Hellish Quart is the strongest documented alternative if what you love about Poly Fighter is solo one-on-one combat. It offers physics-driven sword duels, motion-captured historical fencing and a single-player arcade mode with a boss fight. It is not, however, a roguelike clone: the available descriptions do not establish Poly Fighter-style runs, opponent-move drafting or a changing player moveset.
That distinction matters. Poly Fighter combines 1v1 fighting with roguelike progression: victories unlock moves taken from defeated rivals, and you can swap or upgrade those moves to build styles such as zoner, grappler or rushdown. This guide therefore separates close structural matches from games that merely share a fighting-game feel. It is a curated comparison based on verified store and press descriptions, not a personally tested ranking.
What makes Poly Fighter different?
Many games contain fighting, arenas or procedural progression. Far fewer combine all three of Poly Fighter’s defining elements:

- Run-based progression: you advance through escalating leagues instead of simply selecting a permanent character and playing disconnected matches.
- Moveset acquisition: defeated rivals teach you moves, and those moves can become part of your own build.
- Build decisions: swapping or upgrading moves lets a run lean toward a zoner, grappler, rushdown or another self-defined style.
- Flexible inputs: the Steam listing says the game supports simple inputs as well as motion inputs.
Steam describes Poly Fighter as “a single-player roguelike fighting game.” Its current listing gives an Early Access release date of October 13, 2026, so the game is in development at the time covered by this article. Early Access features, balance, map flow and rewards can change; check the current Steam page before buying or comparing a new update.

How to judge a game like Poly Fighter
Use the following questions before treating another title as a genuine alternative:
Is the combat really one-on-one?
A traditional duel, a physics-based weapon fight and a platform fighter can all be called fighting games, but they demand different spacing, timing and defensive habits. A group-focused action roguelike may have excellent combat while offering none of the matchup structure that makes a 1v1 game feel like Poly Fighter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDoes a solo run change your fighter?
Poly Fighter’s most distinctive decision is not simply choosing an opponent. It is deciding which of that opponent’s techniques belong in your own kit. A game with permanent upgrades, random weapons or stronger statistics may be roguelike, but it is a looser match if your actual moves remain fixed.
What persists between encounters?
Look for the exact progression object: moves, upgrades, equipment, resources, a map route or only a score. The closer a game comes to altering the actions available to your character during a run, the closer it is to Poly Fighter’s structure.
How demanding are the controls?
Poly Fighter advertises both simple and motion inputs. That suggests an attempt to serve players who want straightforward commands as well as those who enjoy traditional fighting-game execution. A recommendation should state whether it relies on directional motion, physics and timing, or a more conventional button-and-frame system.

Is the comparison current?
Early Access games can change rapidly. Confirm the release state, available modes and progression rules on the relevant store page immediately before publication or purchase. A demo announcement or developer update should not be presented as a guaranteed feature of a later build.

Why it belongs on this list
Hellish Quart is the clearest documented recommendation for readers whose favorite part of Poly Fighter is the intensity of a solo 1v1 duel. Its official press material describes one-on-one sword fighting, physics-driven blade interactions and motion-captured historical fencing techniques. The Steam listing identifies a single-player arcade mode with a boss fight, plus local multiplayer modes.
That gives it a meaningful overlap with Poly Fighter’s combat format: you face an individual rival, read an opponent’s attack, manage distance and win through timing rather than clearing a group of enemies. The sword focus also makes each exchange legible. A strike, parry or positional mistake has a direct consequence instead of disappearing into crowd effects.
Where it differs
The sources available for Hellish Quart do not establish a roguelike run structure, escalating league route or system for learning and drafting an opponent’s moves. They also do not establish that your moveset changes from fight to fight. It should therefore be treated as a combat-style alternative, not as a mechanical clone of Poly Fighter.
If your priority is “I want to duel a dangerous opponent alone,” Hellish Quart is a sensible direction. If your priority is “I want every victory to reshape the tools I can use in the next fight,” the available evidence does not show that Hellish Quart provides the same experience.

Who should choose it?
- Choose it for sword-duel feel: the defining appeal is physics-driven blade contact and historical fencing motion capture.
- Choose it for solo arcade play: the Steam description specifically identifies a single-player arcade mode and boss fight.
- Choose it for local competition: local multiplayer is listed, although that is a different use case from Poly Fighter’s solo run loop.
- Do not choose it expecting move theft: the available descriptions do not document opponent-move acquisition or run-based build construction.

Which game fits your reason for liking Poly Fighter?
You want the changing-build loop
Poly Fighter remains the only game in this comparison with documented move acquisition from defeated opponents and move swapping or upgrading during progression. Keep it at the top of your list, while remembering that its Early Access design can be revised.

You want a tense 1v1 fight more than a roguelike
Hellish Quart is the better fit among the available options. Its sword physics and historical fencing focus address the duel itself, and its single-player arcade mode provides a solo route. You give up the documented build-crafting loop, but gain a more specific weapon-dueling identity.
You want both, without assuming an exact match
Play Poly Fighter for run-to-run experimentation and keep Hellish Quart in mind for a separate sword-duel experience. They satisfy different halves of the appeal. Calling Hellish Quart a roguelike would overstate what the cited materials support.
You primarily play with a controller
Poly Fighter’s Steam listing includes controller support, making a PC game controller an optional input choice rather than a stated requirement. No particular controller model is established as necessary. For Hellish Quart, verify the current control and compatibility information on its live store page before purchase; the cited descriptions do not establish a specific controller requirement.

Moves are the meaningful reward
In a conventional fighter, defeating an opponent usually proves that your existing character and strategy worked. Poly Fighter changes the question after a win: which part of that opponent’s toolkit should become yours? That creates a direct connection between combat performance and future options.
A move that helps a zoner maintain distance may be valuable in one route and awkward in another. A grappling tool can change how you approach a close-range rival, while a rushdown option can reward players who prefer to stay on top of an opponent. The important point is not that one archetype is permanently best; it is that the run lets you assemble a style instead of locking every decision before the first match.
Swapping and upgrading create trade-offs
The listing describes both swapping and upgrading moves. Swapping implies opportunity cost: adding one action may mean removing another. Upgrading implies a second decision about investment, not merely collection. The result is a fighting-game version of route planning, where the strongest reward is not automatically the most useful reward for your current build.

Runs can change the matchup problem
Developer news has referred to rivals and constructed movesets differing across runs. That matters because you cannot assume that one solved sequence will always produce the same answers. Treat update notes and demo descriptions as evidence of an evolving design, however, rather than as a promise that every rival, map or reward behaves identically in the current Early Access build.

Input and learning curve
Simple inputs
Simple inputs lower the barrier to experimenting with newly acquired moves. Players can concentrate on spacing, defense and choosing a build without first mastering a long sequence of motion commands. This is especially useful when a run continually introduces unfamiliar techniques.
Motion inputs
Motion inputs offer a more execution-focused route for players who enjoy traditional fighting-game command practice. Because Poly Fighter lists both approaches, check its current control documentation or in-game settings to understand which moves support which input method. Early Access rebinding and command details can change.
Physics-driven fencing is a different skill
Hellish Quart’s documented emphasis is not the same as Poly Fighter’s simple-or-motion-input model. Its identity comes from sword interaction governed by physics and fencing movement captured from historical techniques. Expect the central learning task to be reading blade distance and timing rather than building a custom set of stolen techniques.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Early Access and update-status checklist
Because Poly Fighter is listed as Early Access, use this checklist before relying on a guide, review or recommendation:
- Open the current Steam listing and confirm that the game is still marked Early Access.
- Check the visible feature description for the present version, rather than assuming every demo or community-news feature remains unchanged.
- Read the latest developer update for changes to map flow, leagues, rewards, rivals or move construction.
- Confirm controller support and input options in the current build if those features affect your purchase decision.
- Separate announced plans from playable features. A revised reward structure described in a demo update is not automatically a permanent rule.
This approach prevents a common comparison error: treating a snapshot of an evolving game as if it were a final specification.

What the wider context says about the appeal
A December 12, 2025 Creative Bloq feature discusses Poly Fighter’s three-act progression, stealing or replacing opponents’ moves and visual inspiration from early 3D fighters. In that article, creative director Osama Dorias is quoted saying, “There are people who are just hungry for different single-player fighting game experiences, and we’ve got validation on that.” The statement is the developer’s view as reported by that publication; it is not a player-count, sales or market-size statistic.
No named statistic with a clear original publisher and year was identified that would improve this comparison. There is therefore no responsible basis here for inventing player counts, review averages, sales figures or genre-market claims.
Why there are not more entries here
The phrase “games like Poly Fighter” can cover several unrelated categories: action roguelikes with groups of enemies, arena brawlers, platform fighters and traditional competitive fighters. Including them simply because they contain combat would make the list longer but less useful. The available material establishes Hellish Quart as a defensible adjacent recommendation and does not establish additional titles as close structural matches.
That narrower list is intentional. A game should not be called a Poly Fighter alternative unless its overlap is explained: combat format, solo structure, progression object, moveset flexibility and current availability. Where those facts are not established, the honest answer is to leave the title out rather than imply a similarity that the evidence cannot support.
A practical decision framework
- Start with your non-negotiable. If it is changing moves and run construction, prioritize Poly Fighter. If it is a sword duel, consider Hellish Quart.
- Decide whether solo play is essential. Poly Fighter is explicitly single-player; Hellish Quart’s Steam listing includes a single-player arcade mode as well as local multiplayer.
- Choose your combat model. Poly Fighter centers on a configurable fighter in 1v1 matches. Hellish Quart centers on physics-driven blades and historical fencing.
- Check the live status. Poly Fighter’s Early Access state means features can move. Confirm current information immediately before purchase.
- Match the learning task to your preference. Poly Fighter offers simple or motion inputs; Hellish Quart’s documented challenge is interpreting physical sword interactions.
Bottom line
Poly Fighter is unusual because its roguelike progression changes the fighter, not merely the number beside a health bar. You battle through leagues, learn moves from defeated opponents and assemble a run-specific style. Hellish Quart is the best documented adjacent choice for the one-on-one combat itself, with sword physics, historical fencing techniques and a solo arcade mode, but it should not be presented as a roguelike substitute without evidence of run-based move drafting. Choose between them based on whether your favorite part of Poly Fighter is the evolving moveset or the duel.
