RustDesk is the strongest documented alternative when Linux security means open source plus the option to run your own rendezvous and relay infrastructure. Its documentation covers Linux clients, self-hosted ID and relay servers, and peer-to-peer end-to-end encryption based on NaCl. That control comes with real operational work: you must deploy, secure, monitor, and update the server as well as the endpoint clients.

AnyDesk remains the simpler vendor-operated model. Its Linux product page advertises support for multiple distributions and claims TLS 1.3 and RSA 2048, but those are AnyDesk’s published specifications rather than the result of an independent audit. NoMachine, Chrome Remote Desktop, and X2Go are reasonable candidates for specific Linux environments, yet current published information does not establish their current distro coverage, display-server behavior, or unattended-access controls well enough for a universal ranking.

At a glance: which alternative fits your Linux setup?

Option Best fit Who controls the infrastructure? Published security information Administration burden
RustDesk Teams and individuals who want open-source software and a self-hosting option You can use a hosted service or operate your own ID and relay servers RustDesk documentation describes peer-to-peer end-to-end encryption based on NaCl; this is a product-documentation claim, not independent validation Low for a basic client deployment; moderate to high when you self-host, secure, and maintain servers
AnyDesk Readers who prefer a vendor-operated service and a familiar workflow AnyDesk operates the service infrastructure AnyDesk’s Linux page claims TLS 1.3 and RSA 2048 Usually lower than self-hosting, but package and distribution compatibility still require checking
NoMachine People comparing established desktop-access software Vendor-operated model; current infrastructure details are not stated A secondary search result reports encrypted traffic; detailed primary security controls were not stated Not stated in the available material; confirm current host, licensing, and unattended-access requirements
Chrome Remote Desktop Users comfortable with a hosted ecosystem Hosted through Google’s service infrastructure No primary security detail is currently stated for this comparison Verify current Linux host support and administrative controls before deployment
X2Go Linux-to-Linux graphical sessions where additional configuration is acceptable Typically operator-managed session infrastructure The cited institutional comparison is not detailed security documentation Validate the current protocol, client, desktop, and session prerequisites

The most important distinction is not a marketing label such as “secure.” It is whether a third party brokers the connection or your organization owns the servers that identify and relay sessions. That choice affects trust, incident response, maintenance, and the amount of Linux administration your team must perform.

What a secure AnyDesk replacement must prove

Infrastructure trust

A vendor-operated service places the identity directory, rendezvous process, and any relay path under the vendor’s control. You benefit from a managed service, but you must evaluate the vendor’s security documentation, account controls, update process, and data-handling terms. A self-hosted design moves those functions to infrastructure you control. It can reduce dependence on a third-party broker, but it also makes your team responsible for the server’s operating system, network exposure, credentials, backups, logging, and patching.

Encryption claims versus verified assurance

RustDesk’s documentation describes peer-to-peer end-to-end encryption using NaCl. AnyDesk’s Linux page publishes TLS 1.3 and RSA 2048 claims. These statements tell you what the products say they implement; they do not constitute an independent, side-by-side security audit. No independent comparative audit, population statistic, or named expert assessment is published, so neither product should be described as “unhackable” or definitively the most secure in every deployment.

Endpoint and session security

Encryption in transit does not protect a compromised Linux host, an over-privileged remote session, or credentials that have been reused elsewhere. Your decision should therefore include authentication, least-privilege permissions, unattended-access policy, operating-system updates, firewall rules, audit logs, and a recovery plan. A well-managed deployment of a less flexible tool can be safer than a poorly maintained self-hosted one.

RustDesk: the best-documented self-hosted alternative

Why it stands out for Linux

RustDesk’s official materials document a Linux client and a self-hosted ID and relay server option. The client and server are separate parts of the design: installing the desktop application on a workstation does not, by itself, give you an operator-controlled rendezvous service. You can start with the client and a hosted arrangement, then add your own server when your trust or compliance requirements justify the administration.

The documentation also describes peer-to-peer connections with end-to-end encryption based on NaCl. Treat that as a documentation claim whose practical protection depends on correct configuration, trustworthy endpoints, and the software versions you actually deploy.

What self-hosting changes

  • Control: Your organization chooses where the ID and relay services run and who can administer them.
  • Responsibility: You must deploy the server, restrict network access, protect administrative credentials, apply updates, monitor availability, and plan for backup and recovery.
  • Failure modes: A misconfigured server, expired certificate, blocked port, or lost configuration can prevent clients from finding or relaying sessions even when both Linux machines are healthy.
  • Capacity planning: Direct peer-to-peer traffic and relayed traffic have different bandwidth and latency characteristics. A relay must be sized and located for the users who depend on it.

An existing Linux machine or a virtual private server may be more practical than buying dedicated hardware. A small, dedicated Linux computer is only an optional hosting choice; no required hardware specification or universal cost advantage is published.

RustDesk deployment sequence

  1. Inventory the endpoints. Record each distribution and release, desktop environment, display server (Wayland or X11), whether the machine is normally attended, and whether it must be reachable after reboot or logout.
  2. Pilot the Linux client. Install the current RustDesk client on one non-critical host and one viewer machine using the official Linux installation instructions. Keep the pilot isolated from production credentials.
  3. Choose the trust model. Decide whether the pilot will use a hosted arrangement or your own ID and relay servers. If you self-host, treat the server as production infrastructure rather than as an unprotected utility VM.
  4. Deploy the server separately. Follow RustDesk’s current self-hosting documentation for the server components, network bindings, access controls, and client configuration. Do not assume that a client package includes a secure server configuration.
  5. Set the minimum permissions. Allow only the capabilities operators need, such as viewing, keyboard and mouse control, clipboard, or file transfer. Disable capabilities that are not part of the support workflow.
  6. Test both connection paths. Confirm a direct peer-to-peer session where the network permits it and a relayed session where it does not. Record which path is used and how the client reports failures.
  7. Test unattended recovery. Reboot the host, lock the desktop, disconnect the active user, and repeat the connection test. An attended session working once does not prove that unattended access survives a reboot or login transition.
  8. Document ownership. Write down server administrators, update responsibility, backup location, emergency access, and the procedure for revoking a lost or compromised endpoint.

RustDesk trade-offs

  • Advantages: Linux client documentation, open-source positioning, an operator-controlled server option, and a documented encryption design.
  • Costs: Self-hosting adds operating-system maintenance, network and firewall work, monitoring, and troubleshooting that a managed service normally performs for you.
  • Unknowns to verify: Current published information does not settle support across every Linux distribution, desktop environment, Wayland/X11 combination, or unattended-access scenario. Test the exact target setup.

AnyDesk as the managed-service baseline

AnyDesk’s official Linux page says its product supports a range of Linux distributions and publishes TLS 1.3 and RSA 2048 security claims. Those are useful product specifications for a reader deciding whether to stay with a vendor-operated service, but they should be attributed to AnyDesk rather than presented as an independent certification.

The managed model usually reduces infrastructure work: you do not have to deploy an ID and relay service yourself. You still need to verify that the package, repository, or installation method matches the target distribution and that the current release behaves correctly with the desktop and display server in use. Current published information does not provide a complete matrix for unattended access, Wayland, X11, or every popular Linux desktop, so those items belong in your acceptance test rather than in an assumption.

Other candidates: when they deserve a pilot

NoMachine

NoMachine appears in comparisons as an established desktop-access option, and a secondary search result reports encrypted traffic. Current primary documentation does not state detailed support for its current Linux host, encryption design, licensing, or unattended-access behavior. Consider it a candidate when its session model suits your environment, but confirm those items directly in the current vendor documentation before a rollout.

Chrome Remote Desktop

Chrome Remote Desktop is a hosted-ecosystem option for readers who are comfortable placing account and connection administration in that ecosystem. No primary security detail is currently stated for this comparison, and current published information does not establish Linux host support or the controls available to administrators. Verify the host installation path, supported desktop session, authentication policy, unattended behavior, and organizational management features before selecting it.

X2Go

X2Go is a Linux-oriented candidate for graphical sessions where additional setup is acceptable. The cited institutional comparison is not detailed security documentation. Check the current protocol and client requirements, supported desktop environments, session persistence, audio and clipboard behavior, and how the deployment is secured on your network.

Linux compatibility is a test plan, not a checkbox

Remote access can fail even when a product lists Linux support. The distribution package may install successfully while the desktop session uses a display server or permissions model that the remote tool handles differently. Wayland and X11 are particularly important variables, as are the desktop environment, login manager, graphics stack, multiple monitors, and whether a user is already logged in.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record these facts before switching

  • Distribution name and release, package architecture, and update channel
  • Desktop environment and display server (Wayland or X11)
  • Whether the host has a physical display, is headless, or uses a virtual display
  • Single-user or multi-user operation
  • Attended support only, unattended support, or both
  • Required functions: keyboard and pointer, clipboard, file transfer, audio, printing, reboot, and multi-monitor viewing
  • Firewall, proxy, VPN, and outbound-network restrictions

Acceptance tests

  1. Connect while a local user is present and confirm that the expected desktop appears.
  2. Lock the screen and verify whether the tool can show and control the lock screen as intended.
  3. Log out and back in, then repeat the test with the display server unchanged.
  4. Reboot the host and test reconnection before and after a local login.
  5. Test clipboard and file transfer separately; do not assume that video access implies those features work.
  6. Try a second monitor and a changed resolution if support staff rely on multi-display systems.
  7. Repeat from a different network so that a relay or restrictive firewall path is exercised.
  8. Record failures by distribution, desktop, display server, and client version instead of labeling the entire product incompatible.

Attended versus unattended access

Attended support means a user at the Linux machine approves or participates in the connection. Unattended access means the host remains reachable without that user present, often after a reboot or logout. The second model is more operationally valuable and more sensitive: a stolen credential can provide persistent entry to a machine.

For unattended deployments, define who may connect, when they may connect, which permissions they receive, and how access is revoked. Require a separate administrative process for enabling unattended access, keep a record of the host owner, and test the behavior after reboot and lock-screen transitions. Because current published information does not establish consistent unattended-access behavior across the alternatives, treat this as a product-and-environment test rather than a feature you infer from a product name.

Security hardening checklist

  • Limit accounts: Give remote access only to named operators or groups, not a shared account.
  • Use least privilege: Separate viewing from control and file transfer when the support task allows it.
  • Protect credentials: Store access secrets in an approved password manager, use unique values, and revoke them when staff or devices change.
  • Restrict network exposure: Permit only the outbound and inbound paths required by the chosen architecture; avoid exposing a self-hosted server broadly to the public internet.
  • Patch every layer: Update the Linux host, remote client, and self-hosted server components under a documented maintenance schedule.
  • Monitor the service: Alert on unexpected server downtime, configuration changes, and unusual connection activity.
  • Protect the host: Apply normal Linux hardening, disk encryption and screen-lock policies where appropriate, and separate remote-support privileges from full system administration.
  • Plan revocation: Know how to remove a host, rotate credentials, disable a user, and recover the server configuration after compromise.
  • Test backups: Back up self-hosted configuration and verify that a replacement server can be built without relying on undocumented steps.

A practical migration path from AnyDesk

  1. Define the requirement. List the hosts that need remote support, the people who connect, the required features, and whether self-hosting is a policy requirement or merely a preference.
  2. Choose one pilot alternative. RustDesk is the logical first pilot when open source and infrastructure control matter. Select a managed candidate instead when your team cannot own server operations.
  3. Keep the existing path during validation. Do not remove AnyDesk from production hosts until the replacement has passed attended, reboot, lock-screen, network, and permission tests.
  4. Validate the exact Linux matrix. Test every distribution, desktop environment, and display-server combination that will be supported. Record the client version and the observed connection path.
  5. Move identities and permissions deliberately. Create named operator access, assign only required capabilities, and avoid copying broad unattended permissions from the old deployment without review.
  6. Run a rollback drill. Confirm that support can still reach a host if the new relay is unavailable, then document the safe procedure for disabling the old tool and removing its credentials.
  7. Decommission cleanly. After the replacement is stable, uninstall the old client where policy requires it, revoke its access tokens or passwords, remove obsolete firewall rules, and update the asset inventory.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The client cannot find the host

First determine whether the failure is local to the endpoint or affects the ID and relay path. Check that both clients are running the intended versions, that the host has working network access, and that a self-hosted server is reachable from both sides. A firewall or proxy can block rendezvous or relay traffic even when ordinary web browsing works. If direct peer-to-peer discovery fails but a relay succeeds, investigate network policy and relay capacity rather than reinstalling the desktop client repeatedly.

The connection is established but the screen is black or input does not work

Compare the failing machine’s desktop environment and display server with the combinations that passed your pilot. Check whether the session is locked, whether a local user is logged in, and whether the remote client has been granted the required control permissions. Treat Wayland/X11 differences as a first diagnostic branch; do not assume that a successful attended X11 session proves an unattended Wayland session will behave the same way.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Unattended access stops after reboot

Verify that the remote service starts at the required point in the boot and login sequence, that the host can reach the ID or relay service before a user logs in, and that the desktop session exposes the expected display. Recheck the host’s permission policy and credentials after a package update. If the product cannot provide the required pre-login behavior on that distribution and desktop, classify the setup as attended-only rather than weakening host security to force it.

Performance is inconsistent

Measure whether the session is direct or relayed, then compare latency and bandwidth from the two networks involved. A relay located far from the endpoints or operating under constrained bandwidth can make an otherwise healthy client feel slow. Reduce nonessential visual or file-transfer activity during diagnosis and confirm that the host is not CPU- or memory-constrained by another workload.

Decision framework

If your priority is… Start with… Why What to verify before rollout
Open-source software and control of rendezvous infrastructure RustDesk with a self-hosted server Its official materials document Linux clients, self-hosting, and NaCl-based end-to-end encryption Server hardening, maintenance ownership, exact distro/desktop support, and unattended behavior
Minimal server administration A vendor-operated service such as AnyDesk The vendor runs the service infrastructure, and AnyDesk publishes Linux support plus TLS 1.3 and RSA 2048 claims Current package compatibility, account controls, display-server behavior, and the vendor’s current security documentation
A familiar alternative already considered by your team NoMachine, Chrome Remote Desktop, or X2Go pilot Each is a plausible candidate for a particular workflow Do not rely on generic rankings; confirm current Linux host support, security controls, session requirements, and unattended access directly

For most Linux readers who specifically asked for a secure AnyDesk replacement, begin with a RustDesk pilot. Choose self-hosting only when you are prepared to operate the infrastructure that makes the trust model meaningful. If that operational burden is outside your team’s scope, a managed service may be the safer practical decision, provided its current Linux behavior and security controls meet your requirements.
