For most modern gaming PCs, start in OBS Studio with 1920×1080 at 60 fps, a supported hardware encoder, a quality-based rate control (NVENC CQP, AMD CQP, Intel ICQ, or x264 CRF), a quality value around the middle of OBS’s 16–23 range, a 2-second keyframe interval, and MKV recording. This gives motion the smoothness viewers expect without treating a livestream bitrate as a recording limit.

If frames still stutter, the usual problem is not the quality number. OBS needs GPU time to render scenes while the game is running. Cap the game’s frame rate, reduce its graphics load, simplify the OBS scene, or drop to 30 fps before lowering quality further.

Recommended OBS profiles at a glance

Use the profile that matches the slowest part of your workflow: the game, encoder, storage drive, or editing software. The 1080p60 profile is the normal starting point, not a promise that every laptop or game can sustain it.

Use case Canvas and output Frame rate Encoder and rate control When to choose it
Default gameplay recording 1920×1080 60 fps Hardware encoder; CQP/ICQ 16–23 The game and recording remain stable, and the editor supports the selected codec.
Constrained GPU or laptop 1920×1080 30 fps Hardware encoder; quality-based control 60 fps causes rendering lag, skipped frames, or unstable frame pacing.
Lower-output fallback 1280×720 30 fps Hardware encoder or x264 The system cannot sustain 1080p, or storage and editing throughput are limited.
High-detail capture 2560×1440 or 3840×2160 30 or 60 fps Only an encoder and drive that can sustain the workload The game, encoder, storage, and complete editing pipeline have been tested at that output.

For local recording, quality-based controls adapt the data rate to the scene. Fast camera movement, foliage, particles, and dark noise usually require more data than a static menu. That is why a local recording should not be configured by copying a streaming CBR number.

Choose the encoder before tuning quality

Hardware encoding is the preferred first choice when a supported encoder is available. It moves compression work to a dedicated media engine or integrated hardware path, leaving more CPU time for the game and other applications. The best option is still the one your hardware and editor handle reliably.

NVIDIA NVENC

On a supported GeForce system, NVENC is the preferred hardware path for local recording. OBS and NVIDIA expose NVENC variants for H.264, HEVC, and AV1.

  • H.264: the broadest compatibility choice for players, editors, and upload services.
  • HEVC: can improve compression compared with H.264 when the playback and editing stack supports it.
  • AV1: NVIDIA identifies it as the highest-quality option among those listed, followed by HEVC and H.264, when the target software and hardware support AV1.

Use H.264 when you need to open the file almost anywhere. Select HEVC or AV1 only after confirming that your editor, player, and intended delivery service support the codec and that your hardware can encode it without instability.

AMD hardware encoder

OBS’s documented AMD recording baseline is CQP 16–23, a 2-second keyframe interval, the Quality preset, High profile, and zero B-frames. Start near the middle of the quality range and inspect a fast section of the recording before moving toward a lower (higher-quality, larger-file) or higher (lower-quality, smaller-file) value.

Intel Quick Sync

For Quick Sync, OBS documents ICQ 16–23, Target Usage TU4, the High profile, a 2-second keyframe interval, normal latency, and three B-frames. Quick Sync can be useful on systems where the integrated Intel GPU is available even when the discrete GPU is busy rendering the game.

x264 CPU encoding

Use x264 when hardware encoding is unavailable, incompatible with your workflow, or produces a result you specifically prefer. OBS’s documented starting point is CRF 16–23, a 2-second keyframe interval, the veryfast CPU preset, and the High profile. Watch CPU usage and frame-time stability while recording; a faster preset reduces CPU work but may reduce compression efficiency, while a slower preset demands more CPU time.

Set quality correctly: CQP, ICQ, and CRF

OBS documents a 16–23 range for its quality scales. The direction is consistent: a lower number means higher quality and larger files. A higher number saves storage at the cost of detail, especially during rapid movement.

Encoder Control Documented starting range Practical adjustment
NVENC CQP 16–23 Start around the midpoint; lower the value if motion looks blocky, raise it if files are unnecessarily large.
AMD CQP 16–23 Use the Quality preset, High profile, and zero B-frames from OBS’s baseline.
Intel Quick Sync ICQ 16–23 Use TU4, High profile, normal latency, and three B-frames from OBS’s baseline.
x264 CRF 16–23 Use veryfast first and verify CPU headroom before choosing a slower preset.

There is no universally “best” number inside that range. The same value can produce different file sizes in a quiet strategy game and a high-motion shooter. Record a representative clip containing camera turns, effects, shadows, and text. Pause on motion-heavy frames, then adjust one step at a time. Change only the quality value while diagnosing image quality; otherwise you will not know which change solved the problem.

Configure OBS step by step

  1. Open the output settings. In OBS Studio, open Settings → Output and switch the output mode to Advanced if the encoder controls are hidden.
  2. Select the Recording tab. Set the recording type to use the encoder you chose: NVENC, AMD, Quick Sync, or x264. Do not select a streaming CBR profile merely because it is familiar.
  3. Choose a quality-based rate control. Use CQP for NVENC or AMD, ICQ for Quick Sync, and CRF for x264. Begin near the middle of 16–23, then evaluate a test clip.
  4. Set the keyframe interval. Enter 2 seconds. This gives editors and playback systems regular seek points without turning the recording into a constant-bitrate stream.
  5. Apply encoder-specific options. AMD: Quality preset, High profile, zero B-frames. Quick Sync: TU4, High profile, normal latency, three B-frames. x264: veryfast preset and High profile. NVIDIA options vary by codec and driver, so retain the codec’s supported defaults unless a specific workflow requires otherwise.
  6. Open Settings → Video. Set the base (canvas) resolution to the game’s capture resolution when practical. Set the output (scaled) resolution to 1920×1080 for the default profile, or use 1280×720 when the system cannot sustain 1080p.
  7. Set common FPS values. Choose 60 for smooth gameplay when the game and OBS remain stable. Choose 30 if 60 fps produces rendering lag, skipped frames, or inconsistent frame pacing.
  8. Record a test segment. Capture the most demanding part of the game for long enough to expose stutter, then review both the OBS statistics and the resulting file. A file that looks smooth while OBS reports rendering or encoding overload still needs correction.
  9. Keep the recording on a suitable drive. Use a drive with enough free capacity and sustained write performance for the chosen quality and resolution. If the recording drive is also busy loading the game, test a separate drive.

Why 60 fps recordings lag, and what to change first

OBS must composite scenes, render overlays, capture the game, and send frames to the encoder. A game using essentially all available GPU time can prevent OBS from rendering its own frames. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance recommends reducing the workload and dropping from 60 fps to 30 fps when 60 fps is not working.

NVIDIA’s 2025 guide gives a practical warning threshold: GPU utilization above 95% can cause Windows to prioritize the game over other work, which may make recording or streaming lag. Treat 95% as a diagnostic signal, not a performance target. A game that repeatedly sits above it leaves little headroom for OBS.

Apply these fixes in order

  1. Cap the game’s frame rate. Set an in-game limit below the maximum the GPU can produce. This converts unused rendering demand into headroom for OBS.
  2. Enable V-Sync if appropriate. V-Sync can prevent the GPU from rendering unnecessary frames and may improve frame pacing. Check whether its latency characteristics suit the game.
  3. Reduce game graphics or resolution. Lower the settings that keep GPU utilization near its limit, particularly resolution, effects, shadows, and other expensive options.
  4. Use borderless windowed mode. NVIDIA lists borderless windowed mode as a mitigation for capture and scheduling problems on some systems.
  5. Run OBS as administrator. NVIDIA lists elevated OBS priority as another practical mitigation. Use it when ordinary scheduling leaves OBS without sufficient GPU time.
  6. Simplify the OBS scene. Remove unnecessary browser sources, animated overlays, filters, and high-resolution media. Every source adds compositing work.
  7. Lower output resolution. Move from 1080p to 720p if the scene and game remain too demanding.
  8. Drop from 60 to 30 fps. OBS explicitly recommends this when 60 fps is not working. A stable 30 fps clip is more useful than a nominal 60 fps recording with duplicated or missing frames.

Read OBS’s symptoms

  • Rendering lag: OBS cannot render the scene quickly enough. Reduce game GPU load, simplify the scene, lower output resolution, or run OBS as administrator.
  • Encoding lag: The selected encoder cannot compress frames fast enough. Use a hardware encoder, raise the quality number slightly, lower resolution or frame rate, or use a faster x264 preset.
  • Skipped or inconsistent frames in the game: The game itself is starved of resources. Cap its frame rate or reduce graphics before changing recording quality.
  • Audio is smooth but video stutters: Check GPU headroom and OBS statistics first; increasing bitrate or lowering the CQP/CRF number will not fix a rendering bottleneck.
  • The file stops or becomes unreadable after a crash: Record to MKV so an interrupted session does not depend on a finalized MP4 container. Remux the completed file afterward.

Choose resolution and frame rate by workload

Profile Motion result GPU/CPU demand Storage demand Use it when
1080p60 Smoothest mainstream gameplay motion Highest of the standard profiles Higher than 1080p30 at the same quality target The game, OBS, encoder, and drive remain stable.
1080p30 Clear 1080p detail with less temporal smoothness Lower than 1080p60 Lower than 1080p60 at the same quality target GPU or encoder headroom is limited but 1080p detail matters.
720p30 Acceptable fallback motion and detail Lowest of these profiles Lowest of these profiles A laptop, older GPU, or storage path cannot sustain 1080p.
1440p or 4K More detail and potentially smooth motion Substantially higher; depends on game and encoder Substantially higher Every part of the capture and editing pipeline has been verified at that resolution.

Resolution and frame rate are separate decisions. If the game is sharp but motion is unstable, keep 1080p and move to 30 fps. If motion is acceptable but the system cannot handle 1080p, move to 720p30. Do not jump to 1440p or 4K solely because the monitor supports it; the encoder and recording drive must sustain the output continuously.

Recording format and codec: protect the master, then edit

Record to MKV

Use MKV as the local recording container for the master file. If OBS or the computer stops unexpectedly, MKV is less dependent on a final container-writing step than MP4. This makes it the safer choice for long sessions and experimental settings.

Remux to MP4 when required

Some editors or services require MP4. After recording, use OBS’s remux function to change the container without re-encoding the video: open File → Remux Recordings, select the MKV file, choose the destination, and start the remux. Remuxing is a container operation, so it should be far faster than rendering the entire video again. Keep the original MKV until the MP4 has opened correctly in the target editor.

Match codec to the next application

  • H.264: choose it when compatibility is the priority. NVIDIA identifies it as the most broadly compatible option.
  • HEVC: choose it for improved compression when your editor, player, and hardware support it.
  • AV1: choose it for the best quality among NVIDIA’s listed recording codecs when the entire workflow supports AV1. Newer codec support in the encoder does not guarantee support in an older editor.

Codec choice affects more than file size. A highly compressed file that your editor cannot decode is less useful than a larger H.264 master that opens immediately. Verify support before committing an entire session to HEVC or AV1.

Why streaming bitrate numbers do not set recording quality

Streaming and local recording solve different problems. A livestream must fit a service’s upload and ingest limits, so it commonly uses constant bitrate. A local recording can vary its data rate with scene complexity and is better served by CQP, ICQ, or CRF.

NVIDIA’s guide identifies 6000 Kbps as Twitch’s current maximum bitrate at the time of its crawl. That is a Twitch streaming-service limit, not a universal target for local recording. Applying 6000 Kbps CBR to a fast 1080p60 game can create unnecessary artifacts; applying a much higher fixed value can waste storage during simple scenes. Use the quality control your encoder provides and let the scene determine the instantaneous data rate.

Plan storage from the actual recording

Quality-based recording does not produce one fixed bitrate, so capacity depends on the game, codec, quality value, resolution, frame rate, and duration. Measure a representative clip, note its file size and running time, and scale that result to the planned session. Keep extra space for temporary remuxed files and editing caches. Lowering the quality number improves image quality but increases both the measured file size and the required sustained write capacity.

Laptop and multi-GPU capture checks

Modern laptops often have an integrated GPU for desktop work and a discrete GPU for 3D games. OBS notes that Game Capture and Window Capture should run on the GPU associated with the game. If OBS is assigned to the other GPU, capture may fail, show a black window, or perform poorly.

  1. Identify which GPU the game uses in Windows graphics settings or the GPU vendor’s control panel.
  2. Assign OBS as a High performance app so Game Capture or Window Capture can operate on the same GPU as the game.
  3. Restart OBS after changing the assignment, then test capture before recording a long session.
  4. If the laptop offers a hybrid graphics switch, test both the game’s GPU assignment and OBS’s assignment together; a mismatch is more important than simply choosing the faster GPU by name.

Integrated graphics can still be useful for Quick Sync encoding, but capture and rendering must be tested on the actual laptop configuration. Do not assume that moving OBS to the discrete GPU is always best if it leaves no headroom for the game.

AMD system that is stable at 1080p60

Use 1920×1080 at 60 fps, AMD CQP near the middle of 16–23, the Quality preset, High profile, zero B-frames, a 2-second keyframe interval, and MKV. Review rapid motion and adjust the CQP value rather than copying a streaming bitrate.

Intel system using Quick Sync

Use ICQ near the middle of 16–23, TU4, High profile, normal latency, three B-frames, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Select 1080p60 only if the game and integrated or discrete GPU combination remains smooth; otherwise use 1080p30 or 720p30.

CPU-limited or hardware-encoder-incompatible system

Start with x264 CRF near the middle of 16–23, the veryfast preset, High profile, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Watch CPU usage during the heaviest gameplay. If encoding lag appears, move to a faster workload profile—30 fps or 720p30—before trying a slower x264 preset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A repeatable test procedure

  1. Load the game section that produces the highest GPU usage and most rapid motion.
  2. Close unnecessary applications and disable scene sources you do not need for the test.
  3. Record 30–60 seconds using the chosen encoder, quality value, resolution, frame rate, and MKV container.
  4. Review OBS’s statistics for rendering lag, encoding lag, and dropped frames.
  5. Watch the file at normal speed and frame-by-frame through camera turns, particles, foliage, and dark scenes.
  6. If the image is clean and motion is stable, keep the profile. If the file is too large, raise the quality number one step. If detail is lost, lower it one step.
  7. If motion is unstable, correct GPU or CPU overload first. Use frame-rate caps, lower game settings, a simpler scene, lower output resolution, or 30 fps.
  8. Open the MKV in the intended editor, remux a copy to MP4 if necessary, and verify that the complete workflow works before a long recording.

Final checklist before recording a long session

  • Output is 1920×1080 at 60 fps, or a deliberate fallback of 1080p30 or 720p30.
  • The encoder matches the hardware: NVENC, AMD, Quick Sync, or x264.
  • Rate control is CQP, ICQ, or CRF rather than a copied streaming CBR value.
  • The quality value is within OBS’s 16–23 documented starting range and has been checked on motion-heavy footage.
  • Keyframe interval is 2 seconds.
  • Codec compatibility has been confirmed for the editor and player; H.264 is the safe compatibility choice.
  • Container is MKV, with remuxing planned only if the editor requires MP4.
  • Game GPU utilization has headroom; if it is repeatedly above 95%, cap FPS or reduce load.
  • On a laptop, OBS and the game are assigned to compatible GPUs.
  • The recording drive has free capacity and sufficient sustained write performance.

The best setting is the fastest stable profile

Start with 1080p60 and hardware encoding, then tune the quality value from the middle of OBS’s 16–23 range. Keep MKV as the local master and use H.264 when compatibility matters more than compression efficiency. If the recording is not smooth, reclaim GPU or CPU headroom first; a stable 1080p30 or 720p30 clip is preferable to a nominal 1080p60 file with dropped or duplicated frames.
