There is no official ranking of the “best” Rust server maps. For most new servers, a procedural map is the simplest and most reliable choice: set a level, seed, and world size. Choose a custom .map file when you need an authored layout, custom monuments, or a controlled event space. Custom maps require a publicly reachable direct-download URL, and changing either approach can wipe placed buildings, so test the map and back up your server before players join.
Choose the map type that fits your server
Rust offers two practical map workflows. A procedural map is generated by the server from a numeric seed and a world-size value. A custom map is an existing .map file that the server downloads from a URL defined with server.levelurl. The right choice depends less on finding a supposedly lucky seed than on how much control and operational work your server can support.

“Best” therefore means best for your operating model. A seed preview or a recommendation from a host blog is not a guarantee that the same terrain will suit your population, plugins, or Rust version. Generate or load the map on your own server, inspect it, and only then announce a wipe or opening date.
Procedural maps: set a seed and world size
What the parameters do
A procedural launch needs the level name Procedural Map, a whole-number seed, and a world-size value. The Facepunch Rust Wiki example is:

The documented seed range is 0 through 2,147,483,647. The wiki suggests world sizes from 1,000 to 6,000. Larger worlds generally create more terrain to explore and store more map data, but the documentation does not provide an official player-capacity or memory table. Treat size as a capacity and gameplay decision that must be validated on your hardware, not as a number that automatically makes a server better.

- Stop the Rust server cleanly and back up its save and configuration files. A map change is a destructive world operation for placed objects.
- Open the startup command or service definition that launches
RustDedicated.exe. - Set
+server.level "Procedural Map". - Choose a seed from 0 to 2,147,483,647 and set it with
+server.seed. - Set the desired map size, within the commonly documented 1,000-to-6,000 range, with
+server.worldsize. - Start the server and watch the console for world-generation and save-path messages.
- Connect privately, inspect the terrain and key locations, and confirm that your expected plugins and server settings load before opening the server to players.
Generated worlds are saved in the server’s maps folder with a filename in the form proceduralmap.SIZE.SEED.map. For example, a size of 4,000 and seed 1,234 produce a filename corresponding to those two values. The exact folder location can vary with the installation or host panel, so use the path shown by your server’s own files and logs.

Set a procedural map in a hosting panel
Panels use different labels, but the safe sequence is consistent:
- Stop the server.
- Open the startup, world, or map settings page.
- Enter the numeric seed and world size.
- Save the settings and restart.
- If the old world keeps loading, inspect the maps directory and remove the old
proceduralmapfile only after making a backup and confirming that the panel does not manage it automatically. - Join as an administrator and verify the new terrain before players return.
Some panels regenerate only when the old procedural file is removed; others handle regeneration from their control panel. Do not delete files blindly: preserve a copy if you may need to roll back or investigate a failed start.
Why the same seed is not a permanent promise
Rust updates can alter procedural generation. A seed that produced a particular coastline or monument arrangement on one game version may produce a different result after an update. Record the Rust version, seed, size, and generated map file for each production wipe, and recheck the world after updates. A seed database can help you find candidates, but a blog claim that a database previews more than 20,000 seeds is not an official game guarantee.

Custom maps: load a hosted .map file
How server.levelurl works
With a custom map, the server does not receive the file through a normal panel upload. Instead, it retrieves the .map file from a public direct-download URL. The URL must return the file itself. A web page that displays a download button, requires a click, redirects to an access form, or otherwise needs browser interaction will fail because the server cannot complete those steps.
The file must stay online at all times. New players download the map from that address, so taking the file offline after the initial server start can prevent newcomers from joining. A local path such as file:/// works only for local testing; remote players cannot download a map that exists solely on your computer.
Prepare the file and URL
- Export or obtain the finished Rust
.mapfile. - Place it on storage that permits unauthenticated direct downloads and provides a stable HTTPS or HTTP file URL.
- Test the URL in a private browser window and with a command-line HTTP client, if available. The response should download the file directly rather than show an HTML page or request a login.
- Keep the filename and URL stable while players are using the server. If you replace the file, test the replacement before announcing the change.
Configure the server
- Stop the server and create a complete backup of the current save, configuration, and existing map files.
- Set the startup option
+server.levelurlto the complete direct-download URL. - Remove procedural startup options such as
+server.worldsizeand+server.seed. Leaving them in the command can conflict with the custom-map workflow. - Do not rely on
file:///for a public server. - Start the server and monitor the console for download, parsing, or map-load errors.
- Connect from a separate client or test account. Confirm that the client can obtain the map and that the expected terrain and placed structures appear.
- Keep the file hosted and reachable for the lifetime of the map.
Facepunch introduced levelurl with the Puzzle Update as an alternative to the level, seed, and size parameters. Documentation around custom-map hosting has changed over time, so verify the exact syntax against the current Facepunch documentation before a production wipe. The custom-map wiki page is marked unfinished, and the server-creation page has been described as roughly three years old; those caveats matter when a panel or server build uses newer labels.

What custom maps can and cannot tell you from their size
A custom map’s nominal dimensions do not predict its entity count. Depending on how many custom monuments and structures the author placed, it can contain more or fewer entities than a procedural map of the same size. Inspect performance and memory use on your own server rather than assuming that equal dimensions mean equal load.
Wipes, backups, and what survives a map change
Changing the seed or world size starts a new map. Bases, deployables, and other placed objects from the old world are lost. Blueprints survive because they are stored separately from the map save. Switching to a custom map is also a world change, so treat it as a wipe unless you have a tested migration plan for the specific server setup.
Pre-wipe checklist
- Announce the planned wipe time and the new seed, size, or custom-map identity.
- Stop the server and copy the save, configuration, logs, and current map file to storage outside the live installation.
- Write down the previous Rust version, map parameters, and any panel-specific settings.
- Test the new world privately before allowing players to connect.
- Keep the old backup until the new map has survived a normal restart and a player download test.
Do not promise that a seed is permanent across updates. Even when the numeric seed stays unchanged, generation changes can alter the resulting map.

How large should a Rust server map be?
There is no official server-size or memory recommendation in the available Facepunch material. Host blog posts offer conflicting rules of thumb, so use them only as starting points for testing:

Measure your own server during a realistic load test. Watch memory, CPU, storage growth, tick behavior, connection time, and restart duration while using the same plugins and custom entities you will run in production. A smaller map with many custom structures may stress the server differently from a larger, mostly procedural world.
Choosing a “best” map without a verified ranking
Choose procedural generation when simplicity matters
- You want the shortest setup path and do not need an authored layout.
- You can evaluate a few seeds privately and select one that fits your community.
- You prefer the server to generate and retain its own map file rather than depend on an external download host.
- You are prepared to retest after Rust updates because generation can change.
Choose a custom map when layout control matters
- Your event or community needs a particular arrangement of monuments, arenas, roads, or landmarks.
- You are willing to maintain a reliable public file URL and test downloads from outside the server machine.
- You can evaluate the map’s entity count and performance with your actual plugin set.
- You can communicate the download requirement and keep the file available for late-joining players.
Reject a candidate map when its delivery or maintenance fails
A visually attractive map is not production-ready if its URL serves an HTML landing page, requires authentication, disappears after a short period, or cannot be downloaded by a remote client. Likewise, a highly recommended seed is not useful if it has not been generated and checked on the Rust version you will run.
Troubleshooting a custom map that will not load
The server reports a download or HTTP error
- Open the configured URL without being logged in. If you see a webpage, consent screen, cloud-storage preview, or download button, replace it with a direct file endpoint.
- Check that the file is publicly readable and that the host has not blocked the server’s request.
- Verify that the URL has no accidental spaces, truncated characters, or temporary expiration.
- Confirm that the hosted object is the intended
.mapfile rather than a renamed archive or an HTML error response.
The server still generates the old procedural world
- Inspect the complete startup command for leftover
+server.seedor+server.worldsizearguments. - Confirm that
+server.levelurlis present in the command actually used by the service or panel, not merely in an unsaved template. - Stop the server before changing settings, then restart and read the first map-loading messages.
- Check for an old local procedural map only after backing it up; some panels may keep reusing it.
The map loads for the server but players cannot join
- Test from a machine outside the server’s network. A local
file:///path or private LAN address cannot serve remote players. - Keep the URL online and unchanged while players connect.
- Check that the client is downloading the file rather than being redirected to a page that requires interaction.
- Review the server log for parsing or version errors and regenerate or re-export the map if it is incompatible with the running Rust build.
The terrain differs from a preview or an earlier wipe
Verify the Rust version, seed, and world size. Procedural generation can change between updates. For a custom map, verify that the URL still points to the same file and that a replacement upload did not silently change its contents.
Operational checklist for opening the server
- Decide between procedural and custom generation based on layout control, setup effort, player downloads, and URL dependence.
- Record the exact Rust build, seed and size or custom-map URL, startup arguments, and wipe date.
- Back up the existing save and map before changing anything.
- Apply only the parameters for the selected workflow: procedural settings for a generated map, or
server.levelurlwithout procedural seed and size options for a custom file. - Start the server privately and inspect the terrain, monuments, entities, console output, and restart behavior.
- Test a player connection from outside the server machine; for custom maps, confirm that the file downloads directly.
- Check memory, CPU, storage, and connection performance under realistic population and plugin conditions.
- Keep the custom file hosted continuously, or retain the generated procedural map and its backup according to your rollback plan.
- Only after these checks should you publish the server’s wipe information and invite the wider community.
Bottom line
Use a procedural map when you want a straightforward Rust server launch: select a valid seed and world size, generate it, and test the result. Use a custom map when a designed layout justifies the additional hosting and download requirements. Neither option has an officially certified “best” map. Your dependable choice is the map that has been generated or downloaded successfully on your own Rust version, inspected before launch, and supported by a verified backup and recovery plan.
