Short answer: The Sennheiser HD 560S is the clearest match for gaming in Sennheiser’s current official material, but it is not a universal winner. It is an open-back, wired headphone designed around detail and directional awareness, so it suits a quiet room and players who can use a separate microphone. In a noisy room, a shared space, or a setup that requires a built-in mic and strong isolation, its design may be the wrong fit.

Which Sennheiser headphones are best for gaming?

Among the models directly identified in Sennheiser’s gaming overview, the HD 560S is the most defensible recommendation. Sennheiser presents it as an open-back gaming headphone intended to expose fine detail and help the listener locate sounds in the game world. The company describes its presentation with phrases such as “natural and accurate sound,” “superb detail retrieval,” and the ability to “pinpoint the direction of any sound.” Those are manufacturer claims, not results from an independent gaming-audio test.

That distinction matters because “best” depends on your environment and equipment. The HD 560S is over-ear, open-back, wired, and rated at 120 ohms. It does not provide the isolation of a closed headphone, and a voice-chat setup requires a separate microphone. Conversely, the open construction can be attractive to players who want an airy presentation and do not need to block nearby noise.

  • Choose the HD 560S when: your room is reasonably quiet, you prefer an open presentation, you can run a cable, and you are willing to use a separate microphone for chat.
  • Be cautious when: other people are nearby, you need to prevent game audio from leaking out, you play in a noisy room, or you want one integrated headset with a built-in microphone.
  • Do not assume an amplifier is mandatory: Sennheiser’s support guidance says most portable players provide sufficient power, although amplification may benefit this 120-ohm headphone.

HD 560S specifications that affect a gaming setup

The following specifications come from Sennheiser’s official specification information dated 11 August 2026. They describe the physical and electrical configuration; they do not independently measure imaging, comfort, or in-game performance.

Specification HD 560S value Practical consequence
Design Over-ear, dynamic open transducer Ear cups do not seal the listener from the room as a closed design would, and sound can escape.
Connections 3.5 mm and 6.3 mm straight connectors It can connect directly to common 3.5 mm equipment; a 6.3 mm connection is available for compatible desktop or audio hardware.
Impedance 120 ohms Output power varies by device. Sennheiser says an amplifier is optional, not required, while noting that amplification may help.
Weight 280 g Useful for comparing the physical load of the headphone, but weight alone cannot predict comfort on every head.

The specification sheet establishes what the product is, not whether it will feel comfortable after a long session or sound preferable in a particular game. Sennheiser has not published a standardized comfort score in the material available for this article, and no independent comfort measurement is being claimed here.

What open-back means for gaming

Open presentation and environmental awareness

An open-back ear cup allows more interaction between the driver and the surrounding air than a sealed enclosure. In practical terms, you should expect less isolation from room sounds and more leakage to the room. Sennheiser’s gaming positioning emphasizes detail and directional cues, which is the reason the company associates the HD 560S with gaming. The claim is about the intended presentation; it is not a controlled comparison against every other gaming headphone.

Open construction can work well at a desk in a quiet room. You can hear a doorbell or a nearby person without removing the headphone, and the presentation may feel less closed-in than a sealed headset. Those benefits are conditional: a fan, television, conversation, or shared office can mask quiet game sounds, while someone sitting beside you may hear what you are playing.

When a closed design is the safer choice

If your priority is isolation, the HD 560S is a mismatch by design. Noise from a shared room can compete with game audio, and leakage may disturb another person. The source material does not establish a current Sennheiser closed-back model as a better gaming choice, so this article does not rank an alternative. Instead, use the design requirement as your filter: select an open headphone only when both leakage and outside noise are acceptable.

How to decide before buying

  • Play in a room where outside noise is low for most sessions.
  • Confirm that nearby people will not be disturbed by audible game sound.
  • Decide whether hearing some room sound is useful or distracting.
  • If you need strong isolation, treat the open-back construction as a reason to look elsewhere rather than a setting you can fix later.

Is the HD 560S comfortable for long gaming sessions?

The HD 560S weighs 280 g and uses an over-ear format. Those are the verified physical facts. They do not guarantee a comfortable fit for every wearer because comfort also depends on head shape, glasses, hair, clamp preference, ear position, and how warm the room becomes.

Sennheiser’s gaming material uses comfort-oriented positioning, but the reviewed official sources do not provide a controlled comfort test, a standardized pressure measurement, or a named study population. Treat comfort as a fit question rather than a proven universal advantage.

  • Extended frequency response and warm, natural sound reproduction
  • Around the ear design with padded earcups
  • Earpads, headband padding, and audio cord are easily replaceable, ensuring long life

A practical fit check

  1. Check ear clearance. The ear should sit inside the over-ear opening rather than pressing against the driver or pad edge.
  2. Check pressure. Wear it for at least several minutes while sitting in your normal gaming position. Pressure at the jaw, temples, or glasses arms is more informative than the listed weight alone.
  3. Check movement. Turn your head, look down, and reach for your keyboard or controller. A stable fit is more useful than a light specification that shifts during play.
  4. Check heat and room noise. Open construction does not remove the possibility of warm ears, and a quiet fit test will not reveal how distracting your room becomes during an actual session.

If you cannot try the headphone, use the 280 g figure as one comparison point, not as a promise of all-day comfort.

Do you need an amplifier with the HD 560S?

No. In a support article updated 6 April 2026, Sennheiser says an amplifier is not required for the HD 560S and that most portable players provide sufficient power. The same guidance says the headphone may benefit from amplification because its impedance is 120 ohms.

That means an amplifier is a setup decision, not an automatic purchase. Start with the device you already own:

  • If the volume is comfortably loud with clean sound: an additional amplifier is not necessary for basic operation.
  • If maximum volume is low or you hear distortion when you raise it: test the headphone on another output before buying equipment. The source device, its output level, software volume, and any operating-system limit can all affect loudness.
  • If you already own an amplifier: the 120-ohm rating is compatible with considering it, but the official guidance does not establish a required model or a guaranteed improvement in game performance.

Do not treat “may benefit from amplification” as proof that an amplifier will improve directional accuracy in every game. The available statement is a power and compatibility note, not an independent listening test.

How to connect the HD 560S to gaming equipment

Computer with a 3.5 mm headphone output

  1. Insert the headphone’s 3.5 mm connection into the computer’s headphone output.
  2. Open the operating system’s sound settings and select the connected headphone output as the playback device.
  3. Launch the game and set its output to the system default unless you have a reason to use a separate device.
  4. Raise the system and in-game volume gradually. Check that left and right channels are working before starting a session.

Desktop audio hardware with a 6.3 mm socket

  1. Use the supplied straight connection that matches the 6.3 mm output on your audio hardware.
  2. Select that hardware as the computer’s playback device if it appears separately in sound settings.
  3. Set the hardware’s output level conservatively, then adjust the game and system levels.

Console or controller connection

Compatibility depends on whether the console, controller, dock, or adapter provides a compatible 3.5 mm output. The HD 560S has a 3.5 mm connection, but the supplied material does not verify every console, controller revision, adapter, or operating mode. Check the exact hardware path you intend to use before purchase.

Using an amplifier or USB audio device

  1. Connect the HD 560S to the amplifier or USB audio device using the connector it accepts.
  2. Choose that device as the operating system’s playback output.
  3. Keep one volume control low while you establish a clean signal, then increase the level gradually.
  4. For chat, verify the microphone input separately; the headphone itself does not supply a microphone.

How to handle voice chat without a built-in microphone

The HD 560S is a headphone, not an integrated gaming headset with a microphone. If you use in-game chat, Discord, or another voice service, plan a separate microphone and select it independently from the headphone playback device.

Sennheiser says an add-on boom arm microphone can transform its HD 500 Series or HD 620S headphones into a complete headset. That statement covers the named families; it does not confirm compatibility with every individual configuration or identify a specific microphone SKU for the HD 560S. Verify the exact part and mounting compatibility before buying.

Separate microphone setup

  1. Connect the microphone to the computer, console, interface, or controller supported by your chat platform.
  2. In the platform’s voice settings, choose the microphone as the input device and the HD 560S path as the output device.
  3. Run the platform’s microphone test. Listen for your own voice and check that game audio is not being routed back into the microphone.
  4. Position the microphone close enough for a clear voice while keeping it out of the headphone’s cable path.

A separate microphone adds another cable, stand, or mounting decision. Its advantage is flexibility: you can replace or reposition the microphone without replacing the headphones.

Sound quality and directional cues: what is established

Sennheiser says the HD 560S is intended to provide “natural and accurate sound,” “superb detail retrieval,” and the ability to “pinpoint the direction of any sound.” The company also describes a 120-ohm transducer with a specialized polymer-blend diaphragm, saying it is designed for linear excursion and improved brilliance above 10 kHz.

Those statements explain the engineering and positioning Sennheiser wants readers to understand. They are not independent frequency-response measurements, competitive rankings, or proof that every player will hear the same advantage. Game engines, mixes, spatial-audio settings, hearing differences, fit, and room noise all influence what you perceive.

Sennheiser’s official product-development statements also describe a goal of neutral reference sound, accurate bass response, clarity above 10 kHz, and a natural soundstage. Keep the attribution in mind: these are comments from Sennheiser personnel about product design, not laboratory findings supplied by an outside test.

Settings that can undermine positional audio

  • Avoid enabling multiple surround or spatial-processing layers at the same time unless you have tested the combination.
  • Confirm that the game is outputting stereo or its intended spatial format to the selected device.
  • Check left-right balance if a directional cue seems consistently shifted.
  • Compare the game’s own audio mode with your operating system’s spatial setting instead of changing several controls at once.

Open-back headphones versus an integrated gaming headset

Decision factor HD 560S approach What to consider
Sound enclosure Open-back Favors an open presentation but allows room sound in and game sound out.
Microphone Separate microphone required for voice chat Adds equipment and setup steps; compatibility of a boom accessory must be verified.
Connection Wired 3.5 mm and 6.3 mm straight connections Requires a cable run and a compatible output; it does not provide a wireless mode.
Amplification Optional according to Sennheiser Most portable players should provide sufficient power, while an amplifier may help in some setups.
Weight 280 g Provides a reference point for fit comparisons, not a universal comfort result.

This comparison is about design choices, not a ranking of unnamed rival products. The available official material does not provide a controlled comparison across Sennheiser’s current gaming range.

Common problems and practical fixes

The headphone sounds too quiet

  • Confirm the correct output device is selected.
  • Check the game, operating-system, and hardware volume controls independently.
  • Try the 3.5 mm connection on another known-working source.
  • If volume remains inadequate, consider whether the source output needs an amplifier, while remembering that Sennheiser describes amplification as optional.

You hear room noise or people nearby

This is expected behavior from an open-back design, not a software fault. Move to a quieter room, reduce competing noise, or choose a closed design if isolation is a non-negotiable requirement.

Someone nearby hears your game

Sound leakage is also a consequence of the open enclosure. Lowering volume may reduce it but cannot turn the HD 560S into an isolated headphone. Use it where leakage is acceptable.

Voice chat does not work

  • Confirm that a separate microphone is connected and selected as the chat input.
  • Keep the HD 560S selected as the playback output.
  • Check the chat application’s permission and mute controls.
  • If you are using a boom accessory, confirm that its exact part is compatible with your HD 560S configuration; the manufacturer’s broad HD 500 Series statement does not verify every setup.

One channel is missing

  1. Reseat the connector at the source.
  2. Check the system’s left-right balance.
  3. Test another source to separate a game or device setting from a cable or headphone problem.
  4. If the imbalance follows the headphone across sources, consult the seller or manufacturer’s support process.

A buying checklist for the HD 560S

  • Room: Is your gaming space quiet enough for an open-back headphone?
  • Leakage: Can people nearby hear your game without causing a problem?
  • Chat: Do you already have a microphone, or are you prepared to add one?
  • Connection: Does your computer, console path, controller, or audio interface accept the 3.5 mm or 6.3 mm connection you plan to use?
  • Power: Does your current device reach a comfortable listening level? If yes, an amplifier is not required by Sennheiser’s guidance.
  • Fit: Is a 280 g over-ear headphone likely to suit your head, glasses, and session length? Weight is only one part of the answer.
  • Expectations: Are you evaluating Sennheiser’s stated goals for detail and direction, rather than expecting a guarantee of superior performance in every game?

Bottom line for different players

Best match: quiet-room competitive or single-player gaming

The HD 560S is a sensible match when you value Sennheiser’s open-back gaming positioning, have a quiet room, and accept a wired connection plus a separate microphone.

Conditional match: mixed gaming and general listening

Its 3.5 mm and 6.3 mm connections make it straightforward to use with compatible sources, and an amplifier is optional. Your decision still depends on whether the open design works in your room.

Poor match: noisy or shared environments

Choose a different design if you need strong isolation, minimal leakage, or a built-in microphone. Those are structural requirements that the HD 560S does not meet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The HD 560S is therefore a strong, evidence-backed Sennheiser gaming candidate—not proof of a universally best headphone. Match its open, wired, microphone-free design to your room and equipment before treating the manufacturer’s sound and directional claims as reasons to buy.
