For a security camera behind a window, the first night setting to change is infrared illumination: turn off the camera’s built-in IR LEDs or Night Vision mode. Infrared reflects from the pane and can turn the recording into a white halo. Also switch off lights and screens behind the camera, clean the glass, and place the lens close to the pane and as square to it as possible.

After reflections are controlled, tune exposure for the scene you actually need. A slower shutter and higher gain make a dark view brighter, but the shutter can blur moving people and vehicles while gain adds noise. Use WDR cautiously, add a separate illuminator on the outside of the glass if necessary, and move the camera outdoors when through-window night vision still cannot produce usable detail.

Why a camera sees glare instead of the yard

Glass is not transparent to every part of the camera’s lighting system. During the day, outdoor light usually dominates and a camera can record through a pane without obvious trouble. At night, the camera may activate infrared LEDs around the lens. That light travels toward the window, reflects from the inside surface, and returns directly into the lens. The sensor then receives a powerful near-field reflection instead of the weaker light from the yard.

Merkury Smart describes the problem plainly: “However, at night the infrared (IR) camera light may reflect off the glass and reduce any outside visibility.” eufy identifies the same trigger when a camera automatically switches on its infrared LEDs. The result can look like a white circle, a milky veil, or a broad halo that hides people and vehicles.

IR is not the only source of glare. A lamp, monitor, television, status LED, or pale wall behind the camera can reflect from the pane. Fingerprints, dust, window film and condensation scatter light. An oblique camera angle creates more visible reflections than a lens aimed straight through the glass. Nearby glossy furniture or a second pane can add another reflected image.

The most effective approach is therefore optical first and electronic second: remove light that can bounce back into the lens, then adjust exposure only after the reflection path is under control.

Prepare the window and camera before changing exposure

Clean and inspect the pane

Clean both accessible surfaces with a lint-free cloth and a suitable glass cleaner, then let the pane dry completely. Look for temporary films, stickers, mesh screens or condensation that can scatter IR and visible light. If the window is double-glazed, inspect for moisture or haze between panes; settings cannot correct a permanently fogged sealed unit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Put the lens close to the glass

Move the camera as close to the pane as the mount safely allows. A small gap gives interior light more room to reflect into the lens. Do not press a camera body against a pane if it blocks ventilation or creates condensation; bring the front of the lens close while keeping the device within its operating requirements.

Aim as perpendicular to the pane as practical

Point the lens straight through the window rather than across it. You may not achieve a mathematically perfect 90-degree angle in a room, but reducing the angle narrows the reflection visible to the sensor and increases the useful field of view outside.

Create a dark area around the camera

Switch off indoor lamps, display screens and decorative lighting behind or beside the camera. Close reflective curtains or use a matte, dark surface around the lens without covering microphones, vents or the field of view. Repeat the test after the room has reached its normal nighttime lighting state; a setup that works in a dark test room may fail when a lamp is turned on.

Step-by-step night configuration

  1. Disable built-in IR or Night Vision for a direct comparison

Open the camera app or recorder settings and look for Night Vision, IR illumination, Infrared LEDs, IR cut filter or a similar control. Set illumination to Off while leaving the camera in its night or low-light mode if the menu separates those functions. Record the same view for a short period with IR enabled and disabled. If the white halo disappears when the LEDs are off, the window reflection is confirmed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some cameras expose only an automatic Night Vision switch. Turn that switch off for the window-mounted camera and compare the result at the same time of night. The goal is not to make the image dark permanently; it is to establish whether the camera’s own light is the dominant problem.

  2. Remove indoor reflections during the test

With IR disabled, turn off interior lights and screens behind the camera. Check the pane from the camera’s viewpoint for lamp shades, bright doorways and shiny objects. Clean the glass again if a residual glow follows smears or droplets. Keep the lens close and square to the pane while you compare clips.

  3. Choose a shutter speed that preserves motion

If the camera offers manual exposure, start with its night profile and select the slowest shutter that still keeps a walking person or passing vehicle recognizable. A slower shutter allows more light to reach the sensor, but moving subjects can become streaked or soft. Axis warns that a static scene may look acceptable while a slow shutter makes motion noticeably less fluid.

Do not judge the setting from a still frame alone. Have someone walk across the expected detection area, or review a representative vehicle movement. Increase shutter speed if faces, plates or body outlines smear; accept a slower value only when the scene is mostly static.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  4. Raise gain only as far as needed

Gain electronically brightens the signal. TP-Link summarizes the trade-off: “Higher gain and slower shutter speed allow more light to enter the camera within the same time frame, resulting in a brighter image, and vice versa for a darker image.” Gain can reveal a dim scene without adding as much motion blur as a very slow shutter, but it also amplifies sensor noise and fixed-pattern artifacts.

Increase gain in small steps while watching dark areas such as foliage, pavement and clothing. Stop when the scene is identifiable; pushing gain further may produce a brighter-looking picture with less usable detail. If separate day and night profiles are available, save the change only to the night profile so daytime footage is not unnecessarily noisy.

  5. Set exposure for the important subject

Use exposure compensation, metering or a target-brightness control if your camera provides one. A bright porch, streetlamp or sky can cause the camera to underexpose the darker yard. Conversely, a small bright object can force the rest of the image to become too dark. Frame the area where a person would approach and check that faces or body outlines retain texture without clipping bright lamps.

  6. Test WDR, backlight and highlight controls conservatively

Wide Dynamic Range combines exposures to handle bright and dark areas. It cannot remove a reflection created by the camera’s own IR, so enable it only after the optical test is clean. Start with Auto, Off or Day only, depending on the menu, and compare a short night clip. Omada support warns that setting WDR too high at night can increase image noise. Verkada’s night-mode guidance uses DAY ONLY in an IR-reflection troubleshooting case.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Backlight Compensation (BLC) is useful only when the important subject consistently occupies a defined backlit region. It is not a cure for a window reflection. If BLC brightens the yard but washes out a nearby lamp or causes unstable exposure, return it to Auto or Off.

  7. Save and verify the night profile

Some cameras have independent day, dusk and night profiles; others apply one setting at all times. Confirm which profile you edited, save it, and test after the camera changes modes automatically. Check a clip at the time when the camera normally switches to night mode, not just hours later when the scene is fully dark.

What each setting changes

Control What to try first Benefit Typical night-side effect
Built-in IR or Night Vision illumination Off for a window-mounted camera Removes the main light source reflected by the pane Outdoor scene may become too dark without another light source
Shutter speed Use the slowest value that keeps motion recognizable Lets more light accumulate Slow values create motion blur and less fluid movement
Gain Raise gradually after shutter is acceptable Brightens the electronic signal More visible noise and grain in dark areas
WDR Auto, Off or Day only; compare clips Balances genuinely bright and dark parts of a scene High night settings can add noise and cannot remove IR reflection
BLC Use only for a consistent backlit subject area Raises exposure in the selected region Can wash out highlights or cause unstable exposure
Exposure compensation or metering Meter the approach path or face-height area Prioritizes the detail you need to identify Other parts of the frame may become darker or brighter

When and how to add external infrared

Turning off the camera’s IR may remove glare but leave the outdoor scene unusably dark. In that case, illuminate the scene separately rather than shining light back through the glass. Mount the illuminator outside the window, or place it inside at an angle where its beam does not travel straight to the lens. The camera should receive reflected light from the yard, not a direct beam or a reflection from the pane.

Match the illuminator’s wavelength to the camera’s night sensor. Do not assume that every 850 nm and 940 nm unit is interchangeable. A 940 nm illuminator is a practical option when the camera is designed to respond well at that wavelength. IQSIGHT’s current 940 nm short-range illuminator specification lists adjustable IR intensity, an integrated photocell and interchangeable beam diffusers; those features let you limit output and shape coverage instead of flooding the window.

Before mounting, verify the camera’s supported wavelength, the illuminator’s beam angle and usable range, its power requirements, and its weather rating. Aim the beam at the area to be recorded. Keep the illuminator out of the camera’s direct line of sight, and review footage from the actual mounting height because a beam that looks indirect from the floor can reflect at lens level.

If the camera has a built-in photocell and the separate illuminator has one too, check that both switch at compatible times. A mismatch can leave the scene unlit for part of the night or turn the illuminator on during daylight.

Motion, noise and identification: selecting the compromise

There is no setting that maximizes brightness, motion sharpness and low noise simultaneously. Decide what must remain identifiable. For a driveway, moving vehicles and people require enough shutter speed to preserve outlines. For a fixed gate or a static architectural view, a slower shutter may be acceptable. For face or license-plate identification, test at the distance and angle where those details will actually appear, not on a nearby object.

When the image is too dark, first remove reflections and unnecessary indoor light. Next, adjust shutter speed while testing movement. Then add only enough gain to lift shadows. This order prevents gain from masking an optical problem and avoids choosing an extremely slow shutter simply because the pane made the scene appear brighter than it really was.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review several minutes of footage rather than a single preview frame. Automatic exposure can pump when a person crosses a bright patch, and noise may become more obvious after compression or motion-triggered recording. Keep the setting that produces consistent, interpretable evidence throughout the period when incidents are most likely.

Troubleshooting by symptom

White circle or broad white veil appears at night

  • Turn off built-in IR or Night Vision illumination and compare the same view.
  • Switch off lamps, screens and status lights behind the camera.
  • Clean the pane and remove temporary film or condensation.
  • Move the lens closer and aim it more squarely through the glass.
  • If the veil remains with IR off, inspect for an indoor light source or another reflective surface.

The image is dark after IR is disabled

  • Use the night profile and increase exposure conservatively.
  • Choose a shutter that still preserves the motion you need.
  • Raise gain in small increments and stop before noise obscures detail.
  • Add a separately mounted illuminator on the scene side of the pane, matched to the sensor’s wavelength.

People are visible but blurred

  • Increase shutter speed from the current night value.
  • Accept a moderate gain increase to recover brightness without extending exposure time.
  • Test a walking subject and a passing vehicle; do not rely on a static preview.
  • Check whether the camera is combining frames or using a low-light mode that intentionally lengthens exposure.

The yard is bright but faces are black

  • Check whether a porch or streetlamp is driving the meter.
  • Test exposure compensation or a defined metering region over the approach path.
  • Use BLC only if the subject stays in a consistent backlit area.
  • Compare WDR Auto, Off and Day only; high night WDR can add noise.

Glare appears only when a room light is on

  • Relocate or shield the light rather than increasing camera gain.
  • Use a matte, dark surround near the lens without blocking vents or the view.
  • Keep monitors and televisions out of the reflection path.

Menu labels vary by camera

Manufacturers do not use one vocabulary. Look for equivalent controls under Image, Video, Night mode, Exposure or Advanced image. “IR illumination,” “IR LED,” “Smart IR,” “Night Vision” and “supplement light” may refer to the same physical emitters. “AGC” may be the gain control. “Slow shutter,” “digital slow shutter” or “long exposure” may alter the same motion-versus-brightness trade-off.

Hikvision’s dome-camera guidance illustrates a related optical principle: its foam ring must press firmly against the dome so IR light cannot reflect into the lens. A window installation has no factory foam ring around the outside pane, so the equivalent fixes are disabling the internal emitters, blocking indoor reflections and reducing the gap to the glass.

When an outdoor installation is the better answer

Through-window operation is a compromise. If IR must remain off and a separate illuminator still cannot provide enough range, the camera may never deliver reliable nighttime evidence from indoors. A persistent white halo, unusable motion blur or insufficient coverage is a signal to change the installation rather than keep adjusting software.

Mount an outdoor-rated camera on the exterior side of the window when local permissions, power and network access allow it. The camera can then illuminate the scene directly without a pane in the reflection path. Choose a model rated for the site’s weather exposure and install it so rain, condensation and glare from nearby surfaces are controlled. Merkury Smart’s support guidance distinguishes the same boundary: a window setup can work in daylight, while nighttime IR may reflect from the glass; disabling Night Vision is the indoor workaround. eufy likewise treats through-window night glare as a lighting and placement problem first.

A repeatable test checklist

  1. Record a short clip with the camera in its normal automatic night mode.
  2. Disable built-in IR or Night Vision illumination and record the identical view.
  3. Turn off every lamp, display and status light behind the camera.
  4. Clean the pane, move the lens close, and aim it squarely through the glass.
  5. Test a moving person or vehicle before selecting shutter speed.
  6. Raise gain only until the required subject is visible without overwhelming noise.
  7. Compare WDR Auto, Off or Day only; retain the least noisy option that preserves contrast.
  8. If the scene is still dark, install a wavelength-compatible external illuminator away from the reflection path.
  9. Review footage at the camera’s normal night-switching time and again during the darkest period.
  10. If the result remains a halo, blur or short-range view, relocate the camera outdoors.

The practical decision

Start with the optical fix, not a brighter exposure: disable the camera’s own IR, darken the room behind it, clean and square the lens to the pane, and keep the lens close. Then balance shutter speed and gain against the motion detail you need, using WDR and BLC only for genuine contrast problems. External illumination can restore range when it is mounted outside the reflection path and matched to the sensor. When those measures still fail, an outdoor-rated installation is the dependable solution.
