Start with Rise of the Ronin if you want the closest overall follow-up to Ghost of Yotei. It combines an open-world historical-Japan structure with stealth, swordplay, firearms, player-driven faction choices and a ronin premise. Choose Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice instead for the hardest, most precise sword combat; Assassin’s Creed Shadows for stealth and two contrasting protagonists; or Like a Dragon: Ishin! for a 1860s Kyo story that puts swords and revolvers in the same combat system.

The right pick depends on which part of Ghost of Yotei you want to preserve: roaming a large world, dueling difficult bosses, playing a stealthy shinobi, following a historical protagonist, or simply living out a samurai fantasy. This guide separates those priorities so you can choose without treating every samurai game as interchangeable.

Quick recommendations

  • Best overall follow-up: Rise of the Ronin. It is the clearest match for an open-world historical-Japan adventure with stealth, several weapon types, a grappling rope, firearms and consequential alliances. It launched on PlayStation 5 on March 22, 2024.
  • Best for demanding sword combat: Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Its design concentrates on precise fighting and boss encounters rather than open-world wandering.
  • Best for stealth and character contrast: Assassin’s Creed Shadows. You switch between shinobi Naoe and samurai Yasuke, giving the campaign two distinct approaches.
  • Best for the closest series context: Ghost of Tsushima. It is the earlier game in the same lineage, but it is not required as a narrative prequel to understand Ghost of Yotei.
  • Best for swords and firearms in a historical setting: Like a Dragon: Ishin! Its 1860s Kyo story follows Sakamoto Ryoma and offers Swordsman, Gunman, Wild Dancer and Brawler styles.
  • Best for focused samurai action: Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny Remastered. It emphasizes slashing, blocking and Issen counters in a compact revenge adventure.
  • Best upcoming deep-combat option: Nioh 3. PlayStation’s December 2025 roundup gave it a February 6 launch date; verify the current release status before buying because that date was presented as a planned launch.

How the games differ at a glance

Game World and progression Combat or stealth identity Historical or character hook
Rise of the Ronin Open-world late-Edo Japan with player choices and faction alignment Swords, spears, firearms, thrown weapons, grappling rope and stealth Ronin fantasy; choices can make the protagonist align or clash with story characters and factions
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice More focused than an open-world adventure Demanding, precise sword combat and boss encounters Built around mastery of combat rather than broad wandering
Assassin’s Creed Shadows Stealth-oriented adventure with two playable approaches Switch between a shinobi and a samurai Naoe is the shinobi protagonist; Yasuke is the samurai protagonist
Ghost of Tsushima Open-world samurai adventure in the same broader series lineage Closest design and series context to Ghost of Yotei Earlier game, not a required narrative prequel
Like a Dragon: Ishin! Historical adventure centered on Kyo in the 1860s Sword, revolver and four combat styles Sakamoto Ryoma searches for justice amid widespread inequality
Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny Remastered Focused, combat-forward revenge adventure Slashing, blocking and Issen counters A samurai-centered story, described by PlayStation as falling on the samurai side of the spectrum
Nioh 3 Future-facing option; current availability should be checked Deep samurai gameplay combined with ninja abilities PlayStation’s December 2025 roundup listed a planned February 6 launch

1. Rise of the Ronin: the closest open-world substitute

If your favorite part of Ghost of Yotei is moving through a large Japanese landscape while deciding how to approach encounters, begin here. Rise of the Ronin is explicitly built around late-Edo Japan and a player-created ronin whose relationships with factions can change according to your decisions. PlayStation’s announcement describes choices that shape whether your character aligns or clashes with story characters and their factions, so the role-playing element is not just cosmetic dialogue.

Why it matches the open-world fantasy

The game combines several systems that usually appear in separate samurai experiences. You can fight with swords and spears, use firearms and thrown weapons, move with a grappling rope and approach situations through stealth. That mix makes it the strongest recommendation for a player who wants sword duels without giving up scouting, ranged options or traversal tools.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What to expect from its structure

This is a historical-Japan open-world game rather than a tightly linear boss gauntlet. You will spend time traveling, meeting faction characters and deciding which relationships to support. The broader structure gives your decisions room to matter, but it also means the experience is less concentrated than Sekiro. Choose it when exploration and agency are more important than a single, relentlessly tuned combat challenge.

Co-op and platform note

Rise of the Ronin is the only game in this comparison explicitly identified with online story-mission co-op for up to three players. It released for PlayStation 5 on March 22, 2024. If you want to share the campaign’s missions with friends, this is the clearest fit in the list.

2. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice: choose it for the hardest swordplay

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is the recommendation for players who remember the sword fights more than the scenery. Its appeal is demanding, precise combat and boss encounters. The game is more focused on combat than on open-world wandering, so it answers a different question from Rise of the Ronin: not “Where can I go next?” but “Can I read this attack, respond correctly and win the duel?”

Why the combat feels different

Every encounter asks for attention to timing, spacing and patterns. Progress comes from learning what an opponent is doing and responding with accuracy rather than relying on a broad collection of side activities. That focus makes each major fight a test of execution, which is why it is the best choice for readers specifically asking for the hardest sword combat.

Who should choose it

  • Pick Sekiro if a difficult boss is the main reason you play samurai games.
  • Pick it if a compact, combat-led structure sounds better than clearing a large map.
  • Skip it for now if your priority is stealth experimentation, faction choices or a shared online story campaign.

It is not the closest substitute for the open-world rhythm of Ghost of Yotei, but it is the strongest alternative when mastery of the blade matters most.

3. Assassin’s Creed Shadows: the stealth-first choice

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is the natural pick when you want to alternate between stealth and direct samurai force. Its defining feature is the contrast between two protagonists: Naoe, a shinobi, and Yasuke, a samurai. Switching between them gives the game a built-in answer to a common problem in historical action games: whether to sneak past a threat or confront it openly.

How the two protagonists change your approach

Naoe represents the stealth-oriented route. Yasuke represents the samurai route. The appeal is not merely having two names on the character-select screen; the contrast lets you approach the same broad setting through different priorities. Choose Naoe when infiltration and patience are the point. Choose Yasuke when you want a more direct confrontation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When it is a better choice than Rise of the Ronin

Choose Assassin’s Creed Shadows if the stealth fantasy is more important to you than player-controlled faction alignment or a ronin role. Choose Rise of the Ronin if you specifically want late-Edo history, firearms and a grappling rope alongside stealth. These games overlap in setting and mood, but their central fantasies are different: one is built around two contrasting specialists, the other around a customizable ronin and consequential alliances.

4. Ghost of Tsushima: the closest design and series context

If you have not played Ghost of Tsushima, it is the most obvious next stop because it belongs to the same broader lineage as Ghost of Yotei. It offers the closest design context, making it useful for understanding how the series approaches exploration, swordplay and the tension between samurai honor and stealth.

Do you need to play it first?

No. Treat it as an earlier companion rather than a required narrative prequel. You can play Ghost of Yotei without first completing it, but going back to Ghost of Tsushima gives you a direct point of comparison for the series’ world design and tone.

Who should pick it

Choose it when what you want most is familiarity: a similar overall structure, a comparable samurai-focused identity and the chance to see the earlier game’s design decisions for yourself. If you have already played it and want something substantially different, move to Sekiro for combat intensity or Like a Dragon: Ishin! for its sword-and-firearm role-playing system.

5. Like a Dragon: Ishin!: historical Kyo with swords and revolvers

Like a Dragon: Ishin! takes a different route from the open-world samurai template. PlayStation places the story in 1860s Kyo, a city plagued by widespread inequality, where one samurai changes the course of history while searching for justice. The protagonist is Sakamoto Ryoma, and the game supports four combat styles: Swordsman, Gunman, Wild Dancer and Brawler.

Why the weapon mix matters

This is the strongest answer to the question, “Is there a historical Japanese game with stealth and firearms?” among the recommendations here, although its clearest documented identity is the combination of sword and firearm combat rather than a stealth-first structure. PlayStation’s product description summarizes the premise directly: you draw your blade, load your revolver and join the revolution. The four styles let you decide whether to stay with the sword, use the gun, combine both or fight unarmed.

Setting and release details

The story’s 1860s Kyo setting gives it a late-period historical frame distinct from the ronin-focused late-Edo structure of Rise of the Ronin. The PlayStation product page lists a February 21, 2023 release and editions for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

Who should choose it

  • Choose it for a named historical protagonist and a revolution-era story.
  • Choose it if switching between sword and revolver sounds more appealing than pure blade combat.
  • Choose it when a focused historical adventure is preferable to a large open-world map.

6. Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny Remastered: compact, combat-forward action

Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny Remastered is for readers who want a direct samurai revenge experience rather than a large role-playing sandbox. PlayStation describes it as falling on the samurai side of the spectrum, and its combat identity is clear: slashing, blocking and Issen counters.

What makes its combat distinct

The Issen counter is the centerpiece for players who enjoy risk-and-reward timing. You are not simply attacking until an enemy falls; you are watching for an opening, defending and attempting a precisely timed counter. That makes the game a good bridge between straightforward action and the discipline of a demanding sword duel.

Who should choose it

Pick this remaster if you want a focused campaign, a revenge-driven premise and combat that stays at the center of the experience. It is less suitable if your main requirement is a broad open world, extensive faction decisions or online story co-op. PlayStation lists versions for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

7. Nioh 3: a future option for samurai and ninja systems

Nioh 3 is the forward-looking choice in this list for players who want deep samurai gameplay with ninja abilities. PlayStation’s December 2025 roundup gave it a planned February 6 launch date. Because that date was presented in a future-facing roundup, check the current platform listing and release status before purchasing.

Why it belongs on your shortlist

The appeal is the combination of two combat identities: samurai depth and ninja techniques. That makes it a useful recommendation for players who find a single weapon style too narrow and want a system with more room for experimentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should wait for it

Keep Nioh 3 on your list if you are comfortable choosing a newer release based on its announced direction rather than an established personal experience. If you want a game you can start immediately with the release information documented here, choose one of the already available recommendations instead.

Choose by the experience you want

If you want an open world

Start with Rise of the Ronin for a late-Edo setting, faction choices and a ronin protagonist. Choose Ghost of Tsushima if you want the closest series context to Ghost of Yotei. The other recommendations are better treated as focused or combat-led alternatives.

If you want the hardest sword combat

Choose Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Its identity is precise combat and boss encounters, not map completion. If you want a more compact samurai action game built around blocking and timed counters, choose Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny Remastered.

If stealth is your priority

Choose Assassin’s Creed Shadows for the explicit shinobi-versus-samurai contrast between Naoe and Yasuke. Choose Rise of the Ronin if you also want firearms, thrown weapons, a grappling rope and decisions that affect faction relationships.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you want historical characters and political change

Like a Dragon: Ishin! centers on Sakamoto Ryoma in 1860s Kyo and frames its action around inequality, justice and revolution. Rise of the Ronin is the better alternative if you want your own ronin identity and choices that shape alliances.

If you want swords and firearms together

Like a Dragon: Ishin! is the clearest match, with Swordsman, Gunman, Wild Dancer and Brawler styles. Rise of the Ronin also combines swords, spears, firearms and thrown weapons, but its broader appeal is the open-world structure and faction-driven role-playing.

If you want to play with others

Rise of the Ronin is the only recommendation here explicitly identified with online story-mission co-op, supporting up to three players. Do not assume that feature from a game’s genre or marketing tone; verify the current service details for any other title before buying it for multiplayer.

A practical decision path

  1. Decide whether you need an open world. If yes, choose between Rise of the Ronin and Ghost of Tsushima. If no, continue to the next step.
  2. Rate combat difficulty. For the most demanding swordplay, choose Sekiro. For timed counters in a focused revenge game, choose Onimusha 2.
  3. Choose your preferred protagonist fantasy. Pick Naoe or Yasuke in Assassin’s Creed Shadows for a shinobi/samurai switch; pick a ronin whose alliances change in Rise of the Ronin; follow Sakamoto Ryoma in Like a Dragon: Ishin!.
  4. Decide whether firearms are essential. Choose Like a Dragon: Ishin! for its explicit revolver-and-sword combat styles, or Rise of the Ronin for firearms integrated into a broader open-world toolkit.
  5. Check release availability. Rise of the Ronin, Like a Dragon: Ishin! and Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny Remastered have the platform and release details listed above. Recheck the current status of Nioh 3 because its February 6 date was announced as planned in a December 2025 roundup.

Final picks by player type

  • The explorer: Rise of the Ronin.
  • The duelist: Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
  • The stealth player: Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
  • The series loyalist: Ghost of Tsushima.
  • The history-and-firearms fan: Like a Dragon: Ishin!.
  • The focused action player: Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny Remastered.
  • The systems enthusiast planning ahead: Nioh 3, after confirming its current release status.
