The right router for a Mac depends first on the Mac’s Wi‑Fi capability, then on your broadband speed, home layout and need for 6 GHz or advanced network controls. For most buyers, start by checking the exact Mac model rather than paying extra for Wi‑Fi 7 features it cannot use. The eero 7, eero Pro 7 and ASUS RT-BE96U are useful candidates for different needs, not universal winners: the available specifications do not establish a comparable price or head-to-head performance winner.

Check your Mac’s Wi‑Fi before choosing a router

Apple’s current support guidance says MacBook Pro models introduced in 2023 or later, MacBook Air models introduced in 2024 or later, and iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio and Mac Pro models introduced in 2023 or later support Wi‑Fi 6E or later. If your Mac falls outside those groups, check the exact model’s technical specifications before buying a router for 6 GHz. Apple also notes that 6 GHz availability depends on region. Apple’s Wi‑Fi 6E and Wi‑Fi 7 guidance was published August 28, 2026.

A Wi‑Fi 7 router remains compatible with older Wi‑Fi clients, but it does not upgrade their radios. eero says Wi‑Fi 6 and earlier devices connect using their existing standards and do not gain Wi‑Fi 7 features such as Multi-Link Operation (MLO). That means a newer router may still be useful for other devices or wired connections, but the Mac’s own capabilities remain the limit for Mac-to-router Wi‑Fi features.

Use one network name across Wi‑Fi bands

For Apple devices, keep 2.4, 5 and 6 GHz under one network name (SSID) where the router allows it. Apple’s recommendation is: “For best performance with Apple devices, the Wi-Fi router providing the network should use a single network name (SSID) across all of its Wi-Fi bands: the 2.4 GHz band, the 5 GHz band and the 6 GHz band.” Different names can trigger a limited-compatibility prompt and may lead a device to use 5 GHz without some Wi‑Fi 6E/7 benefits.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If a Mac has trouble on a Wi‑Fi 6E network, Apple documents a per-network option to turn off Wi‑Fi 6E mode. This is a troubleshooting setting, not a reason to split bands by default.

Choose the eero 7 if 6 GHz is not a requirement

Although it is branded Wi‑Fi 7, eero 7 is dual-band, with 2.4 and 5 GHz radios; it does not include 6 GHz. It can be a candidate if you want to consider Wi‑Fi 7 without needing that band. Its two 2.5GbE ports may suit broadband or wired devices that benefit from connections faster than 1GbE, subject to the rest of the network supporting those speeds.

Choose the eero Pro 7 if you want tri-band Wi‑Fi 7

The Pro 7 adds 6 GHz and has two 5GbE ports. It is the more relevant eero option when a compatible Mac, regional availability and network needs make 6 GHz useful, or when faster wired links matter. App-led setup is a fit for people who prefer straightforward management; those who want extensive manual controls should compare its management approach with other routers before buying.

Consider the ASUS RT-BE96U for feature-led configuration

ASUS lists VPN options and USB features that include HFS+ storage and Time Machine. Those may matter to someone who wants router-level network controls or wants to investigate USB storage features. The listing alone does not establish backup reliability, performance or whether a particular Mac backup arrangement will work as intended, so verify the details that matter for your setup.

Match the router to broadband, wired devices and home layout

Check port speed against your service

Compare the router’s WAN port and your modem or gateway with the speed tier you pay for. A 2.5GbE or 5GbE port can prevent a 1GbE link from constraining a faster service, but it will not make an internet plan faster than the provider delivers. Wired computers, storage and switches also need compatible ports and cabling to benefit from multi-gigabit connections.

Decide whether one router can cover the layout

Coverage claims are estimates; walls, floors, interference and router placement change results. If a single router leaves rooms with weak signal or dead zones, compare a mesh system or additional access points rather than choosing solely by a larger advertised coverage figure. Place the main router centrally and in the open when practical, not inside a cabinet or at the far edge of the home.

Separate Wi‑Fi 7 branding from the features you need

Wi‑Fi 7 branding alone does not establish that a router has 6 GHz or that a Mac can use MLO. Confirm the bands on the exact product and the capabilities of the exact Mac. A 2026 Tom’s Guide roundup reported 2.62 Gbps at 15 feet for the ASUS ZenWiFi BQ16 Pro in that model’s test; that is a specific result under stated test conditions, not a typical speed promise for Wi‑Fi 7 routers or a Mac-specific result. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 router roundup also notes that some Wi‑Fi 7 routers omit 6 GHz.

A practical buying checklist

  1. Identify the Mac model. Check Apple’s Wi‑Fi support guidance and the technical specifications for your exact generation, especially if you are buying for 6 GHz.
  2. Set the actual requirement. Decide whether you need 6 GHz, faster wired ports, app-based simplicity, USB features or advanced configuration. Avoid paying for a feature your devices and network will not use.
  3. Compare bands and ports on the exact model. Confirm whether it is dual- or tri-band, which bands it offers, and the WAN/LAN port speeds. Do not infer 6 GHz from Wi‑Fi 7 branding.
  4. Assess coverage honestly. Consider floor plan, walls and dead zones. If one router is unlikely to reach the whole home, compare mesh or access-point options.
  5. Verify purchase details. Check the exact regional SKU, current price and stock, firmware and support policy; these can vary and are not established by the product specifications cited here.
  6. Configure a shared SSID. Use one network name across bands for Apple devices where possible, following Apple’s recommendation.
