Ghost is the best self-hosted WordPress alternative for a publication, newsletter, or membership site. Choose Drupal when structured content, granular permissions, integrations, or custom application behavior are the priority. Choose Joomla when you want a conventional, general-purpose PHP CMS with a familiar web administration model.

None of these choices eliminates server administration. A VPS leaves you responsible for the operating system, web server, database, TLS certificates, backups, monitoring, and application updates. The right choice is the one whose publishing model and maintenance workload match your team.

Quick comparison

Platform Best fit Publishing and memberships Structured content and custom apps Runtime requirements Operational profile
Ghost Professional publications, newsletters, and membership products Built in: newsletters, memberships, paid subscriptions, XML sitemaps, canonical tags, and social metadata More focused and less broad than a general-purpose framework Ubuntu 24, Node.js 22 LTS, MySQL 8.0, NGINX, Systemd, a non-root user, and at least 1 GB of memory Manual installation, weekly updates, SSL, backups, and separate services for some email, analytics, and CDN features
Drupal Complex content models, permissions, integrations, and custom applications Possible through core configuration and modules, but the editorial stack is more configurable than turnkey Strongest option in this group PHP 8.3 or newer; Apache, NGINX, or another supported server; MariaDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, or SQLite; 64 MB minimum PHP memory for core Deliberate patching, Composer and module management, backups, and security monitoring
Joomla General-purpose sites that prefer a traditional PHP CMS administration model Available through extensions and configuration; exact capabilities depend on the selected version and extensions Broader than a publication-only system, but less specialized for deeply customized applications than Drupal Version-specific PHP, database, and web-server requirements must be checked before deployment Conventional PHP-CMS maintenance; extension compatibility and version support need regular review
WordPress Teams that depend on its existing ecosystem, plugins, themes, or migration tooling Usually assembled from plugins and themes rather than one focused publishing product Very broad ecosystem, with corresponding plugin and update complexity PHP 8.3 or newer, MariaDB 10.11 or newer or MySQL 8.0 or newer, HTTPS, and Apache or NGINX recommended Updates, plugin risk, backups, certificates, and the full VPS stack remain your responsibility

The table is a decision aid, not a universal ranking. A content-heavy membership publication and a multi-role application have different definitions of “best.”

What “self-hosted on a VPS” actually means

Self-hosting means you control the virtual machine and install the CMS, database, web server, and supporting services yourself. You choose the operating-system image, network rules, storage, backups, and upgrade schedule. That control can be valuable for data residency, custom integrations, and predictable architecture, but it also transfers operational work from a managed host to your team.

Responsibilities you keep

  • Provisioning and hardening the VPS operating system.
  • Installing and configuring the web server, runtime, database, and CMS.
  • Obtaining, renewing, and testing HTTPS certificates.
  • Applying operating-system, runtime, CMS, module, theme, and extension security updates.
  • Creating backups, storing copies away from the VPS, and testing restoration.
  • Monitoring uptime, disk space, memory, error logs, certificate expiry, and failed jobs.
  • Controlling administrator access, SSH keys, firewall rules, and least-privilege accounts.

What a VPS does not guarantee

A VPS does not automatically make a site faster, safer, or cheaper than a managed service. Performance depends on the same variables that affect any web system: CPU and memory, storage, traffic patterns, database queries, caching, media delivery, and application configuration. Security depends on timely patching and sound configuration, not merely on owning the server.

Ghost: the clearest publishing-first alternative

Ghost is open-source publishing software designed around professional editorial work. Its feature set includes built-in SEO controls, memberships, paid subscriptions, newsletters, XML sitemaps, canonical tags, and social metadata. Those features reduce the number of separate plugins a publication normally has to assemble.

When Ghost is the right choice

  • Your primary output is articles, newsletters, podcasts, or other serialized publishing.
  • You want reader accounts, memberships, or paid subscriptions to be part of the core product.
  • Editors need a focused writing experience rather than a general application builder.
  • Your team can administer Linux, Node.js, MySQL, NGINX, certificates, and backups.

Documented self-hosting stack

Ghost documents a self-hosting stack consisting of Ubuntu 24, Node.js 22 LTS, MySQL 8.0, NGINX, and Systemd. Ghost commands should be run as a non-root user, and the documented minimum memory is 1 GB. Treat those values as the requirements for the documented setup, not as a promise that every workload will perform well with only the minimum.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Component Ghost’s documented self-hosting requirement Why it matters
Operating system Ubuntu 24 Provides the supported base expected by the installation guidance.
Runtime Node.js 22 LTS Runs the Ghost application and must remain on a supported release line.
Database MySQL 8.0 Stores content, members, settings, and other application data.
Web server NGINX Terminates web traffic and proxies requests to Ghost.
Process management Systemd Keeps the application running and starts it after a reboot.
Memory At least 1 GB Minimum documented capacity; traffic, imports, image processing, and other services may require more.

The operational trade-off

Ghost’s documentation is explicit that self-hosting requires manual installation, weekly updates, server maintenance, SSL, and backups. Email delivery, analytics, and CDN functions may require separate services. You gain direct SSH and database access and full control of the environment, but you must schedule and verify those tasks.

Ghost self-hosting checklist

  1. Provision a supported Ubuntu 24 VPS with enough memory for Ghost plus the operating-system and monitoring overhead.
  2. Create a non-root administrative account and use SSH keys; reserve root access for controlled maintenance.
  3. Install the documented Node.js, MySQL, NGINX, and Systemd components in supported versions.
  4. Configure the domain, DNS records, NGINX proxying, and HTTPS before opening the publication to readers.
  5. Set up automated database and content backups with at least one copy outside the VPS.
  6. Configure email, analytics, and CDN services separately if your publication needs them.
  7. Establish a weekly update window and test the site, member sign-in, newsletter delivery, and subscription flows after updates.

Ghost pricing context

Ghost’s comparison material lists Ghost(Pro), its official managed service, from $15 per month and self-hosting from $10 per month before optional services. These are volatile starting prices, not a complete cost estimate for a production site. A self-hosted budget must also include the VPS, storage, backups, email delivery, analytics, CDN, and the value of whoever performs maintenance.

Drupal: the strongest option for structured content and custom applications

Drupal is the broadest general-purpose choice in this comparison. It is suited to sites with many content types, complex relationships, granular roles and permissions, workflow rules, integrations, or application behavior that goes beyond a conventional blog.

What Drupal does especially well

  • Modeling structured content instead of treating every page as a single body field.
  • Separating editorial, moderation, publishing, and administrative permissions.
  • Connecting content to external systems through integrations and custom code.
  • Supporting sites that evolve into portals, directories, intranets, or custom applications.

Documented server requirements

Drupal’s official guide documents support for Apache, NGINX, and other web servers, with MariaDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQLite as database options. A core installation is about 100 MB before additional modules, themes, media, backups, and generated files. Drupal documents PHP 8.3 or newer and a minimum PHP memory setting of 64 MB for core; multiple modules, Composer operations, imports, and media processing commonly require more memory.

Drupal’s web-server documentation was updated on 13 September 2026. It tells administrators to follow PHP security releases and upgrade or patch servers as needed. On a VPS, that means treating the PHP runtime, database, web server, Composer dependencies, contributed modules, and Drupal core as one maintenance program rather than updating only the CMS dashboard.

Drupal’s trade-off

Drupal’s flexibility creates a larger design and maintenance surface. Before building, define content types, fields, roles, moderation states, URL patterns, and integration boundaries. Keep a record of modules and Composer dependencies, test updates in a staging environment, and make backups before schema changes. Drupal is a strong fit when that discipline is justified by the application; it is unnecessary complexity for a small publication that only needs writing, newsletters, and memberships.

Joomla: a credible middle-ground PHP CMS

Joomla remains a reasonable general-purpose alternative for teams that want a traditional PHP CMS with an administrative control panel, configurable menus, and an extension ecosystem. It sits between a publication-focused product and a highly modeled application platform.

Where Joomla fits

  • Company, community, association, and portal sites that need more than a simple blog.
  • Teams comfortable with PHP hosting and a conventional CMS administration model.
  • Projects that need extensions but do not require Drupal-level content modeling or custom application architecture.

Check requirements for the exact version

The Joomla Project publishes technical requirements for supported web-server environments. Do not freeze PHP, database, or web-server versions in a deployment plan based on an old article. Confirm the requirements for the exact Joomla release you selected, then verify that the VPS image, PHP packages, database server, and extensions all meet them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Joomla’s operational trade-off

Joomla’s familiar PHP stack can be easier to place alongside other PHP services, but every extension becomes part of the compatibility and security picture. Record installed extensions, remove those you do not use, follow the project’s security announcements, and test upgrades before applying them to production.

Should you stay with WordPress?

Switching CMSs is not automatically an improvement. WordPress remains the pragmatic choice when your team depends on its plugin and theme ecosystem, existing editorial workflows, or migration tooling. The reasons to move should be specific: a publication wants Ghost’s integrated membership and newsletter workflow; an application needs Drupal’s content model and permissions; or a team prefers Joomla’s general-purpose PHP administration.

Use the current WordPress baseline when comparing workload

WordPress.org currently recommends PHP 8.3 or greater, MariaDB 10.11 or greater or MySQL 8.0 or greater, and HTTPS. Apache or NGINX is recommended. Older PHP and MySQL releases are end-of-life and may expose a site to security vulnerabilities. An alternative only reduces operational complexity if its supported stack, update process, and extension burden are genuinely easier for your team to operate.

Compare the platforms by the work your site must do

Publishing, newsletters, and memberships

Ghost has the most direct path when publishing is the product. SEO metadata, XML sitemaps, canonical tags, newsletters, memberships, and paid subscriptions are part of its documented publishing focus. WordPress can provide similar outcomes through its ecosystem, while Drupal and Joomla can be configured for them through core features and extensions, but the exact assembly depends on the project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Structured content, permissions, and applications

Drupal is the leading choice when content has many relationships, editors have distinct permissions, or the site must behave like an application. Joomla can cover general portal and organizational needs. Ghost is intentionally narrower: excellent for a publication model, less suitable when the site is really a multi-entity business application.

Extensions and themes

A large ecosystem increases options and also increases review work. Before selecting any CMS, list the capabilities you actually need, identify which are native, and count the extensions that would be required. Fewer extensions generally mean fewer compatibility and update events, but only if the core product already covers your requirements.

Runtime and database complexity

Ghost introduces a Node.js and MySQL stack with NGINX and Systemd. Drupal, Joomla, and WordPress use PHP-based hosting, but their exact supported versions change over time. Choose the stack your administrators already understand, unless a product capability is important enough to justify learning a different runtime.

Maintenance and security workload

Every option requires operating-system patches, HTTPS, backups, monitoring, and recovery testing on a VPS. Ghost calls for weekly application updates and separate service management. Drupal adds PHP, Composer, module, and schema-change coordination. Joomla and WordPress require disciplined extension and core updates. The least-maintenance CMS is the one that meets your requirements with the fewest moving parts and a team that will actually patch it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

A practical VPS deployment plan

1. Define the application before choosing the CMS

  • List content types: articles, products, events, profiles, documentation, or other entities.
  • List roles and approval stages, including who can draft, review, publish, and administer.
  • Decide whether newsletters, paid memberships, or subscriptions are core requirements.
  • Inventory integrations such as search, payments, CRM, analytics, email, and media delivery.
  • Set recovery objectives: how much data you can lose and how quickly the site must return.

2. Select a supported VPS image and capacity

Start with the operating system and runtime versions required by the CMS you selected. Budget memory for the CMS, database, web server, background jobs, monitoring, and bursts such as imports or updates. Ghost documents 1 GB as a minimum for its self-hosted stack; Drupal’s 64 MB PHP figure is a core minimum, not a recommended whole-server size.

An Antihost VPS is a self-managed Linux VPS with AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D, NVMe storage, full root access, and core regions in the USA East, Netherlands, and Ukraine.

3. Harden access before installing the application

  • Use a non-root administrative account for routine work.
  • Prefer SSH keys and restrict administrative access to trusted networks where practical.
  • Apply firewall rules that expose only required services.
  • Keep the operating system and runtime on supported security releases.
  • Record who has access and how access will be revoked.

4. Install the web stack and CMS

Follow the platform’s current installation documentation for the exact release. Do not mix package versions from an older guide with a newer CMS. Configure the database with a dedicated application account, keep secrets outside publicly served directories, and use the web server as the controlled entry point to the application.

5. Enable HTTPS, backups, and monitoring before launch

Test certificate renewal, redirect HTTP to HTTPS, and verify that administrative sessions and forms work securely. Back up both the database and uploaded/generated files. Store at least one copy away from the VPS and perform a restoration test. Monitor availability, disk growth, memory pressure, error logs, scheduled jobs, and certificate expiry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Establish an update and rollback routine

Maintain a staging copy or other safe test environment for application and extension updates. Take a fresh backup before changes, apply updates during a defined maintenance window, exercise the critical user journeys, and keep a documented rollback path. For Drupal, include Composer dependencies and database schema changes; for Ghost, include member, newsletter, and subscription flows; for Joomla and WordPress, include extension and theme compatibility.

Migration considerations

Inventory before exporting

Record URLs, authors, publication dates, taxonomies, media files, redirects, metadata, comments, accounts, and integrations. A migration that moves only article text can still break search traffic, image references, feeds, newsletters, and member access.

Preserve addresses and metadata

Map old URLs to their new destinations, preserve canonical behavior, regenerate XML sitemaps, and check robots directives. Export and verify images separately rather than assuming the CMS will reconstruct every attachment relationship.

Run a rehearsal

  1. Import a representative sample into a non-production instance.
  2. Check formatting, embedded media, authors, dates, categories, redirects, and search indexing controls.
  3. Test editor permissions and publishing workflows for each role.
  4. Test newsletter signup, member login, payment or subscription flows, and transactional email where applicable.
  5. Measure the time required for the final import and schedule a controlled cutover.

Performance: avoid universal speed claims

There is no defensible universal speed winner without testing identical VPS hardware, traffic, caching, database contents, media, and configuration. Ghost’s comparison page cites an independent claim of responses up to 1,900% faster than WordPress, but the underlying methodology is not established in the available source material. Treat that figure as a vendor-cited claim, not a general benchmark.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For your own decision, establish a repeatable test: use the same VPS class, representative content, cache state, concurrent requests, and measurement window. Record uncached and cached response times, error rates, database load, memory use, and recovery behavior after restarts. Optimize only after identifying the bottleneck.

Managed hosting versus doing every task yourself

Ghost documents Ghost(Pro) as its official managed service. Managed hosting trades direct server control for coverage of installation, updates, backups, SSL, support, and day-to-day operations. That can be the better choice when your team wants Ghost’s publishing model but does not want to own every server task.

A second path is to keep the CMS on your VPS while hiring a verified hosting or maintenance partner for patching, backups, monitoring, and incident response. Verify the provider’s current program, service scope, data location, recovery commitments, and geography before relying on it. The key question is not whether a service is “managed,” but which responsibilities are contractually included and which remain yours.

Decision checklist

  • Choose Ghost if publishing, newsletters, memberships, and paid subscriptions are the central product and your team can maintain a Node.js/MySQL VPS.
  • Choose Drupal if structured content, permissions, integrations, or custom application behavior outweigh the desire for a minimal editorial stack.
  • Choose Joomla if you want a conventional, general-purpose PHP CMS and will verify requirements and extension compatibility for the selected release.
  • Keep WordPress if its ecosystem and existing content materially reduce project risk, and address operational weaknesses through supported runtimes, disciplined updates, backups, and monitoring.
