The best Rust 2x setup is one that states exactly what is doubled. Set core server values in server/<identity>/cfg/server.cfg, use a maintained plugin for category-level gathering or loot controls, and list the server as Modded when gameplay-changing plugins are active. A defensible full 2x policy sets every promised gather category to 2.0 and handles loot separately instead of assuming that faster node gathering also doubles container rewards.
If you want to run this configuration on a hosted Rust server, Godlike.Host Rust servers provide a Pterodactyl-based game panel with a built-in mod installer and updater, plus SFTP/FTP access.

What “2x” should mean on a Rust server
“2x” is not one universal Rust switch. It is a promise about progression speed, and that promise can cover different systems:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Gather-only 2x: Resource gathering is doubled, while container loot follows the normal tables.
- Gather plus pickups: Gathering is doubled and natural resource pickups are included.
- Gather plus loot: Gathering is doubled and container or scrap rewards are also increased.
- Full-category 2x: Every category exposed by the selected gather plugin is set consistently, including barrels, bonus resources, resource dispensers, Giant Excavator, natural pickups, quarries and survey charges.
Write the scope in the server description and in every wipe announcement. Players use “2x” to estimate how quickly they can build, research and replace equipment. If only ore nodes are doubled but barrels, pickups or quarries remain normal, the server should say so rather than implying a complete 2x economy.

The multiplier scale
UGather documents the multiplier as a percentage of the normal rate. The important values are:
| Value | Meaning | Practical interpretation |
|---|---|---|
0.5 |
50% of normal | Half-rate gathering |
1.0 |
Normal rate | Unmodified baseline |
1.5 |
150% of normal | One and a half times the baseline |
2.0 |
Double gather | The value to use for a 2x gather promise |
Use 2.0, not 2 interpreted as an arbitrary percentage, for categories managed by UGather. The same principle applies to any other plugin: read that plugin’s documented scale before entering values, because a field labelled “percent” may use a different format than a multiplier field.
Choose your 2x policy before editing files
Start with the player experience
A gather-only server creates a faster building and crafting loop without automatically flooding players with guns, components or scrap from containers. It is the clearest choice when you want more time spent building and less time farming, while leaving the normal risk and reward of monuments and roadside barrels intact.
A gather-plus-loot server accelerates both sides of progression. Players obtain materials from nodes faster and also receive more value from containers. That can move solo players and teams through weapon tiers and base upgrades much sooner, so it should be described as “2x gather and 2x loot” rather than simply “2x.”
Decide whether consistency matters more than simplicity
Rust gathering is distributed across several sources. A server that doubles only resource dispensers can feel inconsistent when a player receives normal amounts from a barrel, quarry or natural pickup. If your description says “full 2x gather,” define a policy for every category your plugin exposes:
- Barrels
- Bonus resources
- Resource dispensers
- Giant Excavator
- Natural pickups
- Quarries
- Survey charges
You can intentionally exclude a category, but name the exclusion. “2x nodes, normal quarry” is more useful than an unqualified 2x label.
Account for maintenance
Core server variables are comparatively stable, but plugin-driven settings depend on compatibility with the current Rust build and the server framework. A plugin that worked before a Rust update may need a new release or configuration migration. Treat compatibility review as part of each wipe, not as an emergency task after players report missing rewards.
Recommended settings profiles
There is no official universal “best” numeric preset. The available documentation defines the controls and their meanings, but it does not establish a player-preference survey or a single ideal combination. Use one of these clearly labelled policies and adjust only after observing your community’s progression pace.
Rank #2
| Profile | Gather categories | Loot treatment | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2x gather | Set promised categories to 2.0 |
Normal container tables | Faster building and crafting without a broad loot acceleration |
| Full 2x gather | Set every selected UGather category to 2.0 |
Normal container tables unless separately changed | Owners who want barrels, pickups, quarries and industrial sources to match nodes |
| 2x gather plus 2x loot | Set promised gather categories to 2.0 |
Set the documented loot and scrap multipliers to the advertised 2x value | Communities that want a substantially faster overall wipe |
The table separates gather from loot on purpose. Better Loot documents a configurable global Loot Multiplier and Scrap Multiplier, per-table loot configuration, and separate gather-rate data files. A gather multiplier does not automatically rewrite container tables.
Build the configuration in the right place
Keep core variables in server.cfg
Facepunch’s server guidance recommends a server configuration file for storing multiple variable changes. Use the identity-specific path:
server/<identity>/cfg/server.cfg
Keeping related values together makes a wipe or migration repeatable. It also gives you one file to review when a setting appears to have reverted. Save a copy before editing, and keep a dated backup outside the live server directory so a failed update does not erase your known-good configuration.

Separate core settings from plugin settings
Install Oxide/uMod only when you need plugin controls that the core server configuration does not provide. Gather categories and detailed loot tables are examples of controls normally handled through plugins. Avoid placing the same rule in multiple systems unless you know which one has precedence; two gather plugins can overwrite one another or make the final rate difficult to audit.
Document the network and administration details
Facepunch’s server guide also covers the server identity configuration path, ports and RCON setup. Record those values with the rest of your deployment notes. RCON credentials should be treated as administrative secrets, and port changes should be reflected in your host’s firewall and forwarding rules. The exact values depend on your host and deployment, so do not copy a port from another server without checking your own environment.
Step-by-step: configure a 2x gather server
- Choose the promise. Decide whether the name means gather only, gather plus pickups, or gather plus loot. List each included category before making changes.
- Create or open the identity configuration directory. Navigate to
server/<identity>/cfg/and create or editserver.cfg. Keep your core server variables together in this file. - Install the plugin framework only if needed. If category-level gathering or detailed loot control is required, install Oxide/uMod according to its server documentation. If core variables are sufficient for your policy, do not add a plugin solely because other 2x servers use one.
- Configure gather categories. In UGather, set each category you advertise as doubled to
2.0. For a full-category policy, review barrels, bonus resources, resource dispensers, Giant Excavator, natural pickups, quarries and survey charges one by one. - Configure loot independently. If your server promises 2x loot, set the Better Loot global Loot Multiplier and Scrap Multiplier according to the plugin’s documented configuration. Review per-table loot settings as well; a global value alone may not express the exact table policy you intend.
- Check for conflicts. Review installed plugins for another gather manager, loot manager or data file that can override the values. Keep one authoritative setting for each category and record which plugin owns it.
- Restart and verify. After saving changes, restart the server through your normal administration method. Test at least one representative source from every advertised category rather than checking only an ore node.
- Publish the exact policy. Put the multiplier values and exclusions in the server description and wipe announcement. State separately whether containers and scrap are normal or modified.
- Recheck after updates. After each Rust update, confirm that the framework and plugins load, that their data files are still present, and that the advertised rates remain in effect.
How to verify that “2x” is really consistent
Use a category checklist
- Break a resource node and compare the observed yield with the expected doubled behaviour.
- Collect a natural pickup and test a barrel if both are included in your promise.
- Check a quarry, survey charge and Giant Excavator output when those systems are advertised as 2x.
- Open representative loot containers separately from gather tests.
- Inspect plugin logs or configuration output for load errors after a restart.
Do not treat one successful node test as proof that the entire economy is doubled. Category-level controls are the reason to test each source independently.
Diagnose an unexpected normal rate
- Confirm that the edited file belongs to the active server identity.
- Check that the plugin loaded after the Rust update and did not report a configuration or data-file error.
- Look for a second gather plugin or a competing data file.
- Verify that the affected source is included in your stated policy and was not intentionally left at the normal value of
1.0. - Restart after correcting the authoritative setting, then repeat the category-specific test.
Diagnose unexpected loot
If gathering is doubled but containers are normal, the configuration may be working exactly as designed: gather and loot are separate systems. Check the Better Loot global multiplier, scrap multiplier and per-table settings rather than changing gather values. Conversely, if loot is accelerated but gathering is normal, inspect the gather-rate data files and the plugin that owns those categories.

Community or Modded: the correct listing
A 2x server that uses gameplay-changing plugins should be listed as Modded. Facepunch’s community-server guidance states that “Any plugin that affects a player’s gameplay in any way” is covered; its examples include gather-rate changes, item spawns, player spawns and smelting mechanics. uMod’s server-section guidance likewise places gameplay changes such as gather-rate modifications and Gather Manager in Modded.
Rank #3
- Acrylic Painting Pla Plastic
Changing the listing to Community does not remove the gameplay modification. Choose Modded whenever an active plugin changes gathering, loot, spawns, smelting or another player-facing mechanic. If you remove those plugins and run only an unmodified ruleset, reassess the listing under the current server guidelines.
What to put in the server description
A precise description prevents the most common 2x misunderstanding. Include:
- The exact scope: gather only, full-category gather, or gather plus loot.
- The multiplier value, such as
2.0, for the categories you changed. - Any categories left at normal rate.
- Whether loot tables and scrap are normal or separately multiplied.
- The current wipe date and a note that plugin compatibility is reviewed after Rust updates.
For example, a truthful description could say: “2x gather across configured UGather categories at 2.0; container loot and scrap remain normal.” If loot is changed, name that separately and identify whether the change applies globally or only to selected tables.
Common mistakes to avoid
Doubling only ore nodes
Players may interpret “2x” as applying to every gathering source. If barrels, pickups, quarries, survey charges or excavator output remain at 1.0, either change the description or configure the missing categories.
Assuming gather affects loot
Gather-rate data and container tables are separate controls. Configure loot deliberately with a loot plugin when the server promises faster container or scrap progression.
Installing overlapping plugins
Multiple managers can override values or make troubleshooting impossible. Assign each category to one authoritative plugin and remove obsolete configuration files when migrating.
Ignoring update compatibility
A Rust update can leave a plugin loaded incorrectly or change how its data files are read. Test the server after every update and amend the wipe announcement if a promised feature is temporarily unavailable.

Gameplay-changing plugins belong under Modded under the cited Facepunch and uMod guidance. The label is a compliance decision, not a marketing setting.
Final decision framework
Before publishing a wipe, answer four questions:
- Scope: Is the promise gather only, or gather plus loot?
- Consistency: Are barrels, pickups, quarry, survey, excavator and other advertised categories all covered?
- Progression: Will the chosen scope move solo and team players through weapons and bases faster than intended?
- Maintenance: Can you verify plugin compatibility and restore the settings after each Rust update?
If the answers are documented, tested and visible to players, the setting is defensible regardless of whether you choose gather-only or a broader accelerated economy. The “best” 2x configuration is the one whose numbers, categories, loot policy and Modded classification all match the experience you actually operate.
