The best Odyssey G5 setup starts with the exact model number, not the G5 name alone. Samsung has sold several G5 generations and sizes, so a setting that is correct for a 27-inch C27G55T can be wrong for a newer 165Hz or 180Hz model.

For the documented 27-inch C27G55T, use 2560×1440 at its highest available 144Hz mode, enable FreeSync Premium in the monitor and variable refresh in your graphics driver, use the default or sRGB mode for SDR, and switch HDR on only for HDR games and video. Treat RGB values as calibration starting points rather than universal Samsung recommendations.

Identify your exact Odyssey G5 model first

Look at the label on the rear of the monitor or open the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD) information page. Record the complete model suffix, screen size, region code and current firmware. Samsung maintains separate support pages and manuals for closely related models such as LC27G55TQBNXZA and LC27G55TQBWXXL; their ports, menus and supported refresh rates can differ.

The name “Odyssey G5” covers multiple generations. Do not assume that every G5 supports 144Hz, 165Hz or 180Hz. Use the refresh-rate maximum printed in the manual or product page for your exact suffix. The settings below use the documented 27-inch C27G55T family as the reference point.

Documented C27G55T specifications

Feature Documented value How to use it
Native class 2560×1440 (WQHD) Select this as the operating system and game resolution for the sharpest image.
Maximum refresh rate 144Hz Choose 144Hz only when the model and connection expose it as an available mode.
Variable refresh AMD FreeSync Premium Enable the monitor feature and the matching GPU-driver option.
HDR HDR10 support Use for HDR-encoded games and video; it is not the best permanent desktop mode.
Response-time claim 1ms (Samsung specification) A marketing specification, not a guarantee of identical motion performance in every mode.
Curvature 1000R A physical panel characteristic; it does not require a special Windows setting.

Samsung’s 2020 product description lists the C27G55T combination as “a 1000R curved screen, WQHD, HDR10, 1ms Response Time, 144Hz Refresh Rate, AMD FreeSync Premium, and futuristic design.” The 144Hz and 1ms figures above are Samsung’s specifications, not independent measurements.

A sensible baseline for each type of content

Use case Monitor mode Refresh and sync HDR Picture starting point
Windows or macOS desktop, SDR applications Default or sRGB, if available Highest stable mode supported by the exact model Off Set brightness for the room; leave contrast near its default.
SDR games Default, sRGB or a game preset that does not clip shadows Highest stable mode with FreeSync/Adaptive-Sync enabled Off unless the game is genuinely HDR Adjust brightness in the game after the monitor is stable.
HDR games and HDR video HDR mode when the signal is HDR Highest stable mode with variable refresh enabled where supported On in the operating system and application Use the game’s HDR calibration; do not reuse an SDR RGB recipe.

There is no Samsung-published universal RGB preset for all Odyssey G5 panels. Panel variation, room lighting, firmware and the difference between SDR and HDR make a single set of red, green and blue values unreliable.

Set up the monitor in the right order

  1. Confirm the suffix. Photograph the rear label or copy the model text from the OSD. Download the manual and current firmware for that exact model from Samsung Support.
  2. Connect the monitor directly to the graphics output. Avoid a dock, splitter or adapter while establishing the maximum mode. Use an input and cable combination listed in the model’s manual; Samsung’s G5 range does not have one universal port-bandwidth rule.
  3. Select native resolution and refresh rate. In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, choose the G5, then select 2560×1440 and the highest refresh rate shown for your model. On another operating system, use its display control panel and choose the same native resolution and maximum validated mode.
  4. Enable synchronization in the OSD. Open the monitor menu and turn on FreeSync, Adaptive-Sync or the equivalent variable-refresh setting. The wording changes by generation.
  5. Enable the matching GPU option. In AMD Software, open the Display section and enable FreeSync for the G5. In NVIDIA Control Panel, open Set up G-SYNC and enable the compatible variable-refresh option if the monitor and driver expose it. Intel Arc and integrated graphics use the variable-refresh control in Intel Graphics Software when supported. Apply the setting to the G5 rather than globally if you use other displays.
  6. Establish an SDR picture. Select the default or sRGB picture mode, set brightness for the room and leave contrast close to its factory value. Change one control at a time so you can identify which adjustment helped.
  7. Test a game before changing advanced controls. Confirm that the game reports 2560×1440, the intended refresh rate and the correct SDR or HDR mode. Only then experiment with black level, gamma or response-time controls.

How to get 144Hz, 165Hz or 180Hz

For the documented 144Hz C27G55T

The C27G55T is documented at a maximum of 144Hz. After selecting 2560×1440 in the operating system, choose 144Hz in Advanced display or the equivalent display panel. Open the monitor OSD’s information screen and verify that it reports the same input timing. If 144Hz is missing, the usual causes are an unsupported input path, an adapter or dock, an incorrect graphics output, an outdated driver, or a model that is not the C27G55T variant.

For a newer high-refresh G5

Some later G5 models advertise higher limits, but the number is model-specific. Do not force 165Hz or 180Hz on a 144Hz model. If a higher value is listed for your exact suffix, select it in the operating system and verify that the OSD accepts the timing without flicker, black screens or frame skipping.

When the desired rate is unavailable

  • Remove adapters, KVM switches and docks temporarily and connect the computer directly.
  • Try another input on the monitor only if the manual identifies it as supporting the desired resolution and rate.
  • Install the current graphics driver and reboot after installation.
  • In the GPU control panel, remove a custom resolution and return to the standard 2560×1440 mode.
  • Check the OSD information page. If it reports a lower rate than Windows, the limitation is in the signal path or monitor mode rather than the game.
  • Use a lower refresh rate only as a stability test. A stable 120Hz or 144Hz result is preferable to an intermittent higher setting.

Configure FreeSync or Adaptive-Sync

FreeSync matches the display’s refresh timing to the GPU’s frame delivery, reducing tearing when frame rate changes. On the documented C27G55T, Samsung identifies AMD FreeSync Premium as a core feature.

Recommended sequence

  1. Turn on FreeSync or Adaptive-Sync in the monitor OSD.
  2. Enable the corresponding variable-refresh option in the GPU driver.
  3. Apply the change, close and relaunch the game, and check that the driver identifies the monitor as variable-refresh capable.
  4. Use the highest stable refresh mode. If the game regularly runs below the monitor’s practical operating range, reduce demanding settings or use the game’s frame-rate cap rather than disabling synchronization immediately.

FreeSync can change which OSD controls are available. Black level, gamma and response-time options may become greyed out, or their behavior may change while variable refresh is active. This is normal for some generations; the exact manual is authoritative for your suffix.

Signs that synchronization is not working

  • Tearing remains visible even when the frame rate is fluctuating.
  • The driver does not list the G5 as variable-refresh capable.
  • The screen repeatedly blanks when a game changes frame rate or switches between SDR and HDR.
  • Overdrive artifacts appear only after enabling synchronization.

Recheck that the OSD switch and driver switch are both on, that the game is running on the G5 rather than another display, and that no second display or adapter is interfering with the signal. If artifacts persist, use the monitor’s safer response-time setting and consult the model manual.

Use HDR10 only for HDR content

The documented G5 supports HDR10. HDR is a signal format and operating mode, not a permanent “better color” switch. Leave HDR off for ordinary desktop work and SDR games unless you specifically prefer the appearance; enable it when watching HDR video or playing a game that outputs HDR.

HDR workflow in Windows

  1. Open Settings > System > Display and select the G5.
  2. Open the HDR section and turn on the display’s HDR switch only when you are about to use HDR content.
  3. Launch the HDR game or video app and select its HDR option if it has one.
  4. Run the application’s own HDR calibration. Adjust paper-white or logo visibility until the test pattern is barely visible where the instructions indicate.
  5. Exit the HDR application or turn HDR off again for normal SDR work.

Samsung does not publish one universal HDR slider recipe for every G5. Brightness, tone mapping and color controls can differ by panel and firmware, so an SDR RGB setting should not be copied into HDR mode.

Common HDR problems

  • Washed-out desktop: HDR is enabled for SDR content, or the GPU is sending the wrong range. Turn HDR off for the desktop and verify the output range.
  • HDR option is missing: Confirm that the exact model supports HDR10, that the selected input is the one used by the computer, and that the operating system sees an HDR-capable display.
  • Colors change after a game closes: The game may have left HDR enabled. Toggle HDR off and back on, then relaunch the game.
  • Clipped highlights or crushed shadows: Use the game’s HDR calibration and the monitor’s documented black-level or gamma options rather than increasing RGB gains at random.

Set color without chasing a universal RGB preset

Color depends on the individual panel, room illumination, viewing distance and source mode. Samsung has not published a one-size-fits-all RGB recipe or colorimeter result for the Odyssey G5 family. Start from a neutral mode and make small, reversible changes.

Recommended SDR adjustment order

  1. Let the monitor warm up for about 20 minutes before judging color.
  2. Choose the default or sRGB picture mode.
  3. Set brightness so a white document is comfortable in the actual room. A setting that looks right at night may be too dim in daylight.
  4. Leave contrast near its default and disable dynamic contrast or vivid enhancements while calibrating.
  5. Use a trusted grayscale and skin-tone test image. Adjust gamma only if midtones are obviously too dark or too light.
  6. Change RGB gains only after the neutral mode and brightness are set. Keep notes so you can return to the previous values.

A model-specific starting experiment

A 2022 owner video for model C27G55TQWE reports brightness 75, contrast 70, sharpness 60 and RGB 50/44/52. Those values are an experiment for that particular unit, not a Samsung recommendation and not a calibration result. Do not apply them automatically to another size, suffix, region or HDR mode.

Fix washed-out colors in a controlled order

Washed-out color is usually a range, mode or signal-path problem before it is an RGB-gain problem. Make one change, test a known image, and stop when the blacks and whites look correct.

  1. Check HDR state. Turn HDR off in the operating system for SDR desktop work. Make sure the game or video player is not applying a second HDR conversion.
  2. Check GPU output range. In the graphics driver, select RGB output and Full range when that option is available and appropriate for the monitor. A mismatch between limited and full range can make blacks look gray or crush detail.
  3. Check the monitor input mode. Some G5 models expose black-level or HDMI range choices that must match the GPU. Use the exact model manual if the control is present.
  4. Remove duplicate processing. Disable dynamic contrast, vivid color, game filters and driver-level color enhancements while testing.
  5. Check the cable and input. Reconnect the cable, try the documented input, and remove adapters or splitters. A marginal signal can cause mode changes that look like a color fault.
  6. Reset only the picture profile. If previous changes are unknown, reset the monitor’s picture settings, then repeat the SDR workflow. Avoid a full factory reset unless you know what other OSD settings will be lost.
  7. Adjust RGB gains last. Use a neutral test image and small steps. RGB values that fix one panel can introduce a tint on another.

Understand black level, gamma and response-time controls

Black level

Black-level controls set how the monitor interprets dark parts of the signal. If the GPU sends Full range while the monitor expects Limited, blacks can look gray; the opposite mismatch can hide shadow detail. Make the GPU and monitor agree before changing the slider.

Gamma

Gamma changes midtone brightness rather than the panel’s maximum white. A higher or lower preset can make a game look brighter without restoring clipped shadow detail. Use a test pattern and keep the setting that preserves both dark steps and highlight detail.

Response time and overdrive

Overdrive can reduce visible trailing but may create bright inverse trails. Start with the default or middle setting, especially when FreeSync is enabled, and compare motion in a moving game scene. The fastest setting is not automatically the cleanest.

Practical profile examples

Profile Resolution and refresh Sync HDR Color approach
Work and browsing 2560×1440 at the highest stable mode FreeSync/Adaptive-Sync may remain enabled Off Default or sRGB; brightness matched to the room.
Competitive SDR game Highest stable mode exposed by the exact G5 Enabled in OSD and driver Off Neutral preset; avoid vivid processing that hides detail.
Single-player HDR game Highest stable mode that remains reliable in HDR Enabled where supported On in Windows and the game Use the game’s HDR calibration, not SDR RGB gains.
HDR video Native resolution and stable refresh Optional On only during HDR playback Leave the HDR profile at its validated defaults unless a test pattern shows a problem.

Model-specific limits you should not ignore

  • The G5 label does not identify one panel or one maximum refresh rate.
  • The 144Hz figure applies to the documented C27G55T variant; it does not prove that every G5 is 144Hz.
  • Do not promise 165Hz or 180Hz without confirmation from the exact model page or manual.
  • Port bandwidth, available inputs and menu names vary by suffix. Use the model-specific Samsung Support manual rather than a universal cable claim.
  • Firmware can change menu behavior. Record the original settings before updating or resetting.

Final verification checklist

  • Model suffix and region recorded.
  • Native 2560×1440 selected where supported.
  • Highest stable refresh rate selected and confirmed in the OSD.
  • FreeSync/Adaptive-Sync enabled in both monitor and driver when desired.
  • SDR desktop uses default or sRGB mode with room-appropriate brightness.
  • HDR is enabled only for HDR games or video and calibrated inside the application.
  • GPU output is RGB/full range where supported and matched to the monitor’s black-level setting.
  • RGB gains were changed only after mode, range and cable checks.
