For most independent deployments, ONLYOFFICE Docs is the clearest secure alternative to Collabora CODE in Nextcloud. Its official connector supports a document server on the same machine or a separate host, real-time co-editing, group-based editor restrictions, external-storage controls, watermarks, and JWT-authenticated communication. If you prefer the first-party Nextcloud path, Nextcloud Office powered by Euro-Office is the default office solution documented for Nextcloud 35 and edits text documents, spreadsheets, and presentations in real time.
Choose based on your file formats, collaboration controls, and operating model rather than on the word “secure” alone. Both options can keep document traffic under your control, but TLS validation, authentication secrets, network reachability, file locking, updates, and backups determine whether the deployment is actually private and reliable.
Which alternative should you choose?
There are two practical paths documented for current Nextcloud installations: Nextcloud Office powered by Euro-Office, and an independently deployed ONLYOFFICE Docs server connected through the official Nextcloud integration. Nextcloud documentation describes Nextcloud Office as its default solution; the same documentation lists Collabora Online, based on CODE, as a supported alternative. For a reader specifically replacing CODE, the relevant choices are therefore the first-party Nextcloud Office service or a separate ONLYOFFICE Docs deployment.

What “secure” means in a Nextcloud office editor
Self-hosting changes where files and editing traffic are processed; it does not automatically provide confidentiality. A secure design has several independent properties:
- Transport protection: Browser-to-Nextcloud and Nextcloud-to-editor connections use TLS, with certificate verification enabled.
- Authenticated integration: The connector proves that requests come from the intended Nextcloud instance. ONLYOFFICE uses a JWT secret for this purpose.
- Least privilege: Only approved groups can open the editor, and administrators decide whether files in external storages may be edited.
- Controlled data paths: A document server should be reachable only through the addresses and reverse-proxy routes it needs, not exposed broadly to the internet.
- Change integrity: Users should not edit one file simultaneously in multiple office tools, because one tool can overwrite or lose another tool’s changes.
- Operational recovery: Nextcloud files, databases, editor configuration, and authentication secrets need tested backups and a restoration procedure.
A self-signed certificate can be useful while diagnosing connectivity, but disabling certificate verification is explicitly described as an insecure temporary workaround. Replace it with a certificate issued by a recognized certificate authority before production use.
Option 1: ONLYOFFICE Docs connected to Nextcloud
How the deployment works
ONLYOFFICE Docs is a document server that Nextcloud opens through its official connector. The two services can run on the same computer or on different computers. In either layout, the browser, Nextcloud, and document server must be able to reach the required endpoints. A separate host is often easier to scale and isolate; a same-machine installation can reduce network complexity for a small deployment.

The connector can restrict editor access by Nextcloud group and can separately restrict editing of files stored in external storage. These controls let an administrator expose office editing to a defined population without granting it to every account.
Security settings that matter
Since ONLYOFFICE Docs 7.2, JWT is enabled by default and a secret key is generated automatically. The identical secret must be configured on the Nextcloud side of the connector. Protect it like a password: do not place it in public documentation, logs, or client-side code, and rotate it through a planned maintenance window if it may have been exposed.

Keep TLS certificate verification enabled. If a self-signed certificate causes a connection failure during setup, use the documented bypass only long enough to confirm the diagnosis, then install a certificate issued by a certificate authority and re-enable verification. Also confirm that the hostname used by Nextcloud matches the certificate and that reverse-proxy forwarding preserves the required protocol and headers.
Collaboration features
The integration documentation lists advanced permissions for review and commenting, spreadsheet filtering, and PDF form filling. It also documents watermarking and macro controls. These are useful when a team needs more than simultaneous typing: reviewers can work without unrestricted editing, sensitive previews can carry a watermark, and administrators can establish a macro policy appropriate to their risk model.
Format and conversion limitations
ONLYOFFICE uses OOXML as its editing basis. DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX workflows therefore deserve particular attention, but “supported” does not mean every file will round-trip perfectly. When a non-OOXML file is converted, charts, tables, shapes, images, or formatting can change. Non-OOXML files open view-only by default unless an administrator enables conversion.
Before enabling conversion for a broad user population, test representative files and decide whether the original must remain untouched. Keep a versioned copy in Nextcloud while validating conversion behavior, especially for spreadsheets with complex charts or presentations with custom layouts.
Option 2: Nextcloud Office powered by Euro-Office
What it provides
Nextcloud’s current administration manual identifies Nextcloud Office powered by Euro-Office as the default office solution. It provides real-time collaborative editing for text documents, spreadsheets, and presentations with high-fidelity rendering. The documented office solutions support common Microsoft formats—DOC, DOCX, PPT, PPTX, XLS, and XLSX—as well as OpenDocument formats.

This is the natural first choice when keeping the office layer within the Nextcloud product experience matters more than deploying a separately managed editor. Users open files from the familiar Nextcloud interface, while administrators manage the service as part of the Nextcloud environment.
Deployment and scale boundaries
The installation manual describes deployment through distribution packages or Docker. It also describes a built-in server intended for personal use or small teams: it is slower than a standalone server and does not provide advanced scalability features. That statement is a design boundary, not a universal user limit. If many people will edit simultaneously, plan capacity around your own CPU, memory, storage, network, and document mix, and consider a standalone service architecture rather than assuming the built-in server will scale linearly.
For a small household, club, or internal team with modest concurrency, the built-in route can reduce moving parts. For a larger organization, separate the document workload from the main Nextcloud host where practical, place it behind a reverse proxy, and monitor resource use during real collaboration sessions.
Format fidelity: test the files your organization actually uses
File compatibility is often the deciding factor between two otherwise secure choices. “DOCX support” describes the container format, not every feature inside it. Create a test set that includes ordinary files and the difficult files users would otherwise discover only after migration.

- Collect sanitized examples from each department, including the largest and most complex files.
- Open each file in the candidate editor without saving, and record layout, formulas, charts, comments, and embedded objects.
- Make representative edits, save a new version, and reopen it in the desktop software your organization still uses.
- Compare the original and edited files visually and functionally; do not rely only on whether the file opens.
- Document exceptions, such as files that must remain view-only or be edited in one designated tool.
Choosing by deployment and team profile
Personal use or a small team
Start with Nextcloud Office powered by Euro-Office if you want the fewest components and your concurrency is modest. The built-in server is explicitly aimed at personal use and small teams. If your files are heavily OOXML-oriented or you need PDF forms, review controls, watermarks, or macro policy, test ONLYOFFICE Docs instead.

Departmental or cross-team collaboration
Prefer a dedicated document-server design when simultaneous editing is routine. ONLYOFFICE’s separate-server option makes the editor workload independently manageable, while Nextcloud Office can also be deployed through packages or Docker. In either case, reserve time for reverse-proxy configuration, certificate renewal, monitoring, and capacity tests.
Strict access segmentation
ONLYOFFICE is the stronger documented fit when editor access must be restricted by group or when external-storage editing needs a separate policy. Define the groups before rollout, test an allowed account and a denied account, and verify that external-storage rules match the organization’s data-classification policy.
ODF-first workflows
Do not infer fidelity from another organization’s results. Test the exact ODF documents and the selected Nextcloud Office/Euro-Office release. If users exchange files with outside parties in DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX, include that round trip in acceptance testing.
Secure rollout procedure
- Inventory the workload. List file formats, external storages, expected simultaneous editors, desktop applications that remain in use, and documents requiring comments, review, PDF forms, or macros.
- Select the architecture. Use the built-in Nextcloud Office route for a small, simple deployment, or plan a dedicated document server when concurrency and isolation justify it. For ONLYOFFICE, choose same-machine or separate-server placement and document the network path between services.
- Assign a service hostname. Use a dedicated document-server hostname or internal service address. Confirm that the browser, Nextcloud, and editor can each resolve and reach the endpoints required by the connector.
- Install the connector and editor. Follow the version-specific installation instructions for the chosen Nextcloud and editor releases. Record package or container versions so updates can be reproduced.
- Configure HTTPS correctly. Install a certificate issued by a certificate authority, verify the hostname, and leave certificate verification enabled. Treat any self-signed bypass as temporary troubleshooting only.
- Configure authentication. For ONLYOFFICE Docs 7.2 and later, copy the generated JWT secret into the Nextcloud connector exactly. Store and transmit the secret through an administrator-only channel.
- Apply least privilege. Restrict editor access to approved groups. Decide explicitly whether files in external storages may be edited, and test both permitted and blocked cases.
- Run the format test set. Use DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, ODF, CSV, and PDF examples. Record conversion loss, view-only behavior, and any files that must follow a single-tool policy.
- Test concurrent editing. Have multiple test accounts edit the same document, add comments, and close sessions unexpectedly. Confirm that versions and conflict behavior are understandable to users.
- Publish operating rules. Tell users which editor is authoritative for shared files, how to recognize a locked document, and where to report a layout or conversion problem.
- Back up and rehearse recovery. Include Nextcloud data and database backups, editor configuration, reverse-proxy configuration, and the JWT secret where applicable. Restore a sample file and reconnect the editor in a non-production environment.
Preventing conflicts between office tools
The integration documentation warns that simultaneous editing in different tools can overwrite or lose changes. A common example is one person editing in the web editor while another opens the same file in a desktop application or a second online editor. Choose one of two policies:

- Locking policy: Install and configure Nextcloud Temporary File Lock to reduce collisions, then test how locks behave when a browser closes, a laptop sleeps, or a network connection drops.
Locking reduces risk but cannot reconcile two independent copies intelligently. Keep Nextcloud file versioning available so an administrator can identify and restore an earlier version when a conflict slips through.

Operations after launch
Updates
Track Nextcloud, the office service, connector, container or distribution package, reverse proxy, and operating-system updates as one compatibility set. Test updates against the format corpus before broad rollout, and schedule maintenance for certificate and JWT changes rather than changing them during an incident.
Network and certificate monitoring
Monitor certificate expiry, DNS resolution, reverse-proxy reachability, and the bidirectional connection between Nextcloud and the document server. A browser that can reach Nextcloud does not prove that the Nextcloud server can reach the editor, so test both directions from the relevant hosts.
Backups and secrets
Back up documents and the Nextcloud database together with editor configuration. Protect the JWT secret for ONLYOFFICE deployments and document who can rotate it. A backup that restores files but omits the integration settings is not a complete recovery.
Capacity
Measure CPU, memory, storage latency, and network use while several users edit realistic files. The available documentation gives no universal concurrency number or benchmark. Treat the built-in Nextcloud server’s “personal use or small teams” description and its lack of advanced scalability features as a reason to test and scale out, not as a precise capacity guarantee.

Bottom line
Choose ONLYOFFICE Docs when you need the most explicit documented controls around groups, external storages, review and commenting, PDF forms, watermarks, macros, and independently managed deployment. Choose Nextcloud Office powered by Euro-Office when the first-party Nextcloud experience and a simpler small-team setup are more important than those additional controls. In either case, security depends on valid TLS, least-privilege access, tested format fidelity, conflict prevention, and recoverable operations—not on the editor’s name alone.
