For most runners and cyclists, the Polar H10 is the best all-around screenless heart-rate monitor because it uses electrical sensing, supports ANT+ and Bluetooth, and offers up to 400 hours of battery life according to Polar. Choose the Garmin HRM-Pro Plus instead if you use compatible Garmin equipment and want running-dynamics data. Choose the Polar Verity Sense if you dislike chest straps and want an optical armband with internal workout recording.

A screenless heart-rate monitor has no display of its own. It measures your pulse and sends the result to another device—such as a sports watch, cycling computer, phone, indoor-training platform or fitness app—or stores the workout for later transfer. That design keeps the sensor small and lets you view heart rate where you already train.

The right choice is less about a universal accuracy ranking and more about sensing method, comfort, compatibility and whether you need recording without a watch or phone. No independent laboratory ranking or accuracy percentage is established for these three models, so claims below are limited to the manufacturers’ specifications and documented features.

How screenless heart-rate monitors work

Chest straps use electrical sensing

A chest strap detects the heart’s electrical activity through electrodes touching the skin. The Polar H10 is described by Polar as an ECG heart-rate sensor. The strap sends heart-rate data over ANT+ or Bluetooth to a receiving device. Because the sensor is held against the chest rather than reading through the skin from a distance, chest straps are the conventional choice for direct, low-latency training data, particularly when a workout includes frequent pace or effort changes.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The trade-off is physical: the strap must remain in contact with the chest, and the textile section needs to be washed and dried as recommended by its manufacturer. The H10 has a detachable, washable textile strap and a replaceable coin-cell battery, which makes long-term ownership different from a rechargeable armband.

Optical sensors read from the arm or temple

An optical monitor uses light-based sensing from a wearable module placed against the upper arm or, on supported placements, the temple. The Polar Verity Sense is designed for arm or temple use. It can transmit live readings over ANT+ or Bluetooth and has internal memory, allowing a workout to be recorded when no watch or phone is present and reviewed later.

Optical placement is the key variable. The band must be snug enough to keep the sensor stable without becoming uncomfortable. Movement and an incorrect position can affect the signal, so check the fit before judging the sensor’s performance. The available evidence does not support a blanket statement that an optical monitor is always more or less accurate than a chest strap.

Polar H10: best general-purpose chest strap

What you get

Polar’s current product information describes the H10 as an ECG heart-rate monitor with Bluetooth and ANT+ connectivity. That combination covers the most common receiving devices used by runners and cyclists: watches, phones, cycling computers, indoor-training equipment and compatible apps. ANT+ is especially useful when a bike computer or training machine expects that protocol; Bluetooth is common on phones, watches and software.

Polar states up to 400 hours of battery life. This is a manufacturer claim rather than an independently measured result, and actual runtime depends on use and battery condition. The sensor uses a replaceable coin-cell battery. Its textile strap detaches for washing, a practical advantage for frequent training and for anyone who wants to replace the strap separately from the electronics.

Who should choose the H10

  • Runners who want a chest strap for intervals, tempo sessions or other workouts with rapid effort changes.
  • Cyclists who need to pair with a bike computer, phone, indoor-training equipment or more than one type of receiver over time.
  • Anyone who prefers a replaceable coin cell over a rechargeable sensor.
  • Users who value a detachable, washable strap for regular maintenance.

What to confirm before buying

The H10 sends data to another device; it does not display heart rate on the strap. Polar’s product information summarized here does not establish internal workout recording for the H10, so plan to use a watch, phone, bike computer or training platform during the workout. If your setup needs simultaneous connections, verify the receiving device and app limits rather than assuming every combination can connect at once.

Garmin HRM-Pro Plus: best for Garmin running dynamics

Metrics beyond heart rate

Garmin states that the HRM-Pro Plus transmits real-time data over ANT+ and Bluetooth Low Energy and works with Garmin watches, cycling computers, compatible fitness equipment and apps. Its differentiator is running-dynamics information. On compatible Garmin equipment, the strap can provide vertical oscillation, ground-contact time, stride length and vertical ratio in addition to heart rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These metrics are useful when your training decisions include form and efficiency, not only intensity. They are ecosystem-dependent: the strap can transmit the data, but the receiving Garmin device or app must support the relevant metrics for you to see or analyze them. The specifications do not justify assuming that every phone app, watch or bike computer will expose every running-dynamics field.

Battery and ownership

Garmin claims up to one year of battery life and describes a tool-free battery door. “Up to one year” is a manufacturer figure, not a laboratory result, and runtime varies with use. The tool-free door is intended to simplify replacement when the battery is depleted.

Who should choose the HRM-Pro Plus

  • Runners already using compatible Garmin equipment who will use the running-dynamics fields.
  • Athletes who want both ANT+ and Bluetooth Low Energy transmission for watches, cycling computers, equipment or apps.
  • People who prefer a long claimed replacement interval and a battery door that does not require a special tool.

If you only need heart rate and do not use Garmin’s supported running-dynamics features, compare the HRM-Pro Plus with the H10 on strap comfort, existing device compatibility and battery preference. The available specifications do not establish that one has a universally superior heart-rate accuracy.

Polar Verity Sense: best chest-strap alternative

Placement and recording

The Verity Sense is an optical monitor designed for the arm or temple. Polar describes it as providing freedom of movement and multiple options for viewing and recording workouts. It supports Bluetooth and ANT+ transmission and includes internal memory, so you can record a session without carrying a watch or keeping a phone connected, then transfer the stored workout for later review.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Polar’s support comparison lists 20 hours of operation. That is a rechargeable-use figure, so the ownership routine is different from the replaceable-cell H10 or the long claimed interval of the HRM-Pro Plus. Charge it before longer training blocks and check the remaining charge when you plan to record without another device.

Who should choose the Verity Sense

  • Runners and cyclists who find chest straps distracting, restrictive or uncomfortable.
  • People who want an optical sensor that can sit on the upper arm rather than around the chest.
  • Athletes who occasionally train without a watch or phone but still want a stored workout.
  • Users whose watch, phone, bike computer or app accepts ANT+ or Bluetooth heart-rate sensors.

Fit matters more than with a chest strap

Place the sensor where Polar specifies for the selected mode and tighten the band so the module stays in consistent contact with the skin. If the reading drops out during movement, adjust the position and tension before concluding that the sensor or app is defective. The evidence available for this comparison does not provide an independent accuracy percentage for the Verity Sense.

Choose by training situation

For interval running

Start with the Polar H10 if you want a conventional electrical chest strap and low-latency data during repeated pace changes. The Garmin HRM-Pro Plus is the better match when your compatible Garmin setup uses running-dynamics fields as part of the workout. Choose the Verity Sense when comfort and avoiding a chest strap outweigh the need for chest-strap placement.

For everyday road running

Comfort and the device you already carry usually decide the choice. A runner who forgets to charge devices may prefer the H10’s replaceable coin cell or the HRM-Pro Plus’s long claimed battery interval. A runner who dislikes chest contact may prefer the Verity Sense, provided its 20-hour operating window fits the charging routine.

For outdoor cycling

The H10 is a straightforward choice when you need to pair with a cycling computer or move between a bike computer, phone and indoor equipment. Confirm that the computer accepts ANT+ or Bluetooth and check whether it supports one or more simultaneous sensor connections. The HRM-Pro Plus also transmits through both ANT+ and Bluetooth Low Energy and is attractive when you already use compatible Garmin cycling equipment.

For indoor training

Check the trainer, console or app’s accepted protocol before selecting a sensor. ANT+ is common on cycling equipment and dedicated receivers, while Bluetooth is common on phones and apps. If the platform allows only one Bluetooth heart-rate connection, disconnect the sensor from other nearby apps before pairing. The H10 and Verity Sense provide both ANT+ and Bluetooth; the HRM-Pro Plus provides ANT+ and Bluetooth Low Energy.

When you train without a watch or phone

The Verity Sense is the clear fit among these three because Polar documents internal memory for workout recording. The H10 and HRM-Pro Plus specifications summarized here do not establish comparable internal recording, so do not buy either expecting a standalone stored session unless the current product documentation for your exact edition says otherwise.

Compatibility: ANT+ versus Bluetooth

ANT+

ANT+ is widely used by cycling computers, sports watches and indoor-training equipment. It can be the simplest route when a bike computer is already configured to search for an ANT+ heart-rate sensor. The receiver still needs ANT+ support, and a phone may require compatible hardware or an adapter.

Bluetooth and Bluetooth Low Energy

Bluetooth is common for phones, watches and training applications. Garmin specifies Bluetooth Low Energy for the HRM-Pro Plus; Polar lists Bluetooth for the H10 and Verity Sense. Open the receiving app’s sensor settings, select the heart-rate sensor and complete pairing there rather than pairing only in the phone’s general Bluetooth menu when the app provides its own sensor workflow.

Check simultaneous connections

Do not assume that a sensor can maintain every desired connection at the same time. Confirm the limits of the watch, bike computer, phone app and indoor-training equipment in your particular setup. If one device cannot connect, temporarily close other apps or disable their sensor connection, then pair the intended receiver first.

How to set up a screenless monitor

Chest-strap setup

  1. Attach the transmitter to the textile strap and inspect the contacts and strap for dirt or damage.
  2. Position the strap around the chest so the electrodes sit against the skin and the transmitter remains centered and stable.
  3. Follow the strap manufacturer’s preparation guidance so the electrodes make reliable contact before starting the workout.
  4. On the watch, cycling computer, phone app or indoor-training console, open the heart-rate sensor menu and choose the sensor by its displayed identifier.
  5. Select ANT+ or Bluetooth according to the receiver’s available protocol, then confirm that a live heart-rate value appears before beginning the session.
  6. After training, detach the transmitter if the design allows it, wash the textile strap as directed by the manufacturer, and let it dry fully before storage.

Optical armband setup

  1. Charge the Verity Sense and check that enough operating time remains for the planned session.
  2. Place it on the supported arm location, or use the temple placement when appropriate, with the optical module held firmly against the skin.
  3. Tighten the band enough to prevent sliding while avoiding excessive pressure that could make the session uncomfortable.
  4. Pair it with the watch, bike computer, phone or app over ANT+ or Bluetooth, or select its internal-recording mode when you will train without a receiver.
  5. Start a short warm-up and verify that the receiving device shows a stable live value before committing to intervals or a long ride.
  6. Stop and save the workout, then transfer the internally stored session later if you trained without a connected device.

Troubleshooting common problems

The sensor will not pair

  • Wake the sensor by wearing it or starting its recording mode, depending on the model.
  • Move away from other phones, watches and training consoles that may have captured the connection.
  • In the training app, remove the old sensor entry and run a fresh heart-rate-sensor search.
  • Try the other supported protocol—ANT+ instead of Bluetooth, or Bluetooth instead of ANT+—if the receiver offers both.
  • Check the battery or charge level and inspect the strap, contacts and optical band for damage.

The reading drops out during a workout

For a chest strap, recheck that the electrodes remain in contact and that the strap has not loosened. For the Verity Sense, adjust the arm or temple position and band tension so the module does not move. If the problem occurs only when multiple devices are active, disconnect unnecessary receivers and test one connection at a time.

The workout has no stored data

Only the Verity Sense is documented here with internal memory. If you used an H10 or HRM-Pro Plus without a connected receiver, the specifications summarized here do not establish that a workout should be recoverable from the sensor. For the Verity Sense, confirm that you selected a recording mode, stopped and saved the session, and completed the app’s transfer step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Battery life is shorter than expected

Manufacturer figures are maximum or stated operating claims, not guarantees for every training pattern. Replace the H10 coin cell when needed, use the HRM-Pro Plus battery door as designed, and recharge the Verity Sense before a long session. Keep the transmitter or optical module dry and stored according to its manufacturer’s care instructions.

What the specifications do—and do not—prove

The published information establishes connectivity, sensing approach, battery figures and feature differences. It does not establish a controlled, independent ranking of heart-rate accuracy, a universal latency winner, live prices, stock availability or subscription costs. Treat “up to 400 hours,” “up to one year” and “20 hours” as model-specific manufacturer or support-page figures with the qualifications shown above.

Because no screen is built into any of these monitors, your experience also depends on the receiving device: its refresh behavior, connection limits, app support and ability to display or record the data. A monitor that is technically compatible may still be inconvenient if your preferred app does not expose its advanced fields or if your setup cannot maintain the required simultaneous connections.

Decision checklist

  • Choose the sensing method: electrical chest strap for a conventional direct signal, or optical arm/temple placement if chest comfort is the priority.
  • Match the protocol: verify ANT+ support for your cycling computer or equipment and Bluetooth support for your phone, watch or app.
  • Decide whether standalone recording matters: the Verity Sense has documented internal memory; comparable recording is not stated for the H10 or HRM-Pro Plus in the product information summarized here.
  • Compare maintenance: H10 uses a replaceable coin cell and washable detachable strap; HRM-Pro Plus has a tool-free battery door; Verity Sense is rechargeable and rated for 20 hours by Polar.
  • Use ecosystem features: select HRM-Pro Plus when compatible Garmin running-dynamics metrics are important.
  • Plan for fit: a secure, consistent contact surface is necessary whether the sensor sits on the chest, arm or temple.
  • Confirm the exact receiver combination: check simultaneous-connection limits before assuming one sensor can feed every device at once.

Final recommendation

Buy the Polar H10 for the broadest general-purpose fit: electrical chest sensing, ANT+ and Bluetooth, a replaceable coin cell and a detachable washable strap. Pick the Garmin HRM-Pro Plus when compatible Garmin running-dynamics data is the reason you are buying a chest strap. Pick the Polar Verity Sense when avoiding a chest strap and recording a workout internally are more important than the longer battery claims associated with the chest-strap options.
