For the smoothest Fallout: New Vegas path-tracing experience in RTX Remix, open the overlay with Alt-X, begin with DLSS Super Resolution on Quality, and lower the mode only when GPU time is too high. Establish a stable base frame rate before enabling frame generation. If performance remains limited, reduce path-tracing and lighting quality first, then volumetric lighting or fog. Keep denoising enabled, test several representative scenes, and save the working values in rtx.conf.

There is no organization-published, repeatable benchmark for a universal New Vegas preset. Performance depends on the community runtime build, replacement textures and meshes, resolution, GPU, and scene. Treat reported frame rates as examples rather than promises.

Recommended settings at a glance

Setting or action Starting point When to change it
RTX Remix overlay Press Alt-X Use it to reach General, Rendering and Content controls
DLSS Super Resolution Quality Use Balanced or Performance when the GPU is the bottleneck
Frame generation Off while tuning the base rate Enable after frame pacing and latency are acceptable
Path-tracing quality High enough for the desired image Lower before disabling path tracing
Lighting quality High initially Reduce when direct and indirect lighting is expensive
Volumetrics High initially Reduce for costly outdoor fog, smoke or shafts of light
Denoising Enabled Disable only for troubleshooting an image problem
Content replacements Enabled Temporarily disable groups to identify a heavy replacement
Configuration Save to rtx.conf Save after testing outdoor, interior and combat scenes

The Quality, Balanced and Performance order is practical tuning advice, not an official New Vegas preset. The best value is the highest internal resolution that maintains acceptable frame pacing in your heaviest scene.

How to open and use the RTX Remix controls

Open the overlay

  1. Launch the Fallout: New Vegas build that includes the RTX Remix runtime.
  2. Press Alt-X to open the Remix overlay.
  3. Use the General tab for performance-oriented upscaling and latency controls.
  4. Use the Rendering tab for path-tracing image-quality controls.
  5. Use the Content tab when you need to isolate an expensive material, mesh or light replacement.

The overlay settings can be saved as rtx.conf beside the runtime folder. Saving a known-good configuration matters because a runtime update, a changed replacement pack or a new resolution can alter the load enough to require retuning.

Change one group at a time

Do not switch every option simultaneously. First select a DLSS mode, then observe GPU utilization, frame pacing and image stability. Next adjust path-tracing quality, lighting and volumetrics in that order. A one-step-at-a-time process tells you which setting actually helped and makes it easier to restore image quality later.

DLSS Super Resolution: the first performance lever

NVIDIA describes DLSS 3 as combining Frame Generation and Super Resolution to increase performance while retaining high-quality visuals. Its documentation also identifies powerful RTX GPUs as the clearest platform for full path tracing. In Remix, Super Resolution lowers the internal render resolution and reconstructs the output at your display resolution, reducing the ray-tracing work the GPU must perform.

Choose a mode by GPU load

Mode Use it when Trade-off
Quality Your base frame rate is already close to your target and GPU headroom remains Best image detail of these three modes, but the smallest performance gain
Balanced Quality is slightly too slow or outdoor scenes dip below your comfort range More performance with a modest reduction in internal resolution
Performance GPU time is the limiting factor and you need the largest Super Resolution gain Lower internal resolution can make fine foliage, wires and distant geometry less stable

Start at Quality rather than assuming Performance is automatically best. If the GPU is saturated, move to Balanced and then Performance. If the GPU is not saturated, lowering DLSS may not solve a CPU, asset-streaming or frame-pacing problem; investigate those limits instead.

Check image stability, not only the counter

Compare thin geometry, foliage, signage, fences and moving characters while walking and turning the camera. Look for shimmering, ghost trails and loss of small details. A mode that reports a higher average frame rate can still feel worse if reconstruction artifacts are distracting or frame pacing is uneven.

Frame generation should come after a stable base rate

Frame generation creates additional displayed frames, but it does not remove the cost of rendering the underlying frames. Enable it only after you have selected a DLSS Super Resolution mode and confirmed that the game is producing consistent base frames.

A practical order

  1. Run with frame generation off.
  2. Choose Quality, Balanced or Performance based on GPU time.
  3. Test camera movement, combat and interiors for frame pacing and latency.
  4. Enable frame generation and repeat the same tests.
  5. Keep it enabled only if the smoother presentation outweighs added latency or visible interpolation artifacts.

Frame generation is most useful when the underlying rate is already reasonably high. It cannot make a severely CPU-limited or stutter-prone installation behave like a high-refresh native render, and it does not make a heavy replacement pack free to render.

Lower path-tracing quality before turning path tracing off

The Remix Rendering tab groups the controls into Pathtracing, Lighting, Volumetrics and Denoising. If GPU time is excessive, reduce quality progressively rather than abandoning the defining feature of this project.

Path-tracing controls

Lower the main path-tracing quality when the entire scene is expensive, especially at high output resolutions. This is the broadest image-quality reduction, so check reflections, indirect light and shadow detail after each change.

Lighting quality

Reduce lighting quality when scenes with many dynamic or replacement lights are the problem. Interiors containing numerous lamps can expose this cost even when a simple exterior appears acceptable.

Volumetric lighting and fog

Outdoor areas with fog, smoke, god rays or other participating media can be disproportionately expensive. Reduce volumetric quality after path-tracing and lighting adjustments if exterior scenes are the outlier. This preserves more of the scene’s direct and indirect lighting than lowering every setting at once.

Denoising

Leave denoising enabled for normal play. NVIDIA identifies denoising as a critical component of modern path-tracing renderers because it reconstructs a cleaner image from limited samples. Turning it off can expose noise and is primarily a diagnostic step when you are investigating an image-quality issue, not a normal performance preset.

Use the Content tab to find expensive replacements

Large texture, mesh and light replacements can change the cost of a scene. In the Content tab, temporarily turn replacement groups off and compare the same location. This can reveal whether a particular asset category is responsible for a spike.

This test does not return the game to the original raster renderer. The Remix guide states that path tracing remains active when material, mesh or light replacements are disabled. Use the switch as an isolation tool, then restore the replacements you want for normal play.

Resolution, assets and VRAM affect every comparison

Do not compare a preset at one resolution with a GPU at another and draw a hardware conclusion. Hold output resolution, DLSS mode, replacement textures, meshes and lights constant. A higher resolution increases the work that must be reconstructed and displayed, while a large replacement set can alter both VRAM use and scene time. Record VRAM use alongside frame rate so a texture change is not mistaken for a path-tracing improvement.

When comparing GPUs, use the same save, camera route and runtime build. Compare average FPS, 1% lows or equivalent frame-pacing behavior, image stability, ghosting, latency with frame generation, outdoor volumetric performance and dense-interior performance. A card that wins an empty corridor may lose in a foggy exterior or a room full of replacement lights.

Test three scenes instead of trusting one location

No standardized Fallout: New Vegas RTX Remix benchmark establishes a universal preset. Build your own repeatable test sequence:

  1. Outdoor scene: walk through an area with foliage, distant geometry and any fog or volumetric effects.
  2. Dense interior: enter a room with many lights, reflective surfaces or replacement props.
  3. Combat scene: move, aim and fight while checking frame pacing, latency and image artifacts.

Repeat each route after every meaningful change and note whether the GPU is saturated. A stable setting should survive the heaviest of the three scenes, not merely produce a high number while standing still. Keep frame generation off when establishing the baseline, then repeat the route with it enabled so generated frames do not hide a weak underlying rate.

Hardware requirements and compatibility

RTX is the clearest target

A GeForce RTX card is the most straightforward hardware category for this workflow because NVIDIA’s DLSS documentation and RTX Remix feature set are designed around RTX acceleration. The exact model depends on output resolution, replacement assets, path-tracing quality and whether frame generation is used. There is no defensible single model recommendation or universal FPS guarantee from the available evidence.

AMD and Intel claims are build-specific

A current project discussion says the modified runtime supports AMD RX 6000 or newer cards and desktop Intel Arc in addition to NVIDIA. Treat that as a compatibility claim for the referenced community build, not a guarantee for every Fallout: New Vegas Remix release. Check the exact release notes and runtime requirements before assuming a non-NVIDIA card will expose every feature, including upscaling or frame generation.

Hardware question What can be stated safely
Do you need an RTX GPU? RTX is the clearest target for the full DLSS and path-tracing workflow, but a current project discussion also claims AMD RX 6000+ and desktop Intel Arc support.
Is one GPU model guaranteed? No. Requirements vary with resolution, replacement assets, runtime build and enabled features.
Is frame generation guaranteed? No. Availability and behavior depend on the runtime, GPU and feature support.

What to budget for

No verified product listing or price establishes a required purchase for this project. The defensible shopping category is a GeForce RTX graphics card, but choosing a model requires your target resolution, replacement set and desired quality level. Check the specific community release before buying hardware, especially if you are considering AMD or Intel support claims. Do not treat a single creator’s FPS report as a price-to-performance guarantee.

What current performance reports actually show

The Fallout: New Vegas RTX community developer Kim2091 reported, “I get up to 100 FPS. Usually sits around 70 or so! 5080 Mobile, DLSS Performance. Still optimizing though, so it should get even better.” That is an individual configuration report from 2026, not a controlled benchmark. It demonstrates that high frame rates are possible on a particular mobile GPU, resolution and build, but it cannot predict results on another card or scene.

A separate release discussion describes the project as work in progress and says the base game should already be completable. Because the runtime and replacements continue to evolve, a later build may perform differently from the one used for that report. “Completable” also does not mean every area has identical frame pacing or that all optional replacement packs have the same cost.

Do not confuse path tracing with every New Vegas DLSS project

Some projects use DLSS or neural rendering while deliberately leaving Remix path tracing disabled. The fnv-dlss5 repository explicitly says: “No. This release intentionally disables Remix path tracing and presents the original New Vegas raster image to the DLAA and Neural Rendering path.” If your goal is path-traced lighting, verify the installed project and runtime actually enable the Remix path-tracing renderer. A DLSS label alone is not proof that path tracing is active.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Low FPS with the GPU at or near full load

  • Change DLSS from Quality to Balanced, then Performance if necessary.
  • Lower path-tracing quality, followed by lighting quality.
  • Reduce volumetrics if the problem is concentrated outdoors.
  • Use the Content tab to identify an expensive replacement.

Low FPS but the GPU is not fully busy

  • Do not assume a lower DLSS mode will fix it.
  • Check for a CPU, streaming or frame-pacing limit.
  • Compare an interior, exterior and combat scene to find where the limit appears.
  • Test with frame generation disabled so displayed FPS does not hide the underlying rate.

Ghosting, shimmer or unstable fine detail

  • Move from Performance to Balanced or Quality if GPU headroom allows.
  • Check the same foliage, wires and distant geometry while panning the camera.
  • Keep denoising enabled unless you are specifically diagnosing a denoiser issue.

Frame generation feels delayed or produces artifacts

  • Return to the stable base-rate configuration.
  • Confirm that latency is acceptable before re-enabling generated frames.
  • Compare combat and rapid camera movement, not only a stationary view.

Changes disappear after restarting

  • Save the configuration from the Remix overlay.
  • Confirm that rtx.conf is beside the active runtime folder.
  • Make sure you are editing the runtime used by the current game installation rather than a second copy.

The image looks like ordinary New Vegas

  • Check that the installed project is the path-tracing build rather than a DLSS or neural-rendering host that intentionally disables Remix path tracing.
  • Open the Rendering tab and verify that path-tracing controls are present.
  • Confirm that you launched the intended runtime after changing mod folders.

A repeatable tuning recipe

  1. Start the game and press Alt-X.
  2. Set DLSS Super Resolution to Quality and leave frame generation off.
  3. Run the outdoor, interior and combat tests.
  4. If GPU time is too high, switch to Balanced, retest, and then Performance only if required.
  5. Lower path-tracing quality before lighting quality.
  6. Reduce volumetrics when outdoor fog or lighting shafts are the dominant cost.
  7. Use Content-tab toggles to locate unusually heavy replacements.
  8. Keep denoising enabled for the final configuration.
  9. Enable frame generation only after the base rate and latency are acceptable.
  10. Save the result to rtx.conf, and keep a copy before changing runtime versions or replacement packs.

After an update, repeat at least one outdoor, one interior and one combat pass. Runtime changes, replacement packs and display resolution can all move the performance bottleneck, so a previously stable file is a starting point rather than a permanent guarantee.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best RTX Remix settings for smooth Fallout: New Vegas path tracing?

Open the overlay with Alt-X, start DLSS Super Resolution on Quality, keep frame generation off while establishing a stable base rate, then lower path-tracing, lighting and volumetric quality in that order if GPU time is too high. Save the tested values to rtx.conf.

Should I use DLSS Quality, Balanced or Performance?

Use Quality when the base rate has headroom, Balanced when Quality is slightly too slow, and Performance when the GPU is saturated and you need the largest gain. Check foliage, wires, signage and moving characters for reconstruction artifacts after each change.

Should frame generation be enabled first?

No. Frame generation adds displayed frames but does not remove the cost of rendering the underlying frames. Tune DLSS and image quality first, test latency and pacing, and enable generation only when the base rate is consistent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need an RTX GPU?

A GeForce RTX card is the clearest target for DLSS and full path tracing. A current project discussion also claims support for AMD RX 6000-or-newer cards and desktop Intel Arc, but compatibility is build-specific and must be checked against the exact release.

How do I know whether a DLSS mod is actually path tracing?

Do not rely on the DLSS label. The fnv-dlss5 project explicitly disables Remix path tracing and uses the original raster image with DLAA and Neural Rendering. Verify that your installed runtime exposes and enables Remix path-tracing controls.

Why does disabling replacement assets not restore the original renderer?

The Content-tab switch only removes selected material, mesh or light replacements. The Remix guide says path tracing remains active, so use the switch to isolate an expensive asset group rather than as a raster fallback.

What FPS should I expect?

There is no repeatable universal benchmark. Kim2091 reported up to 100 FPS and usually about 70 FPS on a 5080 Mobile using DLSS Performance, but that is one 2026 configuration and is not a promise for another GPU, resolution, scene or build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where are my Remix settings saved?

Save them from the overlay to rtx.conf beside the active runtime folder. If changes vanish, check that you are editing the runtime used by the current installation and repeat the save after changing builds or replacement packs.

What should I compare when testing two GPUs or presets?

Use the same resolution, scene, camera route, runtime and replacement set. Compare base FPS, 1% lows or frame pacing, image stability and ghosting, frame-generation latency, volumetric and interior performance, VRAM use and compatibility.

The Bottom Line

Start with Alt-X, DLSS Quality and frame generation off. Move to Balanced or Performance only when the GPU is limiting you, then lower path-tracing, lighting and volumetric quality in stages. Keep denoising on, verify that your runtime truly enables path tracing, test an outdoor area, interior and combat scene, and save the result to rtx.conf. Hardware support and FPS remain specific to the build, replacement set and GPU.
