There is no single best self-propelled walk-behind mower for every lawn. A battery model is usually the better fit when you want low routine maintenance, quieter operation and instant starting. A gas model remains compelling when you need to mow continuously by refueling and prefer established engine service. For a focused shortlist, compare the EGO Power+ 21-inch self-propelled mower, Greenworks Commercial 82V 21-inch brushless self-propelled mower and Honda HRN216VYA against your lawn size, terrain and ownership budget.
The most useful buying criteria are cut quality, deck width, height range, propulsion control, usable runtime or refueling time, noise, maintenance, warranty and the complete cost of the mower, battery, charger, fuel and replacement parts. The specifications below separate published claims from dated price references so you can make a defensible choice rather than choosing by motor voltage or brand reputation alone.
Quick answer: which mower fits which buyer?
| Best fit | Shortlist | Why it stands out | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battery buyer wanting a strong all-round candidate | EGO Power+ 21-inch self-propelled mower | Cordless operation, variable-speed self-propulsion and six cutting-height positions from 1.5 to 4 inches. | EGO’s published specifications do not state battery capacity, charge time, included battery or a tested acreage figure. |
| Large-lawn battery buyer | Greenworks Commercial 82V 21-inch brushless self-propelled mower | Greenworks Commercial claims 1.5 acres per charge, charging in as little as 60 minutes, 60 dB operation, 30% lower weight than gas and SmartCut technology. | The 1.5-acre figure is a Greenworks Commercial claim for 2026; actual area varies with grass, terrain, blade setting and battery condition. |
| Gas buyer wanting a benchmark for cut quality and continuous mowing | Honda HRN216VYA | Variable-speed Smart Drive, GCV170 engine, seven cutting heights from 1 to 4 inches, mulching or bagging capability and a three-year warranty. | Gas ownership adds fuel, oil, engine-service and storage requirements. |
| Very broad class comparison | EGO LM2200SP and Toro Timemaster 21220 | Pro Tool Reviews’ 2025 guide names the EGO LM2200SP its best battery-powered pick and the Toro Timemaster 21220 its large-lawn pick. | Those are guide selections, not a universal ranking; the guide reports a 1.0–4.5-inch cutting-height range for the tested class. |
If low noise and less routine service matter most, start with the battery candidates. If uninterrupted mowing and familiar engine servicing matter more, start with the Honda. Verify current price, stock, battery bundle, warranty terms and regional availability before ordering because those details change.
What a self-propelled walk-behind mower actually does
A self-propelled mower drives its wheels while you steer and control the walking pace. You still guide the machine, set the cutting height and decide whether to mulch, side-discharge or collect clippings; propulsion simply removes most of the pushing effort. That distinction matters on slopes, long mowing sessions and lawns with frequent turns.

Variable-speed drive is more useful than a headline voltage
Variable-speed controls let you slow down around trees, beds and gates, then increase pace on open turf. On a slope, a controllable walking speed helps maintain traction and keeps the blade moving through dense grass instead of forcing you to hurry. The EGO specifies variable-speed self-propulsion, and Honda lists variable-speed Smart Drive. Match the drive speed to your natural walking pace rather than assuming a higher battery voltage automatically means a better mower.
Deck width determines passes and maneuverability
The principal candidates here use 21-inch decks, a common compromise between coverage and maneuverability. A wider deck can reduce the number of passes on open ground, while a narrower or lighter machine is easier to turn between shrubs and gates. Deck width does not by itself establish cut quality: blade design, deck stiffness, blade speed, airflow and your mowing speed also matter.

Do not read a class-level range as a promise for every mower in that class. The EGO’s six positions and Honda’s seven positions are model-specific figures; the 1.0–4.5-inch range comes from Pro Tool Reviews’ tested class in 2025.
Cutting performance: what to inspect before buying
Mulching and bagging are different tests
A mower that leaves an even, fine mulch may behave differently when the bag is attached. Look for a deck that maintains airflow, a blade system that can repeatedly recut clippings and a height mechanism that stays level on all four wheels. Honda says its Twin Blade MicroCut system is designed for fine mulching and states that the HRN mowers deliver cut quality when mulching or bagging, including tough mowing conditions. That is a manufacturer statement, so treat it as a design claim rather than an independent laboratory result.
Blade speed and SmartCut-style control
Battery mowers must balance cutting power against energy use. Greenworks emphasizes brushless-motor blade speed and SmartCut technology, which is intended to adjust operation to grass conditions. In thick or damp grass, any mower can slow if you move too quickly or set the deck too low. A practical comparison is whether the mower lets you keep a steady walking pace without leaving uncut tufts, bogging down or repeatedly switching modes.

Height range should match your grass and season
The EGO’s 1.5–4-inch range suits owners who do not need an unusually short setting. Honda’s 1–4-inch range offers one lower position and seven total steps. A wider range is useful when you raise the deck during heat or drought, but the mechanism should also be easy to adjust and consistent from wheel to wheel. Never remove more than roughly one-third of the grass blade in a single mowing session; if the lawn is excessively tall, raise the deck and make a second pass rather than forcing the mower through a single severe cut.
Battery versus gas: the ownership decision
Choose battery when maintenance and noise are priorities
Battery mowers start without fuel priming, spark-plug work or oil changes. They also avoid exhaust at the operator’s position and generally produce less operating noise. Greenworks publishes a 60 dB figure for its 82V model and describes it as four times quieter than gas in its product wording. The exact perceived difference depends on distance, grass load and how the comparison was measured, so use 60 dB as the manufacturer’s published rating rather than a universal promise.
Battery ownership shifts attention to charging logistics. You need a compatible battery and charger, a dry storage location and a plan for a second battery or a pause if one charge does not cover the lawn. Confirm whether a listing includes the battery and charger; a bare-tool price can look inexpensive while the complete kit costs substantially more.
Choose gas when continuous refueling and established service matter
A gas mower can resume work after a quick refuel and does not require a charging window. That is useful for very large properties, communal mowing or owners who do not want to manage battery state. The trade-offs are gasoline storage, oil checks and changes, air-filter and spark-plug service, carburetor or fuel-system issues after poor storage, more vibration and higher operating noise.
The Honda HRN216VYA combines a GCV170 engine with variable-speed Smart Drive and a three-year warranty. Its seven height settings and stated mulching-or-bagging capability make it a useful gas benchmark, but the warranty does not remove normal maintenance or consumable costs.

Runtime and lawn-size planning
Use the published 1.5-acre figure carefully
Greenworks Commercial claims that its 82V 21-inch mower covers 1.5 acres on one charge and can charge in as little as 60 minutes. That is a product claim dated 2026, not a guarantee for every lawn. Coverage changes with grass height, moisture, slope, wheel speed, blade setting, overlap between passes, temperature and battery age. A dense, wet lawn can consume substantially more energy than a dry, regularly maintained one.

Measure the area you actually mow, subtract beds and hardscape, and compare that number with the manufacturer’s stated test conditions if they are available. If your usable area approaches the published limit, plan for a spare battery or a charging break rather than assuming the final strip will be covered.
A simple battery checklist
- Confirm the battery voltage and amp-hour rating, not just the mower model name.
- Check whether the advertised runtime is with one battery, a specific blade mode or a particular grass height.
- Verify that the charger is included and learn its full-charge time, not only a “rapid” time for partial charging.
- Ask whether the battery is compatible with other tools you already own; platform compatibility can improve total value.
- Store batteries in the temperature range specified by the manufacturer and avoid leaving them discharged for long periods.
Noise, weight and handling
Noise affects early-morning mowing, neighbors and hearing comfort. The Greenworks specification lists 60 dB and claims 30% lower weight than gas. Because Greenworks does not publish the comparison baseline and measurement method, regard the percentage as a manufacturer comparison. Even a lighter mower can feel heavy when the bag is full or when climbing a slope, so examine handle height, wheel traction, drive engagement and the ease of turning.
Test the controls in the position where you will actually mow. A propulsion lever that is comfortable on a flat path may strain your hands during repeated turns. Check whether the speed control can be adjusted while wearing gloves, whether the handle folds without pinching cables and whether the battery door or fuel cap is accessible without removing the bag.
Value: calculate the complete cost, not the shelf price
Consumer Reports listed guide prices of $530 for the Honda HRN216PKA and $370 for the Toro 21311 in 2025. These are dated reference points, not current quotes, and the Honda HRN216PKA is not the same model designation as the HRN216VYA benchmark discussed above. Retail prices, promotions, regional stock and included accessories can change, so do not use those figures as a present-day ranking.

Battery ownership worksheet
- Mower price with the correct battery and charger.
- Cost of an additional battery if the measured lawn cannot be completed on one charge.
- Replacement blade and any deck or drive parts over the expected ownership period.
- Electricity for charging; use the charger’s wattage and your local rate for an estimate.
- Warranty length, exclusions and the availability of local service.
Gas ownership worksheet
- Mower purchase price and any bag, mulch plug or side-discharge equipment not included.
- Gasoline and fuel stabilizer for the mowing season.
- Engine oil, air filter, spark plug and blade replacement.
- Seasonal storage work, including draining or stabilizing fuel as directed by the engine maker.
- Warranty coverage and the cost or distance of authorized service.
The lowest purchase price is not automatically the best value. A battery kit that includes a useful platform battery may cost more initially but serve other compatible tools; a gas mower may cost less to keep running if you already have fuel and service equipment. Compare the complete first-season cost and the recurring cost that matches your mowing habits.
Terrain and propulsion setup
Flat, open lawns
On a flat lawn with few obstacles, deck width and mowing speed dominate productivity. A 21-inch deck gives a predictable pass width, while variable-speed drive lets you walk briskly without outrunning the blade. Use the highest practical speed only when the cut remains even and clippings are distributed correctly.
Slopes
For slopes, prioritize traction, controllable propulsion and a comfortable handle over a nominal top speed. Mow across a slope only when the manufacturer’s safety instructions permit it; avoid sudden turns and never disable safety controls. If wheel slip occurs, slow the drive, raise the deck slightly and mow when the grass is dry. Steep or unstable terrain may be unsuitable for any walk-behind mower.
Tight landscaping and obstacles
Variable speed is valuable around trees, fences and beds because you can slow without repeatedly releasing and re-engaging the drive. Check the mower’s turning effort with the bag empty and full. A machine that is easy to push in a showroom may require more force when the bag fills or when the deck is set low in thick grass.
How to get the best cut from any self-propelled mower
- Inspect the lawn. Remove stones, wire, toys and branches. Mark irrigation heads and low edging that could strike the blade.
- Set the deck. Start higher than the minimum setting, especially in hot, dry weather or when the grass is tall. Keep all wheels at the same height.
- Choose the mode. Use mulching when the grass is dry and mowing is frequent; use bagging when clippings are long, damp or likely to smother the turf.
- Set propulsion. Select a speed that lets you walk naturally while the blade maintains an even cut. Slow down in dense patches instead of forcing the mower.
- Overlap passes. Overlap each pass slightly so wheel tracks and uncut strips are not left between rows.
- Change direction. Alternate mowing patterns on successive sessions to reduce ruts and improve upright growth.
- Clean safely. Stop the engine or remove the battery before clearing packed grass. Follow the manual’s instructions for tipping and cleaning; never reach under a running deck.
Buying checklist before you pay
- Confirm the exact model number; similar names can have different batteries, drive controls and warranties.
- Measure the lawn and estimate the time needed at a comfortable walking pace.
- Decide whether you need mulching, bagging, side discharge or all three.
- Compare the mower’s height range with your preferred seasonal cutting heights.
- For battery models, verify battery capacity, charger inclusion, charge time and the cost of a spare.
- For gas models, identify the oil type, fuel guidance, storage procedure and nearby service options.
- Check handle adjustment, wheel traction, drive engagement and the weight with the bag installed.
- Read the warranty term and exclusions, especially for batteries, chargers and commercial-use conditions.
- Check current stock and price immediately before purchase; the cited 2025 prices are historical references.
Common problems and practical fixes
| Symptom | Likely causes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Uncut strips or ragged tips | Dull blade, excessive speed, low deck or wet grass | Sharpen or replace the blade, slow the drive, raise the deck and mow when dry. |
| Battery ends before the lawn is finished | Area exceeds the tested claim, dense grass, low temperature or aged battery | Measure actual area, raise the deck, reduce overlap, charge fully and consider a second battery. |
| Drive feels too fast | Speed control set above your walking pace | Reduce variable-speed setting and use a slower pace around obstacles or slopes. |
| Gas engine surges or stalls | Stale fuel, clogged air filter, low oil or heavy wet grass | Follow the engine manual for fuel, oil and filter checks; do not continue operating with an unresolved safety or lubrication issue. |
| Clippings clog the deck or chute | Wet grass, low height, overgrown lawn or restricted airflow | Mow more frequently, raise the deck, slow down and clean only with the machine stopped and isolated from its power source. |

Pick the Greenworks Commercial 82V when
You have a larger lawn and value a published acreage target, fast charging and a 60 dB rating. Treat the 1.5-acre figure and 30% lower-weight statement as manufacturer claims for 2026, then allow a margin for wet or dense conditions and confirm the battery bundle.
Pick the Honda HRN216VYA when
You prefer gasoline refueling, want a GCV170 engine and variable-speed Smart Drive, and value seven height settings, a stated mulching-or-bagging design and a three-year warranty. Budget for fuel and routine engine service from the start.
Use the class guide as a cross-check, not a substitute for fit
Pro Tool Reviews’ 2025 guide names EGO LM2200SP its best battery-powered pick and Toro Timemaster 21220 its large-lawn pick. Those labels can narrow a shopping list, but your final choice should still be based on the exact package, local support, lawn area and terrain.
