There is no single best router for every small business. Choose one by matching its WAN capacity, failover needs, VPN capabilities, network-segmentation controls, management model and Wi-Fi requirements to the way your office works. One documented example is TP-Link’s Omada ER7206 V2, a wired VPN gateway—not an all-in-one Wi-Fi router.
What to check before choosing a business router
Internet speed and WAN connections
Start with the speed of your internet service and the router’s WAN port speeds. If you have, or plan to add, more than one internet connection, check how many WAN links the router can use and whether its documented capabilities meet your failover or load-balancing requirements. Port speed alone does not establish real-world routing throughput.
VPN requirements
List who needs VPN access and why: remote employees connecting to the office, links between locations, or both. Verify that the router supports the specific VPN protocols your setup requires, as well as suitable user or site capacity. Encrypted VPN throughput matters too; a protocol appearing in a feature list does not establish how much traffic the router can handle under encryption.
Network separation and security controls
Decide whether staff, guests, voice systems and connected devices need separate network segments. Check that the router supports the VLAN design you intend to use and provides firewall controls that fit your policies. A product’s feature list is not a substitute for confirming that the controls support your actual network configuration.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Management, support and ownership cost
Determine whether you want local configuration or centralized management and monitoring. Before buying, establish what support and software updates are available, and whether management depends on a subscription or controller infrastructure. The evidence available here does not establish current pricing, licensing costs or support terms, so verify those details for the specific model, region and revision.
Wi-Fi coverage
Do not assume a business gateway includes wireless radios. If the router is wired equipment, plan access points separately and check compatibility with the router and its management system. Wireless coverage also depends on the office layout and access-point placement, not just the gateway.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
A documented example: TP-Link Omada ER7206 V2
TP-Link’s US product page describes the ER7206 V2 as an Omada Gigabit VPN Router and lists support for centralized cloud management and monitoring through Omada SDN. The listed interfaces are one gigabit SFP WAN/LAN port, one gigabit RJ45 WAN port and four gigabit RJ45 WAN/LAN ports; TP-Link says the unit can support up to five WAN ports. The page also lists WireGuard, OpenVPN, IPsec, SSL, GRE, PPTP and L2TP VPN variants, along with VLAN support, firewall policies, DoS defense and IP/MAC/URL filtering. See TP-Link’s ER7206 V2 product page.

This example may be worth considering if those listed functions match your requirements, but the product page does not establish that it is the best router for businesses generally, nor does it provide independent comparative test results. It presents the ER7206 V2 as a wired gateway, not an all-in-one Wi-Fi router. Businesses that need wireless coverage should plan for separate access points and confirm compatibility for their region and hardware revision.

How to narrow the choice
- Write down your internet requirements. Note your service speed, the WAN port speed you need, and whether you require one connection or multiple links.
- Map your VPN use. Specify remote-access users, site-to-site connections, required protocols, capacity and expected encrypted throughput.
- Define network segments. Identify which traffic needs separation and verify that the router’s VLAN and firewall controls can implement the intended design.
- Choose a management approach. Decide whether local administration is sufficient or centralized monitoring is necessary; check any controller, subscription or support requirements.
- Plan wireless separately when needed. Confirm whether the router provides Wi-Fi. If it does not, select compatible access points and plan coverage for the premises.
- Verify the exact purchase. Check the regional product page and hardware revision for current specifications, software support, price, stock and licensing before ordering.
