Play Resident Evil 4 next. In Capcom’s official chronology, Code: Veronica takes place in December 1998 and Resident Evil 4 follows in autumn 2004, making it the clearest next stop among these games. From there, play Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 to continue through the numbered entries, or fit Resident Evil Revelations between them by story date.
Recommended order after Code: Veronica
The best-supported answer is an order by story chronology, not a ranking of game quality. Capcom’s timeline places the games in this sequence:

| 2 |

| Game | Story date in Capcom’s chronology | How it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Resident Evil Code: Veronica | December 1998 | Your starting point |
| Resident Evil 4 | Autumn 2004 | The clearest immediate chronological follow-up |
| Resident Evil Revelations | 2005 | A side path after Resident Evil 4 and before Resident Evil 5 |
| Resident Evil 5 | March 2009 | The next numbered entry after Resident Evil 4 |
| Resident Evil 6 | 2013 | Continues the numbered sequence |
| Resident Evil 7 biohazard | July 2017 | A later-era option |
The dates are in-universe story dates, not release years. They establish when the incidents take place; they do not establish that one game is easier, scarier, more enjoyable, or more similar in play style to Code: Veronica.
Why Resident Evil 4 is the best next pick
Resident Evil 4 is the straightforward choice if your question is simply, “What should I play after Code: Veronica?” The chronology moves from December 1998 to autumn 2004, and Capcom’s story summary identifies Leon as a U.S. agent sent to Europe to rescue the president’s daughter. That makes it a clearly identifiable next chapter in the series’ timeline without requiring you to jump to a later-era entry first.
#1 Best Overall
- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.
- Reimagined Story – Resident Evil 4 dials up the original release’s key feelings of loneliness and the fear of enemies blinded by zealotry, while providing more nuanced depictions of the character motivations and relationships that defined the 2005 survival horror icon.
Capcom’s official game lineup lists Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition. The existence of a remake is also relevant when choosing a copy: make sure the listing you select is the version and platform you intend to play. The cited lineup confirms the catalog entries, but it does not establish current retail stock, price, or compatibility for your particular device.
How to continue after Resident Evil 4
For the numbered-game path: Resident Evil 5, then Resident Evil 6
If you want to keep moving through the numbered entries, play Resident Evil 5 after Resident Evil 4, followed by Resident Evil 6. Capcom dates the Resident Evil 5 story to March 2009 and Resident Evil 6 to 2013. This keeps the order clear without inserting the side-story entry into the main numbered sequence.

For a chronology detour: Resident Evil Revelations
Resident Evil Revelations takes place in 2005, after Resident Evil 4 and before Resident Evil 5. Choose it at that point if following story dates matters to you and you want to include this additional entry. You can also continue directly to Resident Evil 5 if your priority is the numbered games; the chronology makes Revelations an optional stop in this path, not a replacement for Resident Evil 5.
For a later-era entry: Resident Evil 7 biohazard
Capcom places the Baker House incident in Resident Evil 7 biohazard in July 2017. That makes it a later chronological option after the 1998 events of Code: Veronica and the 2004–2013 entries listed above. Its date alone does not show how closely its characters or mechanics follow Code: Veronica, so choose it for its later timeline placement rather than on an assumed claim of similarity.
Rank #3
- Legendary Visuals - Resident Evil 4 features a breathtaking visual style and effects.

- Hordes of Enemies - Tackle creatures that defy the laws of nature, including horrific new creatures infested by a threat called Las Plagas.
- Advanced AI - Enemies are smarter than ever and will use their cunning abilities to team up and attack the player en masse.
- Mercenaries Mode - A fast-paced test of skill where you can play as fan favorites like Wesker or Hunk on a mission to wipe out hordes of enemies to earn the high score
Choose an order that matches your goal
- Just want the next chronological game? Start with Resident Evil 4.
- Want to follow the numbered entries? Play Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 5, then Resident Evil 6.
- Want to include the intervening side entry? Place Resident Evil Revelations after Resident Evil 4 and before Resident Evil 5.
- Looking for a later timeline point? Resident Evil 7 biohazard takes place in 2017.
What this order can—and cannot—tell you
This guide uses Capcom’s chronology to answer a play-order question. The dates support where these stories fall relative to one another, but they are not evidence for a quality ranking or a gameplay comparison. The official material cited here does not compare difficulty, accessibility, reviews, player satisfaction, or how closely the games play to Code: Veronica. If those are your deciding factors, chronology alone cannot settle the choice.
For the most direct continuation, begin with Resident Evil 4. Treat Revelations as the chronological side path, continue the numbered run with Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6, and save Resident Evil 7 biohazard for the later-era timeline.
