The best MR. RECORDS level settings are the ones you tune in this order: choose the correct music source, match tempo and first-beat offset, set a readable scroll speed, balance music volume against gameplay cues, then add notes, obstacles and effects in short musical phrases. There is no developer-published universal value for any of those controls, so treat the numbers in your build as playtest variables rather than official defaults.
The Music Level Editor is currently available in the updated free Steam demo released on 15 October 2026. You can create or import a level, play it immediately, and export a finished record as a ZIP file for other players. The full game is planned for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2, but its release date is still listed as to be announced.
What the MR. RECORDS editor lets you control
The editor is opened from the main menu beside the story Play option. It places notes, obstacles and effects on a music timeline, while also allowing changes to assets, colors, animations and backgrounds. On PC, the editor accepts your own music, so a level can be built around a track outside the game’s included soundtrack.

- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
| Control or choice | What it changes | How to tune it | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tempo | The beat rate used to place gameplay events | Match the track before creating dense patterns | Notes gradually drift ahead of or behind the music |
| First-beat offset | Where the first beat starts on the timeline | Align the first playable beat before changing other settings | The opening note arrives early or late even when later beats seem regular |
| Scroll speed | How quickly notes and hazards travel toward the play area | Choose a speed that gives a first-time player time to read and react | High-density sections become unreadable or feel unfair |
| Music volume | The loudness of imported music | Keep the track clear without masking timing feedback and effects | Players cannot hear cues, impacts or misses |
| Notes, obstacles and effects | The actual challenge and rhythm vocabulary | Add them phrase by phrase after synchronization is reliable | Patterns become dense without a musical reason |
| Visual assets | Colors, animations and backgrounds that communicate sections | Reserve strong contrast and motion for meaningful changes | Decorative animation hides an approaching hazard |
The official editor documentation confirms the four controls but does not publish recommended numeric defaults. A setting that works for one song, controller and display may be wrong for another, so record the values that survive repeated playtests with your intended input method.
Start a level and choose its music
- From the main menu, open the record editor next to the story Play option.
- Select the first icon in the editor. Choose to create a new level from scratch or import an existing level file.
- For a custom track, choose Import Music. Enter the track’s tempo and first-beat offset, then set scroll speed and music volume. If you do not need custom audio, choose Use Game Music instead.
- Save this short setup as a working record before placing a large number of events. A short representative section is easier to diagnose than a complete song full of unsynchronised patterns.
Establish tempo and first-beat offset before adding complex gameplay. If those values change later, every pattern built against the old timing may need to be checked again.
Set tempo and first-beat offset accurately
Why tempo comes first
Tempo establishes the spacing of beats along the timeline. When it is wrong, a level can begin in sync and then drift progressively out of time. That drift is different from a single starting error: changing offset cannot repair an incorrect tempo.
Use the track’s known tempo when reliable information is available. If the tempo is uncertain, begin with the value that best matches a clearly audible repeated pulse, then test a section long enough to expose gradual drift. Do not place dense note runs until the pulse remains aligned from the beginning through the end of that section.

Use first-beat offset for the opening alignment
Offset controls where beat one lands. Play from the beginning and focus on the first intended note or obstacle. If that event arrives early or late but subsequent beats keep a consistent spacing, adjust the first-beat offset rather than changing tempo.
- Set a provisional tempo.
- Place one obvious test note on the first intended beat.
- Play from the beginning and compare the note’s arrival with the audible beat.
- Move the first-beat offset until that opening event lands on the intended beat.
- Replay a later phrase. If timing now drifts, revisit tempo; if it stays aligned, keep the offset and continue building.
Make small, deliberate changes and retest from the beginning after each change. Changing tempo and offset at the same time removes the reference point that tells you which correction worked.
Account for the player’s setup
The researched MR. RECORDS material does not publish an official latency benchmark or a universal offset compensation value. Screen, audio hardware and controller response can affect what a player perceives, so validate timing on the setup you intend to support. Treat any personal compensation as a documented creator choice, not a game-wide standard.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choose a readable scroll speed
Scroll speed determines how much visual information reaches the player and how long a reaction window feels. The editor exposes the control but gives no universal numeric recommendation. Start conservatively: a first-time player should be able to identify an approaching note or obstacle early enough to choose an input, not merely react when it reaches the hit area.

A practical tuning pass
- Build a simple phrase containing the basic note types you expect to use.
- Play it at your initial scroll speed without adding visual effects.
- Ask whether the next event can be read while the current event is being played. If not, lower the speed or reduce simultaneous events.
- Test the hardest transition separately. A speed that feels comfortable in an empty phrase may become overwhelming when obstacles and effects are layered in.
- Increase speed only when the extra challenge remains readable on a first play and does not turn anticipation into guesswork.
Scroll speed and challenge density are linked. Raising speed while also adding more events changes two difficulty variables at once, making it difficult to identify why a section fails. Tune speed on a sparse pattern first, then increase density in later passes.
Balance music volume with gameplay feedback
Music volume is an exposed control for imported tracks, but the developers publish no default value. Set it so the song remains clear without covering timing feedback, hit sounds, obstacle cues or miss effects. A track that sounds impressive in isolation can still be too loud for reliable play.
Check the mix in context
- Listen during a quiet phrase and during the busiest section; a level that is balanced at the start may become masking when effects accumulate.
- Verify that a player can distinguish the beat from decorative sounds.
- Replay with the intended controller and ordinary listening volume rather than relying only on studio headphones.
- If visual effects carry important information, reduce competing animation before simply raising music volume.
Volume is a readability setting, not a measure of the track’s quality. Keep the value that lets players hear the music and understand the game state at the same time.
Build gameplay in musical phrases
Lay down a dependable foundation
Begin with a short phrase and place a small number of notes on clear beats. Play it immediately. The editor is designed for jumping straight into a created section, so use that rapid feedback instead of authoring an entire song before checking the first idea.

Add density gradually
Once the basic alignment is reliable, add obstacles and effects in phrase-sized passes. Each new layer should have a musical or communicative purpose: a transition can introduce a different pattern, a stronger beat can support a more demanding input, and a break can give the player time to reset.
After every density increase, replay both the phrase and the transition into it. Patterns that are individually readable can become confusing when their boundaries overlap.
Use customization to communicate structure
Colors, animations and backgrounds can distinguish sections, but they should not compete with hazards. Reserve high-contrast changes for meaningful moments such as a chorus, drop or difficulty transition. Keep the play area visually stable enough that a player can identify notes and obstacles at a glance.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Use consistent colors for objects with similar gameplay meaning.
- Limit background motion during demanding patterns.
- Test contrast on the display and in the lighting conditions in which you expect people to play.
- Introduce a new visual treatment before, not at the exact instant, a difficult transition whenever possible, so players can recognize the change.
Playtest every level before sharing it
MR. RECORDS provides immediate play of created material, but the available official material does not describe an automated validator, pass/fail score or latency test. Manual replay is therefore the quality gate.

Core playtest checklist
- Play from the beginning. Confirm that the first note lands on the intended beat and that the opening scroll speed is readable.
- Play the hardest transition. Start near the section where density, obstacles or speed changes. Check that the transition is challenging rather than surprising because of missing information.
- Check tempo across the section. Listen for drift between early and late phrases. If drift appears, correct tempo before moving individual events.
- Replay with the intended controller. Steam lists “Controller recommended” for the PC version. A pattern that is comfortable on one input method may be awkward on another.
- Check reaction windows. Watch for obstacles arriving faster than the selected scroll speed allows a reasonable response.
- Check audio and effects together. Confirm that music, timing feedback, impacts and miss sounds remain distinguishable.
- Check visual contrast. Make sure backgrounds and animations do not hide notes or hazards.
- Repeat after edits. A change to tempo, offset, scroll speed or volume can alter the feel of every later phrase.
Use a two-pass test
On the first pass, concentrate on synchronization and basic readability. On the second, play without stopping and evaluate flow, fatigue and whether the difficulty rises in a way that feels intentional. A level that only works when paused and inspected is not ready to share.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot common timing and readability problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| The first note is early or late, but later notes keep their spacing | First-beat offset is wrong | Adjust offset, replay from the beginning and leave tempo unchanged |
| The level starts correctly, then drifts out of sync | Tempo does not match the track | Correct tempo, then retest the entire section before rebuilding patterns |
| Players miss events because they appear too late to read | Scroll speed is too high for the pattern | Lower scroll speed or simplify the preceding phrase |
| The track overwhelms hit and miss feedback | Music volume is too high or effects are too dense | Lower music volume and remove nonessential effects before retesting |
| Hazards disappear into the background | Insufficient contrast or excessive animation | Change colors, reduce background motion or reserve stronger contrast for the hazard |
| A section feels unfair only when fully populated | Density and speed were increased together | Return to the sparse phrase, choose a readable speed, then add events one layer at a time |
Prepare the record for sharing
When the level is ready, select the record in the editor and scroll to Share. The current documented workflow exports a ZIP file. Send that ZIP to other players so they can import and play the custom level.
- Play the final version once more after saving.
- Open the record’s Share option and export the ZIP.
- Keep the exported file unchanged while distributing it, and retain a separate editable copy for future fixes.
- Give recipients clear information about the track, intended difficulty, controller assumptions and any unusual setup requirements.
- Use the official MR. RECORDS Discord to make the level discoverable, discuss it and receive playtest feedback.
The researched documentation describes ZIP export and Discord distribution. It does not document a Steam Workshop upload button, so Workshop publishing should not be treated as a confirmed feature.

Compare two builds without an official score
No official scoring rubric is published. If you are deciding between two versions of a level, compare them on the same practical axes:
| Axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Beat alignment | Do tempo and first-beat offset keep the opening and later phrases synchronized? |
| Readability | Does scroll speed provide enough anticipation, and do visual choices keep hazards visible? |
| Challenge density | Are notes and obstacles added for a musical reason, with recovery space between demanding phrases? |
| Audio balance | Can players hear the track while still distinguishing effects and timing feedback? |
| Sharing readiness | Did the record export successfully as a ZIP, and can another player understand how to use it? |
These criteria help you make a consistent editorial decision without implying that the game has an automated grade.
