For most VPS owners, Flarum is the best low-resource starting point, NodeBB is the stronger choice for real-time communities, and Discourse is the best mature, feature-rich platform when you can provide a larger server. MyBB and phpBB remain sensible options for conventional, lightweight forums. Your decision should follow available RAM, preferred runtime, database skills, and how much administration you want to handle.
Quick recommendations
| Use case | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 GB VPS and a small community | Flarum | PHP-based, compact interface and several supported databases; published RAM figures are inconsistent, so verify performance on your VPS. |
| Interactive community with live notifications or chat-style features | NodeBB | Node.js architecture and Redis support suit real-time workloads, but you must operate Node.js plus MongoDB or Redis. |
| Large, feature-heavy community | Discourse | The most mature and feature-dense option in this shortlist, with the clearest production guidance, at the cost of a heavier stack. |
| Traditional bulletin-board layout | MyBB or phpBB | Both are established PHP forum projects. The available material does not provide current hardware requirements, so size from your own tests. |
There is no independently verified industry benchmark that ranks these projects by RAM consumption. Official requirements exist for some components, while many VPS figures come from hosting pages or community posts. Treat every non-official number as a starting point rather than a capacity guarantee.
What to decide before renting a VPS
Available memory
RAM is usually the first constraint. A forum shares memory with the operating system, web server or reverse proxy, database, cache, mail tools, monitoring, and any control panel. A stated application minimum is not the same as comfortable production capacity, especially during dependency installation, upgrades, search indexing, image processing, or asset compilation.
Runtime and database preference
Discourse packages its own Ruby, PostgreSQL, Redis, and application services in Docker. Flarum runs in a PHP web stack and supports several database engines. NodeBB requires Node.js and either MongoDB or Redis. MyBB and phpBB use the conventional PHP hosting model. Choose the stack you can patch, back up, and troubleshoot rather than selecting on interface screenshots alone.

Administration time
Self-hosting transfers responsibility to you. You will need to apply operating-system and application updates, protect the administrator account, renew TLS certificates, test backups, monitor disk growth, and maintain outbound email. A managed forum service can hide much of that work; a VPS does not.
Discourse: the mature, full-featured choice
Discourse has the longest operational history and the broadest feature set in this shortlist. It is designed for communities that need robust moderation, trust levels, notifications, search, responsive design, and a large extension ecosystem. Those capabilities come with a larger baseline footprint than the lighter PHP options.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOfficial installation and server requirements
Discourse officially supports Docker-based installations only. The official installation guide, read on October 14, 2026, calls for SSH access to a 64-bit Linux server with Docker support, at least 1 GB of RAM with swap, a dual-core processor recommendation, and 10 GB of disk space. Its application stack includes PostgreSQL, Redis 7, and Ruby 3.2 or newer inside the containerized deployment.
The official cloud installation guide recommends a more practical tier: 2 GB or more of RAM, at least two CPU cores, and 20 GB or more of disk. That recommendation is a better baseline for a new production forum than the absolute minimum, because the server also needs room for the operating system, uploads, logs, database growth, and upgrades.
What memory figures really mean
Third-party production guidance commonly suggests 4 GB of RAM, 2–4 virtual CPUs, and a 40 GB SSD for a comfortable forum. One such guide places an idle stack around 1.4–1.8 GB of RAM. These are not Discourse-published guarantees. The asset-build stage is often the memory peak; external guidance describes 2 GB as a comfortable build target and 4 GB when a busy site uses plugins. Keep swap enabled, but do not treat swap as a substitute for sufficient physical RAM.

When Discourse is the right fit
- You want the most mature moderation and community-management feature set in this group.
- You can start with the official 2 GB-plus recommendation and scale toward 4 GB as traffic, plugins, and uploads grow.
- You are comfortable operating Docker and the bundled PostgreSQL and Redis services.
On a 1 GB VPS, installation and upgrades can fail even when an idle instance appears to fit. A larger server or a temporary resize for builds is safer than repeatedly fighting out-of-memory errors.
Flarum: a compact PHP forum for smaller VPSs
Flarum is the most natural first trial when you want a modern forum on a modest PHP server. Its core interface is deliberately compact, and functionality is extended through Composer-managed packages. It is not accurate to promise a universal RAM requirement: Flarum’s official documentation does not publish one.
Official software prerequisites
The current installation documentation requires PHP 8.3 or newer and these extensions: curl, dom, fileinfo, gd, json, mbstring, openssl, pdo_mysql, tokenizer, zip, and session. You need Apache with mod_rewrite or Nginx, SSH access, and Composer for command-line extension management.
Supported database minimums are MySQL 5.7 or 8.0.30 and newer, MariaDB 10.3 and newer, SQLite 3.35.0 and newer, or PostgreSQL 10.0 and newer. For new deployments, the documentation recommends MySQL 8.4 LTS, MariaDB 11.8 LTS, or PostgreSQL 15–17.
Interpreting conflicting RAM advice
A community forum report describes smooth operation for a small team on 1 GB of RAM, and one third-party guide lists 1 GB or more. Other comparison pages claim 512 MB is enough, while another gives 2–4 CPU cores and 4–8 GB of RAM. Because these figures describe different traffic levels, extensions, and hosting setups, none should be treated as an official minimum. Start with a swap-enabled 1–2 GB test VPS for a small installation, watch peak memory during Composer operations and backups, and increase the allocation before the system begins swapping continuously.

Operational trade-offs
- PHP and a conventional web server are familiar to many VPS administrators.
- You can choose among MySQL, MariaDB, SQLite, and PostgreSQL, which helps when a database already exists on the server.
- Extensions add capabilities but also add update and compatibility work; review each extension before upgrading Flarum or PHP.
NodeBB: real-time behavior with a Node.js stack
NodeBB is a strong candidate for communities that value live updates and a responsive, application-like experience. Its deployment model is more involved than a traditional PHP forum because you operate Node.js and a separate data service.
Required versions and data services
The current README specifies Node.js 22 or newer, plus either MongoDB 5 or newer or Redis 7.2 or newer. Redis is required for clustering. Docker is optional. A cached copy of the README lists Node.js 20 or newer, so check the current release documentation at installation time rather than relying on an archived page.
Installation flow
- Provision a supported 64-bit Linux VPS, create a non-root deployment account, and install the Node.js version required by the current release.
- Clone the NodeBB repository using the current project instructions and enter the application directory.
- Run
./nodebb setup. The setup wizard asks for the database connection, creates the administrator account, and lets you set the listening port; the default port is 4567. - Start the application with the NodeBB start command documented for your release, then place it behind a reverse proxy for TLS and the public domain.
- Configure the process to restart after a reboot and verify that the database and uploaded assets are included in your backup plan.
RAM guidance and installation peaks
NodeBB does not publish an official RAM requirement in the README. A VPS provider lists 1,024 MB as a requirement, while an older tutorial warns that installing dependencies may need more than 512 MB and recommends swap. Those are environmental observations, not guarantees. A 1–2 GB VPS can be a reasonable trial for a small community, but measure memory during npm dependency installation, upgrades, and indexing rather than checking only idle usage.
When NodeBB makes sense
- You prefer JavaScript and Node.js operations over PHP.
- You need Redis-backed clustering or real-time behavior.
- You are prepared to monitor both the application process and the MongoDB or Redis service.
MyBB and phpBB: conventional forum software
MyBB
MyBB is open-source, self-hosted forum software often positioned as a cost-effective choice for organizations and businesses. The available technical material does not establish current CPU, RAM, or disk requirements. Plan a small PHP test deployment, enable monitoring, and size from observed peaks after installing your intended theme and plugins.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
phpBB
phpBB is a mature, free platform with the familiar bulletin-board model. Community discussions describe phpBB and SMF as stable and functional. This material also does not provide a current hardware baseline, so do not copy a RAM figure from an unrelated hosting plan. Its conventional PHP architecture may be easier to fit into an existing web-hosting stack than a Docker or Node.js application, but extension quality and maintenance still determine the real workload.

Why choose one of these older-style platforms
- You want classic categories, forums, threads, and user groups rather than a discourse-style conversation stream.
- You already maintain PHP, a web server, and a relational database.
- You value a familiar moderation workflow and do not need the larger real-time application stack.
Side-by-side technical comparison
| Platform | Official or documented baseline | Database and cache | Install model | RAM evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Discourse | 1 GB RAM with swap minimum; dual core recommended; 10 GB disk. Email, DNS, TLS, and backups are part of the deployment
SMTP email
Plan an SMTP service for every option. Account activation, password resets, moderation notices, and other transactional messages depend on reliable outbound mail. This is a practical dependency reported for all three primary platforms; for Discourse specifically, the claim comes from third-party guidance rather than a formal statement in the official installation documentation. Configure SPF, DKIM, and a valid sending domain where your mail provider supports them, then test delivery to multiple mailbox providers.
Domain and HTTPS
Point the forum’s DNS record to the VPS before inviting users. Put Flarum or NodeBB behind a web server or reverse proxy that handles TLS; Discourse’s installer configures its containerized web entry point. Test both the canonical hostname and redirects from HTTP before opening registration.
Backups
Back up the database and uploaded files separately, retain at least one copy outside the VPS, and perform a restore rehearsal. A snapshot of a running virtual machine is not a substitute for an application-aware database backup. Include configuration files, secrets, custom themes, and extension lists so a rebuild does not lose the forum’s identity.
Updates and security
Subscribe to release notices for the forum, runtime, database, and operating system. Apply security updates in a staging copy when possible. Before a major upgrade, confirm that your extensions support the target version, take a fresh backup, and reserve enough disk and RAM for temporary build files.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical VPS sizing method
- Start with the documented floor. For Discourse, distinguish the 1 GB minimum from the official 2 GB-plus cloud recommendation. For Flarum and NodeBB, record the absence of an official RAM figure instead of treating a vendor listing as a guarantee.
- Add operating-system headroom. Leave memory for SSH, the web server or reverse proxy, monitoring, log rotation, and swap metadata.
- Install your real extensions. Themes, search, image handling, analytics, and moderation plugins can change memory and disk use substantially.
- Measure peak operations. Watch RAM, swap-in activity, CPU load, disk latency, and database growth during installation, backups, upgrades, and a representative import.
- Load-test before launch. Use representative authenticated and anonymous requests, uploads, and notification traffic. Record the point at which response times or swap activity become unacceptable.
- Resize before symptoms become incidents. A forum that is constantly swapping may appear available while registrations, searches, and moderation actions become unreliable.
A trial VPS is especially important for Flarum and NodeBB because published sizing claims conflict. Capture your measurements with the exact PHP extensions, Node.js release, database engine, plugins, and traffic pattern you intend to operate.

Choosing by VPS size and community stage
About 1 GB
Use this only for a small test or very small community. Flarum, NodeBB, or MyBB are safer candidates on paper than Discourse, but installation peaks can still exceed available memory. Enable swap, avoid a heavy control panel, and keep backups and monitoring lightweight.
Recommended Free Tools
About 2 GB
This gives Flarum or NodeBB more practical headroom and matches Discourse’s official cloud starting recommendation, though Discourse builds and plugins may still benefit from a temporary or permanent upgrade. Keep database growth and uploaded media under review.
About 4 GB or more
This is the sensible starting class for a feature-heavy Discourse community and provides room for a database, cache, background jobs, and operational tools. It is not a promise of unlimited capacity; active users, search, uploads, and extensions determine when to scale again.
Decision checklist
- Choose Discourse when maturity and integrated community features outweigh Docker and memory overhead.
- Choose Flarum when you want a modern PHP forum on a smaller server and are willing to validate extensions and RAM usage yourself.
- Choose NodeBB when Node.js, live behavior, and Redis or MongoDB fit your operational skills.
- Choose MyBB or phpBB when a classic forum structure and an existing PHP environment matter more than newer application patterns.
Whichever project you select, make the first milestone a recoverable deployment: domain and TLS working, SMTP tested, administrator access protected, backups restored on a separate test instance, and resource metrics collecting before public registration opens.
