The Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra is the best Galaxy choice for zoom photography in 2026. Samsung lists dedicated 3x and 5x telephoto cameras, 2x and 10x optical-quality modes, and digital zoom up to 100x. The Galaxy S25 Ultra offers the same headline zoom positions and is the sensible value alternative when its price is lower. The Galaxy S24 Ultra is still worth considering at a substantial discount because Samsung lists four telephoto positions—2x, 3x, 5x and 10x—but it is an older generation.
Those labels describe different technologies. A dedicated telephoto lens gives genuine optical magnification; “optical-quality” modes combine sensor cropping with computational processing; and 100x Space Zoom is a heavily processed digital mode. Use the table and decision guide below to match the phone to the distances and lighting you actually photograph.
Quick comparison: Samsung Galaxy zoom cameras
| Phone | Dedicated or listed zoom positions | Optical-quality modes | Maximum advertised zoom | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy S26 Ultra | 3x and 5x optical telephoto cameras | 2x and 10x optical-quality zoom | Up to 100x digital zoom | Best overall Galaxy option for new buyers |
| Galaxy S25 Ultra | 3x and 5x optical zoom | 2x and 10x optical-quality zoom | 100x Space Zoom | Value alternative with the same headline positions |
| Galaxy S24 Ultra | Samsung lists 2x, 3x, 5x and 10x quad-telephoto positions | Not separately stated on the cited 2024 specification sheet | 100x Space Zoom | Discounted older model for buyers who want several reach options |
The figures above come from Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra product page (2026), the 2025 Galaxy S25 series specification sheet and the 2024 Galaxy S24 series specification sheet. Prices, storage configurations and availability vary by country and date, so verify those details for your market before ordering.
What “zoom” means on a Galaxy phone
Native optical zoom
Optical zoom comes from a separate camera and lens designed for a particular magnification. On the S26 Ultra and S25 Ultra, the dedicated 3x and 5x telephoto cameras are the native optical positions. Selecting one of those cameras changes the lens being used rather than merely enlarging the view from the main sensor.
#1 Best Overall
- Stunning 6.9″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with adaptive 1–120 Hz refresh rate, ultra‑bright up to ~2600 nits, HDR support, “Vision Booster,” and adaptive color tone — giving vivid colours, great outdoor visibility, and super‑smooth scrolling.
- Powerful internals: it runs on the new Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy (3 nm) chip, with 12 GB (or in some markets up to 16 GB) RAM and up to 1 TB UFS 4.0 storage — offering significantly improved CPU/GPU/NPU performance, especially for AI tasks, gaming, and heavy multitasking.
- Advanced quad‑camera system: 200 MP wide main sensor, plus a 50 MP ultrawide, a 50 MP periscope telephoto (5× optical zoom), and a 10 MP telephoto (3× optical zoom) — giving flexibility from ultra‑wide through detailed telephoto shots, and strong performance in varied lighting.
- 5,000 mAh battery with 45 W fast wired charging, wireless charging (Qi2) and reverse wireless charging — balancing long battery life with flexible charging options.
- Durable, premium build: Titanium‑frame body, protected by Corning Gorilla Armor 2 glass, with IP68 dust/water resistance, ultrasonic in‑display fingerprint sensor, modern connectivity (5G, Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth, UWB, USB‑C), and long‑term software support (Android 15 / One UI 7, promised 7 major OS/security updates).
Native optical reach is most useful when your subject is far enough away that the main camera would need a large crop: people on a stage, animals that cannot be approached, architectural details and sports played across a field. It also gives you predictable framing. A 5x position shows a substantially narrower view than 3x, so you can choose the lens that places the subject at a workable size without immediately resorting to heavy digital enlargement.
Optical-quality zoom
Samsung labels 2x and 10x settings on the S26 Ultra and S25 Ultra as “optical-quality.” That wording is not the same as a dedicated 2x or 10x optical lens. These modes use a sensor crop, image processing or a combination of both to produce an image intended to look closer to an optical result than a simple digital enlargement.
At 2x, an optical-quality mode can be convenient for portraits and details when 3x would frame too tightly. At 10x, it provides a long-reach option without claiming that the phone contains a separate 10x optical camera. Treat these modes as computationally assisted focal lengths: useful, but dependent on light, focus accuracy, subject movement and processing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDigital and Space Zoom
100x is the maximum digital or Space Zoom setting listed for all three phones. It is not a promise of 100x native optical magnification. The phone enlarges a small portion of the sensor data and applies computational processing, so fine detail, texture and edges can vary significantly with lighting, atmospheric haze, hand movement and the subject’s distance.
Use 100x when the priority is identifying or framing something extremely distant, such as reading a far sign or locating a subject across a landscape. For photographs intended to withstand close inspection, start with the 3x, 5x or 10x options that give you a tighter optical or optical-quality starting point, then move higher only when the composition requires it.
Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra: the best current choice
What the official specifications establish
Samsung’s 2026 Galaxy S26 Ultra page lists a dedicated 3x telephoto camera and a dedicated 5x telephoto camera. It also lists 2x and 10x optical-quality zoom modes and digital zoom up to 100x. Those are the most complete zoom provisions in the current Galaxy range covered here, making the S26 Ultra the straightforward recommendation for a buyer who wants the newest Samsung zoom hardware.
Rank #2
- Stunning 6.9″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with adaptive 1–120 Hz refresh rate, ultra‑bright up to ~2600 nits, HDR support, “Vision Booster,” and adaptive color tone — giving vivid colours, great outdoor visibility, and super‑smooth scrolling.

The two native telephoto positions cover the most common framing gaps. Use 3x for tighter portraits, nearby wildlife and medium-distance details; switch to 5x when the subject is farther away or you want a more compressed-looking composition without moving closer. The 2x and 10x optical-quality steps fill in practical intermediate and long-reach compositions.

- Photographers buying new and wanting the current model rather than an older discounted phone.
- Travelers who need both a moderate telephoto and a longer 5x viewpoint in one device.
- People who regularly photograph distant subjects but do not want to carry a separate camera with a long lens.
- Users who want access to 100x for occasional extreme-distance framing while understanding that it is digital.
What is not established by the specification page
The cited Samsung page does not provide an independent sharpness ranking against the S25 Ultra or S24 Ultra. It also does not, in the material available for this comparison, establish aperture values, a quantified low-light advantage, stabilization specifications, autofocus measurements or a keeper-rate test. Those factors can materially affect real photographs, so do not treat the zoom labels alone as proof that every S26 Ultra image will outperform an older model in every situation.
Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra: the value alternative
Zoom hardware
Samsung’s 2025 Galaxy S25 series specification sheet lists 3x and 5x optical zoom, 2x and 10x optical-quality zoom and 100x Space Zoom. On the headline zoom positions, that is the same arrangement Samsung lists for the S26 Ultra. The S25 Ultra therefore remains a strong choice when its street price is meaningfully below the newer phone.
The 3x and 5x positions give you genuine optical telephoto choices for medium and longer distances. The 2x setting can keep a portrait or product shot from looking as tightly framed as 3x, while 10x gives additional reach when 5x is not enough. Space Zoom extends the framing range to 100x, but the same digital-zoom limitations apply: the result depends on light, stability, atmospheric conditions and the processing decision made by the phone.
When it makes more sense than the S26 Ultra
Choose the S25 Ultra when you can obtain it with the storage, warranty and regional configuration you need at a clear discount. Because the official sheets list the same 3x, 5x, 2x optical-quality and 10x optical-quality positions, the decision is primarily about price, age, support horizon and any broader system differences that matter to you—not about gaining a different headline telephoto range.
Do not assume that identical zoom labels guarantee identical image quality. Samsung’s specification sheet identifies the available positions, not a controlled comparison of detail, noise, autofocus or stabilization. If those characteristics are decisive, look for current independent testing of the exact regional models before purchase.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra: the discounted older option
Four listed telephoto positions
Samsung’s 2024 Galaxy S24 series specification sheet lists “2x | 3x | 5x | 10x Quad Telephoto” and 100x Space Zoom. This gives the S24 Ultra a broad set of selectable reach points and explains why it remains relevant for discounted buyers.
The wording on that sheet is different from the S26 Ultra and S25 Ultra descriptions. It identifies four quad-telephoto positions but does not, in the cited material, separately classify each position as a native optical camera or as optical-quality processing. Describe the S24 Ultra using Samsung’s exact “quad telephoto” terminology rather than assuming that every listed step is a separate optical lens.
Who should consider it
- Buyers who find a substantially reduced price from a reputable seller.
- Photographers who value having 2x, 3x, 5x and 10x selectable positions more than owning the newest generation.
- Existing S24 Ultra owners who need a capable long-range phone camera but do not have a specific, verified reason to upgrade.
Check remaining software-support coverage, battery condition if buying used, warranty status and the exact storage and regional model. The S24 Ultra’s age can matter more to ownership value than the maximum zoom number printed in its specification sheet.

Distant wildlife and outdoor subjects
The S26 Ultra is the safest new-buy recommendation because its 5x telephoto camera gives a dedicated long lens and its 10x optical-quality mode extends the reach. The S25 Ultra offers the same listed positions and can be the better financial choice at a lower price. The S24 Ultra is viable when its four listed positions are available at a significant discount, but verify the condition and support period of the individual handset.
Portraits and people at a distance
A 3x position is a practical starting point for a tighter portrait without standing uncomfortably close. The 2x optical-quality mode on the S26 Ultra and S25 Ultra is useful when 3x would crop too much or when you need more of the surroundings. Keep the subject still when possible; computational zoom has less latitude when faces move between frames.
Stage performances and sports
Start at 5x when the subject is far across a venue, then move to 10x if the composition still leaves the subject too small. A monopod, railing or other stable support can make framing easier at long reach. Extremely high digital settings can make it difficult to keep a moving subject inside the frame, so 100x is better treated as an occasional locating tool than a default sports setting.

Travel and architecture
Use 3x for isolated architectural details and 5x for features high on a building or across a square. The 2x mode can preserve more context around a doorway, statue or street scene. If you are choosing between generations, prioritize the model and price that leave room in your budget for storage and a protective case; the listed zoom positions alone do not establish a guaranteed image-quality difference.
Low-light distant subjects
The supplied Samsung specifications do not state aperture, stabilization performance, autofocus speed or a measured night-zoom advantage for these models. In dim conditions, use the lowest zoom that gives the framing you need, brace the phone and capture several frames. Avoid claiming that one of these phones is definitively best at night based only on its 3x, 5x or 10x label.
Is 100x Space Zoom actually usable?
It is usable for specific purposes, but the number should be read as a maximum framing capability rather than a quality guarantee. At 100x, a tiny movement of your hands shifts the field of view dramatically. Heat shimmer, haze, rain and low contrast can erase detail before the phone’s processing begins. Moving subjects are especially difficult to keep centered.
For the best chance of a recognizable result:
- Begin at 5x or 10x so you can locate and focus on the subject.
- Brace the phone against a solid surface or use a support.
- Increase magnification gradually instead of jumping directly to 100x.
- Tap the subject to set focus and check that the focus box remains on it.
- Capture several frames and review them at full size before relying on one image.
Use the lower zoom settings when you want texture, readable lettering or a photograph that will be cropped later. Reserve 100x for situations where seeing or documenting a distant subject matters more than preserving fine detail.

1. Choose the least aggressive zoom that fills the frame
Every step beyond the dedicated telephoto positions asks more of the sensor and processing. Frame the subject with 3x or 5x first on the S26 Ultra or S25 Ultra. On the S24 Ultra, try the listed 2x, 3x, 5x and 10x positions and select the one that gives the subject enough size without unnecessary digital enlargement.

2. Stabilize before pressing the shutter
Lean against a wall, rest your elbows on a table or hold the phone with both hands. At long reach, press the shutter gently to avoid introducing a jolt. A burst or several individual frames gives you a better chance of finding one without motion blur.

3. Lock attention on the subject
Tap the main subject on the screen and watch the focus indicator. For wildlife, sports or people, track the subject between frames rather than assuming the phone will keep the same point when you change magnification.
4. Check exposure and contrast
Bright skies behind a subject can cause the phone to expose for the background. Tap the subject and adjust exposure if the interface allows it. Long-distance scenes often contain haze, so a slightly darker exposure can preserve highlights, but avoid making the subject so dark that processing has to lift excessive shadow noise.
5. Review at full size
A zoom preview can look convincing on the phone’s small display while hiding blur or processing artifacts. Open the captured image, inspect the subject at full size and keep the frame only if the detail meets your purpose.

What the published specifications do—and do not—tell you
| Question | What is established | What remains unestablished |
|---|---|---|
| Native telephoto reach | S26 Ultra and S25 Ultra list 3x and 5x telephoto positions; S24 Ultra lists 2x, 3x, 5x and 10x quad-telephoto positions. | The S24 sheet does not separately classify every listed position as optical. |
| Intermediate modes | S26 Ultra and S25 Ultra list 2x and 10x optical-quality zoom. | Independent detail or noise comparisons are not supplied. |
| Extreme reach | Each phone lists a 100x digital or Space Zoom mode. | No guaranteed sharpness, readability or keeper rate at 100x. |
| Aperture and low-light potential | Not stated in the cited zoom specifications. | Do not rank night performance from zoom labels alone. |
| Stabilization and autofocus | No quantified comparison is provided in the cited material. | Real-world steadiness and focus behavior require testing of the exact phone. |
This distinction matters because a longer advertised number is not automatically a longer optical lens. It also prevents a specification-sheet comparison from being mistaken for an independent image-quality test.
Price, storage, region and support checks
Current price is not fixed by the model name. Samsung and retailers can sell different storage capacities, colors and regional variants, while promotions change over time. Before buying, confirm the exact model number, storage capacity, network compatibility, warranty terms and whether the phone is new, refurbished or used.
For the S26 Ultra and S25 Ultra, compare the final delivered price rather than a temporary list-price difference. For the S24 Ultra, include battery age and remaining support coverage in the calculation; a low purchase price can be less attractive if the handset has heavy wear or limited warranty protection.
Support horizons and regional availability should be checked on Samsung’s current local product and support pages because they can change by market. No single global price or availability statement applies to every reader.

Final recommendation
Buy the Galaxy S26 Ultra if you want the newest Samsung zoom phone and the clearest current recommendation: dedicated 3x and 5x telephoto cameras, 2x and 10x optical-quality modes and up to 100x digital zoom. Choose the Galaxy S25 Ultra when it delivers those same listed zoom positions at a meaningfully lower price. Choose the Galaxy S24 Ultra only when its 2x, 3x, 5x and 10x quad-telephoto layout, condition and discounted price outweigh the benefits of buying a newer generation.
