Best overall: Anbernic RG35XX H. It is a compact Linux handheld with two TF/microSD slots, support for cards up to 512 GB, and a documented workflow for adding game files you supply yourself. Its manufacturer lists more than 30 emulator types, but those are format and platform claims—not a guarantee that every title runs well.
The important distinction is legal as well as technical: a handheld can load a file without making that copy lawful. Use game files you are entitled to use, and check the rules that apply where you live before dumping, copying, converting, or downloading anything.
Which retro handheld is the best fit?
The Anbernic RG35XX H is the clearest match for a buyer who wants a small horizontal handheld, removable storage, and a straightforward way to add a personal library. Anbernic documents the device as a 64-bit Linux system with two TF card slots and expandable storage up to 512 GB. That gives you a practical card-based workflow: keep the operating system and library on removable media, maintain backups on a computer, and replace or upgrade a card without replacing the handheld.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11The recommendation is deliberately narrower than “the most powerful retro handheld.” The RG35XX H uses an H700 quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 processor at 1.5 GHz, dual-core G31 MP2 graphics, and 1 GB of RAM. Its 3.5-inch IPS screen has a 640×480 resolution and a squarer, 4:3-style shape that suits many 8-bit, 16-bit, and early 3D systems. It is a compact retro machine, not a modern high-end gaming PC.

Anbernic’s product listing includes a 64 GB TF card and says the RG35XX H supports ported games and more than 30 emulator types. The same listing says users can download games in relevant formats. Treat those statements as manufacturer specifications and capability claims. They do not independently test every game, establish a legal source for files, or prove that a particular title will be playable at full speed.
RG35XX H specifications that matter for your own library
| Feature | Anbernic RG35XX H | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Linux 64-bit, according to Anbernic | A focused, console-like environment with a removable-card workflow rather than a general-purpose desktop. |
| Processor | H700 quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 at 1.5 GHz | Provides the hardware context for the device’s intended retro range; clock speed alone does not predict compatibility. |
| Graphics | Dual-core G31 MP2 | Relevant to emulation and ports, but no independent title-by-title performance testing is established here. |
| Memory | 1 GB RAM | Modest memory appropriate to the compact retro focus; it is not a specification for modern PC-class games. |
| Display | 3.5-inch IPS, 640×480 | The 4:3-style resolution fits many classic systems without requiring widescreen stretching. |
| Card slots | Two TF/microSD slots | Allows removable storage and gives firmware or library layouts more flexibility, subject to the software installed on your exact unit. |
| Storage expansion | Up to 512 GB, according to Anbernic | Leaves room for a larger personal collection, artwork, saves, and ports; verify current documentation before buying a card. |
| Listed included storage | 64 GB TF card | Check the retailer’s exact package and card contents. The specification does not establish that every sales bundle has identical files. |
What systems can the RG35XX H run?
Anbernic lists support for ported games and more than 30 emulators. Examples on its product page include the following systems and formats:
| Platform or format named by Anbernic | How to interpret the claim |
|---|---|
| PlayStation Portable (PSP) | Listed by the manufacturer; actual results can vary significantly by game and settings. |
| PlayStation (PS1) | Listed as a supported emulator category; individual games may differ in speed, audio, or controller behavior. |
| Dreamcast | Listed by the manufacturer; do not treat the category as a promise of flawless performance for every title. |
| Nintendo DS | Listed, although a single-screen 640×480 handheld cannot reproduce every dual-screen interaction as naturally as original hardware. |
| Arcade | Listed as a category; arcade compatibility often depends on the exact game version and required system files. |
| Game Boy Advance (GBA) | Listed and well matched to the handheld’s compact screen and controls. |
| Game Boy Color and Game Boy | Listed; the 4:3-style display is suitable for these original handheld formats. |
| Super Nintendo/Super Famicom (SNES/SFC) | Listed as a format family; regional versions and special chips can affect behavior. |
| Nintendo Entertainment System/Famicom (NES/FC) | Listed as a format family. |
| Mega Drive and other formats | Listed by Anbernic among its supported categories; the product page does not provide independent testing for every format or title. |
Use that list to narrow your expectations, not to skip testing. A platform label tells you that the firmware includes an emulator or launcher category. It does not tell you whether a demanding game, a special-chip cartridge, an arcade revision, or a title requiring unusual controls will work correctly.

Android alternative: Anbernic RG 476H
The Anbernic RG 476H is the secondary option for readers who prefer an Android-based handheld. Anbernic lists a Unisoc T820 processor, Android, Android games, and more than 30 kinds of simulator. Its product description also refers to downloading games in relevant formats.
That makes the RG 476H worth considering when Android access or a potentially more capable class of hardware matters more than a minimal Linux interface. The available product evidence does not establish game-by-game performance, value for money, current pricing, battery life, or the best target system for it. Choose it for the operating-system approach you want, then verify current firmware and compatibility information for the exact model before purchase.

What “bring your own games” actually means
These handhelds are storage and playback devices. You provide files, place them on a card or internal storage as the firmware expects, and launch them through an emulator or port. The device’s ability to read a file does not decide whether you had the right to obtain or use that copy.

Nintendo Support’s Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ explains that “video game emulators enable games to be played on another console, PC, or other handheld device.” The same FAQ says that games offered through peer-to-peer networks or links to files hosted on third-party platforms are unauthorized copies. That is Nintendo’s stated position, not a complete statement of copyright law in every country.
There is no universal rule in the available evidence saying that backing up a cartridge, converting a file, or downloading a particular format is automatically lawful everywhere. Rules can depend on your country, the work, how the copy was made, and how it is used. Use games and system files you are legally entitled to use, avoid unauthorized file-sharing sources, and obtain local legal advice if your situation is unclear.
What you need before setting up an RG35XX H
- The exact handheld model. Confirm that the label says RG35XX H rather than a visually similar model. Firmware, card layout, and compatibility are model-specific.
- A removable microSD/TF card. The RG35XX H has two TF slots and documented expansion up to 512 GB. Check the current manual or product documentation for supported capacities and which slot is intended for the system or games.
- A computer and card reader. A USB microSD card reader can simplify copying your own files. Verify that the reader matches your computer’s connector and operating system.
- Your legally obtained game files and any required system files. Keep your original media and personal backups secure. Do not assume that a file is lawful merely because the handheld can open it.
- A backup location. Save a copy of the card’s contents before changing folders, replacing firmware, or adding a large library.
- Current model-specific firmware instructions. Menu names, folder conventions, supported card sizes, and save behavior depend on the firmware installed on your unit.
How to add your own files
The broad process is simple, but the exact folder names and menu commands vary by firmware. Do not force a folder layout from another handheld onto the RG35XX H.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Identify the model and firmware. Read the label and open the system-information screen to record the model and firmware version. Download instructions only for that exact combination.
- Back up the supplied card. With the handheld powered off, remove the TF card and copy its visible contents to a computer. Preserve hidden files if your operating system offers that option. This gives you a recovery point if a card becomes corrupted.
- Prepare the replacement or library card. Use the file system and capacity specified by the current RG35XX H documentation. If you use the second slot, confirm from the firmware instructions whether it is assigned to games, expansion, or another purpose.
- Copy only files you are entitled to use. Transfer the relevant game files from your own archival or licensed sources. Keep each platform’s files in the directories expected by the installed launcher.
- Add required BIOS or system files only where permitted and supported. Some emulators need system files; the correct names and locations are firmware-specific. Do not download them from an unverified file-sharing source simply because a game fails to start.
- Safely eject the card. Close file-transfer windows, use your computer’s eject command, and then remove the card. Interrupting a write can damage the file system.
- Boot the handheld and refresh its library. Some firmware scans cards automatically; others require a refresh or a rescan option. Use the menu supplied with your firmware rather than assuming a universal path.
- Test a small sample first. Start with one or two titles from each target system. Check loading, controls, audio, video scaling, and save behavior before copying your entire collection.
- Make a second backup after testing. Keep a copy of the working card image or folder structure so a failed update or damaged card does not erase your setup.
Firmware and save behavior can change the experience
Compatibility is not just a hardware question. The emulator build, launcher, card format, and firmware version all affect what appears in the menu and how a game behaves. Follow documentation for the exact model; instructions for another Anbernic device or another Linux handheld may use different paths and assumptions.
Miyoo Custom Firmware documentation illustrates why this caution matters. Its supported-device list marks some consoles as “Not confirmed,” meaning they are still under review and may not appear on the final compatibility list. That is project-specific guidance, not a statement that every handheld has the same status system.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The same Miyoo documentation warns that, in the described setup, data is written automatically every five seconds. Turning the device off immediately after saving can therefore lose a just-created save. Even when your RG35XX H uses different software, the safe habit is the same: wait after saving, exit to the launcher when possible, and power down cleanly instead of holding the power button during disk activity.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.

Troubleshooting common problems
The game does not appear in the menu
- Confirm that the file is in the directory assigned to that platform by your firmware.
- Check the file extension and format against the emulator’s supported formats.
- Run the firmware’s library refresh or rescan function.
- Verify that the card is mounted and readable; a loose card or damaged file system can hide an entire collection.
- Test one known-good file before changing several settings at once.
The game opens to a black screen or crashes
- The title may be outside the emulator’s practical compatibility range even though the platform is listed.
- The file may be incomplete, corrupted, or in a format the emulator does not support.
- A required BIOS or system file may be missing or placed in the wrong location.
- Restore the original firmware settings before experimenting with advanced options, and keep a backup so you can recover.
Controls or screens feel wrong
- Check the emulator’s per-game control mapping and display-scaling options.
- Remember that a 640×480 single screen cannot reproduce every dual-screen Nintendo DS interaction as naturally as original hardware.
- Use the handheld’s native aspect ratio where possible; stretching a 4:3 image can distort sprites and text.
A save disappears
- Wait several seconds after saving before exiting or powering down.
- Use the firmware’s normal quit or suspend command so pending writes can finish.
- If multiple cards are used, confirm that the game and save directories are on the card the firmware actually mounts.
- Restore from your backup rather than repeatedly writing to a card that may be failing.
Choosing between the two models
Choose the RG35XX H when
- You want the most clearly documented compact Linux option in this comparison.
- Your priority is a 3.5-inch 640×480 display and a horizontal retro-handheld layout.
- You value two TF slots and documented expansion up to 512 GB.
- Your library focuses on the systems Anbernic lists, and you are prepared to test individual games rather than rely on a platform label.
- You prefer a dedicated launcher instead of Android app management.
Consider the RG 476H when
- You specifically want Android and its broader app-oriented environment.
- You are willing to verify current firmware, storage details, pricing, and title performance yourself.
- You need a device choice that is not limited to the compact Linux workflow of the RG35XX H.
Do not choose by emulator count alone
“More than 30” categories sounds precise, but it does not measure frame rate, input latency, shader quality, save reliability, or compatibility with every game. A smaller list of well-tested systems can be more useful than a long menu of emulators that requires per-title tweaking. Match the device to the systems you actually own, then test representative titles before expanding the collection.
Buying and setup checklist
- Confirm the exact model name and operating system.
- Check whether the seller’s package includes a card, its stated capacity, and any preloaded files; do not assume every bundle is identical.
- Verify the current supported card capacity and the role of each TF slot in the latest documentation.
- Budget for a reliable microSD card and, if needed, a USB microSD card reader.
- Plan a computer backup before modifying the supplied card.
- Confirm that your own files are legally usable where you live.
- Read model-specific firmware notes before updating or changing folder names.
- Test saves and shutdown behavior with a small library before copying everything.
- Check current price, availability, return terms, and package contents at the time you buy; those details are not established by the hardware specifications above.
Bottom line
The Anbernic RG35XX H is the strongest documented starting point for a compact handheld that accepts a user-supplied retro library. Its dual TF slots, Linux software, 640×480 IPS display, and listed support for more than 30 emulator types make the workflow understandable without pretending that every game is guaranteed to work. The RG 476H is a reasonable Android alternative, but the available evidence is not detailed enough to rank its real-world compatibility or value. In either case, the responsible workflow is the same: use files you are entitled to use, follow firmware instructions for the exact model, back up your cards, and test the titles you care about.
