Choose Resident Evil 3 for Jill, Resident Evil 2 for Claire, and Resident Evil 6 if Ada must have a substantial playable campaign. The original Resident Evil is also an excellent Jill choice, while Resident Evil: Revelations 2 continues Claire’s story. Resident Evil 4 includes important Ada material, especially Separate Ways, but its main campaign is Leon’s—not Ada’s.

This distinction matters: a character can appear in a game, be briefly playable, or lead a full campaign. The recommendations below rank games by the amount and importance of playtime each character receives, then explain tone, story context and practical access questions.

Quick answer: the best match for each character

Favorite character Best first game Why it fits Good follow-up
Jill Valentine Resident Evil 3 Jill is the central playable hero in the Raccoon City crisis, including the modern remake’s return to her story. Resident Evil (original or remake), then Resident Evil: Revelations
Claire Redfield Resident Evil 2 It offers a complete Claire campaign separate from Leon’s, letting you experience the Raccoon City outbreak from her perspective. Resident Evil: Revelations 2; Code: Veronica for her continuing story
Ada Wong Resident Evil 6 Ada is one of the game’s four campaign protagonists and receives a dedicated campaign. Resident Evil 4 with Separate Ways, remembering that the base game is principally Leon-led

If you want one game that serves more than one preference, Resident Evil 2 is the most useful overlap: Claire has a full campaign and Ada has meaningful story content. Their roles are not equal, however. Choose it for Claire first, and treat Ada as an important secondary thread rather than the lead.

How to judge a character-focused Resident Evil game

Resident Evil games use several different character roles. Understanding them prevents a common disappointment: buying a game because a favorite character appears on the cover, then discovering that most of the actual playtime belongs to someone else.

#1 Best Overall
Resident Evil 2 - PlayStation 5
  • TERRIFYING ZOMBIES WAITING AROUND EVERY CORNER -- Driven by insatiable hunger, these creatures act on instinct, gnashing their teeth, ripping at flesh, and devouring their victims. The new immersive camera lets you feel their fangs as they sink into your flesh.
  • RACCOON CITY, REBUILT IN INTRICATE DETAIL -- The characters, environments, and story have all been rebuilt from the ground up to create a terrifying world that feels both nostalgic and new.
  • NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.

Lead protagonist

A lead protagonist carries the main narrative and most of the playable sections. Resident Evil 3 is the clearest Jill example, while Claire’s route in Resident Evil 2 is the clearest Claire example.

Dedicated campaign

A dedicated campaign gives the character a substantial, separately structured route. Ada’s campaign in Resident Evil 6 meets this standard. It is a stronger Ada recommendation than a title where she appears only in selected chapters.

Selectable protagonist

In the original Resident Evil and its remake, Jill is one of the selectable leads alongside Chris. The game therefore supports Jill-focused play from the beginning, even though it is not exclusively her story.

Supporting or interwoven appearance

A character may be playable for a short scenario, appear in cutscenes, or influence the plot without leading the base game. Ada’s role in Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4 belongs in this category unless you add the relevant Ada-focused content. These appearances can be valuable for story fans but should not be described as equivalent to a full campaign.

Best Resident Evil games if you prefer Jill Valentine

1. Resident Evil 3 — the direct Jill recommendation

Start here if Jill is the reason you are choosing a game. The story places her in the Raccoon City crisis, and the remake explicitly returns to Jill’s experience of that disaster. She is not an optional cameo or a late-game unlock: the game is built around her survival, decisions and encounters.

Resident Evil 3 is therefore the simplest answer to “Which Resident Evil should I play for Jill?” It also gives you the clearest single-character focus among the Jill options listed here. The game’s identity is tied to the city crisis and Jill’s attempt to survive it, making it a natural starting point even if you have not played earlier entries.

Choose it when you want Jill’s story first and are comfortable with a game that places more emphasis on immediate set pieces and forward momentum than the slower, puzzle-heavy structure of the earliest title.

2. Resident Evil — original or remake

The first Resident Evil is the other essential Jill choice because Jill is one of two selectable leads, alongside Chris. Selecting Jill changes the perspective through which you explore the mansion, manage resources and uncover the incident’s story.

This is the better pick when you want Jill at the foundation of the series rather than in the middle of its later Raccoon City storyline. It also represents the series’ strongest traditional survival-horror framework among these recommendations: constrained supplies, exploration, locked-room progression and deliberate backtracking are central to the experience.

Resident Evil 2 Remake PS4
  • Based on the release of 1998 but completely rebuilt for a deeper narrative experience
  • new over the shoulder camera mode and modernized control scheme
  • a more modern take on the survival horror experience
  • RE engine, Resident Evil 2 delivers breathtakingly photorealistic visuals in 4K
  • zombies are brought to life with a horrifyingly realistic wet gore Effect.zombies react in real time taking instant visible damage, making every bullet count.engage in frenzied combat with enemies, explore dark menacing corridors & solve puzzles.a terrifying constant fight for survival.enjoy separately playable campaigns for both Leon and Claire

“Original or remake” is a meaningful edition decision, not a claim that every release is identical. Confirm which version is available on your platform and in your region before buying. The character recommendation applies to both versions because Jill remains a selectable lead.

3. Resident Evil: Revelations — Jill and Chris in a later adventure

Resident Evil: Revelations gives Jill and Chris a later adventure and is a useful next step after either Resident Evil 3 or the first Resident Evil. It is particularly suitable if you want Jill in a story that revisits survival-horror tension after the more action-oriented direction associated with some later entries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The game is not a Jill-only campaign, so it should rank behind Resident Evil 3 for a reader seeking maximum Jill focus. Its value is the combination of Jill’s continued role, Chris’s presence and a tone characterized as moving back toward horror.

Jill decision guide

  • Want the most direct Jill-led story? Pick Resident Evil 3.
  • Want Jill at the series’ survival-horror starting point? Pick Resident Evil and select her instead of Chris.
  • Want a later Jill-and-Chris adventure with a stronger horror direction? Pick Resident Evil: Revelations.

Best Resident Evil games if you prefer Claire Redfield

1. Resident Evil 2 — the clearest Claire match

Resident Evil 2 is the first choice for Claire fans because it provides separate Leon and Claire campaigns. You can choose Claire’s perspective from the outset and follow her route through the Raccoon City outbreak rather than treating her as a supporting character in Leon’s story.

That structure makes Resident Evil 2 unusually well suited to character-focused play. Claire’s campaign is not merely a short bonus episode: it is one of the game’s primary routes. If you want her motivations, encounters and relationships to shape your playthrough, this is the strongest starting point.

The game also intersects with Ada’s storyline, which makes it an attractive crossover recommendation. Keep the roles separate, though: Claire has a principal campaign, while Ada’s involvement is important but not equivalent to a full base-game route.

2. Resident Evil: Revelations 2 — Claire returns as a protagonist

Resident Evil: Revelations 2 is the natural follow-up when you want more Claire after Resident Evil 2. Claire returns as a protagonist, giving her another substantial role rather than a brief appearance.

Choose it when character continuity matters more than playing entries in release order. It works as a Claire-centered next step because the recommendation is based on her role in the game, not merely on a cameo or reference.

3. Code: Veronica — continue Claire’s story, verify access first

Code: Veronica continues Claire’s story after the Raccoon City events. For a reader interested in her longer arc, that makes it an important title even if it is not always the most convenient first purchase.

Resident Evil 3 - PlayStation 5
  • CLASSIC RESIDENT EVIL GAMEPLAY -- Overcome chilling encounters in a relentless fight for survival that ratchets up the intensity through nail-biting exploration and gripping puzzle-solving.
  • EXPLORE RACCOON CITY FROM A NEW PERSPECTIVE -- Get even closer to the action with an over-the-shoulder camera and updated control scheme, drawing you into every bloodcurdling encounter.
  • SURVIVE TOGETHER IN THE MULTIPLAYER MODE -- Bring up to four friends into the carnage with Resident Evil Resistance, a multiplayer survival horror experience included in the Resident Evil 3 package. Available as a PlayStation 4 title compatible on all PlayStation 5 devices. Includes code necessary for redemption, requires additional download not on disc.
  • NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.

Current platform access can be less convenient than for modern remakes. Availability varies by region, edition and storefront, and the supplied evidence does not establish a current inventory. Check the exact local listing before planning a playthrough; do not assume that a version available in one territory or on one platform is available everywhere.

Claire decision guide

  • Want a full Claire campaign immediately? Start with Resident Evil 2.
  • Want another game with Claire as a protagonist? Continue with Resident Evil: Revelations 2.
  • Want the next chapter in her post-Raccoon City story? Look for Code: Veronica, after confirming local platform access.

Best Resident Evil games if you prefer Ada Wong

1. Resident Evil 6 — the only clear dedicated-campaign recommendation here

Choose Resident Evil 6 when your priority is actually playing as Ada for a substantial portion of the game. The chronology identifies Ada as one of its four campaign protagonists, so her route is a dedicated campaign rather than a short interlude.

This is also the most important tone warning in the entire list. Resident Evil 6 is characterized as more action-oriented than the horror-focused direction associated with Resident Evil: Revelations. If you want Ada’s playable presence above all else, that trade-off is likely acceptable. If you want slower survival horror first and Ada second, consider Resident Evil 4 or Resident Evil 2 for their different balance of story and character roles.

2. Resident Evil 4 — important Ada content in a Leon-led game

Resident Evil 4 is relevant to Ada fans, but it should be described accurately: the principal campaign is Leon’s story. Ada’s presence is significant, yet the base game is not an Ada-led campaign.

The remake was announced as a remake of the 2005 game and released on March 24, 2023 for the platforms named in Capcom’s announcement. That date is a historical release detail, not a guarantee of what is currently sold in your region. When choosing an edition, verify whether the Ada-focused Separate Ways content is included, sold separately or unavailable in the listing you are considering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Resident Evil 2 — Ada appears, but Claire and Leon lead

Resident Evil 2 can appeal to Ada-interested players because she is part of its story, but the game’s principal selectable campaigns are Leon’s and Claire’s. It is therefore a good recommendation for someone who wants Ada’s narrative presence alongside a full Claire or Leon route—not for someone who wants an Ada campaign comparable to Resident Evil 6.

Ada decision guide

  • Want a dedicated Ada campaign? Pick Resident Evil 6.
  • Want Ada in a major story connected to Leon? Pick Resident Evil 4, then verify Separate Ways access.
  • Want Ada’s role alongside a full Claire or Leon campaign? Pick Resident Evil 2.

Resident Evil 2 is the main overlap between these preferences

Resident Evil 2 deserves special treatment because it answers two different reader needs without giving the characters identical roles. Claire has one of the game’s principal campaigns. Ada has important story involvement, but not an equivalent full-length base campaign.

Character Role in Resident Evil 2 What you should expect
Claire Selectable campaign protagonist A complete route designed around Claire’s perspective.
Ada Important supporting and playable story presence Meaningful involvement, but not a full Ada-led base campaign.
Jill Not the principal campaign character Choose Resident Evil 3 or the first Resident Evil for Jill-focused play instead.

This is why “Which game features all three?” is the wrong test. The useful question is how much of the game each character actually leads. For Claire, Resident Evil 2 is a first-choice recommendation. For Ada, it is supplementary; for Jill, it is not the right starting point.

Traditional survival horror

The original Resident Evil emphasizes the survival-horror foundation: exploration, limited resources, environmental puzzles and careful progression. Pick it for Jill if you value atmosphere and methodical play over constant combat momentum.

Horror-leaning later adventure

Resident Evil: Revelations is described in the chronology as moving back toward horror. It suits Jill fans who want a later setting without abandoning tension as the central mood.

Action-oriented campaign structure

Resident Evil 6 is more action-oriented. Its Ada campaign solves the “I want to play as Ada” requirement, but it should not be sold as the closest match for old-school survival horror.

Mixed priorities

If your priorities are split—character story first, tone second—use the character-specific recommendations above. If tone comes first, begin with the Jill route in the original Resident Evil for traditional horror, then move to the character whose campaign best matches your preferred pace.

A practical play order for each fan

Jill-focused order

  1. Play Resident Evil with Jill as your selectable lead.
  2. Move to Resident Evil 3 for her Raccoon City-centered story.
  3. Play Resident Evil: Revelations for a later Jill-and-Chris adventure with a horror-leaning direction.

Claire-focused order

  1. Start with Claire’s campaign in Resident Evil 2.
  2. Continue with Resident Evil: Revelations 2, where Claire returns as a protagonist.
  3. Look for Code: Veronica to continue her story after Raccoon City, checking local access before committing to a particular edition.

Ada-focused order

  1. Begin with Resident Evil 6 if dedicated Ada play is the deciding factor.
  2. Play Resident Evil 4 for Ada’s connection to Leon’s story.
  3. Confirm whether Separate Ways is included or needs a separate purchase in the edition you select.
  4. Use Resident Evil 2 for additional Ada context, understanding that Claire and Leon have the principal campaigns.

Edition and availability checks before you buy

Character recommendations do not guarantee that every edition contains the same add-on content or is sold on the same platforms. Listings also change by country and storefront. Before purchasing, check these details on the exact regional store page or physical listing:

  • Platform: Confirm that the edition runs on your console or PC and whether it is a native release or a backward-compatible version.
  • Region: Physical stock and digital availability can differ between territories.
  • Edition: Remakes, originals, compilations and deluxe releases can have different names and included content.
  • Ada add-on: For Resident Evil 4, verify whether Separate Ways is included, sold as downloadable content or absent from the listing.
  • Code: Veronica: Confirm access before planning a Claire chronology around it, because availability can be less convenient than for modern remakes.

Do not treat the March 24, 2023 release date announced for the Resident Evil 4 remake as a current platform inventory. It identifies the historical launch, while the listing you can buy today depends on region and edition.

What the series’ scale tells you—and what it does not

Capcom stated in a June 3, 2022 press release that the Resident Evil franchise had exceeded 125 million cumulative shipments as of March 31, 2022. That is a historical shipment milestone, not a current sales total and not evidence that one character’s game is better than another’s.

Capcom describes the franchise as survival-horror games in which players use weapons and other items to escape terrifying situations. That broad description covers the series’ changing balance: the original game’s constrained exploration, Revelations’ return toward horror and Resident Evil 6’s stronger action emphasis all fit within the franchise while offering different experiences.

Final recommendations by reader priority

Your priority Pick first Reason
Jill is the non-negotiable favorite Resident Evil 3 It places Jill at the center of the Raccoon City crisis.
Jill plus classic survival horror Resident Evil Jill is a selectable lead in the series’ foundational horror format.
Claire’s complete perspective Resident Evil 2 Claire has a principal campaign separate from Leon’s.
More Claire after Raccoon City Resident Evil: Revelations 2 Claire returns as a protagonist.
Ada must have her own campaign Resident Evil 6 Ada is one of four campaign protagonists.
Ada connected to Leon’s story Resident Evil 4 plus verified Separate Ways access Ada is important, but the base game remains principally Leon-led.

The shortest reliable answer is simple: Jill fans should begin with Resident Evil 3, Claire fans with Resident Evil 2, and Ada fans with Resident Evil 6. Use the original Resident Evil, Revelations, Revelations 2, Code: Veronica and Resident Evil 4 to shape the tone and story path around that first choice.
