There is no source-backed universal best preset for AMD FSR 4 on a handheld gaming PC. AMD now calls its machine-learning upscaling technology FSR Upscaling, and its documented compatibility information covers selected Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 graphics products—not handheld APUs generally. If a game exposes the feature on your exact device, choose a preset in the game’s graphics menu based on your frame-rate target and image-quality preference. First confirm that your handheld and game actually support it.
Start with the compatibility check, not the preset
The words “FSR 4” in a guide or game menu do not by themselves mean that the feature is supported on every handheld PC. AMD’s current naming calls the machine-learning upscaler FSR Upscaling; some game menus may still label it FSR 4. AMD also uses “FSR Redstone” for a broader suite of features, so the names are not interchangeable shorthand for a single setting.
AMD’s compatibility information lists selected Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 graphics products for ML-based FSR Upscaling. GPUOpen’s documented SDK path specifies a discrete RX 9000 or RX 7000 GPU; on other hardware, it says the path automatically selects FSR 3.1.5. Neither statement establishes general official support for handheld APUs. A handheld may have AMD graphics and still not meet the documented requirements for this specific feature.
Check four details before adjusting anything:
- Handheld model and graphics hardware: identify the exact device and its APU or GPU, rather than relying on “AMD-powered” as a compatibility check.
- Operating system and supported software: use the driver and control software path specified by the device maker.
- Game and integration: determine whether that title includes FSR Upscaling natively or offers an eligible integration path.
- Your target: decide whether you are prioritizing a particular frame rate, image quality, or a balance of the two at the handheld’s display resolution.
These checks matter because a visible FSR option, a driver-level feature, and official support for the handheld are separate things.

What the compatibility information does—and does not—tell you
The RX 7000 and RX 9000 references are not a blanket statement that every product in those families, every game, or every device carrying AMD graphics can use the ML-based feature in the same way. AMD describes selected graphics products, while GPUOpen describes a specific SDK route and the fallback behavior it documents. A handheld APU is not automatically covered simply because it uses Radeon graphics. Check the exact model and the specific game path rather than extrapolating from a desktop GPU list.
Likewise, a menu label alone may not tell you which implementation is active. AMD says some supported games expose native ML-based FSR Upscaling, and some titles already integrated with FSR 3.1 or later can be upgraded through AMD Software. GPUOpen’s note that other hardware automatically selects FSR 3.1.5 applies to its documented SDK path; it should not be read as proof that every game on every unsupported handheld will offer that fallback. Confirm the behavior for the actual title and device.
For a useful compatibility check, write down the handheld’s full model name, the game title, the operating system, and the driver or software version recommended by its manufacturer. Then compare those details with the device maker’s support information and the game’s own graphics menu or documentation. If official information does not identify the device or path, treat support as unconfirmed rather than assuming a setting will work because another AMD device offers it.

How to choose an FSR preset when the game offers it
AMD describes selecting an in-game FSR quality preset from a supported game’s graphics or video menu. The sources do not establish that Quality, Balanced, or Performance is optimal across handhelds, games, resolutions, or frame-rate targets. Treat the menu as a set of choices to evaluate on your own device—not as a setting with one correct answer for all handheld PCs.
- Open the game’s graphics or video settings. Find the upscaling option and note the name or version shown. If there is no FSR entry, do not assume an FSR 4 setting is available just because the handheld uses AMD hardware.
- Choose an in-game preset as a starting point. Select one of the options the game actually provides. The available labels and controls can differ by title; do not look for a universal handheld control panel or assume every game exposes the same choices.
- Play the same demanding scene for each option. Compare how the image looks and whether the game reaches your own frame-rate goal. Keep the game, scene, display resolution, and other graphics settings unchanged while comparing, so you can judge the preset rather than a bundle of simultaneous changes.
- Keep the option that suits your priorities. If the image is not acceptable, try another exposed preset or disable upscaling. If the game still misses your target, the preset alone may not solve the problem; adjust other graphics settings separately and compare again.
This is a practical comparison process, not a measured recommendation that one preset delivers a particular frame rate or image quality. No comparable device-by-device handheld tests or handheld-specific performance statistics are established here.
Make the comparison fair and useful
Before switching presets, decide what “better” means for this game. A player who wants the clearest image may prefer a different trade-off from someone trying to reach a particular frame-rate target. The right choice also depends on the game, its implementation, the handheld’s display resolution, and the output resolution. A preset label does not promise the same result across different devices or titles.

Change one variable at a time. Keep the same game scene, resolution, and other graphics options while comparing the choices offered in the menu. Look at the image in motion as well as when stationary, and judge whether the result is acceptable at the display size and distance you normally use. If you change several settings between runs, you will not know which change affected the result. This comparison method helps you make a personal choice; it is not a substitute for controlled testing across devices.
Use the game’s own description of its presets if it provides one, but do not assume a label means identical image quality or performance in every game. The available sources do not provide a universal mapping from a particular preset to a specific output quality, frame rate, power draw, or battery life on handhelds. They also do not establish that choosing a more performance-oriented option necessarily meets a particular frame-rate target. Check the result in your own game instead of transferring a desktop benchmark or another handheld owner’s result to your device.
If the game does not reach your target with an available preset, that does not prove that the upscaler is malfunctioning. The preset is only one choice among the settings the game exposes. You can test other graphics settings separately, or reconsider the target, while keeping track of changes so you can compare consistently. If the image becomes unacceptable, return to another available option or turn the feature off. There is no evidence-backed universal setting that overrides those preferences.
Native game support and AMD Software upgrades
AMD describes two routes on supported systems: some games offer native ML-based FSR Upscaling in their own menus, while some titles already integrated with FSR 3.1 or later can be upgraded through AMD Software. These routes do not turn every game or handheld into a supported configuration.
If you do not see the option in a game, check the title’s own documentation and the device maker’s supported software information. Do not infer that a desktop driver feature will appear on your handheld. AMD’s driver release notes state that AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition does not include support for handheld gaming devices. Handheld owners should follow their manufacturer’s supported driver and software path rather than install desktop instructions on the assumption they apply.

A “yes” to one does not answer the others. Native integration means the game itself may expose an option; an AMD Software upgrade is a different route described for certain games with FSR 3.1 or later integration. Neither description guarantees that every handheld has the necessary official software support.

If a guide tells you to open a desktop AMD Software menu, first check whether the handheld manufacturer supports that software on your model. AMD’s release notes explicitly say Adrenalin does not include handheld gaming device support. That is why a desktop walkthrough may not match the controls or supported software on a handheld, even if the device has AMD graphics. Follow OEM instructions, and do not treat unofficial file changes or community modifications as official AMD support.
FSR Upscaling is not Radeon Super Resolution
Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) is a separate, driver-level upscaling option described by ASUS for the ROG Ally. It is not FSR 4, and using it should not be reported as enabling FSR Upscaling. ASUS’s Ally guide gives a 1080p-display example for games without FSR: run the game fullscreen at 1280×720 or 1600×900, then enable RSR so the driver scales the image to 1080p.
- Use this route only if you have an ROG Ally model and software configuration covered by ASUS’s instructions.
- Set the game to fullscreen and choose either 1280×720 or 1600×900 in the game’s resolution settings.
- Enable RSR through the supported Ally software controls, following ASUS’s device-specific instructions.
- Check the resulting image and performance in the game. This is an alternative for the cited Ally scenario, not a universal FSR setting or a recommendation for other handhelds.
Because RSR and in-game FSR Upscaling are different features, avoid enabling or describing them as though they were the same control. For other devices, consult that manufacturer’s documentation rather than transferring the Ally steps.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe resolution numbers in ASUS’s example describe a specific use case: a game rendered fullscreen at 1280×720 or 1600×900 and then scaled by RSR to the Ally guide’s 1080p output. They are not an FSR 4 preset, a general recommendation for every handheld display, or a guarantee of a particular performance result. The example is useful only when the device and software match ASUS’s instructions and the game does not offer the FSR route you want.
If a game already exposes an in-game FSR option, do not assume that adding a separate driver-level scaler is the same thing or that the two should be stacked. The cited ASUS guidance presents RSR as a driver-level fallback for games without FSR. It does not establish a universal combined setup or recommend applying Ally instructions to other brands. Keep the feature names and the instructions for each device distinct.
What AMD has said about handheld support
In a report published by Windows Central, AMD SVP and GM of Computing and Graphics Jack Huynh said in a translated quotation that the company planned to expand its machine-learning, AI-based FSR 4 technology to APUs, gaming laptops, and handheld devices “by the end of this year.” He also described a lightweight model tailored for APU environments. This is a reported forward-looking plan, not confirmation that FSR Upscaling is currently available on every handheld, or on any particular model.

Windows Central’s report attributes this statement to Huynh: “We will expand the machine learning and AI-based FSR 4 technology, which was preemptively introduced in existing external graphics cards, to the entire product lineup by the end of this year, including APUs, gaming laptops, and handheld devices. We plan to respond in two directions: existing APUs and launching new product lines.” The report also quotes him describing a newly developed lightweight FSR 4 model tailored to APU environments, with a focus on game graphics and low latency. These are translated statements about plans and development, not a compatibility list or a published handheld test.

A stated intention to expand support by then is not proof that the expansion has shipped, that it applies to every existing APU, or that a particular handheld has received an approved driver and game integration. Check current AMD compatibility information and the handheld maker’s release notes for the exact model before relying on the plan. A company-wide ambition does not answer which products will be supported, which games will expose the feature, or when a device-specific update will arrive.
How to compare options without a universal ranking
When comparing two potential ways to use upscaling, keep the relevant questions separate:
- Official support on the exact device: is the device identified by AMD or its manufacturer, or is support only being inferred from its AMD graphics hardware?
- Game integration and version: does the game provide native FSR Upscaling, does it have the FSR 3.1-or-later integration AMD describes as eligible for an AMD Software upgrade, or is the feature absent?
- Render and output resolution: what resolution is selected in the game and what resolution is used by the handheld display? ASUS’s 720p/900p-to-1080p example is specific to its ROG Ally RSR instructions.
- Image quality and frame-rate preference: which of the game’s offered choices looks acceptable while meeting the player’s own goal?
- OEM software availability: does the handheld maker support the needed driver and control path for this model?
These axes help you decide what to check, but they do not produce a defensible universal ranking of Quality, Balanced, Performance, native FSR, or RSR. The available device-specific evidence does not provide comparable handheld test results, and desktop graphics figures cannot establish how a handheld APU performs. A meaningful ranking would need a named device and game, comparable settings and scenes, and a clear target; without those, treat any “best” choice as a personal preference rather than a general result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every AMD handheld supports FSR 4: current compatibility information does not establish general official support for handheld APUs.
- Calling RSR “FSR 4”: RSR is a distinct driver-level option; the cited resolution steps are specific to ASUS’s ROG Ally guidance.
- Installing desktop Adrenalin instructions on a handheld: AMD’s release notes exclude handheld gaming device support from Adrenalin, so use the OEM’s supported path.
- Choosing a preset based on desktop benchmarks: desktop performance figures do not establish how an APU-based handheld will perform.
- Expecting a universal best setting: without a named device, game, resolution, and frame-rate target—and comparable tests—there is no evidence-backed preset ranking.
- Treating an announced plan as present support: the reported end-of-2026 expansion is an intention, not a device-level compatibility confirmation.
- Assuming a menu label proves the active implementation: FSR naming and integration routes can differ; verify the game and device path rather than equating every label with supported ML-based FSR Upscaling.
- Transferring one maker’s instructions to another device: ASUS’s RSR example is Ally-specific and does not establish the right resolution or controls for other handhelds.
- Changing several settings during a comparison: if resolution, scene, and other graphics settings all change together, you cannot tell which change affected what you see.
The practical answer
For an eligible device and game, open the game’s own graphics menu, select its FSR Upscaling option if present, and compare the offered presets against your actual image-quality and frame-rate priorities. If the game does not expose the feature, verify compatibility and follow the handheld maker’s documentation; use the RSR steps only for the ASUS ROG Ally case described above. Until AMD and device makers confirm support for a particular handheld, there is no defensible “best FSR 4 setting” to prescribe for handheld gaming PCs as a category.

Does every AMD handheld support FSR 4?
No general official support for handheld APUs is established by AMD’s current compatibility information, which lists selected RX 7000 and RX 9000 graphics products. Confirm support for your exact handheld, software path, and game rather than assuming AMD graphics alone is enough.
Where do I turn on FSR Upscaling?
For a supported game, AMD describes selecting an FSR quality preset in the game’s graphics or video menu. Some games may offer native integration; certain games with FSR 3.1 or later integration may be eligible for an AMD Software upgrade on supported systems. Handheld owners should follow their manufacturer’s supported software instructions.
Is Radeon Super Resolution the same as FSR 4?
No. RSR is a separate driver-level upscaling option. ASUS’s ROG Ally example for a 1080p display uses fullscreen 1280×720 or 1600×900 game resolution and then enables RSR to scale to 1080p. Those are Ally-specific instructions, not FSR 4 settings.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can I install AMD Adrenalin on my handheld to get FSR 4?
Do not assume desktop Adrenalin instructions apply. AMD’s driver release notes state that AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition does not include support for handheld gaming devices. Use the software and driver path recommended by your handheld’s manufacturer.
Will FSR 4 come to handhelds by the end of 2026?
Windows Central reported a translated statement from AMD executive Jack Huynh describing a plan to expand the technology to APUs, gaming laptops, and handheld devices by the end of 2026, including a lightweight APU-oriented model. That forward-looking statement is not confirmation that support is available on every device; check current AMD and OEM compatibility information.
The Bottom Line
There is no universal best FSR 4 preset for a handheld gaming PC. Confirm that AMD and your device maker support the exact handheld and game, then compare the in-game options against your own image-quality and frame-rate goals. RSR is separate from FSR Upscaling, and the cited 720p/900p-to-1080p instructions apply specifically to the ASUS ROG Ally example.
