one setting at a time and play for a similar amount of time in ordinary conditions. Pay attention to the image, whether controls and animations feel responsive, and whether the phone becomes warmer than is comfortable. You can also observe your own battery use, but Nintendo’s official materials do not quantify how much any setting affects it. A result on one device is not a guarantee for another.
A simple way to compare settings
- Update first. Install the latest version offered for your phone before comparing settings. This matters because Nintendo said a graphics-setting defect was resolved in version 1.1.1.
- Start at Recommended. Use the same sort of ordinary play session you would normally have. Notice whether the picture is clear enough for you, whether play feels responsive, and whether the phone becomes uncomfortably warm.
- Change only the graphics option. If you have a specific reason to test another choice, select Lower Quality for performance or warmth concerns, or Higher Quality if visual quality is your priority and the phone is comfortable.
- Compare similar sessions. Keep the session length and general conditions as similar as practical. If you change several things at once, it will be harder to tell whether the graphics choice made a difference.
- Keep the setting that suits you. If an option does not appear to help, or the trade-off is not worth it to you, return to the one you prefer. There is no official promise that one option will improve every device’s performance.
This is a practical comparison method, not a Nintendo benchmark procedure. It can help you make a personal choice without assuming that a particular phone model, battery percentage, frame rate, or temperature will behave the same as another player’s device.
What to watch for
- Visual quality: Decide whether the image looks satisfactory to you during normal play. Nintendo does not publish a technical description of what changes between the three options.
- Responsiveness: Notice whether the game feels sluggish or whether interactions seem delayed. Do not assume every delay is caused by graphics quality: Nintendo also notes that an unstable connection may cause lag or loading delays.
- Warmth: Pay attention to whether the device becomes warmer than is comfortable. Nintendo says a phone may become warm to the touch during gameplay, but gives no temperature threshold and does not say that Lower Quality will always prevent it.
- Battery use: You can observe what happens on your own phone, but there are no published battery comparisons for these choices. Do not treat a short personal comparison as a guaranteed estimate for later sessions.
Update the game before diagnosing graphics problems
Nintendo reported that a graphics-setting defect was fixed in version 1.1.1. Before the fix, the selected image-quality level could fail to take effect, causing the game to render at significantly higher quality than selected and increasing processing load. Nintendo’s notice is dated October 31, 2025; later versions may now be available, so install the latest release offered for your device rather than stopping at 1.1.1.

- Check the app version shown at the upper-right of the title screen.
- If an update is available, install it through your device’s app store.
- Return to Graphic Settings and select your preferred option.
- Play normally and assess the result before changing other settings.
If the setting seems to have no effect, confirming that the game is current is more useful than repeatedly switching options: the documented defect could prevent the selected quality level from taking effect. Nintendo’s October 31, 2025 update notice states, “The ‘Graphic Setting’ issue has been resolved in ver 1.1.1.” That notice describes the fix for the documented issue; it does not establish a universal best setting or a performance guarantee for later versions.
Fix slow loading, lag, or freezing
Nintendo’s official support guidance titled “Slow Loading / Laggy Performance / App Freezing” recommends working through these checks. Keep the order, and do not uninstall the game as part of the restart step. The checks address different possible causes, so a graphics change alone may not resolve a connection, storage, software, or background-app problem.

- Check device support. Confirm that your phone appears on Nintendo’s supported-device list for its platform. If it is not listed, do not assume a graphics setting can make the device supported.
- Check free storage. Nintendo recommends keeping at least 2 GB free. This is support guidance, not a measured requirement for the game’s install size. Check the phone’s available storage rather than interpreting the figure as the amount of space the app itself occupies.
- Restart the app and phone. Fully close the game, reopen it, and restart the device. Do not delete or uninstall the app as part of this check; Nintendo’s restart guidance does not ask players to remove the game.
- Close unused apps. Close apps that are not in use. Nintendo notes that other apps using memory or processing resources may interfere with play. This is a check to try, not evidence that a particular background app is necessarily the cause.
- Update the game. Check for the latest version in the App Store or Google Play. The latest available release may be newer than version 1.1.1, which fixed the graphics-setting issue Nintendo documented in 2025.
- Check the connection. Use a stable Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection. Nintendo notes that an unstable connection can cause lag or loading delays, so compare after establishing a stable connection rather than assuming all sluggishness is a graphics issue.
- Check for an operating-system update. See whether an update is available for your device. Nintendo includes this in its troubleshooting sequence; the support guidance does not specify a particular OS version as a fix for all performance issues.
- Clear asset data if you can reach the home screen. Open the menu, choose Support, FAQ, etc. > Clear Asset Data, and confirm. This step requires access to the game’s home screen. If the game cannot open that far, continue with checks you can perform outside the game and include the launch problem in a report if it persists.
After each check, try the game again before moving on when practical. That makes it easier to notice whether a step changed the problem. If the issue remains, continue through Nintendo’s sequence rather than repeatedly toggling the graphics option. The guidance does not promise that every step will fix every case; it provides checks for common causes Nintendo identifies.
What to include in a bug-investigation report
If the problem remains after the checks, Nintendo asks players to submit a bug-investigation report. Include as much of the following as you can:
- Phone or device model.
- Operating system and OS version.
- Fire Emblem Shadows app version.
- Available storage.
- The error message, if one appeared.
- The time the issue occurred.
Be specific about what happened—for example, whether the problem was slow loading, lag, freezing, a crash, or failure to launch. This description helps make the report useful alongside the device and software details. If the game will not launch, provide information you can obtain from the phone’s settings and the app store; if it opens, check the title screen for the app version.
If your phone gets warm
Nintendo says a device may become warm to the touch during gameplay. Its support guidance gives no temperature threshold and does not say that a particular graphics option will always prevent warmth. If the phone is warmer than you find comfortable, try Lower Quality as a personal troubleshooting comparison, not as a guaranteed cooling fix. Compare during ordinary play, and do not infer that an option has a measured temperature effect.
Nintendo’s suggested checks for warmth include restarting the app and device, closing other apps or unnecessary browser tabs, clearing asset data from the support menu, updating the app, and checking the network and OS. The same checks can be useful when warmth occurs alongside lag or loading delays. If you cannot reach the home screen, you cannot use the in-game Clear Asset Data path; try the other applicable steps instead.

If you compare Lower Quality with another option, look at the overall experience: whether play feels responsive, whether the image is acceptable to you, and whether warmth remains uncomfortable. A graphics choice is only one thing to test. Nintendo does not publish a phone-specific setting recommendation or a temperature cutoff, and its guidance does not claim that changing quality replaces app updates, restarts, or other troubleshooting.
If the game crashes or will not launch
For a crash or launch failure, Nintendo additionally advises checking supported-device status and free storage, closing background apps, and updating both the game and operating system. It also suggests temporarily disabling security apps or power-saving mode to see whether they are interfering. Treat that as a diagnostic test; restore those protections or settings afterward if they are not the cause. Restart without deleting the game.
These checks differ from simply choosing Lower Quality: if the game cannot launch, you cannot compare graphics options from the home-screen menu. First check what you can outside the app—such as whether the device is supported, whether storage is available, and whether app or OS updates are offered. If the game opens but crashes during play, close background apps and test again after updating. Avoid uninstalling the game as a substitute for the restart Nintendo recommends.
If the app opens but the failure continues, report it with the device, software-version, storage, error, and timing details listed above. If it will not launch, provide the information you can obtain from the device settings and app store. Include whether the issue is a crash after launch or an inability to start the app, rather than describing both simply as “lag.”
Other settings and what they do not change
Nintendo’s support index lists settings for audio volume and music, notifications, vibration, and language. These let you tailor the experience, but Nintendo’s support material does not identify them as graphics-performance controls. If your specific issue is lag, loading, freezing, or warmth, use the graphics and troubleshooting steps rather than assuming an audio, vibration, or language change will improve performance.
