For a Fabric server that must accept ordinary vanilla clients, start with Lithium. Add FerriteCore when memory use or garbage collection is the constraint, and consider Krypton when network processing is the suspected bottleneck. ServerCore, ModernFix, Immersive Optimization and Chunky are targeted additions rather than universal replacements. ViaVersion belongs in a separate category: it handles client/server version compatibility, not general performance.
These mods run on the server, so players do not download them. Results depend on the Minecraft version, loader, hardware, world and player count; no single FPS, TPS or RAM improvement applies to every setup.
What “server-side” means in Minecraft
Fabric’s community wiki defines a server-side mod as one that “run[s] exclusively on the server, without the need for a mod on the client.” A player can therefore connect with the normal Minecraft client while the server administrator installs and updates the mod.
That is different from a client-side visual or interface mod, and from a required client-and-server mod that changes game content or networking in a way both sides must understand. Server-side performance mods generally leave the client unmodified and aim to improve simulation, memory use, networking or world preparation behind the scenes.

Server-side does not mean “works on every server.” A Fabric mod needs a Fabric server and a compatible Minecraft release. A NeoForge build needs NeoForge. A Paper, Spigot or Bukkit-only control panel cannot load Fabric or NeoForge mods unless the appropriate loader is installed. Always match the mod’s loader and exact game-version support before copying files.

Lithium: the best first installation
Lithium is the safest general starting point when the goal is better server performance without changing how vanilla gameplay behaves. Its project description calls it an open-source optimization mod that improves many areas of the game for better overall performance. Its listing marks it as server-side compatible and says it can be installed on a server without requiring clients to install it; the project repository likewise describes operation on client and server without requiring installation on both sides.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What Lithium optimizes
Lithium targets game-logic systems such as physics calculations, mob AI, block ticking and other recurring simulation work. Those are the operations that consume a server tick budget even when the client is rendering normally. Reducing their overhead can give the server more time to process players, redstone, farms and world updates.
When Lithium is the right choice
- You want one broadly useful optimization before diagnosing a specialized bottleneck.
- The server should retain vanilla mechanics rather than introduce gameplay rules.
- Players must connect with an unmodified client.
- You run Fabric, or a release that explicitly supplies a compatible NeoForge build.
What Lithium does not guarantee
Lithium is not a fixed percentage upgrade. The gain depends on what your world is doing: a quiet survival world, a redstone-heavy base and an entity-dense minigame stress different code paths. Measure tick time before and after installation instead of promising a universal TPS figure.
FerriteCore: choose it when memory is the bottleneck
FerriteCore reduces Minecraft’s memory usage and is identified as server-side compatible. It is most useful when the Java heap is regularly close to its limit, garbage collection causes pauses, or the operating system begins swapping. Lower allocation pressure can make a server steadier even when raw tick calculations are not the primary problem.
A workload-specific result, not a promise
The project page documents an example in the All Of Fabric 3 modpack where reported RAM use fell from 1,792 MB to 984 MB. That is a single workload example, not a benchmark that applies to every Minecraft version, modpack, world or hardware configuration. Treat it as evidence of the type of reduction FerriteCore can produce under particular conditions, not as a guaranteed saving.
Signs FerriteCore should come before another optimization
- The server’s heap remains near its maximum during normal play.
- Garbage-collection pauses coincide with freezes or player rubber-banding.
- Adding more heap only postpones the same memory pressure.
- Your mod list or world contains many registries, entities or data structures that increase allocation.
Do not use FerriteCore as a substitute for setting a sensible heap size, removing a leaking mod or checking operating-system memory. It reduces the cost of Minecraft’s data structures; it cannot repair every memory leak or make unlimited entity counts safe.

Krypton: reduce networking overhead
Krypton is a Fabric mod that attempts to optimize Minecraft’s networking stack and is listed as server-side compatible. It is a candidate when profiling shows that packet handling or network processing is taking a meaningful share of server time, particularly as concurrent player counts rise.
When Krypton is worth testing
- Tick time worsens as more players join even though entity and redstone activity remain similar.
- The server processes substantial movement, chat, inventory or world-update traffic.
- CPU usage is concentrated in networking rather than chunk generation or game logic.
Networking is workload-dependent. A small private server may see little change, while a busier server can expose the overhead Krypton targets. Install it only after confirming that network processing is a plausible constraint, and test the exact Minecraft and Fabric versions you operate.
Targeted additions for specific problems
Modrinth’s official optimization guidance lists ServerCore, ModernFix, Immersive Optimization and Chunky among Fabric performance options. They address different failure modes, so adding all of them automatically is not a sound plan.
ServerCore: scheduling and server-side behavior
ServerCore is a targeted choice when profiling points to server scheduling or related tick-management work. Check its configuration and release notes carefully: an optimization that changes scheduling priorities can interact with farms, redstone clocks or plugins. Treat it as a measured experiment after a baseline, not as a replacement for Lithium.
ModernFix: memory, loading and fixes
ModernFix is useful when the problem is broader than one hot game-logic path: slow startup, excessive loading work, memory behavior or a known bug may be involved. Its supported loaders and options vary by Minecraft release. Read the build’s documentation and change one setting at a time so a compatibility regression can be identified.
Immersive Optimization: entity-heavy simulation
Immersive Optimization is aimed at simulation costs such as entity ticking. It is a logical candidate for worlds with crowded farms, villagers, mobs or other persistent entities. Test farms and redstone contraptions after installation; any tool that reduces simulation work must be checked against the mechanics your world depends on.
Chunky: pre-generate terrain before players arrive
Chunk generation on demand can create visible lag when a player explores an ungenerated area. Chunky pre-generates a chosen area while the server is under your control, moving that work away from peak play. It does not make an already generated chunk cheaper to tick, and it does not eliminate the storage cost of the additional terrain.

ViaVersion is for compatibility, not speed
ViaVersion’s official project information covers Paper, Spigot and Velocity plugins, a standalone proxy, and Fabric or Forge integrations. Its purpose is allowing clients from different Minecraft versions to connect across supported server arrangements. That makes it valuable for a server that wants cross-version access, but it should not be presented as a performance mod.
Compatibility has limits: supported client and server-version combinations depend on the installed ViaVersion components and the underlying platform. Verify the matrix for your release, and test gameplay features that depend on newer blocks, items or protocol behavior.
How to select a server-side mod
- Identify the platform. Record whether the server is Fabric, NeoForge, Paper, Spigot, Velocity or a proxy arrangement. A mod’s name is not enough; the loader determines whether it can run.
- Record the exact Minecraft version. Use the version shown by the server and select a mod build that explicitly supports it. “Latest” is not a compatibility strategy.
- Find the bottleneck. Separate game-logic tick time, memory and garbage collection, network processing, entity ticking and chunk generation. Use the server console, profiler or monitoring tool you already trust.
- Choose the narrowest fix. Lithium is the broad baseline; FerriteCore is memory-focused; Krypton is network-focused; Chunky is for terrain preparation. Add a targeted mod only when the observed problem matches its purpose.
- Back up the world and configuration. Keep a restorable copy before changing the loader, mod files or settings. Include the world folder, server configuration and mod list.
- Install on a test instance first. Copy the matching mod and its required dependencies into the server’s
modsdirectory, start the test server, and confirm that it reaches a clean prompt without errors. - Test vanilla-client access. Join with an ordinary client and verify login, movement, inventories, portals, farms, redstone and any plugins or datapacks that matter to your community.
- Change one variable at a time. If Lithium, FerriteCore and Krypton are added together, you cannot tell which change helped or caused a regression. Record the version and configuration for each trial.
- Promote the tested build. Stop the production server cleanly, copy the tested files and configuration, then keep the previous set available for rollback.
What to measure before and after
A useful comparison uses the same world, player activity and observation window. Record several minutes of normal operation, then repeat the same scenario after each change.

Common installation and compatibility failures
The server refuses to start
Check the loader first. A Fabric mod placed on a Paper-only server, or a build for a different Minecraft version, will not load correctly. Read the first error in the log, not only the final shutdown message, and restore the previous mod set if the dependency chain is unclear.
Players still receive a mod-mismatch message
Confirm that the installed file is genuinely server-side for your exact release. Some projects publish separate client, server and common builds, and a mod can change its required-side behavior between versions. Remove optional client-only additions from the server test and verify the project’s release notes.

Performance becomes worse
Revert the last change, repeat the same workload and compare measurements. A server can be bottlenecked by chunk generation while you optimize networking, or by memory pressure while you tune entity ticking. More mods also add startup work and compatibility surface.
World behavior changes
Stop the server and restore the backup if farms, redstone, mob behavior or plugin events no longer work as expected. Re-test the suspected targeted optimization alone. A tool that aims to preserve vanilla behavior still needs validation against the particular mechanics your world uses.
Updates break the setup
Keep a copy of the working loader, Minecraft version, mod files and configuration. Supported versions and builds change frequently; update in a staging instance, not directly on the live world.

Small vanilla-style survival server
Install Lithium first on a supported Fabric setup. Measure tick time during normal exploration and base activity. Add FerriteCore only if memory pressure is visible, and leave Krypton for a demonstrated networking concern.
Large modded or content-heavy server
Start with the loader-compatible baseline, then investigate memory and loading behavior. FerriteCore or ModernFix may be more relevant than another game-logic optimization. Test every addition against the complete modpack and keep the exact versions recorded.
Entity-heavy technical world
Profile entity ticking before changing anything. Immersive Optimization or ServerCore may be appropriate targeted tests, but validate farms, villagers and redstone after each change. Chunky helps only with exploration-time generation spikes.

Evaluate ViaVersion and the appropriate platform or proxy integration separately from performance work. Confirm which client/server combinations are supported and test content that differs between versions.

Bottom line
Lithium is the strongest first choice for a server that wants broad optimization while players keep vanilla clients. FerriteCore addresses memory pressure, Krypton addresses networking overhead, and ServerCore, ModernFix, Immersive Optimization and Chunky are problem-specific tools. Install only builds that match your loader and Minecraft version, benchmark under a repeatable workload, and retain a rollback copy. ViaVersion can solve cross-version access, but it should not be counted as a performance mod.

Do players need Fabric installed to join a server running Lithium?
No. Lithium is described as server-side compatible, so players can connect with an ordinary client when the server and mod build are compatible.
Can these mods be installed on a Paper server?
Fabric and NeoForge mods cannot be loaded by a Paper-only server. Use a loader and integration explicitly supported by the mod, or choose a Paper-compatible alternative.
Will FerriteCore always cut RAM use by about half?
No. The documented reduction from 1,792 MB to 984 MB occurred in the All Of Fabric 3 example. It is workload-specific and is not a general guarantee.
Should I install every optimization listed here?
No. Match the mod to the measured bottleneck and change one variable at a time. Unnecessary additions increase compatibility and troubleshooting work.
Recommended Free Tools
Is Chunky a replacement for Lithium?
No. Chunky pre-generates terrain to avoid exploration-time chunk-generation spikes; Lithium targets recurring game-logic work.
