Good alternatives to TP-Link include the ASUS RT-BE86U for a configurable standalone router, eero 7 for app-managed Wi-Fi 7, Google Nest Wifi Pro for Wi-Fi 6E mesh, NETGEAR Orbi or Nighthawk mesh for different backhaul designs, and the Ubiquiti UniFi Dream Router 7 for a more feature-rich managed gateway. The right choice depends less on a headline Wi-Fi generation than on whether you need one router or multiple nodes, which bands your devices support, your wired-port needs, and how much network management you want.
Choose a router or mesh system first
A standalone router is one central access point. It is a sensible starting point when a well-placed unit can reach the rooms where you use Wi-Fi. A mesh system uses multiple units to extend coverage across a larger or more difficult layout. Walls, floors, building materials, and node placement all affect the result, so manufacturer coverage estimates should not be treated as guarantees for an individual home.

Mesh systems also differ in how they connect their units. Some NETGEAR Orbi systems use dedicated wireless backhaul, while Nighthawk mesh systems trade away that dedicated backhaul in favor of lower entry cost, according to NETGEAR’s family-level description. Verify the design of the exact model you are considering; the distinction does not describe every model in either family.

| Option | Best fit | Key details and trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| ASUS RT-BE86U | A conventional standalone router for someone who wants configuration options and security or VPN features. | ASUS lists AiProtection Pro capabilities and VPN client and server options in its specifications. A vendor feature list is not an independent security audit or a comparative performance test. |
| eero 7 | An app-managed Wi-Fi 7 router that can also extend an eero network. | eero describes it as dual-band Wi-Fi 7, with two 2.5 GbE ports and manufacturer-estimated coverage of up to 2,000 sq. ft. per unit. Setup and network management use the eero app. The coverage figure is an estimate, not a promise for a particular floor plan. |
| Google Nest Wifi Pro | A Google Home-centered Wi-Fi 6E mesh system for homes where several nodes may help. | Google estimates coverage of up to 2,200 sq. ft. per router, 4,400 sq. ft. for a two-pack, and 6,600 sq. ft. for a three-pack. Actual signal reach depends on home size, materials, and layout. Additional Nest Wifi Pro routers can act as points, but Nest Wifi Pro cannot mesh with earlier Nest Wifi or Google Wifi units. |
| NETGEAR Orbi or Nighthawk mesh | A mesh-family choice for buyers comparing backhaul design and product tier model by model. | NETGEAR describes Orbi Wi-Fi 7 as offering 6 GHz and Orbi Wi-Fi 6E as a lower-priced 6 GHz option. Its Nighthawk mesh systems do not include dedicated wireless backhaul, a family-level trade-off associated with lower entry cost. Check the exact model’s bands, ports, and backhaul. |
| Ubiquiti UniFi Dream Router 7 | A gateway/router for buyers who want UniFi management and more network controls. | Ubiquiti lists Wi-Fi 7, VLAN and firewall capabilities, a 10G SFP+ WAN option, a 2.5 GbE RJ45 WAN option, LAN ports, and a 1,750 sq. ft. coverage estimate. The coverage figure is the manufacturer’s estimate, not independent testing. Its broader gateway functions and management model may be more than a household wants from a basic router. |
What matters when comparing the shortlist
Wi-Fi generation and bands
Wi-Fi 6E adds access to the 6 GHz band for compatible devices. Nest Wifi Pro is Wi-Fi 6E; eero 7 is dual-band Wi-Fi 7 and does not list 6 GHz. A newer standard does not make older clients unusable: eero says older Wi-Fi devices connect using their existing standards, and Google says non-Wi-Fi 6E devices can connect to Nest Wifi Pro but cannot use 6 GHz.

Ports and broadband speed
Check the exact model’s WAN and LAN port speeds and count against your internet plan and wired equipment. eero 7 has two 2.5 GbE ports. UniFi Dream Router 7 lists a 10G SFP+ WAN option and a 2.5 GbE RJ45 WAN option, as well as LAN ports. A fast wireless headline alone does not tell you whether the router has the wired connections your setup needs.
Setup and control
eero setup and management use its Android or iOS app. Nest Wifi Pro requires Google Home and a Google Account, alongside a modem, active internet connection, Ethernet, and a compatible phone. UniFi Dream Router 7 offers more network controls and gateway functions; choose that approach only if you want to manage them rather than simply set up an app-first home network.

Expansion and node compatibility
Do not assume mesh units from different generations or product families can be combined. Google says Nest Wifi Pro cannot join a mesh with earlier Nest Wifi or Google Wifi units. eero documents backward compatibility within its own product family. Confirm compatibility for the specific units before planning to reuse existing nodes.
How to decide which alternative fits
- Write down your connection and equipment needs. Note your internet plan speed, whether your ISP supplied a modem/router gateway, how many wired devices you have, and the speed and number of Ethernet ports they need.
- Map where coverage is weak. Consider the floor plan, walls and floors between the router and problem rooms, and whether a central router location is practical. If one access point is unlikely to cover the areas you use, compare mesh systems rather than relying on a coverage estimate alone.
- Check client devices and bands. List the Wi-Fi standards supported by your phones, computers, and smart-home devices. A 6 GHz-capable router offers that band only to compatible clients; older devices can still connect using supported standards.
- Pick the management style. Choose an app-first system if guided setup and straightforward management suit the household. Consider a more configurable router or gateway if you specifically want its additional controls and will use them.
- Verify the exact model and package. Confirm the port layout, mesh/backhaul design, app and account requirements, and whether a listing is for one unit or a multi-pack. Prices, product availability, and lineups vary by region and change over time.
What the available specifications cannot establish
The listed specifications and manufacturer coverage estimates do not establish which alternative is categorically faster, safer, more reliable, or better than TP-Link. They also do not provide a comparable independent head-to-head test or current price comparison across these models. Treat the shortlist as a way to match product type and features to your home, not as a tested ranking.
