The most reliable migration monitoring stack combines three different evidence sources: Google Search Console for Google’s indexing and search signals, a crawler for URL-by-URL redirects and technical checks, and server logs for the URLs Googlebot actually requested. No single crawler can prove that Google indexed a page.
Choose tools by the failure you need to detect. Search Console reveals sitemap processing, indexing changes, queries, clicks, impressions, URL-inspection results, and (for domain or subdomain moves) Change of Address. A crawler tests the old-to-new URL map, redirect status and chains, crawlability, and differences between old, staging, and live sites. Logs show real bot requests and HTTP responses, including URLs that your crawl never discovered.
What a migration monitoring tool must prove
A URL-changing migration has several separate outcomes. A redirect can return the correct status while pointing to an irrelevant page. A new page can be crawlable but not indexed. Googlebot can request an old URL that your crawler omitted. Treat each outcome as a separate check rather than looking for one “migration score.”
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Mapping: every valuable old URL has a relevant new destination.
- Redirect behavior: the old URL returns a permanent server-side redirect, reaches the intended final URL, and does not create unnecessary hops or loops.
- Crawlability: the destination is reachable and is not blocked by robots.txt, a temporary noindex, authentication, or an error response.
- Indexing: Google’s systems process and index the new URL. A crawl result, log entry, or 200 response does not establish this.
- Search and users: impressions, clicks, rankings, and traffic transition from old URLs and properties to new ones.
Google states that “301 and other permanent redirects don’t cause a loss in PageRank.” That does not make an arbitrary redirect safe: Google also recommends mapping URLs to relevant replacements and warns against sending many unrelated old URLs to one generic destination.

Best tool combination by job
| Tool or data source | What it documents for a migration | Best comparison criteria |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | Sitemaps, indexing reports, search queries, clicks, impressions, URL Inspection, and Change of Address support Google-specific monitoring. | First-party Google data, indexing visibility, domain-move reporting, and report granularity. |
| Screaming Frog SEO Spider | Crawls and compares sites; audits redirect destinations, hops, loops, temporary redirects, and final-URL indexability; supports repeat crawls. | Redirect-chain detail, URL-list auditing, crawl comparisons, scale, and manual versus recurring checks. |
| Sitebulb | Saves crawls of old, staging, and live sites in a project and compares them; its documentation describes connecting Search Console data. | Comparison workflow, desktop or cloud workflow, and Search Console integration. |
| Ahrefs Site Audit | Its vendor documentation describes redirect monitoring and crawling staging or restricted sites, alongside broader technical auditing. | Redirect reporting, staging access, wider technical checks, and scale. |
| Server logs | Show which URLs Googlebot requested, the response returned, unexpected HTTP errors, and user traffic. | URL-level request evidence, retention, access, parsing, and analysis capacity. |
This is a role-based comparison, not a tested ranking. Vendor documentation establishes the listed capabilities; it does not establish that one product is more accurate or faster on your site. Also check whether a workflow runs automatically on a schedule or requires you to start each crawl.
Google Search Console: the indexing and search signal
Search Console is the only source in this stack that reports Google-specific processing. Use the property that contains the old URLs and the property that contains the new domain or protocol when your setup requires separate properties.
Sitemaps and indexing reports
Submit a sitemap containing the new canonical URLs. Monitor its processing status and the indexing report for a gradual reduction in old URLs and growth in valid new URLs. Investigate unexpected increases in excluded URLs, server errors, redirect errors, “blocked by robots.txt,” or “Crawled – currently not indexed.” Compare trends rather than expecting every URL to change at the same moment.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →URL Inspection
Use URL Inspection for representative high-value destinations and any URL with an unexpected status. It can show Google’s indexed state and the inspected URL’s canonical information, but it is a sample and not a substitute for a full URL-set audit.
Change of Address
For a domain or subdomain change, use Search Console’s Change of Address after verifying the old and new properties and completing the tool’s prerequisites and checks. Submit the new sitemap and update internal links to the new URLs. Google says Change of Address is unnecessary for an HTTP-to-HTTPS switch, a www/non-www change, or a path change that remains on the same domain.
Crawler auditing for redirects and crawlability
A crawler can test thousands or millions of URLs consistently, provided you give it the right URL inventory and configure access correctly. Crawl the old site, staging site, and live site as separate snapshots when the product supports saved projects.
Build a complete URL inventory first
Export URLs from the current site crawl, XML sitemaps, Search Console, analytics, internal databases, and other legitimate URL lists for the property. Include URLs with backlinks, meaningful traffic, conversions, and historical visibility. Deduplicate the list, preserve URL parameters where they represent distinct resources, and mark each row with its intended new destination and priority.

Audit the old-to-new map
Run the mapping list through a list-mode crawl or an equivalent script. For each old URL, record:
- HTTP status and whether the redirect is permanent or temporary.
- Every hop and the final destination.
- Redirect loops, chains, and repeated hops caused by protocol, host, or trailing-slash rules.
- DNS, TLS, timeout, 4xx, and 5xx failures.
- The final URL’s status, canonical target, robots directives, and indexability.
- Whether the destination is the appropriate replacement rather than merely a functioning page.
Check representative mappings manually, especially home pages, category pages, product or service pages, articles, PDFs, language variants, and URLs with parameters. A technically valid redirect to an unrelated destination is still a migration defect.
Compare staging with the old site
Save a crawl of the old site and crawl staging before launch. Compare URL coverage, titles, canonicals, status codes, internal links, headings, structured data, and important templates. Confirm that staging-only protections—temporary noindex, password authentication, IP restrictions, or robots.txt disallow rules—will be removed or changed at launch. Conversely, verify that production will not accidentally inherit a staging block.
Repeat after deployment
Run the same crawl configuration after launch and compare it with the pre-launch snapshot. Repeat after major fixes and on a schedule during the transition. This catches regressions such as a redirect rule overwritten by a release, newly broken internal links, canonical tags still pointing to the old host, or a template that emits a noindex directive.

Server logs: what Googlebot actually requested
Logs answer a question crawlers cannot: which URLs were requested by Googlebot and what response your server returned. Filter access logs by verified Googlebot behavior according to your operating procedures, then review old and new URL patterns, status codes, response times, and spikes in errors. Look for Googlebot repeatedly requesting URLs that should redirect, discovering parameter combinations you did not map, or receiving 5xx responses.
Search Console’s crawl history is not filterable by URL or path. Google’s troubleshooting guidance therefore recommends server logs when you need to determine whether specific URLs were crawled. A log request still proves only a request and response; it does not prove that the URL was indexed. Use Search Console indexing data for that separate conclusion.
Set measurable acceptance criteria
Before launch, turn the migration plan into a pass/fail checklist. Every priority old URL should have one documented destination or an intentional retirement decision. A redirect test should capture the original URL, each response in sequence, the final URL, and whether that final response is eligible for indexing. Keep the exported results so a later release can be compared with the launch baseline.

Define separate owners for redirect rules, crawl results, Search Console reports, logs, and analytics. This prevents a team from closing a ticket merely because a crawler returned a 200 response. Require a human review for high-value and ambiguous mappings: automated checks can identify a destination, but they cannot decide whether a product, article, language version, or PDF is genuinely relevant.
Use the same crawl settings before and after deployment wherever possible. Changes in user agent, authentication, JavaScript rendering, URL limits, or robots handling can create an apparent difference that is a measurement change rather than a site change. If staging requires credentials or IP allow-listing, document those settings so the pre-launch crawl is reproducible.
What each source cannot establish
- Search Console cannot replace a complete URL inventory. Its reports reflect Google’s known data and may not contain every historical URL, parameter variant, backlink target, or internal database record.
- A crawler cannot establish indexing. It can fetch a URL, inspect directives, and report a technical response, but Google may still exclude the page.
- Logs cannot establish indexing or ranking. They show requests and responses, including requests from Googlebot, not the final search decision.
- Analytics cannot validate redirects by itself. Traffic may fall because tracking, consent, attribution, or properties changed even when redirects work.
Using these limitations as design requirements makes the stack complementary instead of redundant.
Migration monitoring workflow
Before launch
- Inventory: combine the current crawl, sitemaps, Search Console exports, analytics, backlink or database URL lists, and other sources appropriate to the site.
- Map: assign each old URL a relevant new destination. Decide explicitly what happens to retired content; do not funnel unrelated URLs to one generic page.
- Crawl staging: compare staging with the old site and verify that the new architecture is crawlable while staging restrictions remain controlled.
- Test rules: test high-priority and representative redirects individually, then prepare a full list-based audit for launch day.
- Prepare observation: ensure Search Console properties, new sitemaps, analytics views, log access, crawl configurations, and alert ownership are ready.
At launch
- Confirm that permanent redirects resolve to the intended final pages without loops, unnecessary hops, temporary redirects in a chain, broken destinations, or non-indexable targets.
- Update internal links, canonicals, hreflang references, structured-data URLs, feeds, and sitemaps to the new URLs.
- For a domain or subdomain move, complete Change of Address after its checks, then submit the new sitemap.
- Start reviewing access and error logs immediately for unexpected status codes, latency, bot activity, and traffic patterns.
After launch
- Compare old and new sitemap and indexing reports over time; investigate unexpected crawl errors and excluded-URL growth.
- Use URL Inspection on priority pages and pages represented by suspicious patterns in the crawl or logs.
- Compare search impressions and clicks, and use analytics to follow users across old and new properties where tracking is configured.
- Repeat crawls to detect redirect, internal-link, canonical, robots, and template regressions.
- Keep the old URL inventory and redirect audit available so newly discovered requests can be added and retested.
Reading results without false alarms
Expect the three data sources to move at different speeds. A crawler can test the new site as soon as DNS and deployment are available. Logs reflect requests as Googlebot revisits URLs. Search Console indexing and search reports reflect Google’s processing and may lag behind both. Compare dates, URL cohorts, and status categories rather than demanding a same-day match.
Segment reports by old versus new host, directory, template, language, and priority. A broad increase in excluded URLs may conceal a smaller but serious spike in server errors or blocked high-value pages. Likewise, a stable total of indexed pages can hide the loss of important URLs if low-value pages replace them. Exported crawl and Search Console data make these cohort comparisons possible across multiple checks.
How long should monitoring and redirects continue?
Google’s site-move guidance generally recommends retaining redirects for at least one year. Its Change of Address help page specifies at least 180 days and longer while Google Search traffic continues. These are recommendations, not statistical guarantees. Keep redirects longer when old URLs still receive Googlebot requests, referral traffic, links, bookmarks, or meaningful user visits; removing them solely because an initial report looks stable can strand users and crawlers.
Google also warns that significant changes can cause temporary ranking fluctuations. For a medium-sized site, it says most pages can take a few weeks or more to move; larger sites can take longer because processing depends on URL count and server speed. Use those statements as general planning guidance, not a promised recovery date for a particular property.

Common failure modes and fixes
One redirect destination for unrelated URLs
Symptom: many old URLs return a redirect to the home page or another generic page. Fix: restore URL-level mappings to relevant replacements; where no relevant replacement exists, choose an intentional retirement response rather than manufacturing relevance.
Temporary redirects remain in the chain
Symptom: a 302 or similar temporary response appears before the final page. Fix: change the migration rule to a permanent server-side redirect and retest every hop from the original URL.
Redirect destination is not indexable
Symptom: the final URL is blocked, noindexed, canonicalized elsewhere unexpectedly, or returns an error. Fix: make the intended destination crawlable and indexable, or correct the mapping.
Staging controls leak into production
Symptom: production pages are disallowed or carry a temporary noindex. Fix: compare response headers, robots.txt, and rendered directives before and immediately after deployment, then rerun the crawl.
Search Console and crawler disagree
Symptom: your crawl reports a reachable page but Search Console does not show it indexed. Fix: treat this as an indexing question, not a crawler error. Inspect the URL, review canonical and quality-related exclusions, check logs for Googlebot requests, and continue watching the indexing report.
New URLs are absent from internal signals
Symptom: redirects work, but the new pages are missing from internal links, canonicals, feeds, or the submitted sitemap. Fix: update every URL-bearing template and data source, then crawl again and submit the corrected sitemap.
Choosing a practical stack
- Small site or infrequent move: Search Console, a complete URL-list redirect test, and accessible server logs may be sufficient. Repeat the crawl manually at each milestone.
- Large URL set or complex rules: add a crawler that supports list mode, detailed hop and loop reporting, saved crawl comparisons, and exports for remediation.
- Staging-heavy organization: prioritize a workflow that can crawl restricted environments and preserve old, staging, and live snapshots for comparison.
- High-risk domain move: use all three evidence sources, configure Change of Address where applicable, and assign owners for redirect, indexing, log, and traffic review.
When evaluating software, compare the URL capacity, redirect-chain detail, saved comparison workflow, staging access method, Search Console or analytics connection, export options, and whether checks recur automatically. A recurring feature is useful only if someone owns the alerts and remediation; a manual crawl is acceptable when milestones are clearly scheduled.

The best choice is the stack that covers your blind spots: Search Console for Google’s decisions, a crawler for deterministic technical validation, and logs for observed requests. Purchasing a broader audit platform does not remove the need for a complete URL inventory or human review of destination relevance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which tool proves that Google indexed a migrated URL?
Google Search Console is the appropriate source for Google-specific indexing status. A crawler can fetch the URL and a server log can show a Googlebot request, but neither proves indexing. Use URL Inspection for representative pages and the indexing report for URL-set trends.
Do I need Change of Address for an HTTPS, www, or path change?
Google says Change of Address is for a domain or subdomain move. It is unnecessary for HTTP-to-HTTPS, www/non-www, or a path change that stays on the same domain. Still update internal links, canonicals, and sitemaps, and monitor both old and new URL patterns.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteHow long should migration redirects stay in place?
Google’s site-move guidance generally says at least one year. The Change of Address help page specifies at least 180 days and longer while Google Search traffic continues. Keep them longer when old URLs still receive requests, links, referrals, bookmarks, or user visits.
Why does my crawler show a 200 page while Search Console does not show it indexed?
A 200 response establishes that the page was reachable during the crawl, not that Google selected it for indexing. Inspect the URL in Search Console, check canonical and robots directives, review indexing exclusions, look for Googlebot requests in logs, and continue monitoring the report.
What should be tested in a redirect audit?
Record the status, permanent or temporary nature of each response, every hop, loops, the final URL, errors, and the final page’s canonical, robots directives, and indexability. Then manually verify that important destinations are genuinely relevant, including categories, products, articles, PDFs, language versions, and parameterized URLs.
Can I redirect all old URLs to the home page?
That is unsafe when the URLs represent unrelated content. Google recommends relevant old-to-new mappings and warns against sending many unrelated URLs to one generic destination. Map each valuable URL to its appropriate replacement, or make an intentional retirement decision when no relevant replacement exists.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What do server logs add that a crawler cannot?
Logs show which URLs Googlebot actually requested and the HTTP response it received, including URLs your crawler never discovered and unexpected errors or parameter combinations. They still do not establish indexing, so pair them with Search Console reports.
The Bottom Line
Use the tools together: Search Console for Google’s indexing and search decisions, a crawler for complete redirect and crawlability validation, and server logs for observed Googlebot requests. Build the URL map first, test permanent redirects to relevant indexable destinations, compare old, staging, and live crawls, and keep monitoring long enough to catch delayed processing and recurring traffic.
