Short answer: The Galaxy S25 Ultra is the best all-around choice if you want Samsung’s newest documented dual-telephoto system: a 50MP camera with 5x optical zoom plus a 10MP camera with 3x optical zoom. Choose the Galaxy S24 Ultra when it is meaningfully cheaper, because its documented telephoto hardware is closely related. Choose the Galaxy S23 Ultra if a native 10x optical camera matters more than buying the newest generation. The regular Galaxy S24 and S24+ are less expensive or simpler alternatives with one dedicated 3x telephoto camera each.
Optical zoom and Space Zoom are not interchangeable. Optical zoom uses a dedicated lens and sensor to magnify the subject before capture; higher Space Zoom settings add digital cropping and computational processing. That distinction is central when comparing these phones.
Which Samsung Galaxy phones have a dedicated telephoto camera?
Samsung’s current Ultra models and the standard Galaxy S24-series models listed below all have at least one separate telephoto camera. The main differences are how many telephoto cameras each phone has and how far its optics reach without relying on digital magnification.

Galaxy S25 Ultra: best overall dedicated-telephoto setup
What the cameras provide
The Galaxy S25 Ultra has two dedicated telephoto cameras. Its 50MP telephoto provides 5x optical zoom, while a separate 10MP telephoto provides 3x optical zoom. Having both focal lengths is more flexible than having only one telephoto: 3x is suited to portraits, people across a room, food and moderate detail; 5x gives a tighter view for distant subjects without immediately resorting to digital enlargement.
The 50MP sensor behind the 5x lens also gives the phone a high-resolution capture path at that focal length. Samsung identifies the camera as a 50MP telephoto with 5x optical zoom in its 2025 Mobile Press specifications. The 3x camera remains useful because a 5x lens can be too narrow for nearby subjects, while the main camera’s wide view can require heavy cropping.
Why it is the default recommendation
- It combines two dedicated telephoto focal lengths instead of forcing every zoom shot through one lens.
- Its 5x camera offers a longer native reach than a 3x-only phone.
- It is the newest model in this comparison, so a buyer starting a long ownership period is choosing the latest generation represented here.
- It avoids treating a high digital zoom number as a substitute for a real telephoto lens.
What it does not offer
The S25 Ultra does not have the S23 Ultra’s dedicated 10x optical telephoto. Its longest documented optical camera is 5x. A 10x selection on the S25 Ultra therefore combines the available camera feed with cropping and computational processing rather than coming from a native 10x lens. That can still produce useful images, but it is not the same optical arrangement as the S23 Ultra.

Closely related telephoto hardware
Samsung’s S24 Ultra announcement lists a 50MP 5x optical telephoto and a 10MP 3x optical telephoto, the same two dedicated focal lengths documented for the S25 Ultra. For the specific question of whether a phone has a real 3x and 5x telephoto, the S24 Ultra therefore remains highly competitive.
Samsung describes the S24 Ultra’s system this way:
“Galaxy S24 Ultra’s Quad Tele System, with new 5x optical zoom lens, works with the 50MP sensor to enable optical-quality performance at zoom levels from 2x, 3x, 5x to 10x magnification thanks to Adaptive Pixel Sensor.”

The statement describes optical-quality results at several magnifications, not a claim that every listed level is produced by a separate native optical lens. The phone still has dedicated 3x and 5x telephotos; magnification between or beyond those points can use sensor cropping and computational processing.
When the S24 Ultra is the smarter purchase
Buy the S24 Ultra when its current street price is clearly below the S25 Ultra and you value the same basic dual-telephoto arrangement more than owning the newest generation. A lower price can change the value calculation because the core 3x-and-5x camera coverage remains strong.
Do not assume that every S24 Ultra listing has the same condition or warranty. New, refurbished and used units can differ in battery health, included accessories and return rights. Compare those terms alongside the handset price rather than comparing sticker prices alone.
Galaxy S23 Ultra: the choice for native 10x optical zoom
Its distinctive advantage
The Galaxy S23 Ultra is the specialist option in this group. Samsung’s specification sheet lists separate 3x and 10x optical zoom capability, including a dedicated 10x telephoto camera. That gives it the longest native optical reach of the phones covered here.
A native 10x lens is valuable when the subject is genuinely distant: wildlife, performers on a stage, architectural details across a street or sports action from the stands. At the same framing, a 10x lens needs less digital enlargement than a phone whose longest dedicated lens is 5x.

The trade-offs of choosing an older Ultra
The S23 Ultra is an older generation than the S24 Ultra and S25 Ultra. Availability can be more variable because retailers may carry it mainly as refurbished or used stock rather than as a consistently stocked new model. Condition, battery wear and seller support deserve particular attention.

Software-support runway also tends to favor newer generations, although the exact remaining support period depends on Samsung’s current policy and the device’s regional release. Check Samsung’s support information for your country before buying an S23 Ultra specifically for long-term use. The 10x optical camera is a real hardware advantage, but it should be weighed against age and availability.
Galaxy S24 and S24+: best standard-series options with a real telephoto
What both phones include
Samsung’s S24 camera guide lists a 10MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom for both the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+. Each therefore has a genuine dedicated telephoto rather than relying only on a main-camera crop.
Both models also advertise 30x Space Zoom. That figure describes the maximum branded magnification range, not a 30x optical lens. The only dedicated telephoto reach documented for these two phones is 3x optical zoom.

Why they are less flexible than the Ultra models
With one telephoto camera, the S24 and S24+ cannot switch between two native telephoto focal lengths. A subject framed between the phone’s natural camera positions may be covered by digital cropping or by changing lenses, depending on the selected magnification and lighting. The Ultra systems provide an additional dedicated telephoto option, which gives them more flexibility for distant detail and tighter compositions.
Choose the regular S24-series model when you prefer the standard line’s design, size class or purchase price and 3x optical reach meets your needs. Choose an Ultra when your priority is a second telephoto focal length or the longest native optical reach.
Optical zoom, sensor crops and Space Zoom explained
Native optical zoom
Native optical zoom comes from a dedicated lens and sensor combination. A 3x telephoto is designed to show a subject roughly three times closer than the phone’s reference wide camera framing without first enlarging pixels digitally. A 5x or 10x telephoto extends that optical reach farther.

Optical reach is not a complete guarantee of image quality. Light level, focus, motion, lens quality, sensor size and image processing all affect the final photograph. However, the presence of a dedicated lens answers the hardware question: the phone has a real telephoto camera at that focal length.
Digital and computational magnification
Digital zoom enlarges or crops image data after capture or during preview. Computational photography can combine multiple frames, apply sharpening and use a high-resolution sensor crop to make the result look more detailed. These techniques can be useful, especially in good light, but they do not create the same information as a longer optical lens.
For that reason, do not compare “30x Space Zoom” directly with “10x optical zoom.” The first is a maximum processed magnification claim; the second identifies a dedicated lens’s native optical reach.

Choose the S25 Ultra if you want the broadest current setup
Select the S25 Ultra when you want two dedicated telephoto cameras, including a high-resolution 5x unit, and prefer the newest generation in this list. It is the safest default for a buyer who takes portraits, travel details and distant subjects and does not require a native 10x lens.
Choose the S24 Ultra if the discount is substantial
Select the S24 Ultra when current pricing makes it materially cheaper than the S25 Ultra while its condition and warranty are acceptable. Its documented 3x and 5x telephotos cover the same key native focal lengths needed by most users.
Choose the S23 Ultra for true 10x optical reach
Select the S23 Ultra when your photography routinely starts at 10x and you specifically want a dedicated 10x camera. Accept the older generation and inspect battery condition, seller reputation and support coverage carefully.

Buying considerations beyond the lens specifications
Generation and support horizon
Newer phones generally leave more time before a buyer reaches the end of the manufacturer’s update window, but support length is policy- and region-dependent. Verify the current Samsung support commitment for the exact model and market. This matters more if you plan to keep the phone for several years than if you expect to replace it soon.
Size and weight
Samsung’s published camera specifications do not establish exact dimensions or weights for these models, and those figures can vary by market and configuration. Check Samsung’s specification page for your region if pocketability, one-handed use or a particular case size is important. Do not infer handling comfort from the telephoto specification alone.

Current prices and inventory change by country, storage configuration, retailer and condition. No single current price can be stated reliably here. Before ordering, compare new, manufacturer-refurbished, retailer-refurbished and used listings separately, and confirm the exact model number, storage capacity, warranty, return period and network compatibility.
Used and refurbished inspection checklist
- Confirm that the listing names the exact Galaxy model rather than using a generic “Ultra” description.
- Check battery-health disclosure or the seller’s replacement guarantee.
- Test every camera, especially the 3x, 5x or 10x telephoto, because a damaged lens or autofocus mechanism can be expensive to repair.
- Inspect the lens cover for scratches, cracks, haze or condensation.
- Verify that the phone is not carrier-locked or reported lost, and that the return policy allows camera testing.
- Check the software-update status after setup and install available security updates.
Strengths and limitations at a glance
| Phone | Main telephoto strength | Main limitation | Practical buying note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy S25 Ultra | Two dedicated telephotos, including 5x optical at 50MP | No dedicated 10x optical camera | Best default choice when newest generation matters |
| Galaxy S24 Ultra | Two dedicated telephotos at 3x and 5x | Older than S25 Ultra | Value improves as its street price falls |
| Galaxy S23 Ultra | Dedicated 10x optical telephoto plus 3x | Older hardware and potentially less predictable stock | Inspect used or refurbished condition carefully |
| Galaxy S24 | Dedicated 3x optical telephoto in a standard-series phone | Only one telephoto focal length | Suitable when 3x is sufficient |
| Galaxy S24+ | Dedicated 3x optical telephoto without moving to an Ultra | Only one telephoto focal length | Compare its current price and preferred size with the S24 |
Bottom line for different buyers
For the broadest combination of current hardware and native telephoto flexibility, buy the Galaxy S25 Ultra. If the S24 Ultra is substantially cheaper, it is the sensible value alternative because its documented 3x-and-5x telephoto layout is closely related. If your deciding factor is specifically a native 10x optical lens, buy the Galaxy S23 Ultra and accept the older-generation buying risks. If you want a standard Galaxy phone with a real telephoto but do not need two telephoto focal lengths, the Galaxy S24 or S24+ supplies a dedicated 3x camera.
