There is no evidence-based “best” commercial host to name for SCP: Secret Laboratory in 2026. Current plan prices, locations, CPU and memory allocations, plugin policies, backups, and support terms have not been verified consistently enough for a defensible ranking. The safer choice is a host that can document the game’s requirements, gives you the file and plugin access your server needs, and operates near your players.
This guide shows how to evaluate a managed host, when self-hosting is the better fit, and how to check compatibility with Northwood’s dedicated-server software and official modding framework.

Our top pick: Godlike.Host
If you want a managed service, our top pick for SCP: Secret Laboratory is Godlike.Host. It runs SCP: SL servers from its own Pterodactyl-based game panel, with SFTP/FTP access, a task scheduler, sub-users with permissions, up to three free backups a day with restore, and free DDoS protection. It has 10 data-center locations (US West Coast, US East Coast, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Poland, Ukraine, Finland and Singapore) and 24/7 support by live chat or ticket. Plans can be upgraded or downgraded from the panel with prorated billing; see the current plans, and run the checklist below with its support team before you buy.
What “best” means for an SCP: Secret Laboratory server
For this game, hosting quality is more than a monthly price. A suitable service must install the official dedicated server, provide enough consistently allocated CPU and RAM for your planned population, place the machine close enough to players for acceptable latency, and let you administer the files and plugins you actually intend to use.

Those details vary by provider and by plan. A listing that says “SCP:SL supported” may still impose limits on file access, plugin installation, updates, backups, or network protection. Treat every marketing claim as unverified until it appears in the provider’s current documentation or a written pre-sales answer.
The official references establish how to install and license the server, but they do not identify a preferred commercial host. That makes a requirements-based purchase checklist more reliable than a ranked list.
Official resource requirements and their limits
Northwood’s dedicated-server guide gives a documented minimum for a server that is full at a 25-player cap and has no plugins or modifications:
Recommended Free Tools
| Resource | Documented minimum | Scope of the figure | Question for a host |
|---|---|---|---|
| Memory | 3 GB RAM | 25-player cap, no plugins or modifications | How much RAM is reserved for my instance, and is it dedicated or shared? |
| Processor | 2 CPU cores | Same official baseline; not a performance guarantee | What CPU model, clock policy, and allocation does the plan provide? |
| Storage | 4 GB | Baseline server installation, not a complete backup or log budget | How much disk space is included, and are backups counted against it? |
These numbers are a starting point, not a promise of smooth play for a larger population, a heavily modified server, multiple instances, or an unusually busy configuration. The guide does not publish a tested resource target for those cases, and no independent benchmark is established here. Ask a provider what allocation it will guarantee rather than assuming that a plan’s advertised maximum is equivalent to a tested capacity.
Also ask whether “RAM” means an upper limit, a guaranteed reservation, or burstable memory. A server that is killed when it reaches a shared host’s limit can look like a game crash even when the software itself is healthy.
Managed hosting or self-hosting?
Managed hosting
A managed service supplies the virtual or physical machine and usually wraps installation, startup, console access, and billing in a control panel. It is attractive when you want to run a community without maintaining an operating system, SteamCMD updates, firewall rules, and recovery procedures yourself.
- Advantages: quicker deployment, a web console, provider-side hardware maintenance, and a support channel.
- Risks: restricted file access, unsupported plugins, opaque CPU sharing, extra charges for backups or additional storage, and renewal prices that differ from an introductory offer.
- Before paying: obtain written confirmation that you can upload and edit the configuration files, install your intended plugins, view logs, restart the process, and restore a backup.
Self-hosting
Self-hosting means installing the official dedicated server on a machine you control, such as a home server, rented virtual machine, or dedicated machine. You choose the operating system and have direct access to files, logs, and plugins, but you are responsible for security updates, network configuration, monitoring, and recovery.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Advantages: complete administrative control, no host-specific plugin restrictions, and freedom to automate updates and backups.
- Costs and work: you supply the hardware or rental, protect the operating system, configure access for players, and diagnose outages without a host’s support team.
If your group needs a single lightly customized server and you are comfortable administering Linux or Windows, self-hosting can be straightforward. If you need a support desk, a control panel, or a geographically distributed community, managed hosting may save time—provided its restrictions are acceptable.

Operating-system compatibility in 2026
Northwood’s October 11, 2024 system-requirements announcement lists these server platforms from update 14.0:
- Windows 10 or Windows 11, version 21H1 or newer, 64-bit
- Windows Server 2022 or newer, 64-bit
- Ubuntu 22.04 or newer, 64-bit
The announcement is dated 2024 and followed the move to Unity 6. Do not treat it as a guarantee that this is the complete compatibility list for every 2026 release. Check the latest Northwood release notes and the host’s image catalogue before ordering. Confirm the operating system’s architecture as well as its version; a 32-bit image does not satisfy an x64 requirement.
For a managed service, ask whether the provider installs the current dedicated-server build or expects you to upload it. For self-hosting, use a supported 64-bit operating system and keep a recovery path available before applying a major game or OS update.

How to install the official dedicated server
Northwood’s server guide documents installation through Steam’s dedicated-server tool or SteamCMD. The dedicated server is distributed under Steam app ID 996560. The exact screens and package names can change, so use the current guide as the authority when labels differ.
- Prepare the machine. Choose a supported 64-bit Windows or Ubuntu environment, create an administrator account for server maintenance, and reserve enough disk space for the installation, logs, configuration, and backups.
- Install SteamCMD or the dedicated-server tool. On a managed host, confirm whether this step is already completed and whether you receive access to the installation directory.
- Select the installation directory. Use a path that is included in your backup plan and that your service account can read and write.
- Download the server with app ID 996560. In SteamCMD, sign in as instructed by the current Northwood guide and run the documented app-update procedure for that ID. Do not substitute the client game’s app ID.
- Run the server once. Watch the console and log output for missing libraries, permission errors, or an immediate exit. Stop it cleanly before editing configuration files.
- Configure administration and gameplay. Apply the settings documented by Northwood for your desired player cap, access controls, and server name. Keep a copy of the original files so a bad edit can be reversed.
- Test with a small group. Verify that players can connect, administrators can use the intended controls, logs are being written, and a restart returns the server to a known state.
Do not expose management interfaces to the public internet simply to make administration convenient. Use the host’s access controls or a secured remote-management method, and remove temporary test credentials.
Plugins, LabAPI, and file access
The Northwood Studios LabAPI repository describes LabAPI as the official server-side modding framework and states that dedicated-server builds bundle a compiled LabAPI.dll. That establishes the framework’s place in the official distribution; it does not mean that every managed host permits arbitrary plugins or file changes.
Before selecting a plan, write down the exact administrative workflow your community needs:

Ask the host to confirm compatibility with your intended LabAPI version and update process. A provider that offers only a one-click vanilla installation may be fine for an unmodified server, but it is not automatically suitable for a plugin-heavy community.

Provider comparison checklist
Use the following worksheet for every shortlisted provider. Record the answer, the URL or support-ticket reference, and the date, because plans and policies change.
| Decision area | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Game installation | Official SCP:SL dedicated-server build, installation method, and update controls | Prevents an obsolete or unofficial package from becoming the foundation of the server |
| CPU and RAM | Exact allocation, whether resources are shared, and any throttling policy | The official minimum is scoped to a specific vanilla 25-player case, not every workload |
| Capacity | Advertised player count and the conditions behind it | A sales maximum is not the same as a documented or tested capacity |
| Location | Datacenter city or region and available relocation options | Distance and routing influence player latency |
| Files and plugins | Full file manager or SFTP access, LabAPI/plugin policy, and restart controls | Determines whether you can operate a customized server |
| Backups | Frequency, retention, storage location, restore procedure, and extra cost | A backup is useful only if it can be restored when the server fails |
| Network protection | DDoS mitigation scope, traffic limits, and what happens during an attack | Protection terms differ substantially between providers |
| Support | Support hours, response targets, and whether game-specific issues are covered | Clarifies who handles an outage or failed update |
| Billing | Recurring price, renewal price, billing period, taxes, cancellation, and data-export terms | An introductory price may not be the ongoing cost |
Reject a provider that will not state the allocation or refuses to explain how you retrieve your files. Transparent limits are easier to plan around than an attractive but undefined “unlimited” plan.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Capacity planning without overpromising
Start with the official baseline only if your use case matches its conditions: a full 25-player cap with no plugins or modifications. If any of those conditions change, treat the result as an unmeasured workload. More players, plugins, verbose logging, multiple server instances, or concurrent maintenance jobs can alter CPU, memory, and storage demand.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Ask for a temporary upgrade or a monitoring period rather than accepting a provider’s unsupported player-count claim. During a trial, record memory usage, CPU saturation, restart frequency, tick or frame warnings shown by the server, and connection complaints at peak activity. Those observations are operational evidence for your community, not a universal benchmark.
Leave room for logs and backups. The documented storage figure describes the baseline installation; it does not establish how much space your retained logs, plugin data, crash dumps, or backup copies will consume.
Updates, backups, and routine administration
Update safely
- Announce a maintenance window to players.
- Stop the server cleanly and copy configuration, plugin, and permission files.
- Update the dedicated-server installation using the provider’s documented method or SteamCMD.
- Start the server and inspect logs before reopening it to the public.
- If a plugin fails, disable that plugin first and confirm whether its version supports the updated server build.
Back up what you can restore
At minimum, preserve configuration files, plugin files, plugin data, administrator permissions, and any custom server content. A provider snapshot that cannot be downloaded or restored to a new instance is not a complete exit plan. Test a restore before you need one.
Monitor basic health
- Process state and restart count
- Available disk space and log growth
- Memory pressure or out-of-memory termination
- CPU saturation during peak player activity
- Successful backup completion
Licensing and prohibited server emulation
The SCP: Secret Laboratory EULA identifies the dedicated server as the special server version distributed under Steam app ID 996560 and permits loading the software on devices under your control, subject to the license. The EULA also prohibits developing, hosting, distributing, sharing, or using an “Emulated Central Server.”

This article does not interpret rights beyond the EULA’s express wording. A host cannot make a prohibited arrangement compliant merely by advertising it as a server package.
Troubleshooting common hosting failures
| Symptom | Likely checks |
|---|---|
| Server will not start | Confirm the supported 64-bit OS, installation files, service-account permissions, and the first error in the server log. Ask the host whether its image is current. |
| Players cannot connect | Check that the process is running, the provider has exposed the required game traffic, and any network protection or firewall rule is not blocking it. Use the host’s documented port and firewall instructions rather than guessing. |
| Crashes begin after a plugin install | Stop the server, restore the last known-good plugin set, and verify the plugin’s compatibility with the installed LabAPI and game build. |
| Memory warnings or restarts | Compare actual usage with the plan’s guaranteed allocation, review logs and plugin load, and request a larger allocation or remove unnecessary modifications. |
| Update breaks configuration | Restore the pre-update copy, compare changed settings with the current guide, and ask the host whether it can roll back the server files. |
| Backups exist but cannot be used | Request a test restore, confirm retention and storage location, and maintain an independent copy of critical configuration and plugin data. |
A purchase decision you can defend
- Define the target player cap, whether the server will be vanilla or modified, and which administrators need access.
- Use the official baseline only when your workload matches its stated conditions.
- Shortlist hosts that document supported operating systems and the official installation path.
- Get written answers on CPU/RAM allocation, location, file access, LabAPI/plugin policy, backups, network protection, support, and renewal billing.
- Choose the plan with transparent guarantees and an acceptable recovery process—not merely the lowest introductory price.
- Run a controlled test, retain your own configuration backup, and document how to cancel or migrate.
For readers who prefer complete control, install the official server on a supported machine and follow Northwood’s guide. For readers who prefer convenience, our top pick is Godlike.Host, and any managed host, including it, is appropriate only after it confirms the exact administrative access and resource allocation your server requires. On the available evidence, that is the most reliable way to choose SCP: Secret Laboratory hosting in 2026 without pretending that an unverified provider ranking is a fact.
