What “source links” really changes about a search engine
A search engine can answer the same query while giving you very different levels of control over the evidence. A conventional results page presents titles, snippets, domains and direct links so you can open the underlying pages. An answer-first interface may summarize several pages before you see where its claims came from, or may make the source list secondary to the generated response.

Two decisions to make before choosing an alternative
Do you want one independent index or several retrieval sources?
An independent index reduces reliance on a single upstream search company. Brave says its search product uses its own independent web index, and Mojeek is identified by Brown University IT as a UK private search engine with its own crawler. This approach can surface pages that are ranked or omitted differently elsewhere, but its coverage and freshness depend on the engine’s own crawl and indexing systems.
A multi-source service uses more than one retrieval path. Kagi documents its Teclis web index and TinyGem news index, anonymized calls to major search providers, and vertical sources such as Wolfram Alpha, Wikipedia and other APIs. That breadth can help when one index has weak coverage for a niche query. It also means that “independent” describes only part of the retrieval stack, not every result.
The Congressional Research Service distinguishes Google and Bing as services that maintain comprehensive indexes and notes that many other engines obtain access through syndication agreements. The practical trade-off is not simply “independent versus good.” It is whether you prefer fewer upstream dependencies or more varied inputs for retrieval.

They are. A service can reduce the amount of information associated with a query without crawling the web itself, while another can maintain its own crawler without making the same privacy commitments. Evaluate index ownership, source-provider diversity and telemetry separately instead of treating “private” or “independent” as a complete description.

Its controls address a different problem: result quality is affected not only by what is indexed, but also by which domains repeatedly appear. Kagi’s comparison material lists site blocking, so you can remove a domain that produces low-value pages without changing the query itself. The same material describes an ad-free business model and zero search telemetry, which is useful when you want the page to prioritize results rather than sponsored placements and when you do not want searches recorded as product telemetry under the stated policy.
The trade-off is architectural. Kagi is not limited to one independent index, so it is not the clearest choice if your primary goal is to avoid every upstream provider. Its own documentation says, “Having a single-index source may be limiting.” That is an argument for source diversity, not a claim that one index is always inadequate.
Choose Brave Search for a free independent index with re-ranking
Brave Search is the strongest fit when you want an independent index and the ability to change ranking behavior yourself. Brave says its search uses its own independent web index. Its Goggles feature can re-rank results on top of that index, allowing users to apply a ruleset rather than accepting one fixed ordering.
This combination is useful for repeatable workflows. A developer can favor documentation domains, a researcher can demote scraped-content sites, and a security analyst can build a narrow result profile for a recurring investigation. The important distinction is that Goggles changes ordering; it does not turn the service into a separate crawler or create evidence that was never indexed.
Brave is also the practical starting point when a subscription is not acceptable: the service is presented as a free search option. Confirm current account, feature and advertising terms at the time you set it up, because those details can change independently of the index model.

Choose Startpage for privacy-oriented conventional search
Startpage fits readers who want a familiar search workflow—query box, ranked results, snippets and direct links—while prioritizing private search. Its official support material documents private search and explains how to set it as a default search engine.
Use a conservative interpretation of that promise. The cited support information establishes the privacy-oriented search experience and setup instructions, but it does not verify every claim about the providers that supply or supplement results. If your decision depends on index ownership or a specific upstream relationship, look for a current technical statement rather than inferring it from the brand’s privacy positioning.

Startpage is therefore a good fit when the main change you want is less exposure of your query during an otherwise conventional search session. It is not the evidence-based choice for asserting a particular independent crawler or a documented re-ranking system.
Choose Mojeek when the crawler itself matters
Mojeek is relevant to readers who want a private service that maintains its own crawler. Brown University IT describes it as a UK private search engine using its own crawler. That makes it a direct alternative to services that primarily obtain access to another company’s index.
An own-crawler model can produce a distinct mix of pages and rankings, which is valuable when you are testing whether a result is specific to one major index. It also creates an obvious limitation: the quality of a niche or newly published result depends on Mojeek’s crawl and indexing coverage. Treat it as an independent viewpoint, not as a guarantee that every page on the web is equally available.
How to use these engines to verify sources
The engine is only one part of a source-first workflow. Use the following process when the provenance of an answer matters.
- State the claim you need to verify. Turn a broad question into a checkable proposition, such as “Does this software support passkeys on the current desktop release?” A precise claim produces more useful links than a general topic phrase.
- Run the first search in the model that matches your goal. Use Kagi when several source types may help, Brave or Mojeek when an independent index is important, and Startpage when a private conventional results page is the priority.
- Read the result page, not only the snippet. Note the domain, page title, date and whether the link leads to a primary document, a news report, a forum post or a copied summary.
- Open at least one primary or first-party source. For software, that may be official documentation or a release note. For policy, it may be the regulator or organization that issued the rule. A search snippet is an invitation to inspect a page, not the evidence itself.
- Repeat the query in a different index model. Compare an independent-index engine with a multi-source or privacy-layer service. A result that appears only in one place deserves closer checking; a missing result does not prove that the page is false or unavailable.
- Change the query instead of only scrolling. Add the product version, jurisdiction, date, file format or organization name. Search engines can rank a vague query plausibly while still missing the exact document you need.
- Record the links that support your conclusion. Save the page URL, title, publisher and access date. If a page changes later, that record shows what you actually reviewed.
How to get more visible links from any search service
Use terms that signal primary documentation
Add words such as “official documentation,” “release notes,” “specification,” “court opinion,” “dataset,” or the name of the issuing organization when those are relevant. These terms narrow the result set toward documents you can inspect directly. They do not prove authority; they simply make the intended source type explicit.
Separate discovery from verification
Use broad searches to discover vocabulary, product names and competing explanations. Then run a second, narrower search for the exact claim and its likely primary source. This prevents a popular summary from becoming the only link in your evidence chain.

Use controls deliberately
Kagi’s site blocking can remove domains that consistently produce low-value pages. Brave’s Goggles can re-rank results on its independent index. These controls are most useful when you can explain the rule you applied. A ranking filter that favors familiar domains may hide a newer or less prominent source, so periodically repeat important searches without the filter.
Check dates and regional differences
Index results vary by crawl timing, language, location and personalization settings. For a policy, price, security issue or software feature, include the relevant date and region in the query and inspect the page’s own revision or publication information. A result that is correct for one country or release may be wrong for another.

Independent does not mean complete
An engine with its own crawler can reduce dependence on a syndicated index, but it still has to discover, crawl, process and rank pages. Smaller or newer sites may appear later, and niche coverage can differ substantially from a larger index. Use independent engines to expose another viewpoint, not to assume universal coverage.
More sources do not automatically mean better evidence
Kagi’s multiple retrieval paths can increase breadth, yet a page from a specialist API, a news index and a general web result still need different kinds of checking. A computational result may answer a calculation but not establish the assumptions behind it. A reference entry may define a term without proving a current implementation detail. Source diversity helps you find candidates; human inspection determines whether a candidate supports the claim.

“Private search” can refer to different practices: limiting query association, reducing personalization, avoiding telemetry, or simply offering a privacy-focused interface. The material cited here explicitly lists zero search telemetry for Kagi and describes Startpage and Mojeek as private-oriented services, but it does not provide a complete, directly comparable telemetry specification for all four. Read the current policy if your threat model depends on retention, account linkage, logging or third-party requests.
Ad-free and independent are not the same feature

Ranking controls can create blind spots
Blocking a domain or applying a re-ranking rule may make results more useful for a particular task, but it can also remove a legitimate dissenting source. Keep a neutral search available for high-stakes work and compare filtered and unfiltered results before drawing a conclusion.

If you conduct serious research regularly, using two complementary models is often more robust than searching one engine exclusively. Pair a broad multi-source service with an independent-index service, then verify the decisive claim on a primary page. That arrangement separates retrieval diversity from index independence instead of asking one product to provide both.
What to check before changing your default search engine
- Link handling: confirm that results open the original page and that you can copy the full URL.
- Browser integration: test the address-bar search, new-tab search and mobile browser behavior separately.
- Language and region: run a local query and an English-language query to see whether coverage matches your needs.
- Advanced controls: test site blocking or re-ranking on a harmless query before using those rules for research.
- Privacy documentation: read the current policy for logging, personalization, account use and third-party requests.
- Availability and price: verify present plans and limits directly; prices, free allowances and feature names can change.
For Startpage, the official support center documents the path for private search and setting a default engine, so use those current instructions rather than relying on an old browser menu. For Brave, treat Goggles as a ranking layer on the independent index, not as a separate source database.
Bottom line: match the engine to the evidence problem
