PeaZip is the best all-platform replacement if you need one tool for Windows, macOS, Linux, or BSD, broad format support, archive creation, filename encryption, keyfiles, hashing, and secure deletion. NanaZip is the better Windows-native choice when modern Windows 11 context-menu integration matters most. Windows 11 24H2 can open ZIP, RAR, 7z, and TAR files without extra software, but its built-in tools are not a substitute for a dedicated archiver when you need deliberate encryption, hidden filenames, split volumes, or reliable cross-platform creation.
Quick verdict: which alternative should you choose?
The safest practical choice depends on your operating system and the kind of archive you need to make. No archive utility is vulnerability-free: every parser handles files that may have been prepared by someone else, so current updates and cautious extraction matter as much as the feature list.

What makes an archive alternative secure?
“Password protected” does not describe one uniform security level. An archive may encrypt file contents while leaving the names, folder structure, sizes, or timestamps visible. That metadata can disclose more than many people expect. For sensitive projects, choose a format that can encrypt its headers or filenames, not merely the payload.
- Content encryption: protects the bytes inside the archive when the correct password is required.
- Filename or header encryption: hides the directory listing and filenames, where the format supports it.
- Authentication: detects an incorrect password or tampered data instead of silently producing corrupted output.
- Keyfile support: adds a second factor stored separately from the passphrase.
- Secure deletion: reduces recoverable traces left by temporary files, but cannot guarantee that every operating-system or storage-layer copy is gone.
- Patch discipline: closes parser vulnerabilities that can be triggered simply by inspecting a malicious archive.
Use a long, unique passphrase. Keep a keyfile off the same device as the archive if you use one, and test that you can decrypt a copy before deleting the originals.

PeaZip: the strongest all-platform replacement
PeaZip is a free, open-source archive utility for Windows, macOS, Linux, and BSD. Its official feature list says it can open and extract more than 200 formats, including 7z, RAR, TAR, ZIP, ISO, CAB, and Zstandard. It can create archives in the formats for which it provides write support, so the read list should not be treated as a promise that every format can also be created.
Why PeaZip suits mixed-platform households
- The same general workflow is available across the major desktop operating systems and BSD.
- It combines extraction, creation, format conversion, batch jobs, checksums, and encryption instead of requiring separate utilities.
- Its security tools include an encrypted password manager, optional two-factor authentication, secure deletion, and file hashing.
- For supported formats, a password can be combined with an optional keyfile as two authentication factors.
Create an encrypted 7z archive in PeaZip
- Select the files or folder, right-click, and choose the PeaZip command that adds the selection to an archive. You can also open PeaZip and use its Add command.
- In the archive-creation dialog, set the format to 7Z. This is the practical choice when you need filename privacy as well as encrypted contents.
- Enter a long, unique password in the encryption section. Re-enter it exactly; a password manager can prevent transcription mistakes.
- Enable the option to encrypt filenames or archive headers. Without this setting, the archive may still reveal its file list.
- If you need two-factor protection, add a keyfile and store it through a separate channel from the archive and password. Anyone who has both the password and keyfile can authenticate, so treat the keyfile as sensitive.
- Choose the destination and start the operation. After it completes, open the resulting archive and extract a test file to a temporary folder. Do not delete the source data until that test succeeds.
PeaZip limitations to check before committing
“Can open” and “can create” are different capabilities. PeaZip’s broad extraction support includes RAR, but RAR creation may not be available in the same way as 7Z, ZIP, or other write formats. Check the format selector in the version you install before promising a recipient a particular output type. For a team, agree on one write format—usually 7Z or ZIP—and verify it with the recipient’s software.
NanaZip: the modern Windows-native option
NanaZip is an open-source 7-Zip derivative intended for the modern Windows experience. Security features and scope
NanaZip advertises Control Flow Guard, shadow-stack protection, package-integrity checks, Mark-of-the-Web handling, and restrictions on archive formats. These mitigations can reduce the impact of some exploitation paths, but they do not remove the need to install updates or distrust unexpected archives. The project’s modern and classic variants target Windows; do not present NanaZip as a macOS or Linux GUI replacement. Obtain it through a project-hosted channel such as the Microsoft Store or the project’s GitHub releases.
Use NanaZip for normal extraction
- Install NanaZip from an official project channel and allow Windows to finish registering its shell integration.
- Right-click an archive and choose the NanaZip extraction command. Use Extract here only when you trust the destination; Extract to a new folder is safer for unknown contents.
- For an archive received from the internet, inspect the filenames before opening documents or programs. Treat executable files and scripts as untrusted even after extraction.
Create an encrypted archive in NanaZip
- Select the files, right-click, and choose NanaZip’s Add to archive command.
- Set the archive format to 7z when filename confidentiality is required.
- Enter and confirm a long passphrase, then enable filename or header encryption in the same dialog if the option is shown.
- Choose the output path and create the archive. Open it in a separate test step and extract a non-sensitive sample before removing originals.
NanaZip is most attractive when the computers are Windows 10 or Windows 11 and the priority is a polished shell experience rather than cross-platform portability. For a household that also uses macOS or Linux, use PeaZip or standardize on a format those systems can open.
Windows 11 built-in archive handling: useful, but not a full archiver
Microsoft documents support in Windows 11 version 24H2 for ZIP, RAR, 7z, and TAR archives. That makes built-in handling convenient for opening ordinary downloads and doing quick ZIP work without installing a program.

Open and extract an archive
- In File Explorer, double-click the archive to inspect it, or right-click it and choose the available extraction command.
- Extract to a new folder when the archive came from an unknown or lightly trusted source. Review the resulting filenames before launching anything.
- For routine ZIP files, use Extract All, select a destination, and confirm. Keep the original archive until you have checked the extracted files.
Where built-in handling stops being enough
Windows’ integrated support is not the right tool for a deliberate encryption workflow. Microsoft warns that files added to a zipped folder may be unencrypted when they are unzipped, which can expose sensitive information. Use a dedicated archiver when you need encrypted creation, hidden filenames, password-plus-keyfile authentication, archive conversion, split volumes, checksums, or behavior that can be reproduced on another operating system. When the data matters, open the finished archive with a second compatible tool and verify that it decrypts correctly.

Filename encryption is not a substitute for a strong passphrase. It protects the directory information only when the archive format and the creation setting both support it. A recipient still needs compatible software to open the result.
Cross-platform format planning
Pick the archive format from the recipient’s capabilities, not just the program installed on your own computer. A useful default is 7Z for private archives exchanged between people who can install a dedicated utility, and ZIP for ordinary compatibility where filename secrecy is not required.

Updating and handling untrusted archives
Archive parsers process attacker-controlled input. CERT-EU’s advisory for CVE-2024-11477 described a high-severity 7-Zip vulnerability and recommended updating to the latest version. The practical lesson applies to PeaZip, NanaZip, built-in handlers, and every other archive reader: install current releases from official channels and do not assume a familiar filename is safe.
- Update the archiver and the operating system before opening a newly received archive.
- Do not open untrusted self-extracting executables. An executable archive can run code rather than merely display files.
- Extract suspicious material into a disposable folder or virtual machine with the least privilege necessary.
- Keep antivirus and endpoint protections enabled, but do not treat them as a replacement for patching.
- Inspect the archive listing first; be cautious with double extensions, scripts, shortcuts, and files that request elevated privileges.
- When exchanging important data, record the expected hash and compare it after transfer.
A safe archive workflow for important data
- Classify the contents. Decide whether the filenames themselves are confidential. If they are, use a format and setting that encrypts headers.
- Choose a mutually supported format. Confirm both the read and write capabilities of the sender and recipient’s software.
- Create the archive on a trusted, updated system. Use a unique passphrase and, where appropriate, a separately delivered keyfile.
- Verify the output. Reopen the archive, test extraction, and compare hashes for files where integrity matters.
- Transfer credentials separately. Do not send the archive, password, and keyfile in one message or storage location.
- Retain a recovery copy. Encryption protects against unauthorized access but also prevents recovery if every credential is lost.
- Remove temporary material carefully. Use the archiver’s secure-deletion feature where appropriate, while remembering that backups, snapshots, and solid-state-drive wear leveling may retain other copies.
Troubleshooting common failures
The recipient can see filenames despite the password
The archive was probably created with a format or setting that encrypts contents but not headers. Recreate it as a 7Z archive, enable filename or header encryption, and test the result with the recipient’s software.
The archive opens on one computer but not another
Check whether the sender used a format the second program can write and read, not merely extract. Install a current PeaZip or another compatible utility on the second system, or recreate the archive in a mutually supported format.

Extraction reports corruption
Keep the original archive, compare its hash with the sender’s value if one was supplied, and transfer it again if the hashes differ. If the hashes match, update the archiver and test extraction to a new local folder; a damaged source or incomplete split-volume set may be involved.
A password is rejected even though it looks correct
Check keyboard layout, capitalization, trailing spaces, and whether a keyfile was also required. Do not edit or rename a keyfile casually. If the archive was created with a password manager, copy the exact stored value rather than retyping it.
Windows 11 cannot perform the operation I need
Use a dedicated archiver for encryption, hidden filenames, split archives, format conversion, keyfiles, or batch processing. Built-in handling is designed for convenience, not for every archive-management requirement.
