The best robot vacuum for rugs and hardwood is one that detects carpet, raises suction on it, and has a clearly documented plan for keeping rugs dry when mopping. For low-pile rugs and hard floors, a well-tuned combo robot can vacuum and mop on a schedule. Thick or high-pile rugs require closer inspection: check the model’s stated pile limit, whether its mop lifts or comes off, and independent tests on the same type of carpet. No single model is a universal winner because hair pickup, rug height, furniture clearance, mopping behavior, dock maintenance and price all change the decision.

What a mixed-floor robot vacuum must do

Rugs and hardwood create two different cleaning problems. Hard floors expose fine dust, crumbs and hair, while rugs hold debris in fibers and can resist a robot’s brush. A suitable robot changes its behavior when it crosses from one surface to the other instead of using one fixed setting everywhere.

  • Recognize carpet or rug contact. A documented carpet sensor or resistance-based detection is more useful than a vague “multi-surface” label.
  • Increase agitation or suction on rugs. The machine should raise suction, change brush behavior or apply a carpet-specific mode without requiring you to remember every rug.
  • Protect rugs during wet cleaning. A combo robot must lift its mop, remove the pads at the dock, avoid carpet in mop mode, or let you create a reliable vacuum-only run.
  • Clear your furniture and thresholds. Height, wheel clearance and transition capability determine whether the robot reaches the places you actually want cleaned.
  • Offer a maintenance routine you will follow. Self-emptying, mop washing and drying can save time, but the dock needs floor space, water handling and periodic cleaning.

Manufacturer descriptions establish what a feature is designed to do; independent tests show how well a particular model performs with particular debris on particular surfaces. Treat those as different types of evidence.

Carpet boost: useful, but not a universal performance guarantee

Carpet boost is intended to increase suction when the robot senses a rug and return to a lower setting on hard flooring. Roborock Support Center defines its feature this way: “Carpet boost mode means device will auto increase suction strength to max when it is on carpet to vacuum stuff better.” The company also explains that the change is based on carpet resistance. That describes Roborock’s implementation, not the behavior of every robot vacuum.

Look for three details in a model’s manual or support pages:

  1. Trigger: Is the change automatic, or must you enable a carpet mode in the app?
  2. Action: Does the robot only increase suction, or does it also alter brush speed and travel pattern?
  3. Scope: Does the boost work in every cleaning mode, or only in a named intelligent or carpet-cleaning mode?

Dreame’s guidance for the L10s Pro Ultra, for example, ties its carpet boost behavior to a specified intelligent carpet-cleaning mode. A feature that works only in one mode can be missed if you normally run a generic “vacuum and mop” cycle.

How to keep rugs dry when the robot mops

“Vacuum and mop” does not tell you what happens at a rug. A robot may use one of four approaches:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Rug strategy What happens What to verify
Mop-pad lift The pad assembly raises above the rug while the robot continues traveling. Lift height and the pile height the manufacturer says it can clear without contact.
Pad removal at the dock The dock removes or stores the pads before a carpet run. Whether removal is automatic, whether pads are reattached for the next area, and whether the dock has room to operate.
Carpet avoidance The robot detects carpet and avoids it in combo or mop mode. Whether detection works on dark, patterned or fringed rugs and whether the robot still vacuums them in a separate run.
Separate cleaning runs You vacuum rugs first or create no-mop zones, then mop only hard floors. App support for room, zone or no-mop controls and the extra scheduling you are willing to manage.

iRobot says the Roomba Plus 405 Combo detects rugs, lifts its mop pad and avoids carpets in combo and mop modes. TP-Link says the Tapo RV50 Pro Omni can lift and remove its mop pads for high-pile carpets. Those are manufacturer claims; confirm that the exact regional model and firmware provide the behavior you need.

Dreame gives a more restrictive warning for the L10s Pro Ultra: its mop lifts 10.5 mm, and the company advises avoiding medium- and high-pile carpets over 3 mm in a specified intelligent carpet-cleaning mode to help prevent wetting. That 3 mm caution belongs to that model and mode; it is not a general limit for all robot vacuums. If your rugs exceed the stated clearance, use a no-mop zone or a vacuum-only run.

Shortlist: models worth investigating

The models below illustrate different trade-offs rather than a single ranking. Features in the “stated by maker” column are not independent performance results.

Model What is documented Mixed-floor strengths Limits and checks
Roomba Plus 405 Combo iRobot lists carpet detection, Carpet Boost, mop-pad lifting and four cleaning modes. Clear manufacturer-described plan for switching between rugs and hard floors; useful if you want an integrated vacuum-and-mop workflow. Independent pickup results were not established here. Confirm pad-lift behavior on your rug pile and check current regional availability.
Tapo RV50 Pro Omni TP-Link lists carpet detection and suction adjustment, and says the robot lifts and removes mop pads for high-pile carpet. Pad removal can be safer than relying solely on a small lift when rugs are thick. Verify the exact regional model, dock configuration and independent tests before assuming it handles every high-pile rug.
DreameBot L10s Pro Ultra Dreame describes a floating rubber brush, a 10.5 mm mop lift and several cleaning modes. Floating brush design and explicit mode choices can help on mixed surfaces. Dreame advises avoiding medium- and high-pile carpets over 3 mm in its specified intelligent carpet-cleaning mode. Plan vacuum-only operation for taller rugs.
Roborock QV 35S Tom’s Guide published surface-specific pickup tests. Strong results on the stated hardwood tests make it a useful hard-floor reference point. Results dropped on low- and high-pile carpet, especially for hair and flax seeds. Do not treat its hardwood result as proof it suits thick rugs.
Roborock Saros 20 TechRadar’s 2026 guide lists 35,000 Pa maximum suction and a 3.14-inch (7.98 cm) robot height, and reports reviewer tests on hard floors and mid-pile carpet. Low profile may help it reach under furniture; the reviewer reported good performance across the tested floor types. 35,000 Pa is a manufacturer/model specification, not a comparable cleaning benchmark. TechRadar notes sticky messes may still need manual follow-up.

Use the table to create a shortlist, then match each candidate to your rug height, pet hair load, furniture clearance and preferred mop routine. Current street prices, stock, warranty terms and included accessories vary by country and date, so verify them immediately before buying.

What independent tests reveal about floor-specific performance

Tom’s Guide’s QV 35S review demonstrates why an overall score can hide an important trade-off. In the stated test setup, the robot collected 92% of 5 g of hair, 94.5% of 20 g of puffed rice cereal and 98% of 20 g of flax seeds from hardwood. Hair pickup fell to 60% on low-pile carpet. On high-pile carpet, the reported results were 40% for hair, 72.5% for cereal and 38.5% for flax seeds.

QV 35S test surface Hair Puffed rice cereal Flax seeds
Hardwood 92% of 5 g 94.5% of 20 g 98% of 20 g
Low-pile carpet 60% (test quantity not stated in the cited summary) Not stated Not stated
High-pile carpet 40% (test quantity not stated in the cited summary) 72.5% of 20 g 38.5% of 20 g

These are model-specific reviewer measurements, not market-wide benchmarks. They show why you should seek tests that resemble your own flooring and debris. A household with long pet hair on thick rugs should weigh the high-pile hair result more heavily than a strong hardwood cereal score.

TechRadar’s 2026 guide reports a reviewer test of the Saros 20 on hard flooring and mid-pile carpet, with favorable performance on both in that review. The same guide notes that sticky messes can require manual follow-up. That combination—good dry pickup but imperfect handling of wet or adhesive debris—is typical of a decision that cannot be reduced to suction numbers alone.

How to compare candidates for your home

1. Match the robot to rug pile

Separate your rugs into low, medium and high pile, and note shag, tassels, loose edges and thick binding. A robot that succeeds on a flat low-pile runner may stall, drag a mop or leave embedded hair on a deep rug. Give priority to tests on the same pile category, then read the manual for explicit height restrictions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Check carpet detection and boost behavior

Prefer documentation that explains the sensor trigger and the mode in which boost operates. If the feature is app-controlled, make sure it can be enabled for vacuum-only cleaning without forcing a wet cycle. Look for an option to set stronger suction on carpet while keeping a quieter setting on hardwood.

3. Choose a mop policy before choosing a combo dock

If most of your floor is hardwood with a few rugs, automatic pad lifting or removal may be convenient. If rugs are numerous or thick, separate vacuum and mop runs are often easier to control. A robot that cannot keep its wet pads away from your tallest rug is a poor fit even if its hard-floor mopping is excellent.

4. Measure furniture and transitions

Measure the lowest clearance under sofas, beds and cabinets, then compare it with the robot’s complete height, including any raised sensor turret. TechRadar lists the Saros 20 at 3.14 inches (7.98 cm), a useful example of why published dimensions matter. Also measure door saddles and rug-to-floor transitions; a robot that cannot climb the edge will leave a clean-looking boundary around an otherwise dirty rug.

5. Evaluate dock maintenance and space

Basic docks charge the robot and may collect dust. More automated docks can empty debris, wash and dry mop pads, and manage clean and dirty water. Those functions reduce daily handling but add height, depth, noise during service cycles and consumables. Measure the dock location with the robot’s approach path clear, and decide whether you are willing to clean filters, brushes, sensors and wash trays regularly.

  • POWERFUL CLEANING YOU CAN SEE—AND FEEL. The Roomba 105X devours dirt with 70X more power‑lifting suction* to pull embedded dust, crumbs, and pet hair from carpets and hard floors. .*Compared to Roomba 600 series robots.
  • 3‑STAGE CLEANING SYSTEM. Combines intense suction, a Multi‑Surface brush, and an Edge‑Sweeping brush to leave floors truly barefoot‑clean—not just surface tidy.
  • SMART LIDAR MAPPING = NO MISSED ROOMS. ClearView LiDAR maps your home quickly and cleans in neat, efficient rows, delivering consistent coverage instead of random paths.
  • CONFIDENT CLEANING, DAY OR NIGHT. Avoids furniture, cords, and everyday obstacles—even in low light—so cleaning continues smoothly without getting stuck.
  • CUSTOM ROOM‑BY‑ROOM CLEANING. Schedule cleans, target high‑traffic areas, adjust suction, and add extra passes where messes build up.

6. Treat noise and price as household constraints

No comparable noise measurements were established for the models in this guide, so do not infer quietness from a suction specification. Check whether the app offers quiet hours and whether the dock’s emptying or drying cycle can be scheduled when people are away. Compare the total ownership cost—robot, dock, bags, filters, brushes, mop pads and cleaning solution—rather than a headline sale price. Regional prices and availability change, so confirm them at checkout.

A practical buying and setup procedure

  1. Map your surfaces. Write down each room’s hard flooring, rug pile, pet-hair concentration and any area where wet cleaning is forbidden.
  2. Measure obstacles. Record the lowest furniture clearance, threshold heights and the width of narrow passages. Include the dock footprint and the space needed to open its tanks or dust bag compartment.
  3. Read the model’s carpet and mop instructions. Identify the exact mode that activates carpet boost, the maximum stated pile or lift height, and whether pads lift, detach or are avoided.
  4. Configure rug protection. In the app, create no-mop zones or room-specific vacuum schedules where supported. If the model removes pads at the dock, confirm that the dock is on a level surface and has unobstructed access.
  5. Run an initial map without wet cleaning. Let the robot learn the layout with the floor dry. Check that it recognizes every rug, crosses transitions and does not attempt to wedge under furniture.
  6. Test one representative rug. Start with a short vacuum-only run. Inspect the rug edge, corners, brush and dustbin for hair or debris left behind. Then test the chosen mop policy on an area where a small mistake will not damage flooring.
  7. Set schedules by surface need. Frequent vacuuming is useful for pet hair; mopping can be less frequent and limited to hardwood rooms. Use stronger carpet settings when occupants are away if the robot becomes louder.
  8. Recheck after firmware or map changes. A new map, moved furniture or changed rug can alter navigation. Confirm that no-mop zones and room boundaries still align with the physical floor.

Model-specific decision guide

Choose the Roomba Plus 405 Combo when…

You want a manufacturer-described combination of carpet detection, Carpet Boost, mop-pad lifting and multiple cleaning modes, and your rugs are within the documented lift capability. Its suitability for heavy hair or thick carpet still requires independent evidence, so inspect your first runs rather than assuming the feature list predicts pickup.

Choose the Tapo RV50 Pro Omni when…

Automatic high-pile pad lifting and removal are more important to you than relying on a small mop lift. Confirm that the regional version includes the same dock and pad-handling functions described by TP-Link, then test dark or patterned rugs because optical detection can vary with surface appearance.

Choose the DreameBot L10s Pro Ultra when…

You value a floating rubber brush and want explicit cleaning modes, while your rugs are low enough to comply with Dreame’s guidance. The 10.5 mm lift does not override the company’s warning about medium- and high-pile carpets over 3 mm in its specified intelligent mode; use vacuum-only cleaning or exclusion zones for taller rugs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider the Roborock QV 35S when…

Your priority is hard-floor debris pickup and your rugs are limited, low-pile or easy to clean separately. Tom’s Guide’s figures show strong hardwood collection but much weaker results on high-pile debris, especially hair and flax seeds. That pattern is a reason to compare alternatives if thick rugs carry most of your household’s dirt.

Consider the Roborock Saros 20 when…

Low furniture clearance is a major constraint and you want a premium specification set. The published 7.98 cm height may fit spaces taller robots cannot, and TechRadar reported good results on the tested hard and mid-pile surfaces. Treat the 35,000 Pa maximum as a specification rather than a performance ranking, and expect to handle sticky spots manually when necessary.

Common failure modes and fixes

The robot leaves hair on a rug

  • Confirm that carpet boost is enabled in the active mode.
  • Inspect the main brush for wrapped hair and clean the brush bearings.
  • Run a second vacuum-only pass at the higher carpet setting.
  • If the rug is high-pile, compare the result with independent tests on similar pile instead of increasing suction indefinitely.

The mop wets or drags across a rug

  • Stop the cycle and remove the wet pads if the model permits.
  • Check whether the rug exceeds the documented lift or pile limit.
  • Create a no-mop zone or schedule a separate vacuum run.
  • For a dock that removes pads, verify that the robot actually returned to the dock and completed pad removal before entering the rug room.

The robot cannot get under furniture

  • Measure the clearance at the lowest point, not the visible front edge.
  • Check the robot’s full height with its sensor assembly raised.
  • Move cables, storage bins or furniture feet that reduce the usable opening.
  • If clearance remains too low, mark the area as inaccessible and plan an occasional manual pass.

The robot misses a room or gets stranded at a threshold

  • Clean navigation sensors and remove reflective objects that can confuse mapping.
  • Check the transition height against the model’s stated climbing capability.
  • Remap with doors open and rugs in their normal position.
  • Secure curled rug edges and tassels; loose fringes can trigger brush or wheel problems.

The dock becomes a maintenance burden

  • Empty or replace dust bags before they seal or restrict airflow.
  • Rinse filters and wash the dock tray on the schedule in the manual.
  • Keep clean and dirty water tanks separated and dry unused areas to limit odor.
  • Replace worn brushes and mop pads rather than compensating with more suction.

Questions to answer before checkout

  • What is the tallest rug, and does the manual explicitly support that pile?
  • Will the robot vacuum that rug during a mop cycle, avoid it, lift the pad or remove the pad at the dock?
  • Can you run a vacuum-only schedule for all rugs?
  • How much clearance is under your lowest furniture, and is the dock practical in the same room?
  • Do independent tests cover your debris type—especially long hair, cereal-sized crumbs or fine seeds—on your floor type?
  • Are replacement bags, filters, brushes and pads available in your region?
  • Is the current price justified by the maintenance time you will save, or would a simpler charging dock fit your routine better?

For most homes with hardwood and low-pile rugs, start with automatic carpet detection, a documented suction boost and dependable no-mop controls. For thick rugs, make pile-height limits and independent carpet tests the deciding factors; a robot that excels on hardwood can still be the wrong tool for a high-pile room.
