Use Satisfactory Mod Manager (SMM) to install Satisfactory mods on PC. Launch the game once, install SMM from ficsit.app or smm.ficsit.app, let it detect your Steam or Epic installation, and use the download arrow beside a mod. SMM places the mod, its dependencies, and Satisfactory Mod Loader (SML) in the correct folders; you should not unzip files manually. The recommendations below cover quality-of-life, factory-building, power, visual, difficulty, and full-overhaul choices, plus dedicated-server and console limitations.
What is the best way to install Satisfactory mods?
On Windows or Linux, Satisfactory Mod Manager is the practical installation route. It downloads the selected mod, resolves dependencies, installs SML when needed, and keeps the files in the locations Satisfactory expects. Mods are distributed through ficsit.app and SMM rather than Steam Workshop. The official Satisfactory Modding Documentation requires one preliminary step: run Satisfactory to its title screen at least once so the game creates its installation and configuration structure.
Third-party 2026 coverage described these recommendations as current for the Satisfactory 1.2 update. It is a consensus-style selection, not an official Coffee Stain Studios ranking. Compatibility can change after a game or SML update, so open each mod’s page before updating either the game or the mod.

- PC edition: The documented workflow covers Steam and Epic installations on PC. Console support is not confirmed.
- A first launch: Start Satisfactory normally and reach the title screen once before opening SMM.
- Current SMM build: Download only from ficsit.app or smm.ficsit.app. The latter selects the appropriate build from the latest GitHub release for your browser.
- Compatibility check: Read the mod page for the game version, SML requirement, dependencies, multiplayer notes, and update status. SML and large mods can trail a major game update by days or weeks.
- Backups: Copy important save files before adding an overhaul or changing a heavily modded world. Keep an unmodded save available if you need to troubleshoot.
- Enough disk space: Leave room for SMM’s downloads, dependency files, and any backups; no single universal size requirement is published.
How to install Satisfactory mods with SMM
1. Launch Satisfactory once
Open the game from Steam or Epic and wait until the title screen appears. You do not have to start a new factory. Exit the game normally after the title screen has loaded. This creates the paths SMM needs to find.

2. Download Satisfactory Mod Manager
Use either ficsit.app or smm.ficsit.app. On Windows, the package can also be installed from Windows Package Manager with:
winget install SatisfactoryModding.SatisfactoryModManagerIf your browser warns that the installer is “not commonly downloaded,” verify that you used one of those official distribution addresses and choose Keep to retain the file. Do not obtain an installer from an unrelated mirror.
3. Handle operating-system prompts
Windows may ask for confirmation before running the installer. On Linux, SMM is supplied as an AppImage. If it does not start, mark the file executable in your file manager’s permissions dialog or run:
chmod +x SatisfactoryModManager.AppImageUse the exact filename you downloaded if it differs. Then launch the AppImage again.
4. Let SMM locate the game
Open SMM after Satisfactory has closed. Guides for the current manager report automatic detection for Steam and Epic installations. If more than one installation is present, select the instance you intend to mod before downloading anything. The manager’s profile or game selector should show the chosen installation.
5. Install a mod
- Browse or search for the mod in SMM.
- Check its page for the supported Satisfactory version, SML requirement, dependencies, and multiplayer instructions.
- Click the download arrow beside the mod.
- Allow SMM to fetch the mod, SML, and any listed dependencies.
- Wait for the operation to finish before launching the game. A large overhaul can take longer because it may include several dependencies.
SMM performs the file placement. Do not extract a downloaded archive into the game directory unless a mod’s own documentation explicitly describes a separate manual procedure. For ordinary SMM-managed mods, manual unzipping can create duplicate or misplaced files.

6. Start the modded game
Use SMM’s launch control, or launch Satisfactory through the method recommended by the current SMM build. On the first start, allow extra time while SML and the selected mods initialize. If the game reaches the menu, create or load a test save before committing a long-running factory to the new setup.

There is no official “best” list or published adoption statistic for Satisfactory mods. The choices below are organized by what they change, which makes it easier to select a small, compatible set instead of installing everything at once.

Smart!: automate repetitive connections
Smart! is aimed at players who want less manual work when extending a production line. One 2026 guide illustrates its behavior by placing 10 constructors in a row and having power, belts and pipes connect automatically. That example describes the mod’s appeal, not a guarantee that every layout or building combination will connect without adjustment. Check the current mod page for supported building types and multiplayer requirements before enabling it in a shared world.
Satisfactory Plus: choose a longer, tougher progression
Satisfactory Plus overhauls materials and recipes rather than merely adding a few machines. Expect a substantially different production plan and a longer progression path. It is best installed for a new playthrough, because a save built around the base game’s recipes may not map cleanly to the overhaul’s item and recipe changes. Treat it as a separate profile from convenience mods until you confirm compatibility.
Refined Power: expand the energy system
Refined Power adds more than 30 energy-generating buildings, according to a 2026 PCGamesN listing. It suits players who enjoy designing generation capacity, fuel chains and power infrastructure. Because it changes the power-building set, verify the supported game version and any dependency notes before adding it to an existing factory.

Difficulty Tuner: adjust rules without a total conversion
Difficulty Tuner provides presets that alter extraction speed, building costs and inventory size. It is a useful middle ground between the default rules and a complete overhaul. Pick one preset intentionally, document it for anyone joining your game, and avoid switching repeatedly in the middle of a production plan: changing extraction or cost assumptions can invalidate an optimized factory.
Structural Solutions: build a larger architectural vocabulary
Structural Solutions supplies more than 300 new buildings for factory styling. It targets visual design rather than changing the core resource loop. Use it when walls, platforms, supports and decorative components are the limiting factor in a build. Confirm that the set is updated for your game version before opening a save that depends on its pieces.
Micro Manage: reshape individual buildings
Micro Manage allows free movement, rotation, scaling and cloning of any building, according to a dedicated-server guide. These abilities are powerful for correcting alignment or experimenting with layouts, but they can also create placements that normal snapping rules would prevent. Make a backup before large-scale edits and test the result in a disposable save if you are unsure how a change will affect collision or production.
Area Actions: edit a whole region
Area Actions lets you select a region and copy, move or delete everything inside it. It is suited to repeating a production block or clearing a planned area quickly. Because a region operation can affect many machines at once, review the selection boundary carefully and save before applying a destructive delete or move.
Infinite Nudge: align holograms precisely
Infinite Nudge maps a constructor hologram to the grid and lets you slide it with keyboard inputs. It fills the gap between normal snapping and free-form manipulation: use it when a machine is nearly aligned but needs controlled, repeatable offsets. Read its current key bindings in SMM or on the mod page, since key assignments can change between releases.
How to choose a stable mod set
Start with one category
For a first modded save, choose one quality-of-life tool, one visual tool, or one building pack rather than combining an overhaul with several rule-changing mods. This gives you a clear baseline if the game fails to start or a save behaves unexpectedly.

Separate overhaul saves from vanilla-progression saves
Satisfactory Plus changes materials and recipes deeply. Keep it in its own SMM profile or otherwise separate save group from a normal progression world. Cosmetic and placement tools are easier to remove, but a recipe overhaul can leave machines and inventories dependent on content that is no longer present.

Check client and server scope
A mod can affect only the player who installs it, require every client, or require installation on the server as well. No universal classification is published for every mod in the table. Use the individual mod page’s multiplayer label as the authority for that release.
Installing mods on a dedicated server
SMM includes a server workflow rather than requiring you to copy files blindly. A hosting guide describes the following path:
- Open SMM and select Manage Servers in the left sidebar.
- Choose the option to connect over SFTP.
- Enter the server host, port and credentials supplied by your host.
- Install the server-compatible mods through the manager and wait for file transfer to complete.
- Install any required client mods for each player, then restart the server and test a non-critical save.
An official manual-install page also exists for SML and mods, but SMM is the route most current guides recommend. Manual procedures are useful when a host does not support the manager; follow the mod and server documentation exactly in that case rather than mixing manual files with an SMM-managed profile.
Which players need a client installation?
Requirements vary by mod. One server guide explicitly marks Smart! as “requires client install: Yes (all players)”. In practice, every person joining a server should use the same mod list and compatible versions unless the mod page states that it is server-only or client-optional. Mismatched versions can prevent a connection or produce different building behavior.
Do Satisfactory mods work on console?
Console support is unconfirmed. A third-party guide says Coffee Stain Studios has not discussed console mod support, so there is no documented console installation path equivalent to SMM on PC. Do not assume that a PC mod, an SMM profile or a dedicated-server package will work on a console edition. Check an official platform announcement before treating console mod support as available.

Updating mods after a Satisfactory update
Compatibility lag is normal after a major game release. SML and larger mods can remain unavailable for days or weeks while maintainers update them. Use this sequence:
- Note the Satisfactory and SML versions currently installed.
- Open each mod page and confirm that its listed version supports the new game build.
- Update SMM itself if it offers an update.
- Update dependencies and mods in a controlled batch, beginning with SML and the smallest set needed to load your save.
- Launch a copied save first. If it loads and behaves correctly, proceed with your working save.
If a mod page has not caught up, leave that mod disabled rather than forcing an incompatible version. A vanilla or partially modded backup lets you continue playing while waiting for an update.
Troubleshooting common installation problems
SMM cannot find Satisfactory
- Confirm that you launched the game to the title screen before opening SMM.
- Check that SMM is pointed at the correct Steam or Epic installation when multiple libraries exist.
- Close the game and SMM, then reopen SMM so it can rescan the installation.
The mod does not appear in game
- Verify that you clicked the mod’s download arrow and that SMM finished downloading dependencies.
- Check the mod page for an SML requirement or a supported game-version restriction.
- Launch through the SMM-supported method and wait for the first initialization to complete.
The game crashes or a save will not load
- Return to the last backup and disable the most recently added or updated mod.
- Check for a compatibility warning after a Satisfactory or SML update.
- Remove one change at a time so you can identify the conflicting mod instead of deleting the entire profile.
- For a recipe or progression overhaul, use a save created specifically for that overhaul.
Linux AppImage will not run
Set the AppImage’s executable permission in the file manager or use chmod +x on the downloaded file, then start it again. If the file was renamed, substitute its actual name in the command.
Dedicated-server players cannot connect
- Compare the server’s mod list with every player’s client list.
- Pay special attention to mods flagged as requiring installation by all players, such as Smart! in the cited server guide.
- Confirm that the server and clients use compatible SML and mod versions after an update.
A practical 2026 starting setup
For a low-risk first experiment, create a separate save and install one focused tool such as Infinite Nudge, Structural Solutions or Area Actions. Once that save loads reliably, add a second tool and test again. Players seeking a fundamentally different campaign can create a separate Satisfactory Plus save; players who want more power infrastructure can evaluate Refined Power independently. This staged approach makes compatibility failures diagnosable and keeps a vanilla save usable.
For multiplayer, agree on the mod list before the session, record exact versions, and decide who is responsible for server-side installation. For every update, repeat the compatibility check instead of assuming that a mod working on the previous build will load on the next one.
