The best Risk of Rain 2 settings are the ones that keep the game responsive on your PC without making enemies, effects, or text harder for you to distinguish. There is no source-backed universal preset or guaranteed FPS gain for a particular option, so start at your current resolution and change one setting at a time while checking performance and clarity in comparable scenes. The settings inventory below is for PC; console menus and behavior may differ.
What settings can you change on PC?
PCGamingWiki lists controls for field of view, display mode, anti-aliasing, VSync, and an FPS limit. Its listed anti-aliasing choices are Off, FXAA, and SMAA; the listed frame-rate limits are 30, 60, 120, and Unlimited. See the PCGamingWiki technical reference for the PC options.
These controls give you ways to adjust the presentation, but the available sources do not establish which individual option produces the largest performance gain or which combination is clearest. Treat the choices as adjustments to test on your own hardware, not as a proven winning preset.
How to make Risk of Rain 2 run smoother
- Keep your current resolution and display mode as a baseline. Lowering resolution can make the image and text less clear, so do not do it automatically if readability is already a problem.
- Choose a repeatable scene to check. Compare similar gameplay situations rather than judging a change in a quiet area against a later, busier one. This is a practical troubleshooting method, not a published benchmark.
- Change one visual option at a time. Reduce or disable an option, then see whether performance improves enough to matter and whether the image remains readable. If the change does not help your experience, restore it before testing another setting.
- Set an FPS limit your PC can sustain consistently. The listed choices are 30, 60, 120, and Unlimited. Selecting Unlimited is not inherently better; choose based on how steadily your system runs and how responsive the game feels to you.
- Test VSync against your display behavior. PCGamingWiki lists VSync as toggleable and off by default. Try changing it if you are assessing how the image behaves on your display, then keep the setting that feels better. The available sources do not show that enabling it guarantees a performance improvement.
Steam publishes Windows minimum and recommended system requirements, but those specifications do not guarantee a particular frame rate at a given resolution or settings mix, especially in a demanding late-game run. Check the Steam listing for the requirements; use them as a compatibility reference rather than an FPS prediction.

Settings for visibility and readability
Anti-aliasing
Compare Off, FXAA, and SMAA on your own display. Anti-aliasing changes the image presentation, but the available sources do not test which choice is clearest or fastest across systems. Inspect edges and nearby visual details in a scene you recognize, and keep the option that is easiest for you to read without an unacceptable performance trade-off.
Field of view
Field of view is adjustable, but no universally optimal value is established. Treat it as a visibility and preference choice: adjust it until the amount of the scene you can see feels useful without making important details difficult for you to pick out.

Resolution and display mode
Begin with the resolution and display mode you already use. If you are troubleshooting performance, change visual options incrementally before lowering resolution by default; a smaller image can undermine the clarity you are trying to preserve. The sources list display mode as a PC option but do not identify one mode as best for performance or readability.

The version 1.3.9 update, dated June 3, 2025, said it focused on memory optimization across platforms and described expected performance improvements, especially for low-end PCs and consoles. Those notes express the publisher’s intent; they do not provide a quantified FPS result or a guarantee for an individual system. The update also said anti-aliasing would function correctly rather than being forced on, and that SSAO, Sobel Lighting, and Gamma Boost should function correctly. This matters when interpreting older advice about those settings. Read the version 1.3.9 update notes.

The cited update applies across platforms, but the PC settings reference does not establish that console menus or setting behavior are identical. The available information also does not establish results for game builds newer than those June 2025 notes, so check the options visible in your installed version.

Make a note of your original setting before each adjustment so you can restore it if the image or performance gets worse. The goal is a configuration that meets your own performance target and remains readable, not the lowest possible graphics settings or the highest possible frame-rate limit.
