Samsung Bespoke AI Family Hub refrigerators are the strongest security-led choice documented here. Eligible 2024-and-newer Wi‑Fi appliances can receive up to seven years of software updates, 2024-and-newer four-door Family Hub models have UL Solutions Diamond IoT-security verification, and Samsung describes hardware-isolated Knox protections plus Knox Matrix monitoring. LG ThinQ and InstaView refrigerators are the better alternative when remote controls, alerts, diagnostics and wireless feature updates matter more than a published refrigerator-specific security certification.
Every connected refrigerator adds an account, home-network connection and cloud services to an appliance that previously had none of those attack surfaces. Use the exact model number, country and current firmware to verify support before buying.

Why refrigerator security deserves the same attention as other smart-home devices
A connected refrigerator is a network client with firmware, credentials, sensors and cloud integrations. A compromise could expose account information, reveal household routines through door or camera data, or become a foothold on a poorly segmented home network. The practical risk depends on the model’s implementation and your setup, but the buying questions are consistent.
- How are secrets protected? Look for a hardware security boundary or a clearly described key-storage design, not only a generic statement that the appliance is “smart.”
- How long will it receive fixes? A refrigerator can remain in a kitchen for a decade, so a documented update policy is more useful than a launch-date promise with no duration.
- What data leaves the home? Cameras, voice services, food-recognition features and diagnostics can require cloud processing and an account.
- Can you turn services off? The appliance should continue basic cooling when internet features are disabled, while the buyer understands which conveniences disappear.
- How does it fit your smart home? Standards such as Matter and Thread can reduce ecosystem friction, but compatibility still depends on the exact appliance and platform.
Samsung Family Hub security features explained
Knox Vault isolates sensitive credentials
Samsung describes Knox Vault as a physically isolated hardware environment for sensitive information. On supported appliances, encryption keys and authentication data can be stored on a separate security chip rather than in the refrigerator’s general-purpose software environment. Physical isolation is valuable because it is intended to make extraction of credentials harder even if another part of the appliance is attacked.

Knox is a platform description, not a guarantee that every feature or every regional model has identical hardware. Confirm that the specific refrigerator listing identifies the supported Knox capability.
Knox Matrix monitors connected appliances
Knox Matrix is Samsung’s approach to monitoring and protecting a network of connected devices. Samsung describes three elements: Trust Chain, Cross Platform and Credential Sync. Together they are intended to help devices verify one another, protect communication across platforms and encrypt shared credentials or data.
Samsung introduced Credential Sync on the 2024 Bespoke 4-Door refrigerator with AI Family Hub. That detail matters when comparing an older Family Hub model with a current one: the product family name alone does not establish that every generation includes the same controls.
UL Solutions Diamond verification is model-bounded
Samsung states that its 2024-and-newer FDR Family Hub refrigerators received UL Solutions’ Diamond-grade IoT-security verification, described by Samsung as the first rating of that level for a home appliance. The statement applies to the identified FDR Family Hub group and model years; it should not be generalized to all Samsung refrigerators or to appliances sold in every country.
Samsung’s update commitment has conditions
Samsung says Wi‑Fi-enabled home appliances launched from 2024 are eligible for software updates for up to seven years. “Up to” is important: eligibility, the starting point, the specific update channel and the end date can vary by model and market. Ask support for the exact model’s security-update policy before paying a premium for connected features.
Family Hub convenience requires an account and Wi‑Fi
Samsung AI Home network services and apps require Wi‑Fi and a Samsung account. If you disable connectivity, cooling and other core refrigerator functions remain the appliance’s purpose, but network-dependent services and apps stop working. Decide whether the screen, app access and integrations justify maintaining that account and cloud connection for the refrigerator’s expected lifetime.

What LG ThinQ and InstaView offer
Remote control and alerts
LG documents smartphone and voice control on supported models, including temperature adjustment, ice-production controls, vacation mode and door-open notifications. ThinQ can also send temperature alerts, which are useful when a door is left open or the appliance reports an abnormal condition.
Diagnostics and maintenance information
ThinQ supports Smart Diagnosis on compatible appliances and can provide proactive maintenance or diagnostic information. It can monitor filter-replacement status where the model exposes that data. InstaView pages describe Wi‑Fi-based remote management of temperature, ice production and diagnostics.

Wireless updates are selective
LG says wireless feature updates are available on select appliances. The reviewed LG information does not publish a universal refrigerator software-support duration, so do not assume a fixed number of years. Obtain the model’s support statement and ask whether security fixes continue after feature updates end.
Privacy and certification questions remain model-specific
Some InstaView refrigerators offer interior viewing or other sensors. Check whether a camera is present, what activates it, which app permissions are required and whether the feature can be disabled. LG’s reviewed pages do not state a refrigerator-specific security certification comparable to Samsung’s cited UL Solutions rating; that is an evidence gap, not proof that the appliance is insecure.
Smart-home interoperability: Matter, Thread and voice platforms
Interoperability can affect security because it determines how many accounts and bridges you must maintain. Samsung’s Matter explanation describes device attestation and operational certificates, which are mechanisms for verifying a device and establishing trusted operation within a Matter ecosystem. Compatibility still depends on the refrigerator model and the controller you use.
LG documents a dashboard for compatible Matter and Thread devices on its SIGNATURE platform. A refrigerator may support only a subset of functions through a third-party platform, so verify whether the integration exposes temperature, door status, ice controls or merely an on/off state. Also check compatibility with SmartThings, Alexa or Google Assistant before assuming that a voice routine will work.

How to choose a secure model before purchase
- Record the complete model number. Include the suffix that identifies capacity, door configuration, screen and country. Security and update eligibility can differ between apparently similar listings.
- Verify the update policy in writing. For Samsung, ask whether the appliance qualifies for the up-to-seven-year statement and when that period begins. For LG, ask for the expected security-support term because a universal duration was not published in the reviewed material.
- List the features you will actually use. Remote temperature checks, door alerts and diagnostics may justify connectivity; an unused camera or entertainment screen adds data collection without a practical benefit.
- Check account requirements. Samsung AI Home services require a Samsung account and Wi‑Fi. Ask the seller or manufacturer what account, subscription or regional restrictions apply to the LG features you want.
- Compare physical ownership costs. Capacity, door layout, ice mechanism, water-filter compatibility, warranty and local service coverage can matter more than a screen. Replacement filters are a recurring expense, and compatibility must match the exact model.
- Confirm ecosystem support. Verify Matter, Thread, SmartThings, Alexa or Google Assistant support for the refrigerator itself, not merely for another appliance in the same product family.
- Review privacy controls. Look for camera shutters or disable settings, microphone controls, data-sharing choices and a way to delete or revoke the account.
Secure setup checklist after installation
- Update the router first. Install current router firmware, use WPA3 or WPA2 with a strong unique passphrase, and disable obsolete encryption modes.
- Create a separate IoT network when practical. A guest or IoT network limits lateral movement if the refrigerator or another smart device is compromised. Make sure the network still permits the app or hub functions you need.
- Use a unique manufacturer account password. Enable two-factor authentication or a passkey if the account offers it. Never reuse the password from email, banking or your primary cloud account.
- Install the refrigerator’s current firmware. Use the manufacturer app or the appliance’s update control, then record the firmware version and date. Recheck periodically rather than assuming automatic updates are enabled.
- Minimize permissions. Allow only the phone, voice assistant and smart-home services you use. Disable contact, location, microphone or camera access when a feature does not need it.
- Turn off unused connected features. If you do not use interior viewing, voice control or entertainment services, disable them and review whether the appliance still makes outbound connections.
- Protect physical access. Set a screen lock where available, restrict who can add accounts and remove the appliance from the account before selling or returning it.
- Plan replacement. Keep the model number, filter specification, warranty and support contact. If security support ends, disconnect cloud functions and retain only the offline features that remain useful.
AI cameras and food recognition: useful, but not essential
Samsung says AI Vision Inside could recognize 37 fresh-food items as of April 2025. That is a manufacturer claim limited to supported items that are visible and unobscured; it is not a promise that every food, container or shopping list will be identified accurately.
Camera-based inventory can reduce manual tracking, but it also creates another sensor and another reason to keep the refrigerator connected. Before enabling it, check where images or metadata are processed, who can access the account, how long records are retained and whether the camera can be disabled without affecting cooling.
Troubleshooting common security and connectivity problems
The refrigerator will not join Wi‑Fi
- Confirm the network uses a supported band and encryption mode; some appliances do not support every modern router setting.
- Move the refrigerator or access point temporarily to rule out signal strength and interference.
- Check that the router is not blocking the manufacturer’s cloud domains or required outbound traffic.
- Update the appliance and app over a temporary trusted network, then return it to the segmented IoT network.
Remote alerts stopped arriving
- Check that the appliance is online and that the app is signed in to the account originally paired with it.
- Review phone notification permissions, battery-saver restrictions and the app’s alert settings.
- Verify that a firmware update or router change did not reset the notification preference.
You are replacing or giving away the refrigerator
- Remove personal photos, shopping lists, voice profiles and saved networks.
- Sign out of the Samsung or LG account and revoke the appliance from the account dashboard.
- Perform the manufacturer’s factory reset and confirm that the screen no longer shows your profile.
- Change any smart-home credentials that were shared with the appliance.
Verdict
Choose a Samsung Bespoke AI Family Hub model when documented security architecture, a refrigerator-specific UL Solutions Diamond verification and a potentially seven-year update window are your highest priorities. Select an LG ThinQ or InstaView model when its remote controls, alerts, diagnostics or maintenance tools better fit your kitchen and you have confirmed the model’s support term. In either case, security depends on the exact model, current firmware, a hardened home network and disciplined account and privacy settings.
