The most useful VPS stack for 2026 is a small, maintainable set of services rather than a pile of containers: Caddy or Traefik for HTTPS routing, Vaultwarden for passwords, Nextcloud for files and collaboration, Jellyfin for personal media, and Uptime Kuma for monitoring. Deploy only the services you will maintain, keep persistent data outside containers, pin application versions, and test restores before trusting the VPS with important data.
This guide explains what each app does, which deployment path fits a typical VPS, how the services fit together, and the operational decisions that matter more than a popularity ranking. The shortlist is a practical starting point; it is not a verified league table of every self-hosted project available in 2026.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

What a self-hosted VPS actually makes you responsible for
A VPS gives you a continuously running server and network address, but it does not remove the work normally handled by a hosted provider. You are responsible for operating-system updates, application patches, firewall rules, TLS certificates, DNS, database maintenance, backups, restore testing, storage capacity and incident response. If a password database or family photo library matters, availability and recovery are your responsibility even when the application itself is free.
Docker and Compose make installation repeatable, but containers are not backups. A recreated container can be useful after a failure only when its bind mounts or volumes, configuration and databases are stored safely elsewhere. Plan the data layout before starting the first stack.

- Use a domain or subdomains so each service has a stable HTTPS address.
- Expose as little as possible. Let one reverse proxy receive web traffic and keep databases and internal services on private Docker networks.
- Pin versions. A floating
latesttag can change independently of your maintenance window. - Keep an inventory. Record image tags, environment variables, mounted paths, DNS records, firewall rules and backup locations.
- Practice recovery. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.
The practical shortlist
| App | Primary job | Why it earns a place on a VPS | Important operating concern |
|---|---|---|---|
| Caddy | Reverse proxy and automatic HTTPS | Simple domain-based configuration and automatic certificate management | DNS must point to the server; ports 80 and 443 must be reachable; data storage must persist |
| Traefik | Reverse proxy and automatic HTTPS | Discovers Docker services from labels, which suits frequently changing Compose stacks | Requires a correctly configured Docker provider and carefully reviewed labels |
| Vaultwarden | Password manager server compatible with Bitwarden clients | Small, focused service for sharing credentials across supported clients | It is an unofficial Bitwarden-compatible implementation; patching, HTTPS and backups are essential |
| Nextcloud | Files, synchronization and collaboration | Centralizes documents and shared workspaces under your control | More components and storage planning than a small utility; choose the right deployment model |
| Jellyfin | Personal media library and streaming | Turns your own media collection into a web and client-accessible service | Storage, bandwidth and possible video transcoding determine the real workload |
| Uptime Kuma | Service and endpoint monitoring | Shows whether your applications and public endpoints are reachable | Monitoring on the same VPS cannot detect every VPS-level outage |
The first two rows are alternatives, not two mandatory applications. Select one reverse proxy, then place the application containers behind it. The remaining four can be introduced gradually.
Choose the reverse proxy before publishing applications
A reverse proxy gives each service a hostname, terminates HTTPS and forwards requests to the appropriate container. It is the boundary between the public internet and your internal Compose networks, so configure it before publishing a password manager or file service.

Caddy serves a configured domain over HTTPS automatically when the domain’s DNS points at the VPS and ports 80 and 443 are reachable from the internet. It also needs a writable, persistent data directory for certificates and runtime state. In a Compose deployment, mount that directory outside the container so a replacement container does not lose its certificate data.
The configuration style is a Caddyfile. A typical workflow is:
- Create DNS records for the hostnames you intend to use and wait for them to resolve to the VPS.
- Allow inbound TCP 80 and 443 in the VPS firewall and any provider-level firewall.
- Start Caddy with persistent mounts for its configuration and data directories.
- Add one site block per application, forwarding the hostname to the service name and internal port on the shared Docker network.
- Inspect Caddy’s logs and open the hostname in a private browser window to confirm certificate issuance and proxying.
Caddy is a strong default when you want a readable, centralized configuration and a relatively small number of services. Keep the Caddyfile in version control, but do not commit private keys or secrets.

Traefik: label-driven routing for Compose stacks
Traefik discovers Docker containers through labels after the Docker provider is enabled in its static configuration. Instead of adding routes to a central file, you attach routing, entrypoint, TLS and service-port labels to each application service. This is convenient when stacks are added or removed often, because the route travels with the Compose definition.
- Enable
providers.dockerin Traefik’s static configuration. - Give Traefik access to the Docker socket using a security-conscious design; restrict the socket’s exposure and permissions rather than publishing it broadly.
- Attach Traefik and application containers to a shared proxy network.
- Add labels that define the hostname rule, HTTPS entrypoint, certificate resolver and internal service port.
- Deploy the stack, then inspect Traefik’s dashboard or logs to verify that the router and service were discovered.
Traefik is a good fit for a multi-stack environment where each Compose project owns its labels. Its flexibility also makes mis-typed labels harder to diagnose than a short Caddyfile, so keep a known-good example and review every public route.
Caddy or Traefik?
| Decision point | Caddy | Traefik |
|---|---|---|
| Configuration | Central Caddyfile | Docker labels plus static provider configuration |
| TLS | Automatic when DNS and ports 80/443 are correctly set | Automatic TLS is available, but certificate resolver and entrypoint labels must be configured |
| Best fit | A small, stable set of services and a configuration you want to read in one place | Many Compose stacks that should self-describe their routes |
| Main failure mode | Incorrect hostname, DNS or upstream target in the Caddyfile | Provider disabled, wrong labels, wrong network or wrong internal port |
Do not run both as public entry points unless you have a specific design for port ownership and traffic flow. One proxy listening on 80 and 443 is easier to secure and troubleshoot.
Vaultwarden: a focused password service
Vaultwarden is an unofficial, Bitwarden-compatible server written in Rust. That compatibility lets supported Bitwarden clients connect to a self-hosted endpoint, but it does not make Vaultwarden an official Bitwarden server. Treat it as security-sensitive software: follow releases, apply patches promptly, protect the administrator interface and maintain encrypted, tested backups.
Database choices
Since Vaultwarden v1.17.0, the single image supports SQLite, MySQL and PostgreSQL backends. Choose based on scale and the rest of your stack rather than assuming that every installation needs a separate database server.

| Backend | Practical fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| SQLite | One small user base with modest concurrent activity | Fewest moving parts, but the database is a file that must be included in consistent backups |
| MySQL | A larger installation or an environment already standardized on MySQL-compatible operations | Separate database service, credentials and backup procedure |
| PostgreSQL | A larger installation or a stack already operated with PostgreSQL | Separate database service, credentials and backup procedure |
Deployment sequence
- Choose a dedicated hostname and put the Vaultwarden container on the private network behind your selected reverse proxy.
- Prepare a persistent data path for the Vaultwarden database, attachments and configuration.
- Set the public server URL to the final HTTPS hostname before inviting users or importing a vault.
- Use the reverse proxy for HTTPS. The web vault requires HTTPS and a secure browser context; exposing the container directly over plain HTTP is not an acceptable production setup.
- Create the administrator credential. A 2026 setup guide recommends storing the admin token as an Argon2id hash rather than plain text; apply that pattern instead of leaving a reusable secret in a Compose file.
- Log in with a supported client, create a test item and confirm that synchronization works from a second client before migrating the complete vault.
- Back up the persistent data and database, then perform a restore to a temporary instance so you know the backup contains everything required.
Operational safeguards
- Restrict administrator access and remove any public route you do not need.
- Keep the image and operating system patched; compatibility does not remove the obligation to track Vaultwarden releases.
- Back up attachments as well as the database. A database-only backup can omit encrypted file data associated with vault items.
- Document the server URL, database type, mounted paths and recovery credentials in an offline runbook.
Nextcloud: files and collaboration with two deployment paths
Nextcloud is the most component-heavy choice in this shortlist. It can provide synchronized files and collaboration features, but a reliable installation requires more planning for PHP, a database, Redis, background jobs, storage and the reverse proxy than a single-purpose utility.
Official Docker image: more control, more wiring
The official image path gives you direct control over the web container, database, Redis and Compose networking. That is useful when your VPS already has a reverse proxy or when you need to fit Nextcloud into an existing backup and monitoring design. The cost is manual integration: you must connect the services, set trusted domains, configure background jobs and maintain each component.
AIO: bundled components with a proxy assumption
The all-in-one deployment bundles more of the setup into a guided arrangement. Its instructions assume that no web server or reverse proxy is already present. If your VPS already runs Caddy or Traefik, follow the alternative AIO path intended for an existing proxy rather than binding AIO directly to ports that the proxy owns. Port conflicts are a design problem to solve before deployment, not an error to ignore after launch.
Pin a verified image tag
Nextcloud’s published tags are not identical across every page. At the time covered by this guide, Docker Hub listed 35.0.1 as the latest Apache tag, with 34.x and 33.x still supported, while the GitHub releases page showed 34.0.0 as the default channel. Because those snapshots differ, check the current tags on the registry and release page immediately before choosing a version, then pin the selected tag instead of deploying an unexamined latest.

- Decide whether the official image or the AIO path matches your existing proxy and operating model.
- Allocate persistent storage for user files, the database, application configuration and any cache or preview data you intend to retain.
- Place the database and Redis on private networks; expose only the web endpoint through Caddy or Traefik.
- Set the final HTTPS hostname and trusted-domain configuration before users begin uploading files.
- Configure background jobs using the method recommended for your chosen image, then verify that scheduled tasks actually run.
- Test uploads, downloads, desktop synchronization and a database backup before onboarding a larger group.
- Record the exact image tags and restore order: database, application configuration, then user files and auxiliary data.
There is no verified universal RAM number that guarantees a good Nextcloud experience. Demand changes with user count, file previews, search, office collaboration, database activity and concurrent synchronization. Measure memory and disk I/O under your workload, leave headroom for updates and avoid treating a small demonstration installation as a production sizing baseline.

Jellyfin: stream the media you already own
Jellyfin is a natural VPS candidate when your media library is stored on attached or mounted storage and you want browser or client access away from home. The application itself is only one part of the design: the media path, metadata cache, network egress and video-transcoding workload determine whether the VPS is suitable.
Plan storage and playback first
- Mount the media library read-only where practical, and keep Jellyfin’s configuration and metadata on persistent writable storage.
- Estimate outbound bandwidth for the number of simultaneous viewers and the bitrate of the source files.
- Prefer direct play when clients support the source format. Transcoding can consume substantially more CPU than direct streaming.
- If remote access is required, publish Jellyfin through the same reverse proxy and HTTPS boundary as the other applications.
- Back up configuration and metadata separately from the media files; recreating a container should not erase library organization.
Jellyfin hardware requirements are workload-dependent rather than a single reliable VPS number. A library used by one compatible client is a different problem from several remote viewers requiring concurrent video conversion. Monitor CPU, memory, storage latency and network transfer while testing representative files.

Uptime Kuma provides a clear operational view of HTTP endpoints and other checks you define. Put it behind the reverse proxy and create monitors for the public hostnames, the login page or a lightweight health endpoint, and any critical internal service that can be checked without exposing it publicly.
- Deploy Uptime Kuma with persistent storage for its monitor definitions and history.
- Create an administrator account and protect the route with HTTPS.
- Add monitors one at a time, starting with the reverse proxy and the most important application.
- Configure notifications and trigger a deliberate test so you know alerts reach you.
- Use an external monitoring point for VPS-level outages. A monitor running on the same VPS cannot report when the VPS, its network or its provider is unavailable.
Monitoring is useful only when alerts are actionable. Start with availability and certificate-expiry signals, then add deeper checks after you understand the normal behavior of each service.

- Harden the VPS. Apply operating-system updates, configure a firewall, create a non-root administrative path and enable provider-level access controls where available.
- Install one reverse proxy. Verify DNS, ports 80/443, certificate issuance and persistent proxy data before adding application routes.
- Add monitoring. Configure Uptime Kuma and an external notification destination while the stack is still small.
- Deploy Vaultwarden. Confirm HTTPS, client synchronization and a tested backup before storing the primary password vault.
- Add Nextcloud. Choose the official image or AIO path based on the proxy you already operate, then test file sync and restores.
- Add Jellyfin last. Measure storage, bandwidth and transcoding behavior with real media before opening remote access.
Resource planning without misleading RAM promises
Self-hosting guides often quote a single memory figure, but the available evidence does not establish a universal requirement for this stack. A useful plan starts with workload questions:
- How many people will use each service concurrently?
- Will Nextcloud generate previews, search indexes or collaborative documents?
- Will Jellyfin transcode, and how many streams might overlap?
- Will the database share the VPS with other workloads?
- How much space is needed for user data, metadata, logs, temporary files and at least one local backup copy?
Begin with a measurable baseline, watch memory pressure, swap activity, CPU saturation, disk latency and network transfer, then resize before failures occur. Reserve capacity for package updates, database maintenance and temporary files. Storage reliability and backup capacity can be more important than raw CPU for a file-heavy installation.
Backups, updates and recovery
Back up data, not just containers
For every application, identify persistent mounts and databases. Back up the data while the service is in a consistent state, encrypt copies in transit and at rest, keep a copy outside the VPS provider, and retain enough history to recover from accidental deletion or a bad update. Containers can be downloaded again; application data and secrets often cannot.
Use a maintenance rhythm
- Weekly: review failed monitors, disk usage, container logs and pending security updates.
- Before each upgrade: record the current image tag, export or snapshot the database as appropriate, verify free space and read the release notes for breaking changes.
- After each upgrade: test login, a representative read/write action, background jobs and notifications.
- Monthly: restore at least one backup to an isolated location, review firewall and DNS records, and remove unused images and credentials.
- After a major change: update the runbook with the new image tags, routes, mounts, secrets location and restore order.
Which combination should you choose?
For a small personal VPS
Use Caddy, Vaultwarden and Uptime Kuma first. Add Nextcloud only when you have a clear file-sync need and enough storage and maintenance time. Add Jellyfin when the VPS’s storage and network plan matches your media workload.
For several Compose projects
Traefik can keep routing rules beside each Compose project through Docker labels. Establish naming, network and label conventions before the number of projects grows, and make the proxy’s static provider configuration part of the same documented deployment.
For a team file workspace
Choose Nextcloud deliberately. The official image is more adaptable when you already operate a proxy and separate services; AIO is more bundled but requires the existing-proxy alternative when Caddy or Traefik already owns the web ports.
For a password-first deployment
Deploy Vaultwarden alone behind HTTPS, select SQLite for a genuinely small user base or MySQL/PostgreSQL when your scale and operational standards justify a separate database, and prove the restore process before importing sensitive credentials.
Bottom line
A dependable 2026 self-hosted VPS is built around operations, not the number of containers. Pick one reverse proxy, secure its public boundary, add Vaultwarden, Nextcloud, Jellyfin and Uptime Kuma only as your needs justify them, and treat patching, backups, monitoring and restore tests as part of every application’s installation.
