For a low-end PC, start with the Minimum or Low preset, shorten draw distance, disable shadows and costly lighting effects, and lower render scaling only when necessary. A mid-range PC should start at Mid and raise one demanding option at a time. A high-end PC can start at High or Ultra, but sustained frame pacing still matters more than an uncapped peak. RuneScape’s NXT client includes Minimum, Low, Mid, High, Ultra, Ultra+ and Custom modes, so the best setup is a stable baseline adjusted for your monitor, resolution and busiest play areas.

What the RuneScape presets actually do

The NXT client groups graphics options into six quality levels: Minimum, Low, Mid, High, Ultra and Ultra+. Changing an individual option after selecting a preset switches the client to Custom. Presets are useful starting points, not performance guarantees. The same setting can feel smooth in an open area and produce traversal stutter in a crowded hub, so use a preset first and then test the places where you normally play.

The largest performance costs usually come from draw distance, shadow quality, anti-aliasing, reflections and water detail, ambient occlusion, bloom, volumetric lighting, particle quality, anisotropic filtering, texture quality and game render scaling. These options affect different parts of the workload: draw distance and shadows add scene geometry and shadow maps, effects add lighting or post-processing work, and render scaling changes how many pixels the GPU must produce.

Choose a starting profile by PC tier

PC tier Starting preset Primary goal Target approach
Low-end Minimum, then Low if stable Consistent frame pacing and fewer freezes Reduce scene complexity and effects before lowering resolution
Mid-range Mid Balanced image quality and responsiveness Raise one expensive option at a time and retest busy areas
High-end High or Ultra Higher clarity and longer viewing distance Keep a sustained cap; tune Ultra+ only when the display and GPU justify it

There are no published, reproducible FPS figures for every preset, RuneScape area or current graphics card. Treat these profiles as starting points and judge success by stable frame delivery at your own resolution rather than by an advertised number.

Best settings for a low-end PC

Apply the Minimum preset first. If it remains stable while you move through your usual areas, try Low and keep only the changes your computer can sustain. Stability is more useful than a brief high reading in an empty scene.

Low-end baseline

  • Preset: Minimum; move to Low only after testing.
  • Draw distance: Low. This is often one of the fastest ways to reduce scene and geometry work.
  • Shadow quality: Off or Low.
  • Anti-aliasing: Off. Try FXAA only if jagged edges are distracting and performance remains steady.
  • Ambient occlusion: Off.
  • Bloom: Off.
  • Volumetric lighting: Off.
  • Water detail and lighting detail: Low or Off.
  • Textures: Low. Use a higher texture setting only if memory is sufficient and stutter does not increase.
  • Particles: Low or Off.
  • Anisotropic filtering: Low or Off.
  • Ground decoration and tree-canopy effects: Off where those controls are available.
  • Game render scaling: Begin at 80–100 percent. Reduce it below that range only if crowded areas still stutter after the other changes.
  • Foreground FPS: Set a cap your system can sustain continuously. A lower, stable cap is preferable to fluctuating peaks.

When to lower render scaling

Render scaling is a resolution trade-off. At 100 percent, the game renders at the selected display resolution. Lowering it reduces GPU pixel work but makes the image softer. Keep it at 100 percent if the problem is mainly CPU-bound scene traversal, because lowering the scale will not remove every hitch. If the GPU is saturated and the frame rate falls during effects-heavy scenes, reduce scaling in small steps and check text and interface clarity after each change.

What low hardware can realistically provide

Jagex’s Streaming: Zero to Hero guidance describes bare-minimum hardware as an experience that will not be smooth, while recommending low graphics settings and streaming at 720p and 30 frames per second for that tier. That is a reference for a very limited system, not a universal cap for every older computer. If you are playing locally, use the same principle: prioritize a consistent target that the machine can hold instead of chasing unstable highs.

Best settings for a mid-range PC

Choose Mid as the baseline and leave render scaling at 100 percent at your monitor’s native resolution. Mid-range systems often have enough headroom for selective visual upgrades, but raising every demanding option at once makes it difficult to identify which change caused stutter.

Balanced profile

  • Preset: Mid.
  • Draw distance: Medium. Test High in the areas you visit most before keeping it.
  • Shadows: Low or Medium.
  • Anti-aliasing: FXAA or Low.
  • Ambient occlusion and bloom: Low or Medium if frame pacing remains even.
  • Textures: Compressed or enabled when available memory allows it without hitching.
  • Water, lighting and particles: Start at the preset values; raise one category only after a traversal test.
  • Anisotropic filtering: Increase gradually if ground textures look blurred at oblique angles.
  • Render scaling: 100 percent at native resolution.

A safe tuning sequence

  1. Load the Mid preset and set your intended foreground FPS cap.
  2. Play through a busy hub, a reworked area and any route where you normally notice stutter.
  3. Raise one demanding option, such as draw distance or shadows, rather than several together.
  4. Repeat the same route and watch for uneven frame delivery, pauses while turning the camera or delayed asset loading.
  5. Keep the change only when the image improves without introducing those symptoms; otherwise return to the previous value.

This one-variable method also makes troubleshooting easier later. If a new area performs worse after an update, you know which setting to reduce first.

Best settings for a high-end PC

High-end hardware can begin at High or Ultra. Ultra+ is appropriate when your display resolution and sustained frame target leave headroom for its additional work; it is not automatically the best choice simply because the computer is new.

Quality-first profile

  • Preset: High or Ultra. Try Ultra+ only after checking frame pacing in crowded hubs and reworked areas.
  • Draw distance: High or Ultra, depending on how far you need to see and the frame cap you want to hold.
  • Shadows: High or Ultra, then retest camera movement in busy scenes.
  • Anti-aliasing: FXAA or MSAA according to image quality and available GPU headroom.
  • Water detail, lighting, ambient occlusion, bloom, particles and volumetric lighting: Raise incrementally instead of assuming every option can remain at maximum.
  • Anisotropic filtering: Increase when you want clearer surfaces viewed at an angle.
  • Textures: Use the higher setting when memory capacity and frame pacing remain comfortable.
  • Render scaling: 100 percent is the sensible baseline. Go above native scaling only when the display and GPU clearly benefit and your frame cap remains stable.
  • Foreground FPS: Match the cap to the display’s refresh target when possible. A stable cap usually looks smoother than an uncapped result that constantly rises and falls.

Why maximum settings can still reduce FPS

Long draw distance, advanced shadows and reflections continue to add work even on powerful systems. A high-end PC can render them faster, but it cannot make their cost zero. If you prefer a fixed 60-frame target, for example, reduce the setting that causes dips below that target rather than keeping every slider at maximum. Players with high-refresh displays should use the same rule at their chosen target; the correct setting is the highest combination that remains consistent in demanding locations.

Setting-by-setting performance guide

Use this section when a preset is close to right but one symptom remains. Change one control, retest the same route and record whether the problem is solved.

Draw distance

Draw distance determines how far scenery and objects are prepared for display. Lower values reduce scene complexity and are particularly useful when turning the camera or travelling through areas with many visible objects. Increase it only after the foreground cap is stable.

Shadow quality

Shadows require additional rendering passes and shadow-map detail. They are among the clearest quality-versus-performance choices. Off or Low is appropriate for a low-end system; High or Ultra should be tested in busy areas even on a powerful PC.

Anti-aliasing

Anti-aliasing smooths jagged edges. Off gives the most headroom, FXAA is a relatively light compromise, and MSAA can demand more GPU resources while producing a different image. Choose based on visible edge quality after the frame cap is secure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reflections and water detail

Reflections and water effects add rendering work that may be noticeable mainly in scenes containing large reflective surfaces. Lower them when dips occur near water or when other settings are already modest.

Ambient occlusion and bloom

Ambient occlusion adds contact shading around objects; bloom adds a glow to bright areas. Both can improve atmosphere but are not required for readable gameplay. Disable them first on low-end hardware and raise them cautiously on mid-range systems.

Volumetric lighting

Volumetric lighting creates visible light shafts and atmospheric depth. It can be expensive in scenes with many light sources. Keep it Off on a low-end profile and add it only after core frame pacing is stable.

Particles

Particle quality affects effects such as spells, environmental bursts and other animated elements. Lowering it can help during effect-heavy encounters without changing the entire scene’s geometry.

Anisotropic filtering

Anisotropic filtering improves texture clarity at shallow viewing angles. It is a visual refinement rather than a first-line performance control. Keep it Low or Off while diagnosing a weak system, then raise it if GPU headroom remains.

Textures and lighting detail

Higher textures can improve surface definition but may increase memory pressure. Lighting detail changes how illumination is calculated and displayed. On a low-end PC, keep both Low or Off where possible; on a mid-range or high-end PC, increase them only after testing for hitching.

Game render scaling

Render scaling changes the internal resolution before the image is presented at your display resolution. It can rescue GPU-limited scenes, but the trade-off is softness, especially around text and fine interface elements. Lower it after expensive effects have been reduced, not as an automatic first step.

How to test FPS and frame pacing without misleading yourself

  1. Pick the resolution and refresh target you actually intend to use.
  2. Apply a preset appropriate to your hardware and set a foreground FPS cap that seems sustainable.
  3. Repeat a short route through your busiest normal locations, including camera turns and movement through populated areas.
  4. Watch for uneven delivery: brief freezes, hitching during traversal, sudden drops when effects appear or a camera pan that feels inconsistent.
  5. Change one expensive setting and repeat the same route.
  6. Keep a setting only when it improves the picture without breaking the target. If several options are changed together, undo them and test individually.

This method is more useful than comparing a single idle reading. The available evidence does not establish a universal FPS number for each preset, so your own repeatable route and target are the meaningful reference.

Hardware requirements and what they do not promise

The Steam listing gives examples including an Intel i3-6100 or any AMD Ryzen processor, with graphics examples such as a GeForce GTX 600-series card, Intel UHD Graphics 610 or AMD Radeon R7 260. These are requirement examples for running the client, not a promise of 60 FPS at Ultra, a particular resolution or every RuneScape area. Memory, cooling, background processes, drivers and the number of visible effects can all change the result.

If the game remains slow at Minimum with a low draw distance and effects disabled, first determine whether the limit is the CPU, GPU, memory or thermal behavior. Lowering render scaling mainly helps a GPU-bound workload; it will not remove every CPU-side traversal hitch. Conversely, increasing draw distance or shadows can expose a GPU limit even when the processor is adequate.

Comparison of the three practical profiles

Setting area Low-end stability profile Mid-range balanced profile High-end quality profile
Preset Minimum, then Low Mid High or Ultra; Ultra+ selectively
Draw distance Low Medium; High after testing High or Ultra
Shadows Off or Low Low or Medium High or Ultra after busy-area testing
Anti-aliasing Off; FXAA if stable FXAA or Low FXAA or MSAA, based on headroom
Effects Ambient occlusion, bloom and volumetric lighting Off; particles and water Low Low or Medium, raised individually Raise incrementally, watching the cap
Textures and filtering Low or Off Compressed or enabled if memory allows Higher values when memory and pacing permit
Render scaling 80–100 percent initially; lower only if needed 100 percent at native resolution 100 percent baseline; above native only with a clear benefit
Primary target Stable 30 or another sustainable cap Stable target selected for the display Stable 60 or a higher refresh target supported by the system
Power and heat Usually lowest workload and heat Moderate, depending on upgraded options Highest; monitor sustained behavior rather than peak readings

Common problems and targeted fixes

The game stutters when entering a busy area

Lower draw distance first, then shadows and volumetric lighting. If the hitch remains while the average frame rate looks acceptable, test lower textures or render scaling and check whether the system is running out of memory or reducing clock speed from heat.

The picture is smooth but looks too blurry

Return render scaling toward 100 percent before raising effects. If the image is still jagged, try FXAA rather than immediately enabling a heavier anti-aliasing mode. Keep textures and filtering separate from render scaling so you can identify which change affects clarity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frame rate is high in empty areas but falls in hubs

Use the hub as your reference scene. Reduce draw distance, shadows, particles and reflections or water detail in that order, then retest the same route. Do not select a setting based only on an empty-area reading.

A high-end PC still has uneven motion

Set a foreground cap instead of leaving the game uncapped, then lower the single setting that causes dips below the cap. High or Ultra does not eliminate the cost of long draw distance, advanced shadows or reflections.

Lowering resolution did not fix the problem

The bottleneck may be CPU-side scene work rather than GPU pixel work. Restore a readable render scale and reduce draw distance, shadows, particles or other scene-heavy options. Continue testing with the same route so the result is comparable.

A practical decision rule

  • Choose the lowest preset that already feels consistent in your busiest normal location.
  • Raise visual quality one expensive control at a time.
  • Keep a change only when it stays inside your chosen frame target during movement, camera turns and effects.
  • When performance breaks, undo the most recent demanding change before lowering everything.
  • Use render scaling as a GPU-focused adjustment, not a substitute for reducing CPU-heavy scene complexity.

The result should be a profile you can sustain for an entire session, not a maximum-settings screenshot. RuneScape’s preset ladder makes the first choice simple; repeatable testing in your own locations determines the final Custom configuration.
