The best INSPIRE Awards-MANAK entry is not the most elaborate working model. It is an original, science-and-technology-based solution to a clearly observed problem, built for a specific user and tested against the method that user relies on now. A strong entry explains what is different, measures whether it helps, and shows that another household, school, farmer or local body could use it.

Use the ideas below as starting directions, not as ready-made recipes. INSPIRE-MANAK rewards the student’s own observation and design decisions, so every concept must be adapted to a real location, user and failure pattern.

What INSPIRE-MANAK judges are looking for

INSPIRE-MANAK is implemented by India’s Department of Science and Technology (DST) with the National Innovation Foundation (NIF). Its official guidance makes a critical distinction: “It is to be understood that INSPIRE MANAK is a Science and Technology-based Innovation competition, NOT a Science Project competition.” A textbook demonstration, decorative model or copied internet build can explain a scientific principle without being an innovation.

Selection discussions focus on novelty, social applicability, environmental friendliness or implications, user-friendliness and comparative advantage over existing technologies. The programme FAQ also refers to potential impact, the possibility of diffusion through commercial or non-commercial channels and relevance to government schemes. Convert those criteria into five questions before choosing an idea.

  1. Who is the user and what is the pain point? Name the person, place and task. “Farmers” is too broad; “vegetable growers in our village who carry a backpack sprayer across uneven beds” is testable.
  2. What is the new mechanism or meaningful improvement? Identify the part that changes the action, force, sequence, material or maintenance method. A different colour or a sensor added to a familiar circuit is not automatically novel.
  3. What benefit can be measured? Select a variable such as lifting effort, time, water consumed, waste contamination, exposure to a hazard, breakdowns or operating cost. Compare it with the existing workaround.
  4. Does it fit the setting? Consider safety, repairability, local materials, user strength, weather, electricity availability and the skills needed to operate it.
  5. Could it spread? Explain how another user could understand, afford, repair and adopt the design without depending on the student.

How the INSPIRE-MANAK pathway works

Schools nominate original ideas, which move through district and state exhibitions before a national exhibition and further selection. The current programme description says a school can nominate five best original ideas, with no more than two ideas from Classes 11–12 science stream. Rules and counts can change by financial year, so the school’s nomination notice and the official portal should be checked for the applicable cycle.

Programme detail What the published description says How to use it
School nominations Five best original ideas per school; a maximum of two may be from Classes 11–12 science stream. Ask the school to rank ideas on originality and evidence, not on model decoration.
Award amount ₹10,000 per selected idea. Plan a safe prototype and the cost of taking the model to the district exhibition.
National exhibition Top 1,000 ideas are shown at the National Level Exhibition. Make the mechanism understandable to a visitor who has not seen the local problem.
National shortlisting Top 60 are shortlisted for national awards and future direction. Keep test records, drawings and iteration notes that support the claim of improvement.
Long-term target The DST scheme overview describes a target of one million original ideas. Treat originality and wide social usefulness as central, rather than trying to imitate a previous winner.

The programme page also describes mentoring for prototype development at later exhibition stages. Top ideas may be considered for product or process development and linkage with other DST/NIF schemes. These are programme possibilities, not a promise that every selected model will become a product.

Eight strong directions for an original idea

Each direction below becomes a credible entry only after the student documents a local observation, checks prior art and measures the proposed improvement. The examples deliberately describe a problem and design question rather than prescribing a copyable model.

1. Reduce strain in one farm task

Observe a single operation such as lifting a water container, pumping, carrying harvested produce or spraying a particular crop. Record how far the worker walks, how often a load is lifted, which posture causes discomfort and where a backpack, hose or wheel catches.

A useful mechanism might redistribute weight, use a lever or wheel, change the nozzle position, or allow one person to perform a task that normally requires two. An official winning concept, the “Multipurpose Agriculture Wheel Sprayer and Water Sprinkling System,” addressed the strain and pressure problems of backpack sprayers. The lesson is not to copy that title; it is to investigate the different strain pattern in your own field and design for it.

  • Measure: time to cover a fixed bed, number of refills, load lifted, distance carried, spills and user-rated exertion.
  • Compare: the current tool under the same crop, terrain, volume and weather conditions.
  • Originality test: explain what your wheel, support, pumping arrangement or control method does that common sprayers do not.

2. Move water without dependable electricity

Start where electricity is unavailable, unreliable or too costly for a small water-lifting job. Interview the person who currently lowers a bucket, operates a hand pump or waits for a power supply. Measure the depth, water volume needed per day and the effort required.

A mechanical design could use a counterweight, a swing action, a lever, a pedal or another locally repairable arrangement. An official winner called “Mechanical Swing Pump” was intended to lift groundwater without electricity or conventional manual pumping. A new entry must address a distinct local constraint—such as operator height, well geometry, maintenance access or intermittent flow—and demonstrate why its mechanism is better there.

  • Measure: litres delivered per minute, strokes or cycles, operator effort, time to prime, leakage and maintenance tasks.
  • Safety: guard pinch points, secure the structure and test it with an adult supervisor.
  • Adoption question: can a local repairer make replacement parts from materials available in the area?

3. Make one drain or culvert easier to maintain

Do not begin with a generic “smart drainage” model. Visit a particular school drain, culvert or wastewater channel after rain and document what blocks it: plastic at an inlet, silt at a bend, leaves under a grate or a difficult-to-reach inspection point.

Design a removable collection, inspection or cleaning mechanism that targets that blockage pattern. The innovation could be a trap that can be lifted without entering the drain, a visual indicator that shows when a basket is full, or a coupling that lets a worker flush a bend from a safe position.

  • Measure: time needed to identify a blockage, time to remove it, contact with dirty water, mass of material captured and frequency of overflow.
  • Test: use safe surrogate materials in a controlled channel before any field trial.
  • Show: how the mechanism is removed, cleaned and reinstalled without special equipment.

4. Co-design an assistive everyday device

Work with an elderly person, a person with a disability or a worker who has a specific difficulty with grip, reach, visibility or mobility. Ask permission before observing and let the user describe what is hard, unsafe or tiring. A general “helping device for disabled people” is not a defined problem.

Possible directions include a utensil grip for a particular hand limitation, a reach aid for a high shelf, a visual or tactile marker for a control, or a stable support for a recurring transfer. The user should influence the dimensions, force and operating sequence.

  • Measure: time to complete the chosen task, number of dropped items, assistance required, force or reach distance and the user’s own comfort rating.
  • Fit: test different sizes and materials; avoid edges, pinch points and sudden loads.
  • Evidence: record what changed between versions and why the user preferred one design.

5. Improve one waste-handling failure

Choose one defined waste stream—such as food scraps, sanitary waste, plastic packaging or workshop offcuts—and one point where the current system fails. The failure might be contamination during sorting, unsafe temporary storage, awkward lifting or missed collection.

A credible device may change the container opening, provide a low-contact transfer, separate a troublesome pair of materials or show when a bin needs service. “Turning waste into energy” is too broad unless the student has a novel, testable process with controlled inputs and a safe way to handle outputs.

  • Measure: contamination by mass, sorting time, spills, odour complaints, collection effort or storage duration.
  • Control variables: use similar quantities and the same sorting conditions for old and new methods.
  • Environmental check: include the material’s durability, cleaning needs and end-of-life disposal.

6. Make water use reliable in a specific setting

Look for a narrow failure such as an overflowing rooftop tank at a school, a leak hidden behind a particular pipe run, a blocked filter access point or a watering schedule that fails when staff are absent. Measure when and why the failure occurs.

Ordinary rainwater harvesting, filtration, water-level indicators and sensor irrigation appear on the official repeated-ideas list. They need a genuinely new, documented contribution to be credible—for example, a maintenance mechanism that solves a local access problem or a non-electronic indicator designed for a setting where existing indicators fail.

  • Measure: water lost, time to detect the fault, inspection time, false alerts and repair frequency.
  • Design for service: make the sensing or inspection part reachable, cleanable and replaceable.
  • Document context: state the tank size, user, installation constraints and weather conditions.

7. Address one school or public-space hazard

Observe a specific hazard: a slippery step during rain, a blind corner near a gate, a hot surface, an exposed cable or a corridor that becomes dark when a fixture fails. A generic burglar, gas, fire or women-safety alarm is a frequent submission and needs a distinct context and mechanism to stand out.

Choose a passive or active design whose operation can be tested. A passive guard, high-contrast physical marker, fail-safe shutoff or locally visible warning may be more appropriate than adding another alarm.

  • Measure: detection time, warning visibility, false alarms, response time and whether the hazard actually changes.
  • Safety boundary: do not test with live mains electricity, fire, gas leaks or hazardous chemicals; use supervised simulations.
  • User fit: check that the intervention does not block an accessible route or create a new trip hazard.

8. Improve a routine task in a public institution

Schools, clinics, libraries and local offices contain repeated, measurable problems: moving attendance registers, sanitising shared equipment, storing examination materials, managing queues or locating a frequently misplaced tool. Interview the person who performs the task and observe it at busy and quiet times.

The design should alter a physical or procedural bottleneck, not merely add a decorative display. A modular holder, one-handed dispensing arrangement, visual workflow aid or low-cost mechanical counter could be suitable if it solves a documented failure and is easier to maintain than the current practice.

  • Measure: queue time, steps per task, misplaced items, rework, consumables used and cleaning time.
  • Check adoption: ask whether staff can operate it during the busiest period and repair it with available tools.

Ideas to avoid or treat as high-risk

The official repeated-ideas document lists many concepts that appear so often that a routine version is unlikely to demonstrate novelty:

  • ordinary rainwater harvesting, water purification and water-level indicators;
  • standard drip or sensor irrigation, hydroponics and automatic plant watering;
  • windmills, solar cookers, solar lights and basic smart street lights;
  • waste-to-energy, biogas, footstep electricity and broad “green energy” models;
  • generic home automation;
  • common burglar, gas, fire and women-safety alarm devices.

The teachers’ handbook also warns against projects taken from science books, DIY books, websites or YouTube; simple demonstrations of the carbon or water cycle, food chains, photosynthesis, the solar system, volcanoes and similar textbook concepts; and common ready-made sensor or RFID builds. These subjects can still supply background science, but the nomination must centre on a student-originated intervention for a real user.

Turn an observation into a nomination

Use the following sequence before buying components. It prevents a familiar online model from becoming the project by default.

  1. Write a one-sentence problem statement. Name the user, setting, task and failure: “The caretaker at ___ spends ___ minutes clearing ___ after rain because ___.”
  2. Record the current method. Take dated notes, measurements or photographs where appropriate. Describe tools, time, effort, materials, hazards and maintenance, not just the final inconvenience.
  3. Ask the user what a successful change would look like. A faster process may be unacceptable if it is harder to clean, less safe or unaffordable.
  4. Check prior art. Search school project collections, patents, product catalogues and ordinary local practice. If the mechanism already exists, identify the exact local limitation your design addresses instead of claiming the whole idea as new.
  5. Sketch two or three mechanisms. Draw force paths, moving parts, user contact points and maintenance access. Reject the option that merely copies a familiar build.
  6. State the novel feature in one sentence. For example: “A removable basket can be lifted from ground level, so the cleaner does not enter the drain.” The statement must describe a mechanism, not an adjective such as “smart” or “advanced.”
  7. Build a safe, low-cost prototype. Use inexpensive materials for the first version, label dimensions and keep a record of changes. Do not conceal a weakness with paint or a presentation board.
  8. Test against the existing workaround. Keep the task, quantity, operator and conditions as similar as possible. Record failures as well as successful runs.
  9. Iterate with the user. Change one important feature at a time where practical, then explain why the new version is better suited to the setting.
  10. Prepare the nomination evidence. Include the problem statement, observation record, mechanism sketch, novelty explanation, comparison data, safety measures, cost and a plan for adoption.

How to test and compare the prototype

A small, honest test is stronger than an unsupported percentage claim. Create a log with a date, operator, conditions, input quantity, old-method result, prototype result, failures and notes. Repeat enough trials to reveal variation and report the actual number of trials; do not present a single demonstration as a general performance guarantee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Comparison axis What to record Question it answers
Effectiveness Output, completion time, blockage removed, water delivered or task success. Does the device solve the intended problem?
Effort Loads lifted, cycles, walking distance, force, posture or assistance needed. Is the task easier for the named user?
Safety Exposed hazards, spills, contact, stability and supervised near-misses. Does the intervention avoid creating a greater risk?
Environmental impact Water, energy, consumables, waste and replacement parts. Is the improvement environmentally sensible over its useful life?
Repairability Tools, skills, parts and time needed for cleaning or repair. Can the local user keep it working?
Affordability Prototype materials and likely recurring costs, clearly labelled as estimates. Could the intended user realistically adopt it?
Reliability Failures, false alerts, jams and performance under changed conditions. Does it work beyond one favourable demonstration?
Ease of adoption Training time, physical fit, space and compatibility with existing routines. Would another user actually choose it?

Keep the old and new methods under the same conditions wherever possible. If conditions differ, say so and limit the conclusion. Do not claim a percentage improvement unless the student has measured it and can show the calculation.

Give the project a precise title and explanation

A title should tell a reviewer what the device or action does. “Agriculture,” “Digital India” or “Smart Village” describes a theme, not an innovation. A stronger pattern is mechanism + user or setting + problem solved, such as “Ground-level removable silt basket for the east-side school drain” or “Counterweighted crate carrier for harvesting on sloped vegetable beds.”

The explanation should answer four questions in order:

  1. What happens now, and who is affected?
  2. What mechanism did the student change or create?
  3. What evidence shows a benefit over the current method?
  4. What would another user need to adopt, repair and maintain it?

Use photographs or diagrams to show the observed setting and prototype stages, while protecting people’s privacy and obtaining permission. A clear failure record can demonstrate genuine incubation: the teachers’ handbook describes “incubation of innovative projects” as an important aspect of INSPIRE-MANAK. The project should show how testing changed the design, not pretend that the first version was perfect.

Adapting the idea to Classes 6–10 and Classes 11–12

Students in Classes 6–10 can choose a problem with a manageable test and explain the mechanism with clear measurements. A simple lever, storage redesign or passive safety feature can be innovative when it is built around a specific user and local evidence. The project does not need advanced coding or expensive laboratory equipment.

Students in Classes 11–12 science stream may submit ideas under the programme’s school nomination limit, but a more complex circuit or mathematical model does not substitute for novelty. Use the additional technical knowledge to quantify forces, flow, energy, materials or reliability, then connect those calculations to the user’s actual need. The same originality and social-applicability tests apply.

Funding, exhibitions and practical planning

The FAQ states that the award money includes the cost of making the project or model and bringing it to the district exhibition or display competition. Treat ₹10,000 as the published award amount per selected idea for the described programme cycle; confirm the current notice before budgeting. List prototype materials, protective equipment, transport, packaging and any replacement parts, and keep receipts where the school requests them.

Build a transportable model that can be demonstrated safely without a water spill, sharp exposed part, unstable frame or inaccessible power supply. Prepare a one-minute explanation, a longer technical explanation and the comparison log. At an exhibition, a reviewer should be able to see the user, the old difficulty, the new mechanism and the measured difference in that order.

  • The observation is recorded with measurements, dates or photographs where appropriate.
  • The mechanism is student-originated or contains a clearly documented improvement over prior art.
  • The project is more than a textbook demonstration or ready-made sensor build.
  • At least one meaningful comparison with the existing method is recorded.
  • Safety risks, supervision and failure modes are addressed.
  • Materials, maintenance, repair and likely adoption are realistic for the setting.
  • Environmental effects are considered beyond the first demonstration.
  • The title names the device or action precisely.
  • The school has checked the current financial-year portal rules, nomination limits and exhibition requirements.
