For the lowest practical electricity use, set a smart inverter window AC to the highest temperature that still feels comfortable—78°F is ENERGY STAR’s typical example—then turn on Energy Saver, use low fan speed when humidity is high, and schedule a higher setpoint or shutdown when the room is empty. Efficiency also depends on the correct BTU/h capacity, a sealed and level installation, clear airflow, and a clean filter.
The settings that save the most energy
Start with Cooling mode and a setpoint of about 78°F, then adjust upward or downward only as comfort requires. ENERGY STAR’s guidance is to set the thermostat “as high as is comfortable, typically 78° F.” A lower number does not make an inverter air conditioner cool the room faster; it can simply keep the compressor running longer.
- Mode: Cooling when you need both temperature reduction and active dehumidification.
- Temperature: The highest comfortable setpoint; 78°F is a commonly cited starting point.
- Fan: Low on humid days; higher temporarily when you need to distribute cool air across the room.
- Energy Saver or Eco: On, when available.
- Schedule: Raise the setpoint or turn the unit off while the room is unoccupied.
- Night operation: Use a comfortable setpoint and a sleep schedule that gradually raises the temperature, if your model provides one.
Fan-only mode is not an alternative to cooling. It circulates room air but does not run the compressor, so it does not provide compressor cooling or the same dehumidification.
Why inverter operation changes the best settings
A conventional room air conditioner generally switches its compressor between full capacity and off. A variable-speed, or inverter, compressor can continuously vary motor speed to regulate temperature. That lets the unit maintain a target with less frequent abrupt starts and stops, provided the setpoint, capacity and installation are appropriate.

Inverter technology is not a reason to set the thermostat unusually low. The practical strategy remains a moderate setpoint and enough operating time to remove heat and moisture. An oversized unit may cool the air quickly but shut off before removing enough humidity, leaving the room clammy while using more energy than a correctly sized unit.
Set the temperature for comfort, not the lowest possible number
Use 78°F as a starting point
Set the thermostat to 78°F when you are in the room, then change it in small increments if the space still feels too warm or too cool. The relevant target is the highest setting that keeps occupants comfortable, not a universal number that fits every person, building or climate.
Raise the setpoint when the room is empty
A smart window AC can usually be scheduled to use a higher setpoint during work, school or sleeping hours, or to switch off when nobody is home. Raising the target reduces the time the compressor must run. If the app offers energy-use feedback, use it to identify schedules that leave the unit operating unnecessarily.

Pre-cooling an occupied room can be useful before people arrive, but running the unit for hours in an empty room wastes that cooling. A schedule that starts shortly before occupancy is generally more efficient than maintaining the daytime setpoint all day.
Do not confuse a lower setpoint with faster cooling
If the room is hot, lowering the thermostat far below the desired temperature does not command an inverter compressor to cool faster. It extends the time before the thermostat is satisfied. Set the desired temperature directly and allow the variable-speed system to regulate capacity.

Choose the right fan setting for humidity and air distribution
Low fan speed on humid days
ENERGY STAR advises using low fan speed on humid days. Slower air movement gives the indoor coil more opportunity to remove moisture from the air, which can make the room feel comfortable at a somewhat higher temperature.
When a higher speed helps
Use a higher fan speed temporarily when cool air is not reaching the far side of the room or when several people have just entered. Once the temperature is even, return to low or the unit’s efficient automatic setting. The best choice depends on the room layout and the model’s control logic.

Auto fan is model-dependent
“Auto” does not have one universal behavior. Some units vary fan speed with cooling demand; others use a different algorithm. On a damp day, select low manually if the automatic setting leaves the room humid. Follow the owner’s manual for the exact fan behavior of your unit.
Use Energy Saver, Eco and Sleep modes deliberately
Energy Saver reduces fan runtime
ENERGY STAR’s room-air-conditioner criteria define Energy Saver operation as limiting fan operation when the compressor turns off. That avoids running the indoor fan continuously after active cooling has stopped. The same criteria include a filter reminder for connected room air conditioners.
Enable Energy Saver when you want lower fan electricity use and do not need continuous air circulation. Exact labels and timing differ by manufacturer, so verify what the mode does in your manual. Some models may pause the fan completely; others may cycle it periodically.

Sleep mode is a schedule, not a universal standard
A sleep mode commonly raises the setpoint gradually or changes fan behavior overnight, but manufacturers do not implement it identically. Check the product instructions to learn how much the temperature changes, when the change occurs and whether the fan continues to run.
Eco is not automatically the same as Energy Saver
“Eco,” “Energy Saver” and similar names are marketing labels rather than a single industry-wide operating specification. Compare the mode description in the manual: the useful detail is whether it changes compressor capacity, fan runtime, temperature targets or scheduling.
Build a smart schedule for home, away and nighttime use
- Open the manufacturer’s AC app and select the connected unit. The exact menu names vary by product.
- Create an occupied period. Set the highest comfortable temperature for the hours people normally use the room.
- Create an away period. Raise the setpoint substantially or schedule the unit to turn off when the room is empty.
- Add a return time. Start cooling shortly before occupants need the room rather than maintaining the occupied setting all day.
- Set a night period. Use a comfortable temperature or the model’s sleep function, and choose a gradual increase if that option is available.
- Review energy feedback. If the app reports energy use, look for long periods of operation while the room was unoccupied and adjust the schedule.
Connected room air conditioners can be switched off remotely, scheduled for temperature changes and used to provide energy-use feedback. A remote command is useful after an unexpected schedule change, but it should not replace a predictable timetable.
Installation details that determine real-world efficiency
Seal the window opening
Use the supplied insulation panels and weather-sealing materials around the unit. ENERGY STAR notes that an improperly installed window AC can leak as much air as a 6-square-inch hole. Leakage allows conditioned air out and warm outdoor air in, forcing longer operation.
Keep the unit level
Install the air conditioner level so condensate can drain as designed. A unit that is not level may drain poorly, which can affect operation and create water-management problems.

Keep heat sources away from the thermostat
Do not place a lamp, television or other heat-producing device near the AC’s thermostat sensor. The sensor may read an artificially warm area and keep cooling longer than the rest of the room requires.
Keep the airflow path open
Do not block the front discharge, return-air intake or exterior condenser side with furniture, curtains or objects. The unit needs a clear path to move room air across the indoor coil and reject heat outdoors.
Size the AC by room area and conditions
Capacity is expressed in BTU/h. ENERGY STAR’s sizing guidance provides starting ranges, then calls for adjustments for shade, direct sun, the number of occupants and heat from kitchens or appliances.
| Room area | Example capacity |
|---|---|
| 250–300 square feet | 7,000 BTU/h |
| 450–550 square feet | 12,000 BTU/h |
These are examples rather than a complete sizing chart. A sunny room, a kitchen or a space with more occupants may need an adjustment, while a shaded room may need less. Follow the full sizing guidance for your conditions and the unit’s installation instructions.

Why oversizing hurts comfort
An oversized AC can lower the temperature quickly and then shut down before it has removed enough moisture. The result is a cool but humid room, with more cycling and potentially higher energy use. Correct capacity allows the inverter compressor to run at a lower output for longer, steadier periods.

Keep the filter and coils working efficiently
Check the filter regularly
Inspect the filter on the schedule in the owner’s manual and clean it whenever it is visibly dirty. ENERGY STAR’s connected criteria include a filter reminder, and the U.S. Department of Energy explains that a clogged filter restricts airflow, decreases efficiency and reduces the unit’s ability to cool effectively.
Restore airflow after cleaning
Turn the unit off before removing the filter. Clean or replace it according to the manufacturer’s instructions, let a washable filter dry completely, and reinstall it securely. A filter that is wet, damaged or fitted incorrectly can restrict airflow just as a dirty one does.
Use reminders as prompts, not guarantees
A reminder is based on elapsed operation or a programmed interval and may not reflect dust, smoke, pets or construction in your room. Inspect the filter even when no notification has appeared, especially if airflow has weakened or the unit is running longer than usual.

The United States Department of Energy reported in 2023 that a typical new room air conditioner uses 39% less energy than its 1990 counterpart. The same DOE rulemaking estimated about $1.5 billion in annual consumer savings from the 2023 standards. Those figures describe broad equipment improvements, not a guaranteed saving from one thermostat or app setting on every inverter model.
DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) guidance, updated in December 2024, gives a best-available example for a 12,000-BTU/h room AC: CEER 15.4, annual use of 584 kWh, annual energy cost of $64 and lifetime energy cost of $458. These are example assumptions for that capacity and are not a promise for every inverter window AC or every electricity rate.
| Figure | What it represents |
|---|---|
| 39% less energy | Typical new room AC versus a 1990 counterpart, according to DOE in 2023 |
| About $1.5 billion per year | DOE’s estimated consumer savings from 2023 room-AC standards |
| CEER 15.4 | Best-available 12,000-BTU/h example in FEMP guidance updated December 2024 |
| 584 kWh per year | Annual-use assumption for that FEMP example |
| $64 per year | Annual energy-cost assumption for that FEMP example |
| $458 lifetime | Lifetime energy-cost assumption for that FEMP example |
No single published percentage applies to every inverter window AC at a particular thermostat setting. Your result depends on capacity, weather, insulation, humidity, electricity rates, schedule and installation quality.

Troubleshoot common efficiency and comfort problems
The room is cool but feels damp
- Confirm that the unit is in Cooling mode, not fan-only mode.
- Set the fan to low during humid weather.
- Check whether the unit is oversized for the room; rapid cooling followed by early shutdown can reduce dehumidification.
- Inspect the filter and verify that airflow is not blocked.
The AC runs constantly
- Check for gaps around the window kit and reseal them with the supplied materials.
- Make sure the thermostat is not next to a lamp, television or another heat source.
- Inspect the filter and intake for restriction.
- Review the room’s sun exposure, occupants and heat-producing appliances against the unit’s BTU/h capacity.
- Confirm that the schedule has not been set to an unnecessarily low temperature.
Cooling is uneven across the room
- Use a higher fan speed temporarily to distribute air.
- Move furniture or curtains away from the supply and return vents.
- Once the room is mixed, return to low fan speed if humidity is the priority.
Water is not draining properly
- Verify that the window unit is level.
- Check the installation instructions for the correct drainage arrangement.
- Turn the unit off if water is entering the room and correct the installation before resuming operation.
The app schedule does not match the room’s use
- Check the device’s time zone and clock settings.
- Review every occupied, away and sleep period for overlapping or conflicting rules.
- Use remote shutoff when plans change, then revise the recurring schedule so the error does not repeat.
A practical daily routine
- Before cooling, confirm that the window panels are sealed and the vents are unobstructed.
- Set Cooling mode to the highest comfortable temperature, beginning around 78°F.
- Select low fan speed if the weather is humid; use higher speed only while distributing air.
- Enable Energy Saver after confirming its behavior in the manual.
- Let the smart schedule raise the setpoint or turn the unit off when the room is empty.
- Use the app’s energy feedback, if available, to refine start times and away periods.
- Inspect the filter regularly and clean it when dirty or when the unit’s reminder appears.
- Recheck sizing and sealing if the unit runs for long periods, cools unevenly or leaves the room damp.
