Start with HD or HD 256 for books, documents, and detailed still images; use Regal when ghosting is distracting; choose Normal for mixed reading and scrolling; and reserve Extreme for situations where speed matters more than fine detail. These labels are not standardized. Their appearance and behavior depend on the device, firmware, reading app, lighting, and the automatic full-refresh interval.

For color adjustment, set brightness for the room first, raise contrast only until text separates cleanly from the background, then increase saturation gradually if illustrations look dull. There is no universal “best” percentage: manufacturer manuals describe the trade-offs, but do not establish a colorimeter-calibrated setting that works on every color E Ink panel.

Quick recommendations by what you are viewing

Content Starting refresh mode Contrast and color approach Reason
Novels, articles, PDFs, and office text HD or HD 256 Moderate contrast or dark enhancement; leave saturation near its default Preserves character edges and keeps the page background from looking mottled
Comics, illustrated books, and diagrams Regal, or HD with image smoothing when available Increase vividness/saturation slowly; stop raising contrast once lettering is clear Balances smoother color transitions with reduced ghosting
Web pages and rapid scrolling Normal, then Extreme if necessary Accept some loss of detail and schedule periodic full refreshes Favors motion speed over a pristine static image
Photos and detailed still images HD, HD 256, or Regal Use image smoothing where supported; adjust brightness before pushing saturation Reduces clipped colors and uneven gradients

Apply these as starting points, not calibration targets. The GuoYue V6 Color manual and BOOX EinkWise documentation explain intended behavior, while the BOOX Nova3 Color article documents the practical effects of ghosting and deep refresh. They do not provide a universal slider value or cross-device benchmark.

What the refresh modes actually change

A color E Ink screen changes pigment particles rather than continuously driving illuminated pixels. Moving those particles takes time, and some previous pigment remains visible after a page turn. A refresh mode tells the controller how aggressively to update the panel. Faster modes reduce waiting during scrolling but usually sacrifice edge detail or leave more residue; quality-oriented modes take longer and clear the image more thoroughly.

HD 256

The GuoYue V6 Color manual describes HD 256 as the clearest choice for images and text. It is the best first setting for a fixed page containing small type, fine line art, or a detailed diagram. Expect slower page turns than Normal or Extreme and occasional flashes when the device performs a deeper update.

HD

HD is described as clear for general reading. Use it for novels, news articles, and ordinary documents when HD 256 feels unnecessarily slow. On BOOX devices, image smoothing is available in HD and Regal modes for image-heavy content, although the exact switch can vary by model and firmware.

Normal

Normal is slightly faster than HD and is a practical compromise for mixed reading. It suits pages that alternate between text and modest illustrations, or a browser where you scroll often but still want recognizable images. If trails build up, keep Normal and trigger a full refresh rather than immediately moving to Extreme.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Extreme

Extreme prioritizes speed. The GuoYue manual warns that some detail is lost, so use it for rapid web scrolling, animated interfaces, or a quick search rather than close reading. Fine strokes can soften, color blocks can merge, and a later full refresh may be needed to remove residue.

Regal

Regal is the least-ghosting option in the GuoYue V6 Color manual and is intended to produce clearer text and images when trails are the main problem. It can be a better choice than HD for a page that is otherwise detailed but has accumulated shadows from repeated updates. The trade-off is slower interaction and more visible refresh flashes.

How to choose a mode in practice

  1. Identify the dominant task. If you read still text, start with HD or HD 256. If you scroll, start with Normal. If ghosting prevents you from reading, start with Regal.
  2. Watch a representative page for several turns. Use the same page you normally read, including its smallest text and typical images. A blank settings screen cannot reveal the artifacts that matter in real use.
  3. Change one variable at a time. Compare HD with Regal before changing contrast or saturation. Otherwise you cannot tell whether an improvement came from the refresh algorithm or the color controls.
  4. Keep a speed-versus-cleanliness decision. Stay in HD or Regal when legibility is more important than a fraction of a second. Move to Normal or Extreme only when waiting or scrolling is genuinely disruptive.
  5. Set the full-refresh interval after selecting the mode. If your device offers a refresh after a chosen number of operations, lower the number when residue is distracting and raise it when flashes interrupt you more than ghosting does.

Contrast, saturation, and brightness are different controls

Color E Ink controls are often grouped together even though they affect separate properties. BOOX calls them Color Contrast, Color Saturation, and Color Brightness. Its documentation describes contrast as dark-color enhancement, saturation as vividness or vibration enhancement, and brightness as the overall color-brightness control. GuoYue/Bigme documentation similarly lists Dark Enhancement, Vivid Enhancement, Color Brightness, and a third-party-app contrast setting.

1. Set brightness for the environment

Brightness should compensate for the room and front-light level, not compensate for weak text. In a dim room, increase brightness only enough to make color areas distinguishable. In bright ambient light, reduce front-light output if the page looks washed out. Excessive brightness can make pale backgrounds appear more reflective without adding useful color information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Raise contrast until text separates

Increase dark enhancement in small increments while looking at the thinnest letters and punctuation. Stop as soon as text has a clear boundary against the page. Too much contrast can crush lighter parts of illustrations, make gradients look blotchy, and turn colored background areas into heavy gray patches.

3. Add saturation only for muted art

Use vividness or saturation when a comic, map, or chart is difficult to distinguish because its colors are subdued. Increase it gradually. Saturation cannot create colors the panel does not physically reproduce; it can only push available pigments toward stronger values, which may clip subtle highlights and skin tones.

4. Recheck after changing the refresh mode

Different modes can alter perceived edge sharpness and color density. Revisit contrast and saturation after switching between HD, Normal, Extreme, and Regal rather than assuming one set of values will look identical in every mode.

Reducing ghosting without making reading unpleasant

Ghosting is residual imagery from earlier updates. It is particularly noticeable on color E Ink because color transitions are slower and the panel must move more pigment combinations. BOOX states that ghosting can be severe on color E Ink because of the technology’s limitations and added a deep-refresh mode to NeoReader for this reason.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the least aggressive change first

  • Switch from Extreme to Normal if speed is no longer essential.
  • Switch from Normal to HD or Regal when residual text remains across several pages.
  • Run a manual full or deep refresh when trails remain after changing modes.
  • Reduce the automatic full-refresh interval if the same artifacts return after a predictable number of operations.

A full refresh clears more residue but normally produces a visible flash and pauses interaction. Frequent clears improve cleanliness at the cost of interruptions. Choose the interval according to your tolerance: a reader who turns pages slowly can use fewer automatic clears, while rapid scrolling generally benefits from more frequent resets.

When a full refresh is not enough

If a manual deep refresh leaves the same dark bands in the same physical locations, check whether the artifact is actually panel damage, a protective film, or a front-light reflection. Test a plain white page and a dark page in the same lighting. If marks do not change with content or refreshes, software settings are unlikely to be the cause.

BOOX settings and feature limits

BOOX’s official EinkWise documentation describes an interface for switching refresh modes and adjusting color mode, layout, and contrast. On supported models, image smoothing is offered in HD and Regal for image-heavy content. High Contrast Mode is designed to sharpen app displays, but it does not work with HD mode and is available only on some models.

Practical BOOX workflow

  1. Open the app or document that you want to optimize.
  2. Open the device’s EinkWise or refresh settings panel. The exact gesture and menu label depend on the model and firmware.
  3. Select HD or Regal when viewing a still image, and enable image smoothing if the option is shown.
  4. Select Normal for mixed pages or scrolling; test Extreme only if the interaction still feels too slow.
  5. Open Display Control and adjust Color Brightness, then Color Contrast, then Color Saturation in that order.
  6. Use High Contrast Mode only when your model offers it and you are in an app that benefits from sharper rendering. Do not expect it to work while HD is selected.
  7. In NeoReader, use deep refresh when accumulated trails interfere with reading, then set an automatic refresh interval that does not interrupt you excessively.

Because labels and availability change, record the exact BOOX model, firmware version, reading app, and lighting conditions when you save a preferred setup.

GuoYue and Bigme-style controls

The GuoYue V6 Color manual provides the clearest description of the five named modes: HD 256 for the highest stated clarity, HD for clear general reading, Normal for a modest speed increase, Extreme for maximum speed with some detail loss, and Regal for the least ghosting. It also exposes a full-refresh frequency based on a selected number of operations.

Its display controls include Dark Enhancement, Vivid Enhancement, Color Brightness, and a third-party-app Contrast Setting. Dark Enhancement is the appropriate first adjustment for weak text. Vivid Enhancement is intended for muted illustrations. Third-party apps may apply their own contrast processing, so a setting that looks correct in the built-in reader may look too strong in another app.

Why color may look washed out

Front-light and viewing conditions

Color E Ink is reflective. A front light, room color, and viewing angle can change perceived saturation more than a small slider adjustment. Compare settings under the lighting in which you actually read, and keep the panel at a consistent angle.

Over-bright backgrounds

Too much brightness can reduce perceived color separation by making the background dominate. Lower brightness before increasing saturation.

Insufficient vivid enhancement

If the page is evenly lit but illustrations remain muted, raise saturation or vivid enhancement in small steps. Do not use contrast as a substitute: dark enhancement mainly affects separation of dark tones and can damage color gradients.

Mode-specific rendering

Fast modes can simplify or soften image information. Compare the same still image in Extreme and HD before concluding that the panel’s color is weak.

Source-image limitations

A low-quality scan, compressed comic page, or pale original artwork cannot be restored by the display. Use the clearest available source before changing the device profile.

Figure What it describes Qualification
4,096 colors BOOX’s description of Kaleido Plus on the Nova3 Color Manufacturer figure from 2021 for that product generation
Up to three times better color rendering BOOX’s comparison of Kaleido Plus with the earlier Kaleido Manufacturer claim from 2021; not a universal benchmark across panels
120-degree viewing angle BOOX’s stated result of revised filter and ink-layer spacing Manufacturer figure from 2021
500 ms fast, 750–1,000 ms standard, 1,500 ms optimal color refresh Modes reported in E Ink technical material for Gallery 3 Technology-specific figures published in 2022; they illustrate speed/quality trade-offs
40% color-contrast improvement E Ink’s stated Gallery Plus improvement over original Gallery Manufacturer technical claim from 2022

These figures explain why a “best” mode depends on the task. A fast mode can be useful even when it is not the cleanest, while a slower mode can be worthwhile for a page that will remain on screen for several minutes.

How to compare two devices or modes fairly

Named modes are not interchangeable between manufacturers. Compare four things on the same representative content:

  1. Text and image detail: inspect small type, thin lines, and fine color gradients.
  2. Ghosting and refresh behavior: turn several pages or scroll repeatedly, then record how often a full refresh is needed.
  3. Speed: measure the practical delay before the next page is readable, not just the animation time.
  4. Color vividness and brightness: compare under identical front-light and room conditions.

Write down the device model, firmware, app, document type, lighting, and selected automatic refresh interval. The same “HD” label can behave differently across ecosystems, and an app can apply its own image processing.

A reliable setup checklist

  • Choose a representative page rather than a blank settings screen.
  • Start with HD or HD 256 for text and detailed stills.
  • Try Regal when ghosting is the limiting problem.
  • Use Normal for mixed reading and Extreme only when speed outweighs detail.
  • Set brightness for the room.
  • Raise contrast until text is clear, then stop.
  • Raise saturation only enough to restore useful illustration differences.
  • Enable image smoothing in HD or Regal when the device supports it.
  • Use a manual deep or full refresh when trails become distracting.
  • Adjust the automatic full-refresh interval to balance flashes against residue.
  • Record model, firmware, app, and lighting so the profile can be recreated after an update.

Common mistakes and fixes

Using Extreme for everything

Extreme can make scrolling feel responsive but may blur small text and simplify images. Return to Normal or HD for pages that require close reading.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Increasing saturation before brightness

Extra saturation cannot correct a poorly lit reflective display. Set brightness first, then evaluate color.

Solving ghosting with contrast

Contrast changes tone separation; it does not clear residual images. Change the refresh mode or run a full refresh instead.

Expecting High Contrast Mode in HD

On BOOX models that offer it, High Contrast Mode does not operate with HD. Switch to a compatible mode or use ordinary Color Contrast controls.

Copying another device’s slider values

Panel generation, firmware, app rendering, and ambient light all affect the result. Recreate the sequence—brightness, contrast, then saturation—on the device in front of you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

There is no single preset for every color E Ink screen. Use HD or HD 256 when detail matters, Regal when ghosting dominates, Normal for everyday mixed content, and Extreme only for speed-critical scrolling. Set brightness first, then moderate contrast, then restrained saturation; use image smoothing and full refreshes when the device supports them. Treat the named modes and published color figures as device-specific guidance, and document your model and firmware whenever you share a setting.
