Best overall alternative: the AYN Thor Lite is the most balanced choice for Nintendo 3DS emulation, with an A 3DS performance grade, a 120Hz AMOLED upper display, and a $259 list price. Choose the Anbernic RG DS at about $99.99 for inexpensive Nintendo DS play, or the AYANEO Pocket DS from $579 when the largest lower touch screen matters more than weight and cost. The Retroid Pocket Duo Lite is a cheaper option for lighter 3DS workloads, while the single-screen Retroid Pocket 6 only makes sense if broad Android gaming is more important than authentic dual-screen ergonomics.

All prices, stock, shipping, firmware and emulator compatibility can change. The figures below are the cited 2026 listings and comparisons, so verify your region and seller immediately before buying.

Quick recommendations

  • Best 3DS-focused replacement: AYN Thor Lite. Its cited A 3DS grade and balanced $259 price make it the safest pick for demanding dual-screen emulation.
  • Best budget DS handheld: Anbernic RG DS. Two 4-inch IPS panels and a 321 g chassis are appealing at $99.99, but its cited D 3DS grade makes it a poor choice if 3DS is your main system.
  • Best large-screen experience: AYANEO Pocket DS. The 5-inch, 4:3 lower panel gives the largest naturally shaped touch image, but the device weighs 540 g and starts at $579.
  • Best lower-cost compromise: Retroid Pocket Duo Lite. Its $149 launch price, 5.5-inch/4.5-inch IPS screens and Qualcomm QCS6125 chip suit lighter 3DS games, although the available evidence is limited to launch demonstrations.
  • Best if two physical screens are optional: Retroid Pocket 6. It is a single-screen Android handheld and therefore cannot reproduce DS or 3DS two-screen controls, but it is the fallback for a broader Android library.

What makes a good Retroid Pocket Duo alternative?

Two physical displays versus a software layout

DS and 3DS games divide play between an action screen and a touch-oriented lower screen. A true clamshell or two-panel handheld lets you look at both at once and keeps touch controls in their intended position. On a single-screen device, an emulator must stack, swap or resize the screens. That arrangement can work, but maps, inventories and touch-heavy interfaces become less immediate.

The hardware trade-off is substantial: dedicated displays add hinge and panel complexity, increase power draw and make the handheld heavier. A single-screen model is usually simpler to carry and can devote more of its budget to one large panel or a faster platform. Decide whether simultaneous visibility is central to the games you play before paying for the extra hardware.

3DS headroom matters more than a screen count

DS emulation is generally less demanding than 3DS emulation. The cited comparison explicitly separates the Thor Lite’s A grade from the RG DS’s D grade, and the RG DS report of Mario Kart 7 at roughly half speed illustrates why two screens alone do not make a 3DS replacement. For 3DS, look for sustained emulator performance rather than a manufacturer’s screen specification.

Higher-priced Thor models reportedly add headroom for PlayStation 2, GameCube and Switch, while the Thor Lite is described as identical to those models for DS and 3DS. That makes the Lite the value point if your priority stops at Nintendo’s handheld libraries. The available material does not provide equivalent PS2, GameCube or Switch results for the other alternatives, so do not treat their prices as a direct performance ranking.

Lower-screen shape changes the usable picture

Physical diagonal size can be misleading. The Thor Lite’s 3.92-inch lower panel is unusually wide; when a 3DS image is shown at its correct aspect ratio, the usable picture is 3.69 inches. A 3DS XL’s corresponding image is cited as 4.18 inches, so the Thor’s lower image is smaller despite its respectable panel measurement.

The Pocket DS takes the opposite approach with a 5-inch, 4:3 lower screen. That is the largest aspect-correct touch image among these alternatives and the most natural geometry for DS and 3DS content. Its upper screen is a 7-inch 1080p OLED, but the lower panel is a 1024×768 LCD, so the two screens do not use the same display technology.

AYN Thor Lite: the balanced 3DS pick

Choose the Thor Lite when reliable 3DS emulation is your first requirement and your budget is around $259. RetroMemory’s 2026 comparison assigns it an A 3DS grade and reports that the Lite is identical to more expensive Thor versions for DS and 3DS. The premium models mainly buy additional headroom for systems such as PS2, GameCube and Switch rather than a better Nintendo dual-screen experience.

Specifications that affect play

  • 6-inch, 120Hz AMOLED upper display.
  • 3.92-inch lower display.
  • 380 g listed weight.
  • $259 list price in the cited 2026 comparison.
  • 3.69-inch aspect-correct 3DS image on the lower panel, smaller than the cited 4.18-inch 3DS XL image.

The 120Hz upper panel can make scrolling and menus look fluid, but refresh rate does not by itself prove emulator speed. The important evidence is the A 3DS grade and the stated parity with higher Thor tiers for DS and 3DS.

Who should buy it

It is the strongest recommendation for someone replacing a 3DS-style experience with Android hardware while retaining physical two-screen ergonomics. It also suits buyers who want some system headroom but do not need the more expensive tiers. The compromise is the lower screen’s wide shape: games that rely heavily on the touch display do not get as large a 3DS image as they would on a 3DS XL or Pocket DS.

Anbernic RG DS: inexpensive DS, weak 3DS case

The RG DS is compelling only when Nintendo DS is the main target. Its cited $99.99 list price, two 4-inch IPS panels and 321 g weight make it the least expensive and lightest direct alternative in the comparison. Those advantages do not carry over to demanding 3DS software.

What the performance evidence says

RetroMemory’s 2026 comparison gives the RG DS a D 3DS grade. A buyer observation cited there reported Mario Kart 7 running at around half speed. That is not a controlled benchmark, but it is enough to reject the RG DS as a Thor-equivalent 3DS replacement. Treat it as a DS-first purchase, not as a cheap way to obtain dependable 3DS emulation.

When its limitations are acceptable

Choose it for DS libraries that do not require 3DS-level performance, for a lighter travel device, or when the lowest upfront cost matters most. If your shortlist includes 3DS games such as Mario Kart 7, move to the Thor Lite or consider keeping an original 3DS instead.

AYANEO Pocket DS: the biggest lower touch screen

The Pocket DS is the premium choice for readers who care most about the lower display. It combines a 7-inch 1080p OLED upper screen with a 5-inch 1024×768 lower LCD. Because the lower panel is 4:3, it produces the largest naturally proportioned touch image in this group.

The cost of the larger layout

  • Weight: 540 g, substantially heavier than the 321 g RG DS and 380 g Thor Lite.
  • Price: cited starting store price of $579, before any regional shipping, tax or later changes.
  • Panel mismatch: OLED is used above and LCD below, so contrast and response characteristics differ between screens.
  • Performance evidence: the cited comparison does not provide a letter grade equivalent to the Thor’s A or the RG DS’s D.

That combination makes the Pocket DS a specialist purchase. It is attractive if touch targets, maps and inventory screens need to be comfortably large, and if a heavy device is acceptable. It is difficult to justify solely as a performance upgrade without comparable published 3DS testing.

Retroid Pocket Duo Lite: a lower-cost, lighter-duty option

GamesRadar+ reported a $149 price for the Duo Lite, with 5.5-inch and 4.5-inch IPS displays and a Qualcomm QCS6125 chipset. A launch demonstration showed Mario Kart 7 at 2× resolution. That is useful evidence that lighter 3DS workloads are possible, but it is not a full compatibility guarantee across the 3DS library.

Reasons to choose it

  • It costs considerably less than the Thor Lite and Pocket DS at the cited prices.
  • The two IPS panels preserve the basic dual-screen layout.
  • The QCS6125 platform and demonstrated 2× Mario Kart 7 output target more than DS-only play.

Reasons to be cautious

The launch report describes fewer premium controls than the standard Duo, and it does not establish a broad, repeatable 3DS compatibility rate. If you are buying for one or two lighter games, the price may be attractive. If you expect demanding 3DS software to run consistently, the Thor Lite has stronger cited evidence.

Retroid Pocket 6: choose a single screen deliberately

The Retroid Pocket 6 belongs on this list only as a fallback. iTechGuides identifies it for buyers who value a broad Android gaming library more than two physical displays. It cannot reproduce the DS or 3DS layout in hardware; an emulator must show both screens in a software arrangement on one panel.

  • On-the-Go Convenience: With an integrated handle and lightweight design (2.14 lbs), our lap desk is portable for travel or moving around the house, offering flexibility in any space.

That compromise can be worthwhile for Android games and systems that do not use a second screen. It is the wrong choice if your reason for leaving a Retroid Pocket Duo is specifically to improve touch access, simultaneous screen visibility or clamshell ergonomics.

Should you keep an original Nintendo 3DS?

Keep a working 3DS when authentic controls, cartridge access and established software support matter more than Android flexibility. None of the alternatives listed here has a cartridge slot. They run game files supplied by the owner, so moving to one requires managing legally obtained dumps or other permitted files rather than inserting your existing cartridges.

A new handheld can offer a larger screen, modern Android features and access to other emulators, but it also introduces firmware updates, emulator configuration and uncertain long-term support. If your original system already plays the games you own reliably, the cost of an alternative is easiest to justify when you also want Android applications or other retro systems.

Decision guide by budget and priority

Your priority Pick Why Main compromise
Dependable 3DS around $259 AYN Thor Lite Cited A 3DS grade and DS/3DS parity with higher Thor models Lower 3DS image is 3.69 inches despite a 3.92-inch panel
Lowest price for DS Anbernic RG DS $99.99 cited price, dual 4-inch IPS panels and 321 g weight Cited D 3DS grade and half-speed Mario Kart 7 observation
Largest touch display AYANEO Pocket DS 5-inch 4:3 lower panel and 7-inch OLED upper display 540 g weight and $579 starting price
Cheaper entry to lighter 3DS Retroid Pocket Duo Lite $149 reported price and 2× Mario Kart 7 launch demonstration Evidence is a demonstration, not a complete compatibility record
General Android gaming Retroid Pocket 6 Single-screen design favors a broad Android library No physical second screen or authentic DS/3DS layout

Buying checklist before you order

  1. Choose the target library first. If DS is enough, the RG DS can meet the brief. If 3DS is central, prioritize the Thor Lite’s stronger cited evidence.
  2. Measure the lower image, not just the panel diagonal. The Thor’s aspect-correct image is 3.69 inches; the Pocket DS’s 5-inch 4:3 panel is materially larger.
  3. Set a carry-weight limit. The 321 g RG DS and 380 g Thor Lite are easier to carry than the 540 g Pocket DS.
  4. Budget for the complete purchase. Prices cited here may exclude shipping, tax, storage upgrades and accessories, and retailer stock can change.
  5. Check current firmware and emulator support. Availability and support maturity are volatile, and the cited material does not establish a uniform update policy for every model.
  6. Confirm your file setup. These devices have no cartridge slot; use game files you are legally entitled to use.
  7. Verify the seller and region. The $259, $99.99, $579 and $149 figures are cited list or starting prices, not guaranteed checkout totals in every country.

Bottom line

For most buyers seeking a genuine two-screen 3DS replacement, buy the AYN Thor Lite: it combines the strongest cited 3DS evidence with a moderate price and weight. Choose the Anbernic RG DS only for a DS-first library and a strict budget. Pay for the AYANEO Pocket DS when its 5-inch 4:3 touch screen justifies 540 g and a $579 starting price. The Retroid Pocket Duo Lite is an economical experiment for lighter 3DS games, while the Retroid Pocket 6 is a different product category for single-screen Android gaming.
