For most streamers, the best second monitor is a 24–27-inch 1080p IPS display running at 60–100Hz, with an adjustable stand and a video input your computer actually provides. That combination gives OBS, Discord, Twitch chat, browser guides, maps and stream controls enough room without spending money on gaming specifications you will not use.

Choose a faster panel only when the second screen may also show competitive gameplay. A 610Hz esports monitor is a specialist option; it is unnecessary for a screen that mainly holds chat and dashboards. Before buying, verify your laptop, desktop graphics card or dock has a spare HDMI, DisplayPort or video-capable USB-C output.

Start with the second monitor’s job

The right specification follows the workload. A monitor used as a text-and-control panel has different priorities from one that occasionally becomes a second competitive-gaming display.

Chat, OBS and stream controls

Readable text, enough window area and easy positioning matter more than extreme refresh speed. A 24-inch 1920×1080 screen is compact and inexpensive to place beside a primary gaming display. A 27-inch 1920×1080 screen makes browser pages, OBS docks and chat columns physically larger, although it has lower pixel density than a 24-inch Full HD panel.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Game guides, maps and browser research

These workloads benefit from a panel that can stay open for long periods, a stand that allows height and tilt adjustment, and enough width to keep a guide beside a game map or video. Landscape orientation suits wide dashboards and full browser pages. Portrait orientation is useful when the priority is a tall, narrow chat or activity feed.

A second gaming screen

If you might play on the second monitor, response and refresh performance become more important. Competitive play can benefit from a much higher refresh rate than the 60–100Hz that is adequate for mostly static chat, dashboards and video. Remember that the second monitor does not need to match the primary monitor unless you plan to move games between them.

Recommended specification by use case

Use case Practical size and resolution Refresh-rate target Features to prioritize
Chat, Discord and stream controls 24–27 inches, 1920×1080 60–100Hz IPS viewing angles, readable text, height adjustment, HDMI or DisplayPort
OBS plus browser guides and maps 27 inches, 1920×1080; QHD if you need more workspace 60–100Hz Large usable desktop, adjustable stand, reliable scaling and convenient cable routing
Occasional games on the second display 24–27 inches, 1920×1080 or QHD At least 100Hz; choose higher for competitive play Low response specification, variable-refresh support and the correct high-bandwidth input
Dedicated esports play on the second display 24-inch class, usually 1920×1080 Very high refresh, subject to your system and game Competitive response performance, VRR and a suitable DisplayPort or HDMI connection

QHD and 4K provide more workspace and denser text, but they generally cost more and require more graphics bandwidth. For a side screen whose primary role is chat, the additional resolution is a preference rather than a requirement.

Do you need 144Hz on a second monitor?

Usually, no. A 60–100Hz monitor is adequate when the display shows chat, OBS, stream dashboards, static guides, maps or video. Scrolling feels smoother at 100Hz than at 60Hz, but the difference is not a reason by itself to buy a premium esports panel.

Choose 144Hz or faster when you will regularly play games on that screen, want smooth high-frame-rate camera motion, or want the flexibility to use it as a backup gaming display. The benefit depends on the computer producing enough frames and on the connection supporting the chosen resolution and refresh rate.

The extreme end is represented by the ASUS ROG Strix XG248QSG Ace. ASUS lists a 24.1-inch 1920×1080 Super TN panel, a 610Hz overclocked refresh rate, 0.1ms response time, variable-refresh-rate support, DisplayHDR 400 and HDMI 2.1 (ASUS specification, 2025). Those capabilities target esports play, not a chat-only side screen. Treat 610Hz as an overclocked maximum for that model, not a universal operating requirement or a guarantee of better stream quality.

Size, resolution and text comfort

24-inch Full HD

A 24-inch 1920×1080 monitor is the compact baseline. It fits on desks where a 27-inch panel would crowd the primary display, and its pixel density makes ordinary desktop text reasonably crisp at standard scaling. It is a sensible choice when the side screen will remain in landscape or portrait beside a gaming monitor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

27-inch Full HD

A 27-inch 1920×1080 display gives larger physical windows. OBS panels, Twitch chat and browser controls are easier to glance at from a little farther away. The trade-off is lower pixel density than 24-inch Full HD, so inspect text at your normal viewing distance and use operating-system scaling if needed.

QHD and 4K

Higher resolutions let you fit more columns, a longer chat history or a guide beside a map. They also raise purchase cost and graphics-bandwidth requirements. Confirm that your graphics card, laptop or dock can drive the intended resolution at the target refresh rate before choosing one.

Connectivity: check the computer before the monitor

Look for an unused HDMI, DisplayPort or video-capable USB-C output on the graphics card, laptop or dock. MSI’s dual-monitor guidance specifically recommends checking these outputs before buying. A USB-C socket is not automatically a display output: it must support video, commonly through DisplayPort Alt Mode or a compatible Thunderbolt connection.

Match the cable and any adapter to the monitor’s resolution and refresh rate. An adapter that handles 1080p at 60Hz may not carry a higher refresh rate, QHD or 4K. Connect the gaming monitor to the output that best supports its required refresh rate, then use the remaining suitable output for the side display.

A monitor with extra ports can simplify a desk, but it does not replace a compatible output on the computer. The Dell P2725HE, for example, is listed with HDMI, DisplayPort input and output, USB-C upstream, USB-A, USB-C downstream and RJ45 Ethernet, along with a 27-inch Full HD panel, 300-nit brightness and 99% sRGB coverage (TechRadar product listing accessed 2026). Its broad connectivity suits a productivity-oriented second screen, provided your computer can supply the display signal.

Stand ergonomics and portrait chat

Prioritize a stand with height, tilt and pivot adjustment. Pivot is essential if you want to rotate the panel for a tall Twitch or Discord column; otherwise you must use a compatible VESA arm or stand.

Place the second monitor close enough to glance at without turning your shoulders away from the game. Align the top edges when possible so your eyes do not repeatedly jump between very different heights. A slight inward angle keeps the display within your peripheral view while leaving the primary monitor centered.

Landscape setup

Use landscape for OBS, wide browser pages, maps, moderation tools and dashboards with several columns. It also makes the side screen a more versatile backup monitor.

Neither listing establishes an independent ranking for streaming-chat latency, power use or eye comfort. Do not treat brightness, color coverage or a manufacturer response figure as a laboratory comparison between these monitors.

How to install a second monitor

  1. Inventory the outputs. Check the desktop graphics card, laptop chassis and dock for a free HDMI, DisplayPort or video-capable USB-C port. If a dock is involved, verify that it supports the number of displays and the resolution and refresh rate you want.
  2. Choose the cable. Use HDMI, DisplayPort or USB-C according to the available ports. If an adapter is required, check its stated resolution and refresh-rate limit rather than assuming every adapter is equivalent.
  3. Connect both displays. Turn off the computer if the manufacturer of your hardware recommends it, connect the cables firmly, then power on the monitors and computer. Select the correct input on the new display.
  4. Set the gaming monitor as primary. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display, select the gaming monitor, expand Multiple displays if needed and enable the option to make it the main display. On macOS, open System Settings > Displays and use the arrangement controls to identify the primary display.
  5. Arrange the screens. In the same display settings page, drag the monitor rectangles to match their physical left-right positions. Apply the arrangement so the pointer crosses the bezel in the correct direction.
  6. Set orientation and resolution. Choose landscape or portrait for the side monitor, then select its native resolution. Avoid forcing a refresh rate beyond what the cable, adapter and display input support.
  7. Move applications. Keep the game on the primary monitor. Place OBS, Discord, chat, guides, maps and stream controls on the second screen. Save window layouts in the applications that support them so they reopen in the expected position.
  8. Test the real workload. Start a game, open OBS preview and scroll chat or a guide. Check that text is readable, the pointer crosses displays naturally and the game remains on the intended primary panel.

Windows and laptop considerations

A desktop graphics card normally drives two monitors when it has two suitable outputs, but the exact limit depends on the card and its ports. A laptop may have one HDMI output, a video-capable USB-C port, or only a dock connection. Some docks use display-compression or USB graphics technology with their own limits, so check the laptop and dock specifications together.

When a laptop is running on battery, a second illuminated panel adds power demand. If the system becomes hot or battery life falls sharply, reduce brightness, use a standard refresh rate and connect AC power during long streams. These are practical operating choices, not evidence that one monitor model is inherently more efficient than another.

Troubleshooting common dual-monitor problems

The second screen is not detected

  • Reseat both ends of the cable and select the monitor’s correct input.
  • Try another HDMI or DisplayPort output on the graphics card if one is available.
  • On Windows, open Settings > System > Display and use Detect under the multiple-display controls.
  • Install current graphics drivers and restart. If the display works directly from the laptop but not through a dock, check the dock’s display limit and firmware guidance.

The chosen refresh rate is unavailable

The cable, adapter, monitor input or graphics output may be the limiting component. Temporarily select 60Hz, then test the higher setting after replacing the weakest link with a correctly rated cable or adapter. A display’s maximum refresh number does not mean every input supports it.

Games stutter after adding the monitor

First set the side screen to a standard refresh rate and close unnecessary animated browser tabs or previews. Update graphics drivers and retest. If frame pacing or application behavior remains problematic, keep the side display at 60Hz or 100Hz and reserve the highest-performance output and refresh mode for the gaming monitor.

Windows open on the wrong screen

Return to Settings > System > Display, confirm the gaming monitor is marked as the main display, and move each application to the desired panel before closing it. Some programs remember their last position; others may need their own window or display setting adjusted.

Portrait mode looks stretched or sideways

Set the operating-system orientation to portrait only after rotating the monitor physically. If text is still rotated, the display orientation was changed in one place but not the other. Recheck the monitor arrangement and apply the setting again.

Buying checklist

  • Define whether the panel is for chat and controls, guides and maps, or actual second-screen gaming.
  • Choose 24–27 inches and 1080p as the practical baseline for most streaming setups.
  • Select 60–100Hz for mostly static work; pay for higher refresh only when gameplay on that screen justifies it.
  • Confirm a spare HDMI, DisplayPort or video-capable USB-C output before ordering.
  • Match cable and adapter capability to the target resolution and refresh rate.
  • Prefer height, tilt and pivot adjustment when the monitor will be beside a primary gaming screen.
  • Check the current model revision, price, warranty and regional availability; specifications and bundled cables can differ by market.
  • Plan the physical layout before buying: measure desk depth, stand footprint and the space needed to pivot the panel.

Bottom-line choice

Buy a 24–27-inch 1080p IPS monitor at 60–100Hz with an adjustable stand and the correct HDMI, DisplayPort or USB-C input for your computer. That is the balanced choice for OBS, Discord, Twitch chat, browser guides and maps. Move to a high-refresh esports model only when the second display will also host competitive gameplay; otherwise, connectivity, text readability and ergonomics deliver more practical value than an extreme refresh number.
